A used PS5 Pro can be listed above the price of a new one, but that does not mean used consoles generally sell for more. In the US, Sony’s suggested price was reported at $899.99 after a March 2026 increase; October reports put some GameStop pre-owned units at about $1,399.99. Those are different price references, from different sellers and dates—not proof of a typical resale value.
Why can a used PS5 Pro cost more than a new one?
Sony’s suggested retail price is a benchmark, not a cap on what an independent seller or retailer can ask. A pre-owned sticker price reflects that seller’s own inventory, replacement costs and estimate of what a buyer will pay. When new stock is difficult to find, some buyers may pay extra for immediate availability, giving sellers a reason to test higher prices. That is a plausible market mechanism, not a proven explanation for every listing.

The new-console benchmark also changed: the Associated Press reported that Sony raised the PS5 Pro’s suggested price by $150, from $749.99 to $899.99, in March 2026, citing global economic pressures. What do the reported prices show?
These US-dollar examples show why it matters to identify the seller, date and type of price. They do not establish a nationwide average or a standard premium.

Game Developer reported that the purported memo said, “the preowned console will have a higher price than the new console – this is intentional.” This is wording attributed to that reported memo, not a public statement from a named executive or an official policy page.
How to estimate what a used PS5 Pro is worth
Start with completed transactions, not just active asking prices. An asking price shows what a seller hopes to receive; it does not show what a buyer paid. - Match the exact configuration. Compare the same model and region, and note whether a disc add-on is included. Treat a console bundled with a controller, games or other accessories separately from a bare console.
- Match condition and completeness. Check whether the listing is used, refurbished or otherwise described, and whether the controller, cables and original accessories are included. Do not assume two listings described as “used” are in equivalent condition.
- Use several recent completed sales. Look for more than one transaction with comparable configuration and condition. A single high sale or a listing that has not sold does not establish the going rate.
- Compare the real checkout cost. Add shipping and tax where applicable, and weigh the seller’s reputation, return terms and any stated warranty against the price.
- Check new-stock availability now. Stock reports can become outdated quickly. Compare the used offer with a currently available new unit, rather than assuming an earlier shortage still applies.
How to judge a high pre-owned offer
Compare the total out-the-door price and protections, not just the headline number. A high retailer sticker price is not Sony’s retail price, and a third-party marketplace asking price is not evidence of a completed sale. Availability, condition, included items and return coverage can make offers meaningfully different even when their listed prices look comparable.
