On a U.S. Nutrition Facts label, look for the Trans Fat line directly beneath Saturated Fat. Read the grams listed per serving, then check the serving size and ingredient list. A panel showing 0 g is not absolute proof that the food contains none: under FDA rounding rules, less than 0.5 gram per serving may be declared as zero.
For a reliable comparison, calculate how much you will actually eat, compare grams rather than a nonexistent trans-fat % Daily Value, and look for partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredients.

Where trans fat appears on a Nutrition Facts label
On the U.S. version of the Nutrition Facts panel, trans fat has its own line immediately below saturated fat. The amount is expressed in grams, usually in a format such as “Trans Fat 0 g” or “Trans Fat 1 g.” FDA guidance describes this placement and unit in its Small Entity Compliance Guide for trans-fat labeling.

The number is tied to the stated serving size, not automatically to the entire package. A frozen meal, snack bag or bakery package can contain several servings even when it looks like one portion. Read the serving-size line first, because every subsequent nutrient amount uses that basis.

Trans fat does not have a percentage Daily Value on the U.S. panel. FDA explains the absence of a trans-fat %DV in its guide to percent Daily Value. For this nutrient, the useful comparison is grams per serving and grams in the amount you actually eat.
How do I find trans fat on a nutrition label?
- Confirm the label and serving size. Make sure you are reading the current package and note both the serving-size description and the number of servings per container. FDA explains how serving sizes work in its Serving Size on the Nutrition Facts Label guidance.
- Locate Saturated Fat. Scan the fat section of the panel until you find the line for saturated fat.
- Read the line immediately below it. That line is labeled “Trans Fat.” Record the grams shown, including a zero.
- Adjust for the amount eaten. If you eat two listed servings, multiply the displayed grams by two. If you eat half a serving, multiply by 0.5. This gives the amount represented by the panel’s declared value.
- Check the ingredients when the number is zero. Look for the exact or near-exact wording “partially hydrogenated oil” or “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.”
- Compare like with like. Put products on the same serving basis, and compare the trans-fat gram amounts and ingredient wording together rather than relying on a front-of-package claim.
Why a label can show 0 g and still contain a small amount
FDA rounding rules allow a manufacturer to declare less than 0.5 gram of trans fat per serving as 0 g. The rule is explained in the agency’s Food Labeling Guide and its trans-fat labeling guidance. Therefore, “0 g” means the declared amount is below the rounding threshold for that serving, not necessarily that laboratory testing would find no molecules of trans fat.
| Actual amount in one serving (illustrative) | What the panel may display | What happens if you eat two servings |
|---|---|---|
| 0 g | 0 g | 0 g |
| 0.20 g | 0 g | About 0.40 g represented by the underlying amounts |
| 0.49 g | 0 g | About 0.98 g represented by the underlying amounts |
| 0.50 g or more | A nonzero gram value is generally required | Multiply the declared amount by the servings eaten |
The middle rows are arithmetic illustrations of the rounding rule, not measurements of a particular food. Because each serving is rounded independently, eating several servings of a product labeled 0 g can add up to a meaningful amount even though the panel never prints a nonzero figure.

What “partially hydrogenated oil” means on the ingredient list
Partially hydrogenated oil (PHO) is the ingredient wording most directly associated with artificial trans fat in processed foods. FDA identifies PHOs as the major source of artificial trans fat and explains that the agency determined they were no longer generally recognized as safe. The agency’s final determination on removing trans fat from PHOs describes that regulatory action.

If “partially hydrogenated oil” or “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” appears in the ingredients while the Nutrition Facts panel says 0 g, the two statements are not automatically contradictory. The declared amount can fall below 0.5 gram per serving and round to zero, while the ingredient list still identifies the oil used in the recipe. The FDA Food Labeling Guide specifically addresses this combination.
Ingredient lists are ordered by weight, so the position of the oil can provide context about how much of the recipe it represents. Position does not convert the rounded nutrition number into an exact trans-fat quantity, however. The label does not tell you whether the amount is 0.01, 0.20 or 0.49 gram per serving.

Modern packages may omit PHOs because of FDA’s regulatory changes, but recipes, manufacturing dates and imported products can differ. Read the package in front of you instead of assuming that an older online listing or a similar flavor has identical ingredients.
Artificial and naturally occurring trans fat are not the same label clue
FDA says PHOs were the major source of artificial trans fat in processed foods. Some trans fat also occurs naturally in foods from ruminant animals such as cows and goats. The agency’s PHO determination did not eliminate naturally occurring trans fat from those foods.
This distinction explains why removing PHOs reduced artificial trans fat without making the nutrient disappear from every food category. A dairy or meat product can contain naturally occurring trans fat even when no partially hydrogenated oil appears in its ingredients. Conversely, a packaged food with a PHO ingredient may show 0 g because of the per-serving rounding rule.

