Caller ID and spam labels can help you spot a suspicious call, but they cannot prove who is calling: scammers can spoof a familiar name or local-looking number. Don’t share personal or payment details with an unexpected caller. Hang up, then contact the organization using a number from its official website or another source you trust.
How to tell whether an iPhone call may be a scam
iPhone can show caller information supplied by Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, or compatible caller-identification apps. A name, number, or spam warning is a clue—not authentication. The FTC warns that scammers can fake caller ID, including to make a call appear to come from a local number. See the FTC’s guidance on calls from fake numbers.

- Be wary of unexpected requests for passwords, verification codes, personal information, or payment.
- Do not trust a familiar name or local area code by itself.
- If the caller claims to represent a bank, government agency, delivery company, or other organization, end the call and independently look up its official contact number.
Screen calls from numbers not saved in Contacts
Apple’s current iPhone guide provides screening choices for unknown callers. The available labels and options can vary by iOS version and region. Open Settings > Apps > Phone, then choose the available call-screening behavior. See Apple’s guide to screening and blocking calls and Apple’s instructions for managing unknown callers.
- Let calls ring: Unsaved callers can ring through normally.
- Ask Reason for Calling: The phone asks an unknown caller for more information before it rings, giving you a chance to decide whether to answer.
- Silence: Calls from unsaved numbers go to voicemail instead of ringing. Save important legitimate callers in Contacts if you use this option, and check voicemail for calls you might need.
If missing a legitimate call would cause a problem, screening is generally a safer choice than silencing every unsaved number.

Filter carrier-identified spam and block a caller
Turn on the Spam filter
If the option is available, go to Settings > Apps > Phone and enable Spam under call filtering. Apple says calls the carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud are silenced, sent to voicemail, and moved to the Spam list. The feature depends on carrier identification; it does not catch every scam call.
Block a specific number
To block an individual caller, open the number or contact details in the Phone app and choose Block Contact. Blocking is useful for repeat callers, but it does not authenticate other callers or guarantee that a scammer cannot call from a different or spoofed number.

Report a call from Recents when an extension is enabled
There is not a universal Apple report button available to every iPhone user. The reporting action Apple documents depends on an enabled unwanted-communication reporting extension. Check Settings > Phone > SMS/Call Reporting for an available extension; only one can be enabled at a time. With an extension enabled, swipe left on the call in Recents and select Report. The extension collects additional information and handles the report. Details are in Apple’s SMS and Call Spam Reporting documentation.

Report an unwanted call to the FTC
When reporting an unwanted call, provide the number shown on caller ID and any number the caller asked you to call back. Caller ID may be spoofed, but those details can still help authorities identify patterns. The FTC explains how to stop calls on a mobile phone and how to block and report unwanted calls.

Report money lost to fraud
If the caller persuaded you to send money or otherwise caused a loss, report the fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, as directed by the FTC’s consumer alert.
File an FCC complaint
The FCC accepts complaints about unwanted calls. If your own number is being spoofed, choose the separate issue for “my own number is being spoofed.” FCC complaints inform its policy and enforcement work; the agency says it does not resolve individual unwanted-call cases. If you live outside the United States
Use your country’s telecom regulator and local fraud-reporting agency. The reporting routes above are the US FTC and FCC processes; reporting channels differ by country.
Choosing additional call protection
Besides iPhone’s built-in screening and carrier-based spam filter, some carriers offer call-blocking services, and compatible third-party apps may identify or block calls. Before enabling a service or app, check what it does to ringing, voicemail, and missed-call records, whether it works with your carrier and in your region, and its cost and privacy practices. The sources cited here do not establish prices or privacy terms for particular products, so compare those details directly with the provider. The FTC also suggests asking your carrier about available services and considering call-blocking apps in its mobile-call guidance.
