For the largest immediate FPS improvement, run KytyPS5 with performance-mode occlusion: leave “Accurate occlusion queries (slower; fixes rare visibility issues)” disabled. Accurate queries can cost about half the frame rate in the heaviest levels. Then verify a working Vulkan 1.3 driver, test one repeatable game scene, and change one variable at a time while measuring CPU and GPU frame time.
KytyPS5 is experimental, so there is no universal 60 FPS setting or single shader-cache cure. Build, game, driver, operating system, scene and hardware all affect the result. Record the exact build and report regressions with your complete system details.

What KytyPS5 performance depends on
KytyPS5 is a free, open-source PlayStation 5 translation layer written in C++ for Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. It is actively developed, and behavior can change significantly between builds. Windows and Linux receive the most testing; on Apple Silicon, macOS runs through Rosetta 2 with Vulkan supplied by MoltenVK. Compatibility, stability and speed therefore vary by platform and version.

The renderer targets Vulkan 1.3. A correctly installed Vulkan 1.3 driver and a GPU with reliable Vulkan 1.3 support are prerequisites, not optional optimizations. If Vulkan initialization fails, or the driver falls back to an incomplete path, changing in-game settings will not solve the underlying problem.

Do not treat a fast test result as a minimum specification. The Jetsku fork README states, “No 60 FPS result is claimed.” That is consistent with the project’s experimental status: a scene that reaches a high frame rate on one build and machine does not establish a guaranteed target for every game.
Apply the highest-impact setting first
Use performance-mode occlusion
U59 int17 makes performance-mode occlusion the default. In this mode, occlusion queries are answered as visible rather than asking the GPU thousands of times per frame whether objects are hidden. The release notes say that accurate queries cost about half the frame rate in the heaviest levels.
- Open the KytyPS5 launcher.
- Find Accurate occlusion queries (slower; fixes rare visibility issues).
- Leave the option unchecked for normal play and FPS testing.
- Restart the game and test the same area you used before changing the setting.
The environment equivalent documented by the project is KYTY_GPU_OCCLUSION=0. Use the launcher option when available; use the environment variable only when your installation or launch script requires it.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do not confuse this option with a conventional graphics-quality slider. It changes how the emulator handles visibility queries, so the effect can be much larger than a small resolution adjustment. The right baseline is performance mode, then a controlled comparison against accurate mode only when you have a visible rendering problem.
When accurate occlusion is worth trying
Enable accurate queries only when you can reproduce a visibility error, such as geometry or effects appearing through walls. Compare the same scene with the option off and on, and keep the slower mode only if the visual correction matters more than the lost frame rate. If the scene becomes dramatically slower, that is expected behavior rather than evidence that your GPU is defective.
What published FPS numbers actually show
The U59 int17 release notes measured specific scenes on an NVIDIA RTX 3090 and AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D test PC. The build used for those figures lacked a release-profile optimization that the notes say adds about 15%, so the numbers are reference measurements, not promises for your computer.
| Scene | U59 int17, performance mode | Earlier int16.1 notes | Accurate mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snow | 45 FPS | 41 FPS | 20 FPS |
| Clock tower | 35 FPS | 31 FPS | Not stated |
| Ape Escape | 38 FPS | 31 FPS | Not stated |
| Sky Garden | 31 FPS | 30 FPS | Not stated |
| Volcano | 59 FPS | 59 FPS | Not stated |
These results demonstrate the scale of an occlusion-setting change and the variation between scenes. They do not define a universal minimum GPU, CPU or frame-rate target. The int16.1 notes’ 20 FPS snow result in accurate mode is a useful warning about the cost of correctness, not a prediction for another game or build.

A development build, a release build and a later optimization may all produce different numbers on the same hardware. Quote the build and scene whenever you share an FPS result; “KytyPS5 runs at 45 FPS” is incomplete without that context.
A repeatable FPS and stutter workflow
1. Record the baseline
Before changing settings, write down the KytyPS5 build, game version, operating system, CPU, GPU, graphics-driver version and the scene used for testing. Choose an area you can reach consistently, such as the same room, level entrance or saved position. Record average FPS and whether the problem is a steady low frame rate, uneven frame pacing or short pauses.

