A 500 response immediately after editing .htaccess usually means Apache rejected the file while parsing it. Temporarily remove or comment out the new mod_expires lines, read the Apache error log for the file path and line number, then check module availability, override permissions, and directive syntax in that order. Once a minimal block loads successfully, add additional rules one at a time and verify the response headers.

What this particular 500 error means
When the site worked until a new mod_expires block was saved, the failure is normally a configuration error rather than an application exception. Apache reads .htaccess during request processing; an unknown directive, a directive forbidden in that directory, or malformed syntax can make Apache return HTTP 500 before it serves the requested page.

The decisive evidence is in Apache’s error log. A useful entry normally includes the affected .htaccess path, a line number, and wording such as Invalid command, directive not allowed here, or syntax error. Those messages point to different repairs, so avoid changing several unrelated settings before reading the log.
Recover the site before troubleshooting
- Open the affected
.htaccessfile through your normal file manager, deployment process, or host control panel. - Comment out the newly added expiration block by placing
#at the beginning of each line, or restore the last known-good version of the file. - Save the file and request the site again. If the 500 response disappears, the new block is confirmed as the trigger.
- Keep a copy of the failing block and the exact error-log entry. The line number and message are more useful than a generic browser error page.
Do not leave a partially edited file in production while experimenting. A syntactically valid file that omits one desired cache rule is safer than a file that prevents every request from being served.

Read the error log first
Apache’s troubleshooting guidance treats the error log as the first diagnostic step for server errors. Use the logging view provided by your host or server administrator and locate the entry generated at the moment of the 500 response.

If the log names a different line from the one you expected, inspect the preceding line as well. An unmatched quote or other malformed argument can cause Apache to report the point where parsing finally became impossible rather than the point where the mistake began.
Confirm that mod_expires is available
ExpiresActive, ExpiresDefault, and ExpiresByType are provided by Apache’s mod_expires module. Some older Apache builds did not compile that module in by default, and hosting plans may also leave it disabled. If Apache reports an invalid command for one of these directives, verify the module through the server’s module listing or the hosting control panel before changing the rule.
When you do not administer the server, ask the host to confirm that mod_expires is loaded and permitted for the account. A syntactically perfect block still fails if the provider does not make the module available. Do not substitute a directive from another module merely because its name looks similar; first establish which module your server supports.
Check the directory’s AllowOverride policy
Apache only applies directives from .htaccess when the parent server configuration allows the required override classes for that directory. For the expiration directives discussed here, Apache’s .htaccess guidance specifies that both AllowOverride Options and AllowOverride FileInfo must be in effect for the directives to have any effect.

A host can therefore produce two different outcomes when overrides are restricted: it may reject a directive with a “not allowed here” error, or it may prevent the rule from having an effect, depending on the server configuration and directive context. The error log tells you which outcome you have.

- That the directory containing the file is covered by the intended
AllowOverridepolicy. - That both the
OptionsandFileInfooverride classes are enabled where the expiration rules are defined. - That the host has not disabled
.htaccessprocessing for performance or security reasons. - That the module is enabled in the same server instance handling the request.
If you cannot change the virtual-host configuration, the administrator may need to place the equivalent directives in the main Apache configuration instead of allowing them in .htaccess. Do not keep editing the file to work around a policy that intentionally forbids overrides.
Start with a minimal, known-good block
After module and override checks, replace the experimental rules with the smallest documented configuration that expresses your intent:

Add one directive, save, and test after each change. If the error returns, the last line added is the most likely cause and the preceding working version gives you a clean rollback point.

Validate MIME types and interval syntax
Use a MIME type, not a file extension
The first argument to ExpiresByType is a MIME type such as text/css, not .css and not a filename. The rule matches the response’s declared content type. If a rule is syntactically valid but never affects a response, inspect the response’s Content-Type value and make the rule match that value.
Keep readable expressions quoted
An interval such as access plus 1 month contains spaces. The quoted form keeps it together as one argument and follows Apache’s documented readable syntax. Check for missing or mismatched quotation marks when the log reports a syntax error.
Change one variable at a time
Do not paste a large block copied from a different server configuration and then diagnose all of it at once. Begin with the minimal block, then add a single MIME type or interval. This separates a parser problem from a rule that simply does not match the response you are testing.
Reload and verify the resulting headers
Once the file parses without a 500 response, reload Apache through the normal mechanism provided by your host or deployment environment. Then request a representative HTML, CSS, or JavaScript resource and inspect the response in browser developer tools or with:

curl -I https://www.example.com/path/to/resourceA successful match may add an Expires header and related cache metadata. The exact headers depend on the response and the rest of the server configuration, so check the resource whose MIME type you targeted rather than relying on the homepage alone.

ExpiresActive On by itself does not guarantee that every response receives an expiration header. Apache notes that no header is generated when no matching expiration criteria exist. A response can therefore be valid and uncached by this module without indicating a new configuration failure.
Understand access-based and modification-based expiry
Expiration intervals can be calculated from the time the client accesses the resource or from the file’s modification time. The readable prefixes are A or access for client access time and M or modification for file modification time.
- Access-based expiry: the interval starts when the client receives the response. It works for responses that do not expose a file modification time.
- Modification-based expiry: the interval is calculated from the resource’s last modification time. Apache cannot use this basis when the response has no file modification time.
Choose the basis deliberately. A modification-based rule can align expiry with a file’s deployment timestamp, while access-based expiry provides a predictable lifetime from each request. Neither mode makes content immutable or forces every response to be cached; the directive controls expiration metadata.

Common mistakes that recreate the 500
Assuming a browser cache problem is a parser problem
Clear evidence of a parser failure is an immediate 500 after saving the file, accompanied by an error-log entry. A stale browser asset or an absent Expires header after the page loads is a separate verification issue. Treat those as different branches instead of repeatedly editing syntax.
Enabling only one override class
For these directives, Apache documents both Options and FileInfo as necessary. Enabling one while leaving the other disabled does not satisfy the documented requirement.
Testing only the document root
An .htaccess file applies within its directory scope. Test a resource located under the directory where the file lives, and confirm that another nested file is not overriding or replacing the setting.
Adding every asset type at once
A long copied block makes the failing line difficult to isolate. The minimal block and one-at-a-time additions provide a reliable rollback sequence.
Production checklist
- Keep a known-good copy of
.htaccessbefore editing. - Record the exact error-log path, line number, and message for any 500 response.
- Verify
mod_expiresavailability before changing directive spelling. - Confirm both
AllowOverride OptionsandAllowOverride FileInfoare effective for the directory. - Use quoted, readable interval expressions.
- Give
ExpiresByTypea MIME type, not a filename extension. - Enable the minimal block first, then add rules individually.
- Reload through the host’s normal process after a successful parse.
- Inspect headers on a resource that actually matches the rule.
- Remember that expiration metadata does not make content immutable or guarantee caching.
When to involve the host or server administrator
Escalate when the module listing does not show mod_expires, when the host forbids the required override classes, or when you cannot access the error log. Provide the administrator with the failing .htaccess lines, the timestamp of the request, and the exact log message. That information lets them distinguish a missing module from a policy restriction without guessing.
If the host confirms that .htaccess overrides are intentionally disabled, stop trying alternative spellings in the file. The correct fix is a server-level configuration change or an approved deployment mechanism, not a different cache directive pasted into a prohibited context.
