Treat a hacked Django server as a full infrastructure incident, not as a problem that can be fixed by deleting one web shell or changing one setting. Isolate affected systems, preserve evidence, rotate every credential that may have been exposed, determine the attacker’s reach, remove persistence, rebuild from a trusted image or clean installation, restore only verified data, and validate the hardened deployment before allowing production traffic.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This order matters: destructive cleanup can erase evidence, while reconnecting a host before credentials and persistence are dealt with gives an attacker a route back in.

1. Contain the compromise without destroying evidence
From a trusted workstation, isolate the affected host and any network segments it can reach. Apply the narrowest control that stops continued access while preserving the information needed for investigation. Depending on the architecture, that can mean removing the instance from the load balancer, restricting security-group or firewall rules, blocking known malicious connections, or temporarily disconnecting a public-facing system.
Do not use the compromised server as your control console. If the attacker may be monitoring email, chat, or shell sessions, use an out-of-band channel and a clean administrative device. CISA’s incident-response guidance emphasizes balancing containment with evidence preservation and service availability; taking a system offline is appropriate when continued exposure is more dangerous than the outage.

2. Preserve volatile and persistent evidence
Before reinstalling, deleting files, or rotating logs, capture what investigators may need. Record the time zone, current time, people taking actions, and every command or change. When feasible, collect:
- Copies of web-server, reverse-proxy, Django application, authentication, database, cloud, SSH, firewall, CI/CD, and endpoint logs.
- A disk or system image of the affected host.
- Volatile memory, running-process data, active network connections, loaded modules, and scheduled tasks.
- File hashes and copies of suspicious scripts, uploaded files, service definitions, startup files, and configuration changes.
Store evidence in write-protected or otherwise access-controlled storage and preserve the original timestamps. If legal, regulatory, or insurance action is possible, involve the appropriate response or forensic team before making changes that could alter evidence. Keep working copies separate from originals.
3. Establish an incident owner and a written timeline
Assign one person to approve containment, recovery, and the return to service. Keep a contemporaneous timeline containing alerts, observed indicators, isolation actions, credential rotations, rebuilds, and validation results. A clear record prevents two responders from undoing each other’s changes and gives later investigators a defensible account of what happened.
Rotate credentials from a clean environment
Assume that secrets readable by the application, host, deployment pipeline, or database may have been copied. Perform rotations from a trusted device and revoke the old values rather than merely changing them in one place. Sequence dependent services so that the application does not repeatedly fail with stale credentials.
| Credential or access | Required action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system and administrator passwords | Reset them and invalidate existing administrative sessions. Check for newly created privileged accounts. | An attacker who retained a local or remote account can return even after the web application is rebuilt. |
| SSH keys and other private keys | Revoke or remove exposed keys, issue replacements, and review authorized-key files and bastion access. | Private keys can provide direct access that bypasses Django entirely. |
Django SECRET_KEY |
Generate a large, unique replacement; remove the old value from every environment and secret store. | Django uses the key to sign sessions, password-reset tokens, and other data. Exposure requires immediate rotation. |
| Database and cache credentials | Change passwords or tokens, restrict the accounts’ privileges, and update the rebuilt deployment. | Database access can expose or alter user data even if the web process is clean. |
| Cloud, CI/CD, service-account, API, and registry tokens | Revoke old tokens, issue least-privilege replacements, and inspect pipeline history for unauthorized use. | Build and deployment credentials can recreate the compromise or spread it to other systems. |
| User and operator sessions | Invalidate active sessions and require affected users and administrators to sign in again. Reset passwords where compromise is plausible. | Stolen cookies or tokens remain useful until explicitly revoked or expired. |
Django documents SECRET_KEY_FALLBACKS for staged key changes. Use a fallback only for the shortest migration window, then remove the old key. Rotating the key can invalidate sessions and password-reset tokens, so plan the user impact and communicate the forced sign-in. Do not place the replacement key in source control, images, tickets, shell history, or ordinary logs; load it from an environment variable or a protected secret file.

