To make a MacBook Air last longer on its current charge, reduce what it has to power: use Low Power Mode when its performance tradeoff suits your work, lower screen brightness, close apps you do not need, disconnect idle accessories, and let the display sleep sooner. If runtime is still poor, check Battery settings and recent usage before assuming the battery needs replacement. These steps reduce energy use; battery-health features such as Optimized Battery Charging have a different purpose and do not promise more hours from today’s charge.
Start with the settings that can extend today’s charge
On current macOS versions, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. The available controls depend on the MacBook Air model and macOS version, so a setting described here may be absent or named differently on your Mac. Apple Support’s Change Battery settings on a Mac laptop guide describes the controls and usage information available on supported Macs.

For a quick first pass, try Low Power Mode, reduce brightness to a comfortable level, and check whether you have unnecessary apps or accessories running. These are reversible changes: if a setting slows a demanding task or the screen becomes too dim, adjust it to suit what you are doing.
It helps to separate two goals. Runtime means how long the Mac operates before it needs another charge; the suggestions in the first part of this guide aim to reduce energy use during that time. Battery lifespan means how the battery’s ability to hold charge changes as it ages; optimized charging and charge limits address that longer-term concern. A setting that helps preserve battery health may deliberately leave you with less than a full charge for a particular outing.

Choose Low Power Mode for the workload
In System Settings > Battery, select Low Power Mode or the relevant Energy Mode control under the battery-powered setting, if your Mac shows one. Apple describes Low Power Mode as reducing energy use to increase battery life. It is most useful when you are away from a power source and the work you need to do does not require your usual performance.
Try it while doing your normal work and decide whether the performance tradeoff is acceptable. A task that feels slower in this mode may be better done with the normal setting when power is available. Apple does not give a generally applicable number of extra hours for Low Power Mode on MacBook Air, so the gain depends on the particular Mac and workload.
Power Mode controls and their navigation vary by Mac and operating-system version. Apple’s About Power Modes on your Mac guidance documents different paths for macOS Ventura or later and macOS Monterey or earlier. Follow the options shown on your own Mac rather than expecting every model to expose the same control. If you cannot find Low Power Mode, that does not by itself mean something is wrong: model support and macOS version affect which choices appear.
Think of Low Power Mode as a choice to make for a specific situation, not a required setting for every user. If you are writing, reading, or doing another task that feels responsive enough, the lower energy use may be worthwhile. If a task depends on the Mac responding at its usual performance, turn the mode off when convenient or connect to power. There is no need to trade away responsiveness when you do not need to stretch the charge.
Lower brightness and shorten idle screen time
The display is one of the things your Mac must power continuously while you use it. Lower brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable, especially in a dim room. If Battery settings offer an option to dim the display while on battery power, you can enable it as well.
To stop the screen staying on when you walk away, open Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen and set the display to turn off sooner when inactive. The exact available intervals can differ. For a longer break, put the Mac to sleep rather than leaving it awake with the display on.
These are small, easy-to-reverse changes, so choose settings that still let you work comfortably. A screen that is too dim can be frustrating, while a display left on during repeated breaks uses power without helping with the task. You do not need to switch the screen off while actively reading or writing; the useful adjustment is avoiding unnecessary time at high brightness or with the display idle.

