Possibly—but buying a used PS5 Pro does not automatically give you a right to return it or a valid Sony warranty. The answer depends on your country, who sold it, the console’s original purchase date and condition, and whether you have the original proof of purchase. A warranty claim for a defect is separate from returning a console to its seller for a refund.
Will Sony repair a used PS5 Pro under warranty?
It may, but do not assume the warranty transfers to you. Sony’s U.S. PS5 limited hardware warranty is for one year from the original purchase date, applies to the original purchaser, and requires valid proof of that purchase to obtain warranty service. Sony’s U.S. buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty. In the UK, Sony says third-party used products may not be covered. The rules and eligibility can differ by country.

Before relying on coverage, ask PlayStation Support in the country where the console was originally sold to check the serial number and receipt. The U.S. warranty describes repair or replacement with a factory-recertified product, at Sony’s option, for a covered defect and subject to its terms. It excludes some cases, including misuse, unauthorized opening or service, and products clearly sold “as is” or with faults. Read Sony’s U.S. warranty terms and U.S. buying guide.

- The original purchase date and a dated retailer receipt or bill of sale.
- The country where the console was first purchased, since warranty terms are regional.
- The console’s serial number and whether it has been opened, damaged, or serviced outside Sony’s authorized process.
Sony warns that service can change console settings or result in data loss, so back up your data before sending it in.

Can you return a used PS5 Pro for a refund?
A warranty is not a general right to return a console for a refund. A return depends on the seller’s policy and the consumer-protection law that applies to your transaction. A private seller, marketplace seller, retailer, and PlayStation Direct can have different terms; check the actual listing, receipt, and applicable local rules.
Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Direct return policy applies to purchases made from PlayStation Direct, not to unrelated sellers. Sony’s UK hardware refund page describes its own hardware purchase policy, including a goodwill return window of 30 days from delivery for eligible items. Neither policy creates a universal return period for used consoles bought elsewhere. See the U.S. PlayStation Direct returns policy and UK PlayStation hardware refund information.
How do the U.S. and UK guidance differ?
| Region | Third-party used products | Certified refurbished information |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Sony’s buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty. | Sony says certified refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty; the cited buying guide does not establish PS5 Pro availability. |
| United Kingdom | Sony says third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered and notes that this does not affect statutory rights under applicable law. | Sony’s certified refurbished console page states a 12-month manufacturer warranty for the consoles covered by that page. It does not establish current PS5 Pro stock or availability, and notes that units may have minor cosmetic imperfections. |
These are examples of Sony’s published guidance, not a determination of your individual rights. Your legal protections depend on the country and circumstances of the sale. Check Sony’s U.S. buying guide, UK buying guide, and UK certified refurbished console information.

What to check before buying a used PS5 Pro
Get the seller’s answers in writing, particularly if the original receipt or a return promise is part of the deal. Sony’s used-product guidance recommends checking seller feedback, asking for a test video, inspecting the console, checking service connectivity, and making sure the previous owner has deactivated it. Use this checklist:
- Receipt and origin: Ask for the original dated retail receipt or invoice, and confirm where and when the console was first bought.
- Return terms: Confirm the return deadline, refund conditions, and who pays return shipping. Ask what happens if the console fails or cannot connect to PlayStation services shortly after purchase.
- Working condition: Request a video showing the console powering on and testing its ports, buttons, disc drive if applicable, and internet or PlayStation service connectivity.
- Physical condition: Inspect for damage and check that the serial number has not been removed.
- Account status: Confirm the previous owner has deactivated the console.
Sony’s buying guide provides its used-product checks; these checks help assess the unit but do not guarantee warranty eligibility or a refund.
Is certified refurbished different from used?
Yes. Sony distinguishes its certified refurbished products from third-party used products and says certified refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty. The UK certified refurbished console page specifies 12 months of manufacturer warranty for the products it covers. That published page does not confirm that a refurbished PS5 Pro is currently available. Verify the exact model, warranty terms, seller, and return policy for any listing; a seller merely describing a console as “refurbished” is not proof that it is Sony-certified.
Quick Recap
What to do if you already own the console
- Find the original receipt and note the purchase date and country of sale.
- Record the console’s serial number and contact PlayStation Support for the relevant country to ask whether it is eligible for service.
- Read the applicable seller return policy separately if you want a refund rather than a repair.
- Back up your data before any service, because Sony warns that service may change settings or result in data loss.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