Determine what the attacker could reach
Scope the incident before choosing what to restore. Preserve copies of logs before retention policies overwrite them, then correlate events across layers rather than relying on the Django log alone.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Review the entry point
Identify the first suspicious request, process, login, or deployment. Look for vulnerable Django or third-party packages, exposed administration interfaces, weak credentials, unsafe upload handling, leaked secrets, misconfigured proxies, and unauthorized changes in the CI/CD system. Record the vulnerable version and the fixed version you will deploy.
Look for persistence
Search for unfamiliar users, SSH keys, cron jobs, systemd services, timers, startup scripts, shell profiles, web-server includes, modified application files, database users, scheduled database jobs, and pipeline variables. Check whether a process or account has been granted new privileges. A deleted web shell is not proof that persistence is gone.
Trace data access and movement
Review authentication and authorization events, database queries where available, object-storage access, administrative actions, and outbound connections. Pay attention to bulk reads, unusual export activity, new destinations, and connections made by processes that normally serve web requests only. Preserve evidence of accessed records so notification and legal decisions can be based on facts rather than assumptions.
Check adjacent systems
Use the compromised host’s credentials, network routes, and logs to examine load balancers, databases, caches, queues, source repositories, build runners, cloud accounts, monitoring systems, and other hosts in the same trust boundary. A Django application incident can become a wider infrastructure incident if a service account was reused.

Decide whether to clean or rebuild
When you cannot prove the integrity of the operating system, runtime, or deployment tooling, rebuilding is the safer choice. In-place cleaning may be reasonable only when forensic analysis establishes a narrow, well-understood change and you can independently verify every affected component.
| Observed condition | Preferred response |
|---|---|
| Unknown attacker access, root or administrator privileges, modified system binaries, or unexplained persistence | Isolate the host, preserve it for evidence, and replace it with a clean installation or trusted golden image. |
| Compromise limited to a disposable application instance, with immutable infrastructure and verified image provenance | Retire the instance and deploy a rebuilt image; do not attempt to repair the running copy. |
| Only a single, documented application vulnerability with no evidence of host or credential access | Contain, preserve evidence, patch, rotate potentially exposed secrets, and obtain an independent integrity check before deciding whether replacement is necessary. |
| Backup or image provenance is uncertain | Do not restore it directly to production. Validate it in a segmented recovery environment and use a known-clean source instead. |
Deleting malicious files or reinstalling one Python package does not establish trust. Persistence may exist in the operating system, deployment account, database, scheduled tasks, or a neighboring system.
Eradicate the compromise and build a clean deployment
- Freeze the affected instance. Keep the preserved image and logs under controlled access. Do not continue normal administration on the compromised host.
- Patch the original weakness. Update the operating system, Python runtime, Django, and all dependencies to supported versions. Review current security advisories and remove packages that are not needed.
- Create a trusted base. Start from a clean installation or golden image whose provenance and hashes are known. Apply only documented configuration changes, and build it with a clean pipeline and newly rotated credentials.
- Remove unauthorized access. Recreate accounts from an approved inventory, delete unknown users and keys, review privilege assignments, and remove malicious services, timers, jobs, startup files, and pipeline credentials.
- Deploy the application from trusted source. Compare the source revision with an approved commit, inspect dependency lock files, and verify artifact hashes. Do not copy executable files or configuration from the compromised host.
- Scan before exposure. Run malware and integrity scans on the image and application tree. Review listening ports, running processes, installed packages, scheduled tasks, and outbound network policy.
- Segment recovery systems. Keep the build, backup, and restoration networks separated from production until validation is complete. Use temporary recovery credentials, then rotate them again before service begins.
Restore data without reintroducing the attacker
Data restoration is separate from application restoration. Select a backup created before the compromise, but do not assume an older backup is automatically clean. Validate its creation time, access history, integrity, and contents in an isolated environment.
- Scan restored files and inspect database records for injected users, malicious HTML, altered permissions, and unexpected administrative objects.
- Compare schemas and migrations with the approved application revision.
- Restore only the datasets required for operation, keeping an untouched copy for investigation.
- Use least-privilege database accounts and restrict database and cache listeners to application hosts.
- Confirm that offline, encrypted backups exist and that recovery steps have been tested rather than merely documented.
If the compromise date is uncertain, preserve multiple recovery points and document why the selected point is considered trustworthy. Reset affected user and service accounts after restoration, not just before it.

