Most Windows games can run on an Arm laptop, but “runs” has several meanings. Windows 11 can translate x86 and x64 game code with its built-in Prism emulator, while native Arm64 games avoid that translation. The hard compatibility boundary is usually a driver: graphics, controller, launcher, or kernel-level anti-cheat software must have an Arm64 version. To get the best result, update to Windows 11 24H2 or newer, verify the title and anti-cheat support, install current OEM drivers, reduce background load, then tune resolution and GPU-heavy settings. If the game still depends on an unsupported driver, local installation may not be possible; cloud gaming or an x86 PC is the practical fallback.
Compatibility on Windows on Arm is a stack, not a yes-or-no switch
A game has to pass several independent checks before it becomes playable. The Windows executable may be able to run through emulation, yet the game can still fail when it initializes a kernel driver, anti-cheat service, graphics component, or peripheral. Conversely, a title that is not native Arm64 may perform well enough after Windows has translated its CPU instructions.

| Layer | What Windows on Arm can do | Typical failure | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game executable | Windows 11 runs x86 and x64 user-mode applications through emulation. | Crashes, missing instruction support, or poor CPU performance. | Publisher requirements and current reports for the exact game version. |
| CPU instruction set | Prism translates supported x86 instructions into Arm64 code. | Older emulation cannot handle an instruction used by the game. | Windows 11 24H2 or newer, where Microsoft added AVX and AVX2 support to Prism in 2025. |
| Graphics and device drivers | Arm64 drivers supplied by the PC maker can expose the GPU and peripherals. | Black screen, missing GPU, unusable controller, or a game that refuses to start. | OEM graphics, chipset, firmware, audio, network and accessory-driver updates. |
| Kernel anti-cheat | Only an Arm64 kernel component can load on Windows on Arm. | The game launches to a warning, closes immediately, or blocks online play. | Title-specific anti-cheat support, not just the name of the anti-cheat product. |
| Storefront and delivery | The Xbox PC app can install supported games locally on Arm PCs in the 2025 Insider rollout. | No install button or a title that is available only through streaming. | The current Xbox app listing and the game’s regional availability. |

How emulation and native Arm64 builds affect performance
Prism translates user-mode game code
Windows 11 on Arm includes emulation; there is no separate emulator to download. Microsoft describes emulation as transparent to the application, allowing the Windows software ecosystem to run without source-code changes. In Windows 11 24H2, the Prism technology just-in-time compiles blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 code, caches translated blocks and reuses them. That reduces repeated translation work and improves CPU use compared with earlier implementations. Microsoft Learn’s How emulation works on Arm page was updated on November 7, 2025.

Prism handles user-mode code. It cannot translate a kernel-mode driver safely into an Arm driver. A game’s executable, launcher and many libraries can therefore be emulated while a kernel anti-cheat driver still prevents the game from running.
Native Arm64 is the preferred path
A native Arm64 build contains instructions for the processor in the laptop. It avoids x86-to-Arm translation, generally lowers CPU overhead and gives the developer a direct path to the platform’s graphics and power behavior. Use the Arm64 build whenever the publisher offers one. If only x86 or x64 is available, test it on the current Windows and driver versions rather than rejecting it automatically; many games are playable through Prism.
AVX and AVX2 support expands the launchable library
Microsoft reported AVX and AVX2 support in Prism during 2025. This expands the set of modern games that can launch when they use those instruction sets. It does not turn every game into a native Arm64 title, and it does not guarantee a particular frame rate.

- Confirm the Windows build. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and confirm Windows 11 24H2 or a later build. If the PC is on an older release, run Windows Update before judging compatibility. - Check the exact title and edition. Look up the game on WorksOnWoA.com and read the publisher’s current system requirements. Record the edition, launcher, graphics API and any multiplayer requirement; a remaster or an online mode can use different components from the base game.
- Check anti-cheat separately. An emulatable executable is not enough for an online title. Look for a statement that the game’s current anti-cheat configuration supports Windows on Arm, not merely that the anti-cheat vendor supports Arm in some products.
- Confirm driver ownership. Use the support page for the laptop or tablet manufacturer for firmware, chipset and graphics packages. Generic x86 driver installers are not a substitute for an Arm64 driver.
- Decide what “playable” means for you. A turn-based game may be acceptable with occasional stutter, while a competitive shooter needs reliable frame pacing, low input latency and online anti-cheat support. Set that threshold before troubleshooting.
Microsoft lists Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, Denuvo and XIGNCODE3 among anti-cheat systems with Windows-on-Arm support or integration. That list is not a blanket approval: support remains dependent on the individual game, configuration and update level.
Apply this optimization sequence in order
1. Update Windows, firmware and every relevant driver
Install the latest Windows 11 build offered to your device, then check the manufacturer’s support utility or website for firmware, chipset, graphics, audio, network and controller updates. Restart after major packages. Microsoft’s guidance is that hardware and game drivers must be designed for Windows 11 on Arm; an unsupported driver can stop software or a peripheral from working even when the game itself is emulatable.

- Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates and select optional driver updates when the manufacturer identifies them as compatible.
- Install the OEM graphics package rather than forcing a desktop x86 driver. Verify the GPU in Device Manager > Display adapters after the restart.
- Update firmware only with the laptop connected to AC power and according to the manufacturer’s recovery instructions.
- After an update, retest the game before changing graphics settings; a driver fix can alter shader compilation, frame pacing or anti-cheat behavior.
2. Establish a clean baseline
Close browsers with many tabs, game launchers that are not hosting the title, cloud-sync clients, RGB utilities, recording software, overlay tools and hardware monitors. These programs consume CPU time, memory bandwidth and power-budget headroom. Reboot before a difficult test so a background process left by another application is not mistaken for a game problem.
Run the same short section of the game for several minutes and note average FPS, one-percent-low behavior if your overlay reports it, input latency, temperatures and whether the laptop is plugged in. Frame pacing matters: a nominally high average can still feel poor when frames arrive in uneven bursts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Use a sustained power mode
For demanding sessions, connect the original charger and choose the highest performance option exposed by the device. In Windows, check Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode; manufacturers may add a separate performance or fan profile in their control application. Battery-saver modes and quiet thermal profiles can reduce sustained clocks, while a thin laptop may still lower speed after it reaches its thermal limit. Test for ten to fifteen minutes, not just the first minute after launch, so you measure sustained behavior.
Keep vents clear and use a hard surface. A cooling pad can help airflow, but it cannot compensate for an Arm64 driver or anti-cheat incompatibility. If performance drops at the same time temperatures rise, lower GPU load or use a more aggressive fan profile rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
4. Start with a sensible resolution and graphics preset
Begin at 1920×1080 or the device’s recommended native resolution. If the panel is higher resolution, rendering the game at 1080p and allowing the display or an upscaler to handle output is often a better first test than leaving every setting on Ultra. Change one group of settings at a time so you can identify the bottleneck.

| Setting | Lower it when | What usually changes |
|---|---|---|
| Ray tracing | GPU usage is near full and frame rate is low. | Large GPU-load reduction; reflections and lighting become less physically accurate. |
| Volumetrics, fog and cloud quality | Outdoor scenes or weather effects cause major drops. | Less work for the GPU in scenes with particles and atmospheric effects. |
| Shadows and contact shadows | Frame rate falls in crowded or heavily lit areas. | Lower shadow resolution and filtering; geometry and textures remain mostly unchanged. |
| Reflections | Indoor scenes or wet surfaces produce spikes in GPU time. | Fewer or lower-quality reflected objects. |
| Texture quality | Video memory is full or the game stutters when turning the camera. | Lower memory use; image detail at close range can decrease. |
| View distance and crowd density | GPU use is moderate but the CPU is saturated. | Fewer distant objects or simulated characters, reducing CPU and draw-call work. |
Use the game’s built-in upscaler when available. Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a sharper output, usually giving more FPS than simply lowering the display resolution. Compare static detail and motion; aggressive modes can create shimmering or ghosting.
5. Try Auto Super Resolution where it is supported
Microsoft describes Auto Super Resolution as an operating-system-level AI upscaler for DirectX games. It renders at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image to improve frame rate while retaining sharper output. Availability depends on hardware, Windows build and the feature’s rollout status, and some configurations remain preview-dependent. If the option appears in Windows or the game, enable it only after confirming that the title uses a supported DirectX path. Keep the game’s own upscaler disabled initially to avoid stacking two reconstruction passes.
6. Re-test after every meaningful change
Use a repeatable save point, benchmark scene or five-minute route. Record resolution, upscaler mode, quality preset, power mode and driver version. If a change improves the average but worsens stutter, keep the smoother setting. If the game becomes unstable, revert the last change before trying another variable.
Diagnose the bottleneck instead of lowering everything
GPU-limited behavior
Near-constant high GPU utilization, large gains from lowering resolution and slow performance in effects-heavy scenes point to the GPU. Reduce ray tracing, volumetrics, reflections and shadows first, then select a balanced upscaler mode. Lowering texture quality will not help much unless video memory is exhausted.
CPU-limited behavior
Moderate GPU utilization with poor performance in cities, large battles or simulation-heavy scenes points to the CPU. Emulation adds CPU work, and background applications can compete for the same cores. Close background tasks, lower crowd density and view distance, and use the native Arm64 build if one exists. A lower resolution will not fix a CPU limit.

