The reliable way to improve Cyberpunk 2077 screenshot performance is to benchmark first, clean up drivers and background software, identify whether the GPU or CPU is limiting you, then change one graphics setting at a time. For ordinary play, prioritize a stable rendered frame rate. For Photo Mode, you can accept a capture that takes seconds or minutes in exchange for path tracing, higher resolution, and better image quality.
Use this order: run the built-in benchmark, record the result, update or clean-install the graphics driver, verify the game files, disable overlays, test for a GPU or CPU limit, enable upscaling before cutting every visual setting, and reserve Ray Tracing: Overdrive for the final capture pass when necessary.

Decide which kind of performance you need
“Better screenshot performance” can mean three different things, and each requires a different compromise.
| Goal | What you notice | Best priority |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive gameplay and Photo Mode setup | Stable movement, responsive camera controls, and consistent frame pacing | Rendered base FPS, CPU/GPU balance, and low stutter |
| Fast screenshot capture | The image saves quickly after you press the capture key | Lower output resolution or ray-tracing load during the capture |
| Highest final image quality | Cleaner lighting, reflections, shadows, and anti-aliasing in the saved file | High ray tracing or path tracing, high output resolution, and enough time for the render to finish |
A screenshot that takes a minute to render is not the same problem as a game that runs at a low frame rate while you walk through Night City. Both are limited by available hardware, but the remedy is different. Compose the scene with comfortable settings, then increase capture quality only when you are ready to take the final image.

1. Establish a repeatable baseline
Do not tune from a single subjective impression. Use the built-in benchmark and repeat the same test after each meaningful change.
- Launch Cyberpunk 2077 and open the graphics settings.
- Write down the display resolution, preset, ray-tracing or Overdrive state, upscaler mode, frame-generation state, graphics-driver version, average FPS, and any visible hitching.
- Run the built-in benchmark and let it finish without changing windows or moving other applications into focus.
- Save the result, including the worst-looking stutters you noticed rather than only the average FPS.
- Change one setting or one group of closely related settings, then run the same benchmark again.
Patch 1.62 expanded the benchmark report to include the PC specification, graphics-driver version, and selected settings. If you need to report a persistent problem to CD PROJEKT RED, the benchmark-results folder is part of the information its troubleshooting guidance asks you to collect.
Keep the same save location and camera route when comparing results. A busy market, a driving sequence, and an empty interior can produce very different GPU and CPU loads, so changing the scene at the same time as the settings makes the result hard to interpret.

Install or clean-install the graphics driver
Install the current driver for your GPU. If the problem began after an update or survives a normal installation, use the driver’s clean-install option and reboot before testing again. A driver update can fix a game-specific fault, shader issue, or compatibility problem, but it does not guarantee a particular FPS increase; the result depends on the GPU, driver version, game patch, and failure mode.
Verify the game files
Use your launcher’s file-verification command to check the installation. Damaged or missing files can cause crashes, texture-streaming errors, or repeated hitching that no graphics slider can fix. Allow the verification and any repair operation to finish before launching the game again.
Disable overlays one at a time
Temporarily disable overlays from your chat app, game launcher, capture utility, performance monitor, and GPU software. CD PROJEKT RED specifically lists overlay applications and unnecessary background programs as troubleshooting targets. Test each change separately so you know which overlay was involved; you can restore the others after finding the culprit.
Close unnecessary background applications
Quit browsers with many active tabs, video encoders, file-indexing jobs, RGB-control utilities, and other programs that consume CPU time, GPU memory, or disk bandwidth. Do not assume that a small application is harmless: several monitoring and capture tools can hook into the game’s rendering path at the same time.

