To find what is using your MacBook Pro’s battery, check Activity Monitor > Energy, then compare the pattern in System Settings > Battery. If battery life remains poor after trying reversible settings, check Battery Health and the Mac’s model-specific cycle count before considering service or replacement.
Find apps with high energy use

Open Activity Monitor. You can find it with Spotlight search.

Select the Energy tab and look at Energy Impact. Apple describes this as a relative measure of an app’s current energy consumption; lower is better. The value depends on what the app is doing, so watch it during your usual workload rather than treating one reading as a diagnosis. Apple’s Activity Monitor guide explains the columns.

On a laptop, compare 12 hr Power as well. It averages energy impact over the last 12 hours or since startup, whichever period is shorter. Lower is better.

Look for clues such as Preventing Sleep, Graphics Card, and App Nap. Activity Monitor also shows overall energy information and battery details, including estimated remaining time and a charge-level history.

If an app you recognize stays high when you are not using it, close it or adjust its settings if you do not need it. Do not force quit unfamiliar system processes: a high relative reading alone does not prove an app is faulty or that closing it will fix the drain.
Check when battery use changed
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. Review Last 24 Hours and Last 10 Days to see whether screen-on use or energy use changed around the time you noticed shorter runtime. Apple shows battery level in 15-minute intervals, with shading to indicate charging; the longer view includes daily Energy Usage and Screen On Usage. Apple’s battery settings guide describes these views.

Make reversible changes to extend runtime

Use Low Power Mode: In System Settings > Battery, select Low Power Mode where available. It reduces energy use in exchange for lower peak performance, which can be a sensible trade-off when runtime matters more.

Dim the display: Lower brightness, and enable the option to slightly dim the display on battery if your Mac offers it.

Close what you do not need: Quit unused apps and disconnect peripherals that are not in use.

Review graphics and video options: Depending on model and configuration, Battery settings may include graphics switching or video-streaming options. Automatic graphics switching can help optimize battery lifespan; some MacBook Pro configurations can optimize video streaming on battery by playing HDR content in SDR.

Apple’s guidance describes these controls but does not specify how many extra hours any one change will provide. Results depend on the Mac, workload, settings, and battery condition.
Understand charging features versus runtime settings
Low Power Mode and dimming target energy use while you are working. Optimized Battery Charging, Charge Limit, and battery health management instead aim to reduce long-term battery aging. Depending on the Mac and settings, Optimized Battery Charging may delay charging past 80% when macOS predicts the computer will stay connected to power for an extended period, while Charge Limit can cap charging. A charge below 100% at a particular moment is not, by itself, evidence of a faulty battery. Available controls vary by model and macOS version. Check Battery Health and cycle count
Read Battery Health
In System Settings > Battery, inspect Battery Health and maximum capacity if shown. Normal means the battery is functioning normally. Service Recommended means it holds less charge than when new or may not be functioning normally. Consider service if the reduced capacity affects your experience; Apple lists Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers as service options. Apple’s battery condition guide explains the status.
Find the cycle count

Hold Option while clicking the Apple menu.

Choose System Information, then select Power under Hardware.

Find the cycle count and identify your MacBook Pro’s exact model and year before interpreting it. Maximum cycle counts vary by model; Apple recommends battery replacement for best performance once a battery reaches its maximum cycle count. Apple’s cycle-count guidance explains how to locate the count and check the limit for your model.

When service or replacement makes sense
If Activity Monitor and Battery history point to active energy use, start with the apps and settings above. If Battery Health shows Service Recommended, or the model-specific cycle limit has been reached and runtime is poor, consider service. Battery compatibility depends on the exact MacBook Pro model, so do not choose a replacement part by product family alone.
For Apple silicon Mac laptops, Apple says a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. That is a design statement, not a promise about runtime or a replacement threshold that applies identically to every model. Intel Mac laptops have separate battery health guidance. Apple’s descriptions of energy controls do not quantify typical runtime gains, so use your own usage history to judge whether a change helps.