Memory or streaming pressure
Stutters during camera turns, delayed texture appearance and heavy disk activity suggest memory or asset-streaming pressure. Close other applications, keep adequate free storage for shader and game caches, and lower texture quality one step. Do not delete caches repeatedly; the next launch may stutter while they rebuild.
Thermal throttling
If the first minutes are smooth and performance then declines as the chassis heats, compare a plugged-in performance profile with a cooler, capped frame rate. A stable 45 or 60 FPS can feel better than an uncapped rate that repeatedly falls. Improve airflow and avoid soft surfaces before changing the whole graphics preset.
When anti-cheat or a driver blocks launch
Common symptoms include an anti-cheat error before the main menu, an immediate close after the launcher, a message that a service cannot start, or a game that works offline but refuses online matchmaking. These symptoms indicate a compatibility gate rather than insufficient FPS.
- Install the latest game patch and restart Windows. Anti-cheat support can arrive in a title update.
- Check the publisher’s support page for the exact game and current Windows-on-Arm status.
- Repair or reinstall the game’s anti-cheat component using the game launcher’s own repair option. Do not download a replacement driver from an unrelated site.
- Confirm that Windows Security or another security product has not quarantined the service, while following the game publisher’s instructions.
- Reinstall or update the OEM graphics and chipset packages if the error names a device or graphics driver.
- If the title still requires an x86 or x64 kernel driver, stop treating graphics tweaks as a solution. The local installation will remain blocked until the developer supplies an Arm64-compatible component.
Do not bypass anti-cheat or driver signature checks. Such workarounds can violate the game’s rules, weaken system security and still fail after an update.

- Update Windows 11 and install the current Xbox app from Microsoft’s official channel.
- Sign in with the account that owns the subscription or game, then open the title’s store page.
- Look for an Install button and read the requirements shown for that edition. An absent Install button generally means the title is not currently offered for local Arm installation in that configuration.
- Install to a drive with sufficient free space, launch once, and allow the game and any required services to update.
- If the game launches but online play fails, investigate its anti-cheat and driver support separately; Game Pass availability does not override those requirements.
When local installation is unavailable, Xbox Cloud Gaming or another x86 gaming device is the practical alternative. Cloud play removes local CPU, GPU and anti-cheat-driver requirements, but introduces network dependence, streaming compression and input latency.
Choose the right delivery path
| Path | Compatibility | Performance characteristics | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Arm64 build | Requires Arm64 game code and Arm64 drivers; anti-cheat still has to support the title. | Avoids instruction translation and is generally the best local CPU path. | Some games and launchers do not provide an Arm64 build. |
| Emulated x86/x64 build | Works for supported user-mode code; kernel drivers must still be Arm64. | Prism adds translation overhead, though cached blocks and 24H2 improvements can make many games practical. | Frame rate and frame pacing vary by game, build, driver and laptop thermals. |
| Cloud gaming | The remote server runs the game, so local Arm compatibility is largely irrelevant. | Local rendering load is low. | Requires a reliable, low-latency connection; image quality and controls depend on the stream. |
| Separate x86 PC | Uses the game’s conventional Windows target and driver ecosystem. | Broadest established compatibility and, in many systems, higher sustained performance. | Requires another computer and does not provide the portability or battery advantages of an Arm laptop. |
For a single-player title, an emulated local build may be the best compromise. For a competitive online game whose anti-cheat is unsupported, cloud play or an x86 PC avoids waiting for a driver update. For a game with a native Arm64 release, use that build first.
Understand Microsoft’s graphics-performance claims
Microsoft reported up to 2.3× ray-tracing performance gains for DirectX 1.2 features on compatible hardware and supported scenarios in 2025. That is a feature-level result, not a universal Windows-on-Arm game benchmark and not a promise of 2.3× higher whole-game FPS. Your result depends on the GPU, driver, game engine, resolution, ray-tracing workload and thermal limits.
The same qualification applies to any vendor or community compatibility report: a result on one Snapdragon laptop, Windows build or driver cannot be copied directly to another model. Record your own settings and sustained frame pacing after updating the platform.
A practical decision checklist
- Will it launch? The executable must be supported by Prism or available as Arm64, and every required driver must be Arm64.
- Will online play work? Confirm the title’s current anti-cheat configuration, not only the anti-cheat vendor’s general platform support.
- Can the laptop sustain it? Test while plugged in for at least several minutes, watch temperatures and frame pacing, and keep vents unobstructed.
- What should you tune first? Close background workloads, select a sustained performance mode, lower ray tracing and volumetrics, then use an upscaler.
- What if local play is blocked? Check for a native Arm64 or updated game build; otherwise choose cloud gaming or an x86 PC rather than attempting unsafe driver workarounds.
The bottom line for Windows on Arm gaming
Windows on Arm is no longer limited to native Arm64 games: Windows 11 24H2’s Prism emulation, including 2025 AVX and AVX2 support, lets many x86 and x64 titles run. The decisive checks are still Arm64 drivers and title-specific anti-cheat support. Update the platform, verify the game before installing, test with a clean and plugged-in system, tune the settings that match your bottleneck, and use cloud gaming or an x86 PC when a kernel component makes local play impossible.
