The fastest reliable way to improve at Connections is to stop submitting the first plausible four words. Read all 16 tiles, state a rule that can be tested, demand exactly four members, and reject the tempting fifth before you commit. Solve the clearest group first, then rebuild your hypotheses from the reduced board. This routine cuts avoidable errors while teaching you to recognize phrases, alternate meanings, proper names and the deliberately deceptive overlaps that make the puzzle hard.
What Connections is testing
The New York Times describes Connections as a word game in which you find themes between words. Each daily board has 16 tiles. Your job is to divide them into four groups of four, colored by difficulty: Yellow is intended to be easiest, followed by Green, Blue and Purple, the trickiest tier. The editors curate words and categories with the Oxford Dictionary.

There is exactly one intended solution, but the board is designed so that a tile can appear to fit more than one category. A correct-looking trio is therefore not evidence that a fourth word belongs. Every submission should survive a rule test against the rest of the board.

A disciplined solving workflow
1. Inventory every tile before choosing a group
Read the entire board once without tapping a guess. Make a quick mental inventory of:
- Literal subjects, such as foods, jobs, animals or places.
- Words that could follow or precede the same word in a compound or familiar expression.
- Abbreviations, initials, symbols and words with an alternate definition.
- Names of people, characters, titles, brands, locations or other proper-name sets.
- Words whose grammatical role could change between noun, verb or adjective.
Mark obvious relationships as provisional only. A tile that looks like a member of an easy category may be a deliberate decoy for a phrase or name-based group.
2. Turn a hunch into a testable rule
“These four feel related” is too weak. State the connection in a form that could prove you wrong: “These four can follow the word night,” “These four are abbreviations for months,” or “These four are names in the same fictional set.” A precise rule exposes gaps and makes it easier to compare two competing groups.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Require four clean members—and disqualify the fifth
Before submitting, explain why all four words fit the same rule and identify the strongest fifth candidate. If a fifth tile fits as naturally as one of your four, keep the group provisional. The safest category has four tight members and an explicit reason the near-match is excluded—different part of speech, a different spelling, an unrelated sense or a broader-than-intended definition.
4. Take the clearest category first
Once a group passes the four-member test, submit it. Removing four confirmed tiles reduces the search space from 16 words to 12, then 8 and finally 4. That reduction is not merely psychological: fewer remaining combinations mean fewer ways for a red herring to compete with the intended rule.
5. Re-scan the leftovers after every solve
Do not carry your old categories forward unchanged. A word that seemed to be an extra member may become the key to a phrase once a competing tile disappears. Recheck literal meanings, word order, spelling, sound and grammar after each successful group.
6. Escalate from literal links to wordplay
If no literal category has four clean members, broaden the type of connection you are testing. Look for:
- Common prefixes, suffixes and compounds.
- Words that complete the same expression or title.
- Homophones or alternate pronunciations.
- Alternate dictionary definitions.
- Proper names, initials and members of a named set.
- Spelling patterns or transformations.
Do not assume the hardest color uses one specific trick. Purple is a difficulty signal, not an official definition of a particular mechanism.

7. Treat guesses as information-costly
A speculative submission can consume one of your limited mistakes without teaching you much. Spend that cost only when one candidate has a stronger four-word explanation than its rivals. If two hypotheses are close, continue sorting instead of guessing; the next confirmed group often resolves the tie for free.
A two-pass method for difficult boards
When the first scan produces several attractive trios, separate recognition from verification. During pass one, jot down every possible relationship without ranking it: a shared prefix, a set of names, a second dictionary sense or a phrase completion. During pass two, rank each idea by four tests:
- Coverage: does the rule explain four tiles, not merely three?
- Exactness: do spelling, pronunciation and grammatical form match?
- Exclusion: can you state why the strongest fifth tile does not belong?
- Partition: does the rule leave the other tiles available for three coherent groups?
This prevents a familiar topic from winning simply because it came to mind first. A category that explains four tiles but strands several leftovers is weaker than one that makes the whole 16-word board more orderly.
Use a confidence label if you solve on paper or in your head: “locked” for a rule with four exact members and no serious fifth, “probable” for a strong but unverified set, and “speculative” for a trio or loose association. Submit locked groups first. Reclassify probable groups whenever a confirmed solve changes the board.
Trap patterns that cause most misses
The tempting fifth word
Four tiles may appear to share a broad topic while a fifth fits nearly as well. Narrow the rule until it selects exactly four. For example, “things associated with water” is not a usable category; a rule such as “words that precede fall in a common phrase” is.
Literal meaning versus phrase construction
A tile can belong because of what it means, because it forms a compound with another word, or because it completes a familiar expression. When a literal group has only three secure members, test whether the apparent fourth is actually serving a phrase-based category elsewhere.
Part-of-speech drift
Nouns, verbs and adjectives can look interchangeable in a loose theme. Check the grammatical form required by the rule. A word may qualify as a verb but not as a noun, or only in a particular inflection. That distinction often separates the intended four from a red herring.

