Use layered evidence instead: preserve the original media and its context, check signed provenance such as C2PA Content Credentials, look for a developer or publisher disclosure, compare credits and performer statements, and test whether suspected clues repeat across files, scenes, versions, or localizations.
A missing credential is not proof that people made an asset, and a positive credential is not a universal truth meter. It records an asset’s declared origin and edits. Treat visual and audio anomalies as leads until independent production evidence confirms what happened.

What counts as convincing evidence?
“AI-generated” can describe several different production steps: a fully synthetic illustration, an AI-assisted texture later repainted by an artist, a cloned voice used for temporary dialogue, or a human performance modified by a tool. Verification should therefore answer a narrower question: what evidence connects this exact asset, in this exact game version, to a particular tool or process?
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe strongest cases combine provenance with independent documentation. A credential attached to the original file is more useful than a screenshot of a credential-free copy. A cast-list change, performer statement, or developer disclosure is more useful than a listener’s impression that a line sounds robotic. Repeated evidence across the same character, asset family, or patch is stronger than one isolated defect.

| Evidence | What it can establish | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Signed Content Credentials or another intact provenance record | A recorded chain of origin, tools, and edits for the file or a region of it | That every recorded claim is truthful, that the person named owns the work, or that an unrecorded step never occurred |
| Developer, publisher, studio, or performer disclosure | How the production team says the asset was made or licensed, with a date and scope | That the statement covers every version, language, or asset in the game |
| Credits, contracts, union notices, and production records | Who was hired, credited, or told about a digital-replica use | That an uncredited asset was not generated or that a credit list is complete |
| Repeatable visual or vocal anomalies | A reason to investigate a tool-assisted or synthetic workflow | Positive identification of a generator; compression, localization, post-processing, and stylization can create similar artifacts |
| A detector score, watermark, or watermark absence | At most, a signal associated with a particular detector or supported tool | A universal yes-or-no answer about human authorship |
Keep two columns in your notes: “observed” for what is directly visible or audible, and “confirmed” for what a primary source or intact provenance record establishes. Do not move an observation into the confirmed column merely because several people agree that it feels synthetic.
Preserve the asset before you investigate
Evidence is easiest to lose when a trailer is replaced, a screenshot is recompressed, or a game patch changes the files. Capture the material first, then analyze a working copy.
- Save the original context. Keep the screenshot, trailer, audio clip, extracted asset, or game file as obtained. Record the URL or store page, publication date, account that posted it, platform, region, and game version or patch number.
- Make a preservation copy. Do not edit, normalize, denoise, resize, or re-encode the preserved file. Work from a duplicate so later analysis can be reproduced.
- Record a file hash when possible. A SHA-256 or equivalent hash lets another investigator confirm that a downloaded file is the same file you examined. A hash identifies the bytes; it does not authenticate the creator.
- Document transformations. Note whether the source was a livestream, trailer export, capture card recording, in-game extraction, social-media download, or re-encoded clip. Record any cropping, subtitle burn-in, loudness processing, frame interpolation, or image upscaling.
- Collect comparison material. Save official screenshots, press-kit images, later patches, gameplay recordings, subtitles, localized audio, and credit screens. A controlled comparison is more informative than a single viral example.
For a public report, publish enough context for readers to distinguish the original from your analysis file. If the original cannot be shared because of copyright or access restrictions, describe exactly how it was obtained and show that your conclusions do not depend on an unrepeatable edit.

How to investigate game art
1. Inspect provenance and Content Credentials
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) defines provenance as “the facts about the history of a piece of digital content.” Its specification describes a tamper-evident structure that can record an asset’s origin, tools, time, and edits. C2PA implementation guidance also supports locating an AI modification to a particular region of an image when the creator’s workflow records that information.
Open the original file in a verifier that can read C2PA manifests or inspect the file’s embedded metadata. Check whether the record is intact, which application or tool signed it, what edits are listed, and whether the credential covers the complete image or only a region. Preserve a copy of the manifest or a screenshot of the verification result with the file hash and date.
A credential may be absent because a platform stripped metadata, a screenshot flattened the original, the asset was exported through an unsupported application, or the creator never attached one. Those possibilities make absence inconclusive. Conversely, a credential associates the file with the recorded tooling and claims; it does not prove legal ownership, artistic responsibility, or that the record describes every earlier step.