3. Identify whether the GPU or CPU is limiting you
The correct setting depends on the component that is saturated. Watch GPU utilization, GPU memory, CPU utilization by core, clock speeds, temperatures, and frame-time graphs while repeating the same scene.
| Symptom | Likely limit | First test |
|---|---|---|
| GPU utilization stays near its limit, and lowering resolution or the upscaler mode improves FPS | GPU-limited rendering | Enable an upscaler, reduce ray-tracing quality, or lower output resolution |
| GPU utilization is well below its limit, but dense streets and crowds remain slow | CPU or game-thread limit | Test crowd density, close background programs, and compare a quiet interior with a busy street |
| Average FPS looks acceptable but the frame-time graph has spikes | Streaming, shader compilation, overlays, drivers, or background activity | Verify files, clean-install the driver, disable overlays, and test from an SSD |
| Only ray tracing or Overdrive causes the collapse | Ray-tracing GPU workload | Use an upscaler first, then lower ray-tracing quality or reserve the mode for capture |
CD PROJEKT RED describes the game as both graphics- and processor-intensive. That is why a lower resolution does not always solve slow city scenes: if the processor is the constraint, the GPU may simply wait for the next batch of simulation and draw calls.
4. Use upscaling before removing every visual effect
Upscaling lowers the internal rendering resolution and reconstructs the image at your selected output resolution. On a GPU-limited system, it is usually the largest performance lever that preserves more detail than simply switching off every expensive effect.
DLSS on supported NVIDIA hardware
DLSS is available on compatible NVIDIA GPUs. CD PROJEKT RED recommends enabling upscaling on cards with 16 GB or less of VRAM when playing at 1440p or higher. Start with the quality-oriented DLSS mode your GPU can sustain, then move toward a more performance-oriented mode only if the benchmark still misses your target.

Patch 2.21 adds DLSS 4 support. Compatible RTX 50-series cards can use Multi Frame Generation, while the Transformer model applies to Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction across RTX cards. Those features are separate from the basic upscaling decision: first make the rendered base stable, then test the additional reconstruction or frame-generation options.
FSR 3 on compatible hardware
FSR 3 combines upscaling and frame generation and works across a broader range of hardware. FSR Frame Generation requires FSR 3 upscaling to be enabled; it is not an independent switch that can be used with a native-resolution render.
For frame generation to behave properly, CD PROJEKT RED recommends reaching at least 60 FPS before enabling it, using a display with a 120 Hz or higher refresh rate, and enabling hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. Treat those generated frames as a second-stage smoothness feature. They can raise the displayed frame rate, but they do not replace the responsiveness, input-to-photon behavior, or frame pacing of a strong rendered base.
A practical upscaling sequence
- Keep ray tracing and Overdrive off temporarily and run the benchmark at your intended output resolution.
- Enable DLSS or FSR 3 in its quality-oriented mode.
- Benchmark again and inspect both average FPS and frame-time spikes.
- If the GPU is still saturated, choose a more performance-oriented upscaler mode before disabling multiple other effects.
- Only after the rendered base is stable should you test frame generation.
5. Tune ray tracing and Overdrive for the capture you actually want
Standard ray tracing is demanding; Ray Tracing: Overdrive is path tracing and is substantially heavier than conventional ray-traced or raster rendering. CD PROJEKT RED currently recommends Overdrive on NVIDIA RTX 40-series hardware beginning with the RTX 4070 Ti and above. Its 2160p/60 FPS reference configuration uses an RTX 4080 with DLSS Frame Generation enabled.

