The important distinction is scope. A library import adds a reusable design to one editing context; a Website Templates import can change templates, content, and global site settings. Back up the site first, use only files you trust, and choose the route that matches what you intend to change.

Choose the right Elementor import route
Elementor has two import workflows. Use the Template Library when you have one page, block, or saved template. Use Website Templates when the file represents a complete site kit and you need to decide whether to import headers, footers, pages, posts, images, global styles, or all of them.

Do not upload a full kit through the ordinary page-library dialog expecting it to behave like a single section. Conversely, importing a single JSON page does not recreate a site’s global fonts, theme style, or content database.

Prepare WordPress before importing
Back up first
Elementor’s import/export guidance says, “We recommend backing up your site before importing a file.” Make a restorable WordPress backup before a kit import, particularly when the import includes content or Site Settings. Keep the backup until you have checked the imported pages and confirmed that the existing site still behaves as expected. Source: Elementor import and export website templates.
Identify the file and its intended scope
- A single template normally arrives as a JSON file. The library workflow also accepts a ZIP containing multiple JSON files.
- A complete Elementor kit is imported as a ZIP through Website Templates or the documented WP-CLI kit command.
- Decide whether you need only a design template or also the kit’s content and global settings. This choice determines which workflow and selections you should use.
Check plugins and trust the source
The Website Templates workflow asks you to select plugins before choosing the kit parts. Select the plugins required by the kit, but do not install software merely because a file requests it unless you know why it is needed and trust its source. Treat SVG warnings carefully: enable SVG imports only for exports you created or sources you trust. Elementor includes that safety warning in its import/export documentation.

Elementor documents the Website Templates library as best suited to a clean WordPress site where possible. On an established site, importing templates, content, and Site Settings can overwrite or compete with existing design choices. If you cannot use a clean site, import only the components you actually need and keep your backup available.
Check upload and security limits
Large ZIP files can be rejected by hosting upload limits or server security rules. Have the ZIP route available when cloud or kit handling is required, and check the limits imposed by your WordPress host before starting a large import. If a preview or import request never reaches Elementor, security software may be blocking WordPress’s admin-ajax.php endpoint.
Import one Elementor template from the editor
This is the normal method for a page layout, section, block, or saved template that you want to place in a specific editing session.
- Open the destination. In WordPress, open the page you want to change and launch the Elementor Editor.
- Open the Template Library. Click the folder or template-library icon on the Elementor canvas.
- Switch to My Templates. This area contains your saved designs and the controls for adding an exported file.
- Start an upload. Click the import icon.
- Select the file. In the file picker, click Select File and choose the exported
.jsonor.zipfile. - Insert the result. When the template appears in the library, click Insert. The layout is then added to the page you opened in step one.

The equivalent upload controls in the library
Depending on the Elementor screen you reach, the labels may appear as the general Template Library upload sequence rather than the editor’s My Templates wording. Open the library, select Templates, click the upload icon, choose the file, confirm the upload, and click Insert. The official library article describes that sequence at Elementor Template Library.
What happens after insertion
Insertion places the imported design in the current Elementor editing context. It does not, by itself, import a complete site’s posts, images, headers, footers, global fonts, theme style, or other kit-level settings. Those belong to the Website Templates workflow described below.
Import a complete Elementor website kit from WP Admin
Use this route for a full website template or kit. It gives you a deliberate choice over plugins and over three different classes of data.
- Back up the site. Do this before opening the import flow.
- Open Website Templates. In WP Admin, go to Elementor > Editor > Home > Tools > Website Templates.
- Click Import. Elementor presents the available import sources.
- Choose the source. Select Open the Library for a cloud template, or Import a zip file for a local ZIP.
- Select plugins. Choose the plugins required by the kit, then click Next.
- Choose the data categories. Select the exact parts you want to import: Templates, Content, Site Settings, or a combination.
- Complete the import and review the site. Check the pages, templates, and global appearance before treating the migration as finished.
Understand the three import categories

Select all three categories when your goal is to recreate the entire site. Select only the necessary categories when you are adding a design to an existing WordPress installation and do not want to replace its content or global settings. Apply a kit from the Website Templates library
Elementor also documents a library-first path for kits: go to WP Admin > Templates > Website Templates, preview a kit, click Apply, and choose Customize or Apply All. Use Customize when you want to select parts; use Apply All when the kit is intended to establish the complete site. The same guidance recommends a clean WordPress site where possible. Customize versus Apply All
- Customize: review the kit and apply only the components that fit the existing site.
- Apply All: use when you intentionally want the kit’s complete set of templates, content, and global design settings.
These buttons affect the breadth of the change, not the safety requirement. Back up before either action, and do not enable SVG imports unless the files are yours or from a source you trust.

