Start with the commission, not the fabric shelf
Open the commission and read it from beginning to end before spending money. Treat the text as a checklist, not as flavor writing. Record every mandatory quality, silhouette or style cue, color, material, decoration, target quality, and budget limit.

Use the sketchbook to test the silhouette, fabric, colors, and accessories against the commission. Compare the estimated fabric use and the requirement list before you cut anything. If two concepts both satisfy the brief, favor the one that leaves enough money for mandatory components and gives you the simplest path to accurate construction.
Fit the garment before you sew
Fit is the first technical check because every later operation depends on the mannequin being the right size. Take the client’s measurements carefully, then set the mannequin to those true measurements before assembling the dress. Recheck the setting before pinning or joining pieces.

A measurement-first sequence
- Open the client or commission information and identify the measurements you must reproduce.
- Measure the client methodically rather than estimating from the requested style.
- Enter those values on the mannequin and confirm that no field retained an earlier client’s size.
- Look at the planned pattern on the mannequin before committing to assembly.
- If the proportions look wrong, correct the mannequin now. Do not expect a precise seam to repair a fundamentally incorrect size.
The fit component is reported as 20 points, so it is smaller than sewing in the community weighting, but a wrong base size can also make later placement and preview decisions misleading. Fit is therefore an early gate, not a last-minute polish step.
Align the grain before cutting

Use decoration to satisfy the brief
Decoration affects the customer’s requested look, but it cannot rescue poor fit, incorrect grain alignment, or inaccurate stitching. Add the details named in the commission after the main construction is sound. Keep optional embellishment within the remaining budget and consistent with the requested style.
When choosing between two otherwise valid designs, spend first on mandatory color, material, and accessories. Add discretionary detail only after those items are secured. A simpler design that meets every requirement is safer than an elaborate design that consumes the allowance or shifts the silhouette away from the brief.
Preview before consuming fabric
The mannequin preview is the cheapest point at which to catch a bad decision. In the sketchbook, compare the proposed design, fabric estimate, and requirement list. Then preview the assembled pieces on the mannequin before committing cloth to the final construction.
What to inspect in the preview
- Whether the silhouette still matches the commission’s style cue.

Assuming a perfect seam fixes a wrong size
It does not. Accurate sewing preserves the shape you built; it cannot transform an incorrectly measured mannequin into the client’s size.
Skipping the grain indicator