You can also check the charging status via the LED indicator next to it: red means charging, green means fully charged/standby.
For frame pacing, look beyond the headline FPS number. A run averaging 40 FPS can feel smoother than one averaging 45 FPS if the first has evenly spaced frames and the second has repeated long spikes. Note the worst visible hitch, approximate duration and whether it happens at the same camera turn or effect each time.
2. Update deliberately, not blindly
Install a current KytyPS5 build from the project’s release channel, but preserve the previous known-good build until you have tested the new one. Because behavior can change significantly between builds, an update can improve one game while regressing another. Keep the exact version number with every measurement.
Do not combine an emulator update with a driver update if you are trying to identify a cause. Test the old pair, update one component, repeat the route, and only then update the other component. This takes longer but prevents a coincidental improvement from being attributed to the wrong change.
3. Verify the Vulkan path
Confirm that KytyPS5 starts through Vulkan 1.3 and that the GPU driver is current for your card. A driver update is relevant when it fixes Vulkan initialization, shader compilation or a game-specific rendering fault; it is not a guaranteed FPS multiplier. If the emulator reports a Vulkan error, solve that before comparing graphics settings.
On a multi-GPU system, verify that KytyPS5 is using the intended Vulkan adapter rather than an integrated GPU. Also check that the driver reports Vulkan 1.3 support for that adapter. A perfectly tuned emulator cannot recover performance lost by launching on the wrong device.
4. Establish performance mode
Run the baseline scene with accurate occlusion disabled. Do not change resolution, frame-rate limits, synchronization or other options at the same time. This isolates the documented high-impact setting and gives you a clean comparison with the published behavior.
5. Test accurate occlusion only for a visual fault
If you see objects through walls or missing visibility-dependent effects, repeat the scene with accurate occlusion enabled. Note both the visual change and the FPS change. If no visual defect exists, return to performance mode.
6. Classify the stutter
Watch GPU utilization, GPU frame time, CPU utilization and per-core CPU activity while repeating the same camera movement. A sustained GPU limit points toward graphics workload or occlusion cost. A sustained CPU or translation limit points toward processor work. A brief pause that appears the first time an effect or area is encountered is consistent with shader or driver compilation; it should be logged separately from a continuously low frame rate.
Use the same route for at least two passes. If the hitch occurs only on the first pass and is absent on the second, it is probably a first-use event rather than a permanent frame-rate ceiling. If it repeats at every pass, classify it as recurring stutter and capture the exact trigger.

7. Change one variable per test
After the occlusion comparison, alter only one setting or software component at a time. Use the same scene and route, and write down the result. This prevents a driver update, build change and graphics option from being incorrectly credited for the same improvement.

Diagnose whether the CPU or GPU is the bottleneck
Signs of a GPU-limited run
- GPU utilization remains high while GPU frame time tracks the slow frame rate.
- Reducing a GPU-heavy option or changing the occlusion mode produces a measurable improvement.
- CPU activity is available but the graphics card is consistently saturated in the same scene.
For this case, performance-mode occlusion is the first documented intervention. A faster Vulkan-capable GPU can also help, but the RTX 3090 used in the release notes is a test reference, not a minimum requirement.
Signs of a CPU or translation-limited run
- One or more CPU cores remain busy while GPU utilization is well below its sustained maximum.
- GPU frame time is short but total frame time remains high.
- The slowdown follows simulation, draw-call translation or shader-related CPU work rather than a particular visual effect.
Measure CPU frametime before buying a processor. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D is the named CPU in the published test platform, but the available evidence does not establish that every KytyPS5 user needs that processor.
Why average utilization can mislead
An average CPU percentage can look moderate when one busy thread is limiting the frame. Look at per-core activity and frame-time spikes, not only the overall percentage. Similarly, a GPU may show a lower average utilization if the CPU intermittently starves it. Repeat the route long enough to distinguish a sustained limit from a short compilation pause.
Reduce and investigate shader-related stutter
Shader and driver compilation can produce a pause when a new effect, material or area is encountered. The reliable response is to identify the trigger and compare builds or drivers; the official project material does not promise that one cache deletion, patch or setting removes every stutter.
- Start from a clean, repeatable save or area.
- Run the same path twice and note whether the pause occurs only on the first pass.
- Record the effect or location that triggers it, along with frame-time behavior before and after the pause.
- Repeat after a KytyPS5 build or Vulkan-driver change, changing only that variable.
- If the pause remains, include the observation in a report rather than claiming that a cache has permanently fixed it.
A first-run hitch and a sustained low FPS problem require different diagnoses. Performance-mode occlusion addresses the latter when query overhead is the limit; it is not a universal shader-compilation solution.
Avoid deleting every cache as a first response. Cache behavior can be build- and driver-dependent, and removing files may simply force the same compilation work again. Preserve logs and compare first-run and second-run behavior before deciding that a cache is corrupt.
Hardware decisions without overbuying
| Possible limit | Evidence to collect | Hardware reference from published testing | What the reference does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vulkan rendering or occlusion saturates the GPU | GPU frame time and utilization remain high in the repeatable scene | NVIDIA RTX 3090 | It is not a minimum specification or a guarantee of 60 FPS |
| CPU translation or shader work limits frame time | Per-core CPU activity and CPU frame time remain high while GPU capacity is available | AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D | Every user does not need this processor |
Use the table as a comparison framework, not a shopping requirement. If your measurements show a GPU limit, compare Vulkan-capable GPUs. If they show a CPU limit, compare processors with strong single-thread and overall performance. If neither component is saturated and the problem is a one-time hitch, a hardware purchase may not address it.