2. Examine visual clues as hypotheses
Zooming in can reveal leads, but it cannot by itself identify a generator. Check for:
- Textures that are repeated, mirrored, or tiled in ways that do not match the scene’s geometry.
- Small objects, fingers, straps, weapon parts, foliage, or background props that melt together or change shape between nearby frames.
- Unreadable, inconsistent, or almost-correct text and logos on signs, clothing, packaging, and interfaces.
- Impossible perspective, joins that do not meet, or shadows and reflections that disagree with the scene’s light sources.
- Lighting, material response, or line weight that changes abruptly inside one asset.
- An unexplained style shift between characters, props, environments, or adjacent production shots.
Compression blocks, temporal upscaling, sharpening, low-resolution captures, post-processing, and deliberately stylized art can create the same symptoms. Describe the exact location and frame rather than labeling the whole game. A malformed sign in a compressed trailer is weak evidence; the same malformed sign in an uncompressed source, repeated across a texture set, is a stronger lead.
3. Compare the asset across versions and sources
Place the suspected image beside the same scene in the launch build, later patches, official screenshots, and gameplay footage. Look for a texture that is corrected after release, a logo that changes between languages, or a background element that remains identical across unrelated locations. Check whether a supposed defect is actually a deliberate decal, a shader artifact, or a capture error.
Repeatability matters. If a pattern appears in several independently captured scenes and survives different resolutions, it deserves documentation. If it appears once and disappears after recompression, do not present it as proof. Record the build number and platform for every comparison because an updated asset may legitimately differ.
4. Check credits and production statements
Search the game’s end credits, official website, press materials, art-director interviews, developer posts, and production disclosures. Capture the exact wording and publication date. Distinguish statements such as “AI-assisted ideation,” “generated placeholder,” “machine-translated text,” and “final textures generated with a tool”; they describe different scopes.

Ask whether the statement covers concept art, marketing images, in-game materials, user-interface elements, or only an internal prototype. A studio can disclose a tool for promotional key art without saying anything about the shipped game, while a credit may identify an artist who later retouched generated material. Report the scope instead of turning a broad claim into a claim about every asset.

How to investigate voice acting
1. Preserve the cleanest available recording
Save the best-quality source you can obtain and identify whether it came from a stream, trailer, game files, a cutscene capture, or a re-encoded social clip. Note the codec, channel layout, sample-rate conversion, background music, subtitles, and any edits. Streaming compression, noise reduction, time stretching, and lip-sync editing can all make a human performance sound artificial.
2. Check provenance and production documentation first
Look for an intact provenance record on the audio or video container and for documentation from the developer, voice director, localization studio, performer, or union. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s voice-cloning work describes prevention or authentication, real-time monitoring, and post-use evaluation; it also notes that some tools inspect abnormal soundwaves. These are investigation methods, not a single universal detector.
3. Listen for patterns, not one strange syllable
Compare several lines from the same character and, where possible, the same credited performer. Useful observations include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Unstable pronunciation of the same name or word in nearby lines.
- Breaths that arrive at identical intervals, disappear where a human would need one, or cut off unnaturally.
- Flattened emotional dynamics, especially when the scene requires a rapid change from fear to anger or whispering to shouting.
- Sudden timbre, accent, resonance, or microphone-distance changes inside a sentence.
- Robotic coarticulation, blurred consonant transitions, or a phoneme that seems pasted into the word.
- Repeated glitches, unnatural pauses, or identical inflection across lines that should be different.
- Room tone, reverb, or noise-floor changes that do not match the character’s location or the surrounding performance.
Mark timestamps and quote the affected words. Then test whether the same feature occurs in clean, uncompressed lines. A single clipped consonant is weak evidence; a repeatable pronunciation or timbre pattern across many lines is stronger, although it still does not identify the technology without corroboration.
4. Cross-check the performance on screen
Compare lip movement, facial animation, subtitles, timing, and localization. A mouth that does not match a word can result from dubbing, a late script change, subtitle timing, or ordinary editing. A facial performance that is identical across multiple emotional lines may indicate reused animation rather than synthetic speech.
Check other language tracks and the original performance if the game is localized. Differences in sentence length, translation, or editorial cuts can explain timing mismatches. Treat synchronization as supporting evidence only when the same anomaly persists across the original and a controlled comparison.

5. Verify cast and consent records
Review the cast list, voice-director credits, performer statements, studio disclosures, union notices, and reliable reporting about contracts. A missing performer credit can reflect an alias, a localization policy, or a clerical error, so seek a second source. Conversely, a named performer may have supplied a reference performance while a digital replica generated the final lines; the credit alone does not answer how the voice was produced.

