If you’re playing The Witcher 3 Remastered on PC and performance is poor, first turn NVIDIA HairWorks off and replay the same scene. CD PROJEKT RED says the feature may significantly affect performance, though its October 1, 2026 PC Hotfix 5.00c also reverted a change that had caused HairWorks-related problems for some players. Treat the toggle as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix. Then adjust resolution, check drivers and game files, and isolate background software—one change at a time.
Check which PC version you’re running
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered released on September 29, 2026, and PC Hotfix 5.00c followed on October 1. Older guides may describe earlier builds, so confirm whether you’re on Remastered or have reverted to an earlier version, and whether the current hotfix is installed. CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered announcement and PC Hotfix 5.00c notice establish that recent context. The official Remastered FAQ says reverting may be possible depending on platform; storefront downgrade options can differ.

Make a repeatable baseline before changing settings
Choose a location where the problem is easy to reproduce, such as a busy settlement or a stretch of road where you regularly see stutter. Note your output resolution, graphics settings, HairWorks state, approximate frame rate, and whether the issue is a low average, sudden hitch, or uneven motion. Replay the same scene after each adjustment, changing one thing at a time. This will not produce a controlled benchmark, but it makes it easier to tell whether a change helped on your PC.

Turn HairWorks off, then repeat your baseline scene. CD PROJEKT RED’s live HairWorks support notice says enabling it may significantly affect performance and recommends disabling it until the issue is addressed. The qualification matters: Hotfix 5.00c says a change that caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users was reverted. The hotfix fixed a particular regression, but the live support advice still makes an off-versus-on comparison worthwhile. If disabling it makes no measurable difference in your repeatable scene, move on rather than assuming HairWorks is the cause.

Reduce the number of pixels the PC has to render
Lowering output resolution is a direct way to reduce graphics workload, especially when the GPU is the limiting factor. CD PROJEKT RED illustrates the scale of the difference: 5120 × 2880 is 14,745,600 pixels, while 2560 × 1440 is 3,686,400, or about one quarter as many. That is a pixel-count comparison, not a Witcher 3 frame-rate benchmark; the higher resolution does not automatically make performance four times worse. Scene, gameplay, system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution all affect results.
Try resolution scaling if available
Instead of lowering the display’s output resolution, test the game’s available resolution-scaling option. Scaling renders at a lower resolution and upscales the result to look closer to the higher output resolution, trading some native detail for lower rendering demands. The image may look softer or show other differences, and the result depends on the build, scaling implementation, settings, and hardware. Compare the same scene for both smoothness and image quality. CD PROJEKT RED explains the pixel workload and scaling trade-off in its resolution performance guide.

- Clean-install the graphics driver. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, install a previous driver version instead; CD PROJEKT RED advises reporting the issue in that case.
- Verify the game files. Use your storefront’s file-integrity or repair option to check for damaged or missing files. The exact menu path varies by storefront.
- Disable overlays. Temporarily turn off game, chat, recording, and performance-monitoring overlays, then test the same scene again.
- Close unnecessary background apps. Shut down programs you do not need while playing, including monitoring tools, and compare performance.
A driver reinstall or file check is not a promise of a frame-rate increase; these steps help rule out software and installation problems. If the issue started after a specific change, undo or isolate that change before making several new ones.
Check storage and system requirements if stutter persists
CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements say an SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements and associate SSD storage with faster loading and smoother asset streaming. If the game is installed on an HDD, a compatible SSD is a sensible storage upgrade to investigate, particularly when hitches coincide with loading or streaming. The requirements page does not establish that an SSD will fix every stutter or produce a particular FPS increase.
The same requirements information says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported or tested; it does not say the game necessarily stops working on it. The page also notes that its FPS targets are based on QA tests and that actual performance fluctuates by scene and gameplay and varies with system, settings, and output resolution. Use those statements as support guidance, not as a diagnosis of your individual PC.

Choose between image quality and steadier performance
There is no universal best preset for every Remastered PC. If image detail and effects matter most, keep more demanding settings and accept that frame rates may be lower or less consistent on your hardware. If responsiveness matters more, reduce expensive rendering demands—starting with HairWorks and resolution or scaling—and compare the visible trade-off in a scene you actually play.

CD PROJEKT RED’s release announcement describes the updated edition, while its current requirements do not establish one preset that suits all systems. Avoid relying on old DX11-versus-DX12 comparisons as a universal answer for Remastered; the current official information cited here does not verify renderer-specific performance advice.
Send useful details if the problem remains
If none of the checks changes the problem, report it to CD PROJEKT RED with a video if possible. If the stutter occurs in a particular location, the support team asks for the relevant save file as well. A repeatable clip and location-specific save can help distinguish a general performance issue from one tied to a particular scene.
