What Is Griefing in Rust and How to Deal With It

Rust griefing is deliberate disruption beyond normal PvP or raiding. Learn how server rules and Facepunch policies apply, how tool cupboards and Softcore protections work, and how to report harassment effectively.

In Rust, griefing is deliberate disruption or harassment intended to make another player’s game difficult beyond normal PvP, raiding and competition. Tool-cupboard denial, trapping, post-raid sealing and repeated targeted harassment can qualify, but the final call depends on the server’s published rules and the evidence of intent.

What griefing means in Rust

Rust gives players broad freedom to attack bases, steal resources, destroy structures and kill other players. Those actions are core objectives when they serve a raid, defense or ordinary fight. Griefing is different because the purpose shifts from winning a contest or taking resources to deliberately preventing another player from recovering, rebuilding or reasonably participating.

There is no single game mechanic that labels an action as griefing. Administrators usually look at the surrounding circumstances: what happened, how long it continued, whether the same player was singled out repeatedly, and what the server’s rules say. A tactic that is allowed on a no-rules PvP server may be prohibited on a role-play, beginner-friendly or moderated community server.

  • Intent: Was the action connected to a raid or objective, or was it mainly meant to frustrate, harass or exclude someone?
  • Duration: Did the disruption end after the fight, or did it continue after useful loot and tactical advantages were gone?
  • Targeting: Is one player or group being followed and obstructed repeatedly?
  • Rules: Does the server define door camping, trapping, sealing, offline raids or building denial in specific terms?

Use that framework when deciding whether to report an incident. Do not assume that every unpleasant tactic is automatically a rules violation, and do not assume that a raid makes every follow-up action permissible.

How ordinary PvP differs from possible griefing

Situation Why it is usually ordinary play When it may become griefing
Killing an opponent Combat and defending territory are normal Rust objectives. Repeatedly hunting one player after the conflict, especially with threats or obstruction unrelated to a fight, may violate conduct rules.
Raiding a base Breaking defenses and taking loot are expected parts of the game. Actions after the raid that intentionally prevent recovery or continued play can be covered by a server’s anti-grief rules.
Taking or breaking a tool cupboard A raid may require removing the cupboard to gain building control or stop upkeep. Taking control only to deny rebuilding, decay protection or access for an extended period may be treated as tool-cupboard griefing.
Door camping Watching an exit during an active fight can be a tactical choice. Persistent camping that serves no tactical purpose, particularly when combined with threats or repeated targeting, can cross a server’s line.
Building around an opponent Temporary structures can support a raid or defense. Sealing, trapping or obstructing someone after the contest has ended may be prohibited even if the game technically allows it.

This table describes common interpretations, not a universal Rust law. Read the server’s rules before reporting or retaliating; administrators may use definitions that are stricter or more permissive than the examples above.

What Facepunch’s rules prohibit

Facepunch’s Code of Conduct applies to its games and tells players: “Do not grief, harass, stalk, threaten or impersonate other players (or anyone from Facepunch).” The same code says suspected violations can be reported with in-game tools or to Facepunch support, and that violations may result in suspension or a ban.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Facepunch’s Terms of Service prohibit users from hacking, harming, grieving, harassing, threatening, interrupting, interfering with or misusing its services, accounts, network software, services or other users. These are platform-wide conduct requirements; they do not replace the additional rules written by an individual community server.

Facepunch’s Community Server and Hosting Guidelines allow private, unofficial and community servers when they comply with the guidelines. The guidelines expressly prohibit cheating, griefing and hacking, and serious or repeated breaches can lead to browser delisting or other sanctions. Server operators can therefore add specific restrictions, publish reporting procedures and enforce standards that are more detailed than the global wording.

For practical purposes, there are two enforcement paths:

  • Community enforcement: The server owner or moderators handle rule breaches under that server’s rules. Their ticket system, Discord channel or in-game report command is normally the fastest route.
  • Facepunch enforcement: Use the game’s reporting tools or contact Facepunch support for conduct that violates the Code of Conduct or Terms of Service, especially when the issue is not limited to a local rule.

Tool-cupboard griefing explained

Why the tool cupboard matters

A tool cupboard, commonly called a TC, controls two important parts of a base. It stores upkeep resources that prevent connected building blocks from decaying, and it grants building privilege that stops other players from constructing on or close to the protected area. Taking or destroying the TC can therefore affect both the base’s survival and an owner’s ability to rebuild.