How to compare two foods accurately
When deciding between products, compare the same three pieces of information in the same order: trans-fat grams per serving, serving size and ingredients. The following examples are hypothetical to show the method.
| Example label | Serving size | Trans Fat line | Ingredient clue | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product A | 1 piece | 0 g | No partially hydrogenated oil listed | No declared trans fat; the ingredient list offers no PHO clue. The rounded value could still be below 0.5 g per piece. |
| Product B | 2 pieces | 0 g | Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil listed | The zero may reflect rounding, and the ingredient list identifies PHO. Eating four pieces means two listed servings. |
| Product C | 1 cup | 1 g | No PHO listed | The panel declares 1 g per cup; check whether the product contains naturally occurring trans fat or another source. |
Product A and Product B cannot be ranked by the printed zero alone. Their serving sizes differ, and Product B has the PHO clue. Product C has a nonzero declaration, so its listed gram amount is the starting point for comparison even though the ingredient list does not name a PHO.
Normalize the serving amount
Suppose a package lists 0 g per serving and defines one serving as two crackers. Eating six crackers equals three listed servings. The displayed number remains 0 g for each serving, but the possibility of an unreported amount below 0.5 g applies three times. If another brand lists one serving as six crackers, compare the amounts only after recognizing that the serving definitions are different.
Account for the whole package
For a package with four servings, multiply the declared amount by four to estimate the trans fat represented by the printed values if you eat everything. With a nonzero declaration, this is straightforward: a label showing 1 g per serving represents 4 g across four servings. With a rounded zero, the exact total cannot be recovered from the panel; the label establishes only that each serving is below the rounding threshold.

Does trans fat have a % Daily Value?
No. FDA does not assign a %DV for trans fat on the Nutrition Facts label, so there is no percentage to use as a benchmark. The absence of a percentage is not a missing printing error and does not mean the nutrient is unimportant.
Use grams instead. First compare the same serving basis, then multiply for the amount you plan to eat. A product with “0 g” and PHO in the ingredients deserves different scrutiny from a product with “0 g” and no PHO wording, even though both panels display the same number.
Do not borrow the saturated-fat %DV to estimate trans fat. Saturated fat and trans fat are separate nutrients with separate lines and different label rules.
What FDA’s labeling changes do—and do not—tell you
FDA required trans fat to be declared on Nutrition Facts labels beginning in 2006. Later, the agency’s action on PHOs set compliance dates extending through January 1, 2020. The timeline is summarized on FDA’s Changes to the Nutrition Facts Label page and in the agency’s PHO determination.

Best Value
The regulatory action focused on PHOs. FDA states that naturally occurring trans fat in foods from animals was not affected by the PHO determination. A claim that trans fat has vanished from every food would therefore be too broad.
Common label-reading mistakes
- Treating 0 g as an absolute zero. A displayed zero can represent any amount below 0.5 gram per serving.
- Ignoring serving size. Eating two or three servings multiplies the underlying amount, even when each serving is labeled 0 g.
- Looking only at the front of the package. “Trans-fat-free” style claims do not replace the Nutrition Facts and ingredient checks; use the regulated panel and list.
- Searching only for the word “trans.” The ingredient list may reveal the relevant clue under “partially hydrogenated oil,” while the nutrient line itself may read 0 g.
- Expecting a %DV. Trans fat has no %DV, so compare grams.
- Assuming every product in a category has the same recipe. Brands, package sizes, countries and reformulations can change serving sizes and ingredients.
- Using an old listing as if it were current. Regulatory changes and reformulations make the package in your hand the controlling source for that purchase.
Worked label-reading scenarios
A snack with one listed serving
The panel says one serving is three cookies and lists Trans Fat 0 g. You eat three cookies, so the declared amount is 0 g for that serving. Check the ingredients: if no partially hydrogenated oil appears, the label provides no PHO clue, but the rounding rule still means the printed zero is not proof of absolute absence.
A snack with two servings eaten
The panel says one serving is three cookies and lists Trans Fat 0 g. You eat six cookies, or two servings. The product may contain less than 0.5 gram in each serving even though the panel prints zero; eating two servings applies that uncertainty twice. If PHO appears in the ingredients, treat it as an additional reason to choose a different product when your goal is to avoid artificial trans fat.
A meal with a nonzero value
The label lists 1 g of trans fat per serving and four servings per package. Eating one serving corresponds to the declared 1 g. Eating the full package corresponds to four times the declared amount. Read the ingredient list separately to see whether PHO is named; the gram declaration alone does not identify whether the trans fat is artificial or naturally occurring.
What the label can and cannot establish
A Nutrition Facts panel gives a regulated amount for the stated serving and a regulated ingredient list for that particular product and package. It can tell you whether the declared trans fat is zero or nonzero, how much the declared amount is per serving, and whether PHO wording appears among the ingredients.
It cannot reveal an exact quantity hidden by rounding below 0.5 gram per serving. It also cannot predict the amount in a different recipe, a different package size or an older version of the product. If you prepare a recipe yourself, calculate from the labels of the ingredients and the number of portions produced; do not transfer a packaged product’s value to the homemade version.
Imported foods may use a different nutrition-label format or different rounding conventions. The instructions above describe the U.S. Nutrition Facts label and FDA rules. When a package is sold under another country’s labeling system, use that country’s serving and declaration rules rather than assuming the U.S. format applies.
