To make an Android phone last longer during a gaming session, lower screen brightness and the game’s frame rate or visual settings, use a battery-focused game mode if your phone offers one, and keep the device cool. These changes can trade smoothness, image quality, background activity, or connectivity for longer play. Exact settings and results depend on your phone, Android version, game, and network.
Start with the settings that affect the screen and game
The display stays on throughout play, while demanding graphics and processing add to power use. Google lists playing graphics-heavy and highly interactive games among activities to avoid when trying to save battery. The following adjustments can reduce the workload, but there is no established universal number of extra minutes they will provide.

Lower brightness
Reduce screen brightness to a comfortable level. Google lists reduced brightness as a battery-saving setting; lowering it is often a straightforward place to start without changing how the game runs.
Reduce frame rate or visual detail in the game
If the game offers graphics controls, try a lower frame-rate cap, resolution, shadow quality, or other demanding effects. Lower frame rates can feel less fluid, while reduced resolution and effects can make the image look less detailed. Try one setting at a time so you can decide which tradeoff is acceptable.

Match display refresh rate to the game
If your phone has a refresh-rate control, check whether it can be set closer to the game’s frame-rate target. Android Developers says higher refresh rates use more display power; when the refresh rate exceeds the game’s target frame rate, the extra refresh rate provides no benefit in that circumstance while increasing display power use. Lowering it can make motion feel less smooth, so compare the result in the game you play.
Use a game-specific battery mode when available
Android Game Mode is available starting with Android 12 on selected devices, not every Android phone. Its effect and controls depend on the phone, software version, and game. Android Developers describes Game Mode as letting users choose whether to trade performance for battery life, battery life for performance, or a neutral default.

Check your phone’s game settings
Look for a game mode or battery option in the phone’s gaming app or game settings. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip6 manual describes a Battery saver option in Gaming Hub. That name and location should not be assumed to apply to other Samsung models or Android phones.

Choose system Battery Saver for longer sessions
Android’s Battery Saver can help when preserving charge matters more than uninterrupted background activity or every visual and network feature. Google says it can limit background activity and cause delays to visual effects, features, network connections, and apps. A game may behave differently with Battery Saver enabled, so check whether its connection, notifications, or other needed functions still work.

Google generally recommends using Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when possible and turning off Bluetooth or location when they are not needed. Apply that selectively while gaming: an online game needs a network connection, a Bluetooth controller or headset needs Bluetooth, and some games require location. Turning off a required connection can interrupt play or disconnect an accessory.

Leave background battery management enabled
On Pixel phones, Google recommends leaving Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization on. These features manage background activity; they are not a direct way to reduce the foreground graphics workload of the game you are playing. Adaptive Battery may limit background app activity and may reduce performance or delay notifications. Menu paths and behavior can differ on other manufacturers’ phones.
Manage heat during play
High CPU and GPU use generates heat. Android Developers explains that as a device heats up, its power efficiency can fall and thermal throttling can affect game performance. Google also advises keeping the phone cool because heat can increase battery drain.