Reduce avoidable work and accessory use
Close apps you are not using
Close apps that are doing work you no longer need. Apple includes closing apps among its MacBook Air battery recommendations. This is a practical way to reduce avoidable demand, not a guarantee that force-quitting every open app will improve battery life. Keep apps you are actively using open, and avoid interrupting work just to make the Dock look empty.
Focus on work that is no longer needed rather than counting open windows. If you have finished using an app, closing it is a reasonable step; if it is part of the task in front of you, there is no reason to close it merely because the Mac is on battery. A different workload can use more energy than your usual routine, so remember what you were doing when you compare one day’s runtime with another.
Disconnect idle peripherals
Unplug external accessories you are not using, such as connected devices or storage. Apple’s Charge the MacBook Air battery guidance recommends disconnecting unused peripherals. If an accessory is necessary for your current task, keep it connected; the useful change is removing idle power demand, not disconnecting everything indiscriminately.
For example, if you have finished transferring files to an external storage device, disconnect it if you no longer need it. Before removing any storage, follow the safe-ejection steps for that device and make sure transfers are complete. The same principle applies to other accessories: there is no benefit in unplugging something you need, but leaving an unused peripheral attached can be avoidable energy use.
Use Battery history to find what changed
Before changing every setting or arranging a repair, check whether your recent use explains the shorter runtime. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and review the battery level, screen-on usage, and energy usage history shown there. Apple describes views covering the last 24 hours and the last 10 days, though the sections available can vary by Mac.
- Look for a change in screen use. Compare screen-on history with your usual routine. Longer periods with the display active can explain a shorter charge even if the battery is healthy.
- Look for a change in workload. Consider whether you recently spent more time in an app or task that keeps the Mac working. A demanding day can use more power than a lighter one.
- Try one reversible adjustment at a time. Use Low Power Mode, reduce brightness, or close unneeded work, then observe the result during a similar kind of use. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to see whether it helped.
- Check battery condition separately. If the history does not explain the change, look at Battery Health or Battery Condition and Maximum Capacity where those are shown. Usage history and battery health answer different questions: one helps explain recent demand, while the other reports battery condition.
History is useful context, not a diagnosis. A change in workload or screen time can explain a change in runtime, but short runtime alone cannot establish that a particular app or component is faulty.
Make comparisons under roughly similar conditions. A day with more screen-on time, different tasks, or accessories attached is not a clean comparison with a lighter day. The 24-hour view can help you inspect what happened recently, while the 10-day view can put that day in the context of a broader pattern. Treat the history as a way to ask better questions—such as whether the screen was active longer—not as a promise that one chart will identify a failing part.

If you change several things simultaneously, you may get a better result but have a harder time knowing which change mattered. For a simple check, start with a similar task and similar screen brightness, then try one adjustment such as Low Power Mode. On another comparable session, adjust display brightness or remove an accessory you do not need. Everyday use will not be identical, so do not overinterpret a single test, but a careful comparison can help distinguish a routine change from an ongoing problem.

Understand runtime settings versus battery-health features
Some Battery settings are intended to help the Mac last longer between charges; others are intended to slow battery aging. They solve different problems:
| Control or feature | What it is for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Low Power Mode | Reducing energy use during operation | May help the Mac run longer on a charge; choose it in light of the task’s performance needs. |
| Optimized Battery Charging | Reducing time spent fully charged as part of battery-aging management | May delay charging past 80% when the Mac expects to remain plugged in, then aim to finish charging before you unplug it. |
| Charge Limit, where available | Limiting charging as a battery-longevity measure | The Mac may have less than a full charge available for a particular outing. |
| Battery health management on supported Apple silicon laptops | Slowing chemical aging in response to temperature history and charging patterns | May temporarily reduce the battery’s maximum charge. |
Optimized Battery Charging learns your charging routine. If you often leave the Mac connected to power, it may wait to charge beyond 80% and then aim to complete charging before you need to unplug. This feature is about long-term battery health, not a way to increase the hours available from the charge you already have.
Battery health management on Apple silicon laptops monitors temperature history and charging patterns and may temporarily lower maximum charge to slow chemical aging. That behavior can mean less available charge at a particular moment, even though the feature is intended to help preserve the battery over time.
Apple says in its About battery health management in Mac laptops with Apple silicon support guidance that a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. That is a design statement, not a guarantee about an individual MacBook Air’s capacity or how long it will last in any specific workload. Battery capacity declines as a battery chemically ages, but one figure should be interpreted alongside the reported condition and your experience in use.
If you regularly keep your Mac connected to power, optimized charging may make the charging pattern look different from a simple “always fill to 100% as soon as possible” routine. If you need to leave soon, though, the immediate need for charge can matter more than the longevity-oriented routine. The setting’s purpose is to manage aging over time; it is not a reason to assume the Mac has a charging fault.
When a MacBook Air stops charging before 100%
A pause below 100% is not automatically a fault. Optimized Battery Charging can delay charging past 80%; a Charge Limit can prevent a full charge; and battery health management can pause charging temporarily. Check which charging feature is active before treating the behavior as a failure.

If you need a full charge sooner, the Battery status menu may offer Charge to Full Now. Availability depends on the Mac and its current charging state. Selecting it is useful before an outing when you need the charge available now, even if your usual charging routine is managed for battery longevity. Apple’s If your Mac battery won’t charge completely guidance explains why a pause can be expected and describes the full-charge option where available.
Also distinguish a planned pause from the separate question of how long the battery lasts after unplugging. A Mac that has stopped charging at a limit may have less charge available for that trip, but the setting is not intended to extend runtime from the charge level it has already reached. If a full charge is important, check the active setting and available status-menu action rather than repeatedly unplugging and reconnecting the charger.