Because the mechanic has legitimate raid and defense uses, breaking a TC is not automatically griefing. The context matters. Removing it to gain access, stop an active defense or take over a base is ordinary gameplay on many servers. Removing it and then maintaining control solely to keep the previous owner from playing may be judged differently.

How to reduce the risk before an incident

  • Keep the TC supplied with the resources required by the upkeep panel.
  • Secure access to the cupboard so a visitor cannot casually reach or destroy it.
  • Read the server’s rules for external TCs, building privilege, raid blocks and offline protection; those settings vary by server.
  • Record the base location and the server’s report route somewhere outside the game so you can act if you lose access.

What happens when a stocked TC is destroyed

Facepunch’s Devblog 198 explains that when a cupboard containing resources is destroyed, those resources can purchase up to 24 hours of decay protection for connected building blocks. This is a temporary protection window, not permanent ownership and not a guarantee that every later construction will survive. Blocks added after the cupboard is destroyed do not receive that protection.

The Rust Wiki documents the same mechanic and notes that a locked cupboard is more likely to consume upkeep. Check the upkeep display after rebuilding or replacing a cupboard so that a lock does not create an unexpected resource drain.

Is sealing a base after a raid griefing?

It can be, but there is no universal yes-or-no answer. If sealing is part of an active raid—such as closing a breach while defenders are still fighting—it may be a tactical action. If the attackers have taken what they wanted and then add structures, doors or building blocks specifically to prevent the former owners from escaping, recovering or continuing to play, a community server may classify it as griefing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for the exact wording in the rules. Some servers prohibit sealing entirely, some allow it after a stated delay, and others permit it unless the action is targeted harassment. Capture the sequence of events rather than only the final sealed structure: the raid, the cupboard break, the new construction, messages, and how long the obstruction remained.

Official Softcore settings provide a documented example of a time-limited protection rule. After a raider breaks a Softcore tool cupboard, raiders cannot seal or grief that base for 48 hours. That period applies to the Softcore mode; it is not a promise that every community server or standard Rust server has the same protection.

What to do when someone is griefing you

1. Read the server rules first

Open the server’s rules page, welcome message, loading-screen notice, website or Discord information. Search for sections covering griefing, harassment, door camping, trapping, raid limits, building restrictions, offline raids, alliance rules and reporting. Note the server name and any rule version or date shown. If the rule is unclear, ask a moderator for a written interpretation rather than escalating in chat.

2. Get to safety and preserve what you can

Move away from the confrontation if doing so is safe. Avoid giving an aggressor additional opportunities to provoke a reaction or destroy evidence. If you can still access the base, check the TC, upkeep timer and building privilege without taking actions that could overwrite the situation you need to document.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Capture useful evidence

  • Record video or take screenshots that show the player name, structures, chat and the action itself.
  • Write down the date and time, server name, map area or coordinates, and your own player name.
  • Save the relevant rule text or a link to the server’s rules page.
  • Keep the original files and do not crop out details that establish context.
  • For a repeated pattern, make a short timeline instead of sending unrelated clips with no explanation.

Facepunch does not specify one required evidence format in the cited conduct guidance. These details simply make it easier for a moderator or support agent to understand what happened.

4. Use the server’s reporting channel

Submit a ticket, use the designated Discord channel or run the server’s report command, whichever the rules identify. State the rule section, the player’s name, the approximate time and the action you want reviewed. Keep the description factual: say that a player broke the TC and built a wall over the exit at a particular time, rather than labeling the person with insults.

5. Escalate platform violations appropriately

If the conduct also involves threats, stalking, cheating, impersonation or other behavior covered by Facepunch’s Code of Conduct or Terms of Service, use the in-game reporting tools or contact Facepunch support. A community moderator may be unable to address platform-level behavior, while Facepunch may not adjudicate every local rule dispute.

6. Do not retaliate in a way that creates a second violation

Do not answer harassment with threats, stalking, cheating or abusive messages. Retaliation can make both players subject to sanctions and can obscure the original incident. Block or mute the player where the game or platform provides those controls, then let the documented report proceed.