A watermark is an attribution or detection signal, not a certificate of human authorship. It can be removed, lost during export, or never applied. Some marks are designed to survive common transformations; others are not. Always identify which tool created the signal and what media, resolution, language, and transformations it supports.
OpenAI documentation explains that C2PA metadata and SynthID can indicate supported OpenAI provenance. The verifier is not a universal AI detector: a missing signal may mean unsupported media, stripped metadata, editing, or a different generator. A positive signal indicates an association with supported tooling; it does not establish that the signal is accurate, who owns the work, or what happened before or after the recorded step.
The FTC’s voice-cloning work and an International Telecommunication Union report both emphasize that no single solution is sufficient and that detection technologies must be continuously updated. No authoritative source establishes a universal accuracy percentage for identifying AI-generated game art or voice acting. Do not convert a detector’s confidence score into a probability that an entire game used AI.
How to write a defensible verification report
A useful report lets another person reproduce your reasoning without asking readers to trust your intuition.
- Define the claim narrowly. State whether you are testing a particular texture, character line, trailer shot, language track, or game build.
- Identify the chain of custody. Give the source, download or capture date, platform, region, version, file hash, and every known transformation.
- Separate observations from conclusions. Quote timestamps, frame numbers, metadata fields, and exact statements before interpreting them.
- Check provenance. Record whether a C2PA manifest or other credential exists, whether it validates, what tool and edits it names, and what part of the asset it covers.
- Seek independent corroboration. Use credits, developer or performer statements, studio records, union information, and repeated examples rather than relying on one detector or one anomaly.
- State alternatives. Explain how compression, upscaling, post-processing, localization, dubbing, asset reuse, or ordinary editing could produce the same observation.
- Assign a conclusion level. Use wording such as “confirmed by the disclosed provenance,” “strongly supported by multiple independent records,” “plausible but unconfirmed,” or “insufficient evidence.”
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Provenance and chain of custody | Is the original file available? Is a signed record intact? Which steps and regions does it cover? |
| Visual or vocal consistency | Does the anomaly repeat across files, scenes, lines, builds, or languages? |
| Disclosure, consent, and credit practice | What did the developer, performer, studio, or union document, and on what date? |
| Reproducibility | Can another investigator observe the same feature from the same source? |
| Robustness to transformation | Does the finding survive ordinary compression, localization, capture, and post-processing checks? |
Labor and legal context for synthetic voices and likenesses
The 2025 SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement is relevant when a game uses covered digital replicas. SAG-AFTRA reports that members ratified the agreement by a 95.04% vote. Its protections distinguish visual and vocal digital replicas and apply objective-identifiability standards. Vocal-replica coverage extends to in-game and cinematic material, while the visual-replica terms are narrower.
Best Value
The agreement’s FAQ says employers must provide a “reasonably specific description of intended use” for a digital replica, including the project, genre, role length, and whether real-time generated dialogue is involved. That documentation can help a reporter establish what a performer was told, but it is not a public detector and does not automatically reveal every asset in a commercial game.
SAG-AFTRA also notes that Tennessee’s 2024 ELVIS Act protects voice, image, and likeness from unauthorized AI use. Legal requirements differ by jurisdiction, contract, union coverage, and the date of the recording. Treat a labor or publicity-rights question separately from a technical-authorship question, and verify the law that applies to the relevant country or state before drawing a legal conclusion.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating a missing watermark as proof of human work
Correct it by checking whether the file passed through a platform or export process that strips metadata and whether the generator or media type supports the watermark at all.
Mistake: declaring AI use from one malformed detail
Correct it by preserving the original, comparing clean sources and versions, and looking for a repeatable pattern. Describe plausible non-AI causes before making an attribution.
Mistake: calling a detector score definitive
Correct it by naming the detector, supported media, model version if available, and known limitations. Use the score as a lead that requires provenance or production evidence.
Mistake: ignoring localization and post-production
Correct it by comparing original and localized tracks, noting dubbing and subtitle edits, and checking whether image or audio processing occurred before you received the file.
Mistake: assuming a credited performer delivered every final syllable
Correct it by checking the contract or disclosure language for digital-replica use, supplemental dialogue, real-time generation, and the scope of the credited role.
A practical decision path
- If an intact credential or direct production record identifies the tool and the exact asset, report that confirmed scope and quote the record.
- If no credential exists, preserve the asset and gather developer, performer, studio, and credit evidence before interpreting artifacts.
- If visual or vocal anomalies appear, test them against compression, editing, localization, and stylization explanations.
- If the same anomaly repeats across independent files or versions, document the pattern and seek a primary statement.
- If evidence remains limited to a detector, watermark absence, or subjective impression, report the result as unconfirmed rather than alleging AI use.
The most reliable identification is therefore a chain of mutually reinforcing records: an original file, a documented history, repeatable observations, and a source that explains the production decision. When those pieces do not align, the accurate answer is uncertainty—not a guess dressed up as detection.