The RTX 3090 and Ryzen 9 7950X3D identify the hardware used for the published measurements; they do not establish a minimum specification, a recommended retail tier or a guaranteed return on investment. Check your own frame-time data before spending money. There are no universal prices or upgrade costs that can be responsibly attached to KytyPS5 performance because results depend on the exact scene and build.
Platform-specific expectations
Windows and Linux
These platforms receive the most KytyPS5 testing. Keep the operating system, emulator build and Vulkan driver version together in your notes because a change in any one of them can alter compatibility or frame pacing.
macOS
macOS support is experimental. On Apple Silicon, KytyPS5 runs through Rosetta 2 and uses Vulkan supplied by MoltenVK. That extra translation layer means results should not be compared directly with Windows or Linux numbers. Report the Mac model, architecture, macOS version and MoltenVK path when seeking help.

Expecting a universal 60 FPS result
No source establishes a universal 60 FPS target. The project’s fork README explicitly says no 60 FPS result is claimed, and the release measurements range from 31 to 59 FPS across named scenes even on the specified high-end test PC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLeaving accurate occlusion enabled by accident
Because the option sounds like a quality improvement, it is easy to enable it permanently. Check the launcher before every controlled comparison. Return to performance mode unless you are correcting a reproducible visibility error.
Comparing different scenes or builds
A volcano result cannot be used to predict a snow or clock-tower result, and an int16.1 result cannot be treated as an int17 result. Reuse the same scene and preserve the exact build number.
Calling every pause “shader stutter”
Separate first-use compilation pauses from sustained CPU or GPU limitation. Measure frame time and utilization during the event, then describe the trigger in your report.
Reporting without system details
A useful report includes the KytyPS5 build, game, operating system, CPU, GPU, driver, settings, repeatable location, expected behavior, observed behavior and complete log. Without those details, maintainers cannot reliably compare your result with another build or machine.
How to document a useful result
Use a compact record for every test:
- Build: exact KytyPS5 version or commit.
- Game and scene: title, level, save point and route.
- System: operating system, CPU, GPU and RAM configuration if relevant.
- Driver: exact Vulkan graphics-driver version.
- Settings: occlusion mode and any other changed option.
- Measurements: average FPS, worst observed frame-time spike and CPU/GPU indicators.
- Symptoms: missing geometry, objects through walls, first-run hitch, recurring pause or sustained low FPS.
- Logs: the complete emulator log when reporting a regression.
Include whether the test was a first run or repeat run, whether accurate occlusion was enabled, and whether the result changed after restarting the emulator. Those small details often explain why two users report different stutter patterns.

This record lets you distinguish a real improvement from normal scene-to-scene variation and gives maintainers enough context to investigate a build-specific problem.
The practical order is therefore clear: verify Vulkan 1.3, update while retaining a known-good build, use performance-mode occlusion, test one repeatable scene, identify whether CPU or GPU frame time dominates, and document any regression precisely. Those steps can improve measured FPS and make stutter diagnosable without promising performance that the project has not claimed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest KytyPS5 FPS setting to try?
Leave “Accurate occlusion queries (slower; fixes rare visibility issues)” disabled so KytyPS5 uses performance-mode occlusion. The project documents accurate queries as substantially slower in heavy scenes.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does KytyPS5 stutter when shaders load?
A first encounter with an effect, material or area can trigger shader or driver compilation. Repeat the same route twice and record whether the pause happens only on the first pass. Treat that event separately from sustained low FPS.
Should I enable accurate occlusion to improve graphics?
Only enable it when you can reproduce a visibility problem such as objects appearing through walls. It improves query correctness but can reduce performance sharply; otherwise keep performance mode enabled.
Is an RTX 3090 required for KytyPS5?
No. An RTX 3090 is the GPU in the published reference test, not a minimum specification or a 60 FPS guarantee. Measure your GPU frame time and Vulkan support before considering an upgrade.
Is a Ryzen 9 7950X3D required?
No. It is the CPU used in the named test platform. Buy or upgrade only after per-core activity and CPU frame time show that translation or shader work is limiting your run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes KytyPS5 guarantee 60 FPS?
No. The Jetsku fork README explicitly says no 60 FPS result is claimed, and published results vary by scene, build and hardware.
What details should I include in a KytyPS5 stutter report?
Include the exact build, game and scene, operating system, CPU, GPU, Vulkan driver, settings, repeatable steps, measured FPS or frame-time spikes, symptoms and the complete emulator log.
Are Windows, Linux and macOS performance directly comparable?
Not reliably. Windows and Linux receive the most testing, while macOS support is experimental and Apple Silicon uses Rosetta 2 with Vulkan supplied by MoltenVK. Record the platform path with every result.
The Bottom Line
Start with performance-mode occlusion, verify Vulkan 1.3, and benchmark one repeatable scene. Use accurate occlusion only to correct a reproducible visibility error, then classify remaining pauses as GPU-, CPU- or compilation-related before changing hardware or reporting a regression.