7. Leave when enforcement is consistently poor

If moderators ignore clear violations, change rules without notice or apply them selectively, moving to another server is a legitimate solution. Your time is better spent on a server that publishes its standards, identifies a working reporting route and demonstrates consistent enforcement.

Scenario playbooks

Someone keeps door camping you

First decide whether the player is holding an exit during an active fight or repeatedly returning after the fight has ended. Record each occurrence with times and locations. Check whether the server limits door camping or harassment, then report the pattern through the stated channel. Avoid opening the door solely to provoke a fight if your goal is to preserve evidence.

You are trapped or boxed in

Take a screenshot or video showing the enclosing structures and your inability to leave. If the server has a raid-block or building-denial rule, quote that section in the report. Do not destroy evidence before recording it unless leaving immediately is necessary for safety.

Your TC was taken and the base was sealed

Document the cupboard state, the new structures and the timeline from the raid. Check whether the server has a post-raid sealing delay or Softcore-style protection. Ask an administrator to review the action under that rule; do not assume the 48-hour Softcore restriction applies outside Softcore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A player follows and threatens you across sessions

Save the messages, player identifiers and dates, and report the behavior as a pattern of harassment or stalking. Use platform reporting if the messages violate Facepunch’s Code of Conduct or Terms of Service. Do not publish personal information or attempt to identify the person outside the game.

Protection available in official Softcore mode

Softcore is a distinct Rust game mode with settings intended to reduce the cost of losing a base. Its documented protections are limited and mode-specific:

Softcore setting Documented value What it means
Maximum team size Four players Teams are capped at four in this mode.
PvP damage 25% less Player-versus-player damage is reduced compared with the mode’s normal baseline.
Loot retained after a raid 50% of storage loot Half of the contents of storage is retained under the mode’s rules after a raid.
Anti-seal period 48 hours after the TC is broken Raiders cannot seal or grief the base during this documented period.

These settings do not make a player immune to attacks, and they do not control every community server. Confirm that the server is actually running Softcore and read any additional rules before relying on a protection period.

How to choose a server with better grief protection

No central Rust-wide statistic shows how often griefing occurs or how frequently reports succeed. Server quality is therefore best judged by its published process and observed consistency rather than by an unsupported success percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Clear definitions: The rules should explain what counts as griefing, harassment, trapping, sealing and excessive camping.
  • Specific raid permissions: Look for limits on raid timing, offline raids, cupboard takeover and post-raid construction.
  • Accessible moderation: A ticket form, in-game command or monitored Discord channel should have clear instructions.
  • Predictable enforcement: Staff should apply the same rules to regulars and new players and explain decisions when practical.
  • Protection settings: Check for raid blocks, beginner areas, Softcore operation or other protections, and note their exact duration and scope.
  • Mod disclosure: Facepunch guidance requires community servers to comply with its rules, and plugins or mods should be disclosed as required by that guidance.

Ask current players how reports are handled, but treat anecdotes as context rather than proof. A server with fewer advertised protections can still be playable if its moderators respond consistently; a server with impressive claims is risky if no one can explain how to report a violation.

A concise report template

You can adapt this structure to the server’s required format:

  1. Server: Give the exact server name and region if displayed.
  2. Players: List your name and the accused player or team name exactly as shown.
  3. Time and place: Include the date, approximate time, map area or coordinates.
  4. Rule: Quote or identify the relevant section of the server rules.
  5. Events: Describe the sequence in chronological order, including the TC break, building, trapping or messages.
  6. Evidence: Attach unedited screenshots or video and identify the timestamp where the action appears.
  7. Request: Ask for a rule review and state whether the obstruction is still active.

This format separates verifiable facts from conclusions and gives moderators enough information to locate logs or observe the site themselves.

Limits of what can be concluded

Facepunch’s public rules establish that griefing, harassment, stalking, threats and interference are prohibited, but they do not publish one universal list covering every Rust tactic. Community servers fill that gap with their own definitions and enforcement. A player should therefore describe the conduct precisely and identify the applicable rule instead of claiming that a mechanic is always legal or always forbidden.

The same caution applies to protection features. The 24-hour decay protection described by Devblog 198 concerns resources in a destroyed cupboard and connected blocks; it does not protect blocks added afterward. The 48-hour anti-seal period belongs to Softcore settings. Neither figure should be presented as a universal timer for every Rust server.