Use a two-pass Photo Mode workflow
- Explore and compose the shot with Overdrive disabled if it makes movement, camera positioning, or lighting adjustments uncomfortable.
- Save the camera angle, pose, and composition before changing the expensive settings.
- Enable the highest ray-tracing mode your GPU can complete reliably for the final image.
- Use the Photo Mode option that applies path tracing to screenshots when you want the path-traced result without making the entire exploration session run in that mode.
- Press capture once and wait for the render to finish; avoid interpreting the capture delay as a normal gameplay FPS reading.
CD PROJEKT RED warns that higher resolution and a less powerful GPU can extend screenshot time from a few seconds to several minutes. That delay is expected when the final image requires a large path-traced render. If you need a fast series of images, reduce the output resolution or return to standard ray tracing for the capture pass.
When to reduce ray tracing
- Lower ray-tracing quality when the GPU is at full utilization and the upscaler is already at a tolerable mode.
- Disable Overdrive during navigation if camera movement stutters or the capture queue makes composition impractical.
- Keep path tracing for hero shots where the lighting improvement matters more than an immediate save.
6. Match the hardware to the target
CD PROJEKT RED’s current reference requirements illustrate why there is no single “best” setting for every PC.
| Reference tier | Target | Graphics mode and hardware note | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum, non-ray-traced | 1080p at 30 FPS | Non-ray-traced minimum configuration | 70 GB SSD |
| Recommended, non-ray-traced | 1080p at 60 FPS | Non-ray-traced recommended configuration | 70 GB SSD |
| Ultra, non-ray-traced | 2160p at 60 FPS | Non-ray-traced Ultra reference tier | 70 GB SSD |
| Minimum, ray-traced | 1080p at 30 FPS | Ray-tracing minimum configuration | 70 GB SSD |
| Recommended, ray-traced | 1080p at 60 FPS | Ray-tracing recommended configuration | 70 GB SSD |
| Ray Tracing: Overdrive | 2160p at 60 FPS | RTX 4080 reference configuration with DLSS Frame Generation enabled | 70 GB NVMe |
These are reference tiers, not a promise for every scene, patch, driver, or monitor. The game requires DirectX 12 and stresses both the processor and graphics card. If your target is ordinary 1080p gameplay, buying a top-end GPU is unnecessary; if your target is 2160p path-traced Photo Mode captures, the workload is fundamentally different.

The official requirements call for a 70 GB SSD for the standard tiers and a 70 GB NVMe drive for the 2160p Overdrive tier. An SSD or NVMe drive can reduce loading delays and improve asset-streaming behavior compared with a hard drive. It does not replace a capable GPU for ray-traced screenshots and should not be presented as a guaranteed average-FPS upgrade.
Consider storage when the symptoms are delayed texture or geometry streaming, long level loads, or hitching that coincides with disk activity. If the GPU is already saturated during a still frame, faster storage will not remove that rendering limit.
8. Apply a setting recipe for your bottleneck
GPU-limited at 1080p or 1440p
- Keep the chosen output resolution.
- Enable DLSS or FSR 3 in a quality-oriented mode.
- Benchmark and check frame times.
- Reduce ray-tracing quality if utilization remains pinned.
- Use frame generation only after the rendered base reaches the recommended baseline for that feature.
GPU-limited at 4K or during Overdrive captures
- Compose the shot with path tracing disabled.
- Enable an upscaler before lowering the output resolution.
- For a final still, enable Photo Mode path tracing and allow the capture to finish.
- If the wait is unacceptable, lower capture resolution or switch from Overdrive to standard ray tracing.
CPU-limited in dense city scenes
- Compare a busy street with a quiet interior at the same graphics settings.
- Test crowd-density changes and close unnecessary CPU-heavy background applications.
- Keep an eye on per-core utilization rather than relying only on total CPU percentage.
- Do not expect a lower output resolution to solve a processor-side limit.
Stutter with no clear GPU or CPU limit
- Clean-install the graphics driver.
- Verify the game files.
- Disable overlays individually.
- Move the installation to an SSD or NVMe drive if streaming and disk activity coincide with the hitch.
- Repeat the benchmark and compare frame-time graphs, not just average FPS.
9. A repeatable screenshot checklist
- Record the baseline benchmark, driver version, resolution, upscaler, ray-tracing state, and frame-generation state.
- Finish driver, file-verification, overlay, and background-application checks before changing the preset.
- Classify the problem as GPU-limited, CPU-limited, or streaming-related.
- Enable DLSS or FSR 3 before sacrificing every other visual setting.
- Keep frame generation as a second-stage feature and maintain a strong rendered base first.
- Compose Photo Mode scenes in a responsive mode, then enable path tracing for the final capture when image quality is the priority.
- Allow for a capture that takes seconds or minutes at high resolution; that is a render-time trade-off, not necessarily a gameplay fault.
- Run the identical benchmark after each change and keep the setting that improves the target you actually care about.
There is no universal FPS percentage for these changes. Resolution, CPU and GPU model, VRAM, ray-tracing mode, upscaler, driver, patch, and scene complexity all alter the result. A disciplined before-and-after benchmark is more useful than a claimed number that does not match your PC.