Proper-name blindness
Ordinary-looking words can be titles, surnames, characters, places or entries in a named set. If a board resists ordinary categories, ask whether several tiles become meaningful when capitalized or treated as names. Conversely, do not force a name-based explanation when the same words have a cleaner everyday rule.

Purple tunnel vision
Because Purple is the hardest tier, solvers sometimes search for an elaborate trick too early. Start with the strongest ordinary categories, then test wordplay on the residue. The official rules do not assign one fixed mechanism to Purple, so keep several possibilities open.
How to find the Purple category without guessing blindly
- Lock the high-confidence groups. A secure Yellow or Green group removes noise and may reveal the remaining structure.
- List the leftover senses. For each tile, note a second definition, a possible prefix or suffix, a homophone and any proper-name reading.
- Test shared frames. Try placing the words before or after one common word, or completing the same title or expression.
- Check exactness. Confirm spelling, pronunciation and grammatical form for every member; near-synonyms are not enough.
- Compare rival explanations. Prefer the rule that accounts for all four with the fewest exceptions and leaves no equally strong fifth word.
The goal is not to predict what color the editors assigned. It is to identify the only rule that partitions the remaining four words cleanly.
What the performance evidence says about mistakes and retries
A COLING 2025 study evaluated 100 NYT-CONNECTIONS puzzles under different attempt and hint conditions. Its results are useful for understanding the value of checking, but they are not a universal forecast for an individual player: the human portion used three evaluators, and the experimental setup allowed up to four retries.
| Solver and condition | Accuracy reported | What the condition means |
|---|---|---|
| Humans, one try | 39.33% | One submission with no opportunity to recover. |
| Humans, multiple attempts, no hints | 56.0% | Up to four retries without contextual assistance. |
| Humans, multiple attempts, contextual hints | 60.67% | Retries plus contextual feedback. |
| GPT-4, one try | 4.0% | Single-attempt condition. |
| GPT-4, multiple attempts, no hints | 35.5% | Retries without hints. |
| GPT-4, multiple attempts, contextual hints | 32.5% | Retries with contextual hints in that study. |
The practical lesson is not that you should chase a particular percentage. It is that an additional considered attempt and useful feedback can materially change outcomes. In the live game, use retries to test a better-supported hypothesis, not to cycle through random combinations.
Use Connections Bot as a training log
Eligible subscribers can use Connections Bot after a puzzle to review more than whether the final answer was right. The tool can report puzzle difficulty, a skill score, the order in which categories were discovered, common mistakes and a guess-by-guess breakdown. Treat those records as targeted practice:
- If your first guess is often wrong because of a fifth-word trap, pause longer at the disqualification step.
- If you solve literal groups but miss phrase groups, spend more practice time on shared prefixes, suffixes and compounds.
- If your category order consistently leaves Purple until the end, review whether you are overlooking proper names or alternate definitions.
- If you use many guesses despite eventually solving, measure the average mistakes used rather than celebrating only the completion.
The daily puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s timezone. It can be played on the New York Times website, in the Games app and in the News app. An optional subscriber archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, allowing deliberate practice on older boards; access and subscriber features can change, so check the current in-app or help-page labels.
A repeatable routine for a timed solve
- First pass: read all 16 tiles and label possible literal, phrase, name and wordplay roles.
- Candidate formation: write or say a specific rule for every promising set of three or four.
- Conflict check: search the remaining tiles for a fifth member and explain why it is excluded.
- Confidence ranking: sort candidates by rule precision, not by how familiar the topic feels.
- First submission: choose the highest-confidence group, normally the clearest Yellow or Green set.
- Reset: discard assumptions tied to removed tiles and inventory the 12-word board again.
- Wordplay pass: test compounds, expressions, alternate senses, names and sound-based links on the residue.
- Final verification: before the last submission, ensure the four remaining tiles share one exact rule; there should be no unresolved fifth candidate.
Illustrative example of the four-member test
Imagine a board containing the words board, room, walk and house, plus a fifth word that also commonly follows news. A vague category such as “things in a building” would be unsafe because it does not define membership. A stronger hypothesis might be “words that can follow news,” but you would still need to verify the exact phrase for each tile and explain why the fifth candidate is excluded. If the fifth fits equally well, none of the four is ready to submit. This example is a method demonstration, not a claim about a particular daily puzzle.