A compatible power adapter can replenish charge when you have access to an outlet, but it does not extend runtime on one charge. Apple’s MacBook Air charging guidance identifies a 30W USB-C Power Adapter as a charging accessory. That reference is not enough to assume every 30W adapter is appropriate for every Air: confirm the required wattage and connector for your exact model before buying or borrowing an adapter.
If you are choosing an adapter for a travel setup or replacing a missing one, compare compatibility with your MacBook Air model, connector, and required charging wattage. Do not buy an accessory expecting it to make the built-in battery last longer between charges. For that goal, focus on power use; an adapter is useful when you can recharge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to seek service
Check Battery Health or Battery Condition and Maximum Capacity in Battery settings where those details are available. If macOS reports that service is recommended, follow Apple’s service guidance for your Mac. Also consider service if capacity and runtime have materially declined and the shorter runtime persists after you have accounted for changes in screen time and workload.
Do not diagnose a failing battery from one short session, one charging pause, or a single capacity figure alone. Battery history can help separate increased energy use from a battery-condition concern; the status shown by macOS and Apple’s guidance for your model are the appropriate next points of reference. Availability and labels for health information can differ, so use the controls shown on your Mac rather than assuming every model presents the same screen.
A sensible order is to review the recent usage pattern, make the easy reversible changes, and then check the battery condition. If the evidence points to a persistent capacity or runtime issue, or macOS recommends service, consult Apple’s service guidance rather than relying on a symptom-based guess. There is no generally applicable runtime threshold in Apple’s guidance that can diagnose every MacBook Air: actual time on a charge depends on the model, condition, screen use, accessories, and work performed.

A practical routine when you need more time away from power
- Before leaving, charge the Mac as needed; if optimized charging has paused below full and you need the extra charge now, check whether Charge to Full Now is available.
- Once unplugged, enable Low Power Mode if it suits the work you will be doing.
- Set screen brightness to a comfortable level rather than maximum, and let the display turn off sooner when idle.
- Close work you no longer need and unplug accessories that are not in use.
- If runtime remains unexpectedly short, compare Battery usage history with Battery Health or Battery Condition before deciding whether service is appropriate.
There is no universal setting that adds a fixed number of hours to every MacBook Air. How much these changes help depends on the Mac, its condition, the display use, connected accessories, and the work being done. Start with the changes that fit your situation, then use the Battery settings history and health information to decide what to try next.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the quickest way to improve MacBook Air battery life?
When you are away from power, try Low Power Mode if its performance tradeoff suits your work, lower brightness to a comfortable level, close apps doing work you no longer need, and disconnect peripherals you are not using. Let the display turn off sooner when idle. The effect varies with your Mac and workload; Apple does not provide a universal extra-hours figure for these changes.
Does Low Power Mode make a MacBook Air slower?
Low Power Mode reduces energy use, so it can involve a performance tradeoff. Try it during the kind of work you need to do and decide whether the response is acceptable. If a demanding task feels slower, use the normal setting when performance matters or power is available.

Why does my MacBook Air stop charging at 80% or before 100%?
Optimized Battery Charging may delay charging past 80% when your Mac expects to remain plugged in; a Charge Limit may cap charging; and battery health management may temporarily pause charging. These behaviors are not automatically faults. If you need a full charge sooner, the Battery status menu may offer Charge to Full Now.
Does Optimized Battery Charging give me more time on the current charge?
No. Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit are battery-aging management features, not settings for increasing runtime from the charge you already have. Low Power Mode, lower brightness, closing unneeded work, and disconnecting idle accessories target energy use during operation.
How can I tell whether poor runtime is caused by use or battery wear?
Review Battery settings’ recent energy and screen-on history, including the available 24-hour and 10-day views, and compare it with your usual screen time and workload. Then check Battery Health or Battery Condition and Maximum Capacity where shown. History provides context rather than a diagnosis; if service is recommended or the decline persists, follow Apple’s service guidance for your model.
Will a 30W USB-C adapter make my MacBook Air battery last longer?
An adapter can replenish charge when you have access to power; it does not extend runtime on a single charge. Apple identifies a 30W USB-C Power Adapter as a charging accessory, but verify the required wattage and connector for your exact MacBook Air model before choosing one.