Import an Elementor kit with WP-CLI
For repeatable deployments or a server-based workflow, Elementor Developers documents this command:
wp elementor kit import <file-path> [--include] [--overrideConditions] [--sourceType]
A complete example is:
wp elementor kit import path/to/elementor-kit.zip
The --include values are content, templates, and site-settings. If you omit --include, the command imports all data types. Use an inclusion value when automation must deliberately limit the scope, such as importing templates without the kit’s content. The documented command and option names are at Elementor Developers: kit import.
Library files and ZIP contents in command-line workflows
Elementor’s library-import documentation distinguishes a single template JSON file from a ZIP containing multiple JSON files. That distinction matters when preparing an automated import: use the library-import method for exported library templates, and the kit-import command for a complete Elementor kit. JSON or ZIP: which file should you use?
Use JSON for one exported template
Choose JSON when the export represents one page, section, block, or saved template and you are inserting it through the Template Library. If the upload reports an invalid template or invalid JSON, the file is not valid for that import and must be replaced or re-exported.
Use ZIP for multiple library templates or a complete kit
The library can accept a ZIP containing multiple JSON files. Website Templates also uses a ZIP for a complete kit, including the kit’s templates, content, and Site Settings choices. A ZIP is especially useful when the package is too large or too broad for a single-template upload, but it also makes it more important to verify the package’s source and your server’s upload limits.

Troubleshoot a template that will not import
“Invalid template” or invalid JSON
For a JSON upload, confirm that the file is valid JSON and that it is an Elementor template export rather than an unrelated ZIP, HTML file, or damaged download. Elementor lists an invalid template or JSON as a common error. Obtain a fresh export and retry the individual-template workflow. Do not rename an arbitrary file to .json; the extension does not convert its contents.
The kit preview or import does not load
Security software, including ModSecurity configurations, can block requests to WordPress’s admin-ajax.php. Elementor identifies that blocking as a documented cause of kit-library preview or import failures. Ask the host or administrator to check the security rule and server logs, then retry after the request is allowed.
The wrong parts of the site changed
Review the category choices. Selecting Site Settings changes global fonts, theme style, layout, lightbox, and background settings; selecting Content brings in pages, posts, custom post types, text, and images; selecting Templates brings in headers, footers, and saved site templates. Restore the backup if the result is not the intended combination, then repeat with only the required categories.
The kit asks for plugins
Return to the plugin-selection step and select the plugins required by the kit before clicking Next. If you do not recognize a requested plugin, stop and verify the kit source instead of installing it blindly.
SVG warnings appear
SVG files can contain active content. Enable SVG imports only when you created the export or trust its source, as Elementor cautions in its import/export documentation. If you cannot verify the source, leave SVG importing disabled and replace those assets with trusted files.
A large ZIP will not upload
Check the host’s upload and request-size limits and review security rules that may reject the request. The ZIP route remains the documented alternative for cloud or kit handling, but a server limit still has to permit the file. If the dashboard cannot handle the package, use a controlled WP-CLI workflow with the kit-import command and a verified backup.
Verify the result after importing
Verification is especially important when the import included more than one category. Work through this checklist before deleting the backup:
- Open the imported page or pages in Elementor and confirm the expected layout is present.
- Check headers, footers, and saved templates if you selected Templates.
- Check pages, posts, custom post types, text, and images if you selected Content.
- Review global fonts, theme style, layout, lightbox, and background settings if you selected Site Settings.
- Confirm that the required plugins are active and that no unexpected plugin was installed.
- Review SVG assets and remove or replace any file whose source you cannot verify.
- Test the public pages and the WordPress editor before treating the import as complete.
A practical decision guide
Importing one landing page
Open the target page in Elementor, use My Templates, upload the JSON or ZIP, and click Insert. Do not use a full kit import unless you also need site-wide settings or content.

Use the Template Library when the export is a saved template. If the package is part of a complete kit, use Website Templates and select Templates; add Site Settings or Content only when those changes are intentional.
Recreating an entire demonstration site
Back up first, use Website Templates, select the required plugins, and choose Templates, Content, and Site Settings together. Elementor recommends a clean WordPress site where possible for this kind of kit installation.
Deploying the same kit repeatedly
Use the documented WP-CLI kit-import command. Leave --include out for all data types, or specify content, templates, or site-settings to make the deployment narrower and repeatable.