| Measure | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| No-mistake accuracy | How often do you solve without an incorrect submission? | Shows whether your initial hypotheses are better calibrated. |
| Average mistakes | How many wrong guesses do you spend on a typical board? | Reveals the cost of impulsive submissions even when you eventually finish. |
| Speed | How long does a solve take under comparable conditions? | Measures efficiency after accuracy is stable. |
| Rule explanation | Can you state why all four words belong? | Separates a reproducible insight from a lucky pattern match. |
| Red-herring resistance | Can the method handle alternate meanings and overlapping candidates? | Tests the central skill the puzzle is designed to demand. |
These dimensions align with the kinds of review surfaced by Connections Bot: difficulty, skill score, category discovery order, common mistakes and the history of each guess. Keep a simple record for a week or two, then change one habit at a time so you can see what actually helps.

How many mistakes can I make?
The live board uses a limited mistake allowance, so the exact number of remaining guesses is visible in the game interface. Because that allowance can end before a category is confirmed, treat every speculative submission as a real cost and preserve it for a clearly superior hypothesis.
Should I always solve Yellow first?
No. Solve the clearest group, which is often Yellow or Green but can occasionally be another color. Difficulty labels describe the editors’ intended challenge; they do not override the evidence on your particular board.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is there a guaranteed way to solve Purple?
No. Purple has no single officially defined trick. The dependable approach is to remove secure groups, enumerate alternate senses and wordplay forms, and select the exact four-word rule that survives the fifth-word check.
Does practicing old puzzles help?
It can, especially when you review why a guess failed rather than memorizing answers. The subscriber archive, where available, extends back to June 12, 2023; use older boards to practice one target skill at a time and record your mistakes.
Is speed more important than accuracy?
Not at first. Build no-mistake accuracy and clear rule explanations before trying to shorten your solving time. Once your guesses are well calibrated, compare speed under similar conditions so a rushed solve does not hide a higher error rate.
What should I do after an incorrect guess?
Do not merely reshuffle the same four tiles. Record which assumption failed—topic, phrase, spelling, grammar or name recognition—then remove that assumption and re-inventory the remaining board. The feedback is useful only when it changes your next hypothesis.

A hint is most valuable when you can explain how it corrected your category model.
Best Value
Bottom line
Improvement comes from disciplined uncertainty: inventory the whole board, express each category as a precise rule, reject any set with an equally strong fifth word, and solve the highest-confidence group before rethinking the leftovers. Use retries and Connections Bot feedback to identify your recurring trap—phrase confusion, grammar, names or Purple overthinking—and practice that weakness directly. This will not promise a perfect solve rate, but it turns each board into a repeatable reasoning exercise instead of a sequence of guesses.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get better at NYT Connections?
Read all 16 tiles first, turn hunches into exact rules, verify four members while rejecting a tempting fifth, and re-scan the board after every confirmed group.
What is the best strategy for Connections?
Solve the clearest category rather than automatically choosing Yellow, then use the reduced board to test phrases, alternate definitions, names and wordplay.
Recommended Free Tools
How can I avoid traps and red herrings?
Keep a group provisional until you can explain why every member fits and why the strongest fifth candidate does not. Check grammar, spelling and alternate meanings.
How do I find the Purple category?
After locking stronger groups, list second definitions, shared prefixes or suffixes, homophones, proper names and phrase completions. Choose the exact rule that partitions the final four words.
How many mistakes can I make?
The game displays the remaining mistake allowance. Because it is limited, spend guesses only on a clearly stronger hypothesis instead of random combinations.
Does Connections Bot show why I missed?
Eligible subscribers can review difficulty, skill score, category discovery order, common mistakes and a guess-by-guess breakdown, which can reveal the habit causing repeated errors.
The Bottom Line
Read the whole board, test exact four-word rules, reject tempting fifth members, and learn from each miss. That disciplined process improves accuracy without promising a perfect solve rate.