Run the deployment checks
From the application environment, run:
python manage.py check --deploy
Resolve every finding that applies to the deployment. This command automates checks for several security problems, but it is not a substitute for reviewing the host, proxy, network, secrets, and application authorization.
Disable debug information
Set DEBUG = False in production. Django’s documentation is explicit: “You must never enable debug in production.” Debug pages can disclose settings, paths, source context, and other information useful to an attacker. Confirm the effective value at runtime rather than checking only a development settings file.
Protect the secret key
Generate a large random value unique to this deployment, keep it outside source control, and load it from a protected environment variable or file. Remove copies from repositories, images, logs, notebooks, and incident tickets. If a staged rotation uses SECRET_KEY_FALLBACKS, set an expiry for the migration and remove old fallbacks promptly.
Constrain hosts and transport
Set ALLOWED_HOSTS to the precise hostnames the service must answer for; do not use a broad wildcard as a convenience. Force HTTPS at the reverse proxy or web server, verify that TLS termination and proxy headers are configured correctly, and enable SecurityMiddleware. Configure secure and HTTP-only cookies, appropriate same-site behavior, and HSTS only after confirming that every required hostname and subdomain is served correctly over HTTPS.
Use a production server
Do not expose Django’s development server. The checklist states that runserver is not designed for production. Serve the application through a supported WSGI or ASGI server behind a correctly configured reverse proxy, with restricted management access and explicit timeouts and request-size limits.
Best Value
Protect uploads and backend services
Treat every uploaded file as untrusted input. Store uploads outside executable paths and configure the web server so uploaded scripts cannot run. Restrict database and cache services to the application hosts, protect their credentials like SECRET_KEY, and verify that backups are available.
Keep dependencies and authentication controls current
Update Django and third-party packages, review security advisories, and remove abandoned or unnecessary dependencies. Add rate limiting or lockout controls to authentication endpoints; OWASP identifies tools such as django-ratelimit and django-axes as examples of controls against brute-force attempts. Test authorization separately from authentication so a valid account cannot access another user’s records or administrative functions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Validate the rebuilt deployment in stages
Deploy the rebuilt image into an isolated staging or recovery environment first. The environment should use the same proxy, TLS, settings, database schema, and deployment process intended for production, but without production traffic.
- Verify provenance. Check image, package, application-artifact, and configuration hashes against approved values.
- Check effective configuration. Confirm
DEBUGis false,ALLOWED_HOSTSis narrow, the new secret is active, secure cookies are enabled, and no recovery credentials remain. - Exercise identity controls. Test login, logout, password reset, session invalidation, multifactor requirements where used, rate limits, and forced reauthentication after the key rotation.
- Test authorization. Exercise each role against permitted and forbidden records, administrative URLs, object-level permissions, and API endpoints.
- Inspect network behavior. Review listening ports, DNS lookups, outbound connections, proxy headers, certificate validation, and database or cache reachability.
- Review logs and alerts. Confirm that authentication failures, privilege changes, errors, suspicious uploads, and unexpected outbound traffic reach the monitoring system with useful timestamps and context.
- Run security and functional tests. Include dependency scanning, upload tests, request-size tests, CSRF and clickjacking protections, migration checks, and ordinary application health checks.
- Rotate recovery secrets. Replace any temporary credentials, tokens, or keys used while building and validating the system.
The incident owner should record the evidence for each check and define explicit acceptance criteria. Production traffic should remain disconnected until the owner accepts the containment, eradication, restoration, and monitoring results.
Return to service and watch for recurrence
Reconnect traffic gradually, using a canary instance or a small percentage of requests when the architecture permits. Keep the preserved evidence and the compromised host isolated. Monitor authentication, administrator actions, process and file integrity, outbound connections, error rates, and unusual data access closely during the initial operating period.
Maintain a list of indicators discovered during the investigation and alert on them across hosts, cloud accounts, repositories, and pipelines. Confirm that backups continue to run, remain encrypted and offline where required, and can be restored. Schedule a post-incident review to close the exploited weakness, reduce unnecessary privileges, improve log retention, and rehearse the rebuild procedure while the details are fresh.
Common recovery mistakes
- Changing only the Django password: attackers may still hold SSH keys, cloud tokens, database credentials, sessions, or CI/CD access.
- Deleting the web shell immediately: this can destroy evidence and leave other persistence mechanisms untouched.
- Trusting the old server after a package update: an attacker with host-level access may have modified binaries, services, users, or deployment tools.
- Restoring the newest backup automatically: it may contain injected accounts, altered data, or malware created after the intrusion.
- Leaving a broad host allow-list or debug enabled “temporarily”: temporary production exceptions are frequently forgotten and expose useful information.
- Reusing recovery credentials: secrets used during an incident can appear in shell history, logs, screenshots, or temporary files and should be rotated before launch.
- Skipping authorization tests: successful login proves authentication works, not that users are prevented from reading or changing another user’s data.
The practical standard for a safe return is demonstrable trust: preserved evidence, revoked old access, removed persistence, a clean and verifiable build, validated data, hardened Django settings, tested authorization, and monitoring that can reveal a renewed intrusion.
