How to Host Multiple WordPress Sites on a Single VPS (Isolated, Secure Setup)

A practical architecture and deployment guide for running independent WordPress sites on one VPS without sharing users, databases, PHP pools, or web roots.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, one VPS can host several independent WordPress sites. The reliable design is to treat every site as a separate tenant: give it its own Linux user, document root, PHP-FPM pool and socket, database and credentials, Nginx server block, and TLS certificate. This keeps a compromised plugin or broken configuration from automatically exposing every other site.

Use separate WordPress installations for unrelated clients or projects. A 4 GB VPS is commonly estimated to handle about five to 10 low-to-medium-traffic sites when Redis object caching is used, but available RAM—not the number of domains—is normally the limiting factor. The exact capacity depends on PHP workers, database load, plugins, traffic spikes, and background jobs.

What the multi-site VPS architecture should look like

All sites share the VPS kernel, CPU, storage, and network interface, but application-level resources and permissions should be separated. For a site such as example-one.com, create a structure similar to this:

Layer Per-site component Why it matters
Operating system Dedicated Linux user and group Files and running processes do not use a common account.
Files 独ependent home or document-root directory A vulnerable upload or incorrect permission cannot directly modify another site’s files.
PHP One PHP-FPM pool and Unix socket Worker limits can be set per site; pools can use different PHP versions where required.
Web server One Nginx server block per domain Each hostname maps to the correct files and PHP socket.
Database One database and one database user with grants limited to it A leaked WordPress password does not grant access to every site’s tables.
TLS Certificate covering that site’s domain names HTTPS is required for each WordPress installation.

Do not put all sites in one shared directory under one runtime account. That arrangement is easier to create, but it removes the isolation that makes a multi-tenant VPS manageable. Isolation reduces the blast radius of a compromised plugin; it does not replace patching, backups, a firewall, least-privilege permissions, or account security.

Decide between separate installs and WordPress Multisite

Choose separate installations for independent sites

Install WordPress once per client, organization, or unrelated project when sites need independent administrators, plugins, themes, update schedules, or migration paths. Each site then has its own wp-config.php, database credentials, salts, media directory, and recovery process. A failure in one site’s plugin or database is less likely to become a network-wide outage.

Use Multisite for one related network

Multisite can fit a single owner managing a family of closely related sites that intentionally share users, themes, governance, and operational policies. It changes the administration and database model, so moving one site away later can be more involved. Treat it as an application decision, not a shortcut for hosting unrelated customers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check requirements and capacity before installing

Use current supported software

The WordPress requirements page currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer and MariaDB 10.11 or newer, or MySQL 8.0 or newer. HTTPS is required. These recommendations can change, so verify the official requirements immediately before deployment rather than relying on older tutorials that mention PHP 7.4, MySQL 5.7, or older MariaDB releases. Those legacy versions are end-of-life and create a security liability.

A practical base stack is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Nginx, MariaDB, and PHP-FPM with the extensions WordPress needs. Confirm that your distribution’s repositories provide the PHP branch you intend to run and that security updates are available for the full support period.

Estimate how many sites the VPS can carry

A vendor guide estimates that a 4 GB KVM VPS can comfortably run five to 10 low-to-medium-traffic WordPress sites with Redis object caching. That is an estimate, not a benchmark or guarantee. A site with heavy WooCommerce activity, search, image processing, page builders, or scheduled imports can consume more resources than several brochure sites.

Budget memory for the operating system, database buffer pools, PHP-FPM workers, Nginx, Redis, cron jobs, and monitoring. PHP-FPM workers are often the first hidden consumer: a pool configured with 10 workers can reserve substantially more memory than a pool configured with two or three, depending on plugins and request size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Leave headroom for traffic bursts and unattended updates.
  • Watch swap activity, load average, free memory, PHP-FPM queue length, and database slow queries.
  • Expand RAM before adding sites when the server repeatedly swaps or kills workers.
  • Move a high-traffic or resource-heavy site to its own VPS when per-site limits are constantly reached.

Build the VPS base stack

  1. Provision and harden the server. Create a non-root administrative account, require SSH keys, disable password authentication where appropriate, apply all operating-system updates, and configure a firewall that permits SSH on your chosen port plus TCP ports 80 and 443.
  2. Install the services. On Ubuntu, install Nginx, MariaDB, PHP-FPM, and the PHP extensions required by WordPress (commonly the MySQL driver, XML, curl, mbstring, GD or Imagick, ZIP, and internationalization). Package names vary by PHP version, so use the names supplied by your distribution.
  3. Enable and start services. Enable Nginx, MariaDB, and the matching PHP-FPM service so they start after reboot. Check each service status before creating sites.
  4. Run database hardening. Remove anonymous database accounts, test databases, and remote root access. Use a long administrative password or socket-based local administration, depending on your distribution’s defaults.
  5. Set a consistent time zone and time synchronization. Correct timestamps make logs, scheduled tasks, certificate renewals, and incident investigation easier.

Keep the operating-system PHP version and each site’s PHP-FPM configuration documented. If different sites require different PHP branches, install only supported branches and route each pool to its own socket; do not leave an end-of-life interpreter online for convenience.

Provision each WordPress site as an isolated tenant

Repeat the following workflow for every domain. The example names are illustrative; replace them with your own values.

1. Create the Linux account and directories

sudo adduser --system --group --home /srv/www/example-one.com wp-example-one
sudo mkdir -p /srv/www/example-one.com/public
sudo chown -R wp-example-one:wp-example-one /srv/www/example-one.com

Keep the document root at the public subdirectory so configuration files and deployment metadata can live outside the web root. Ensure Nginx can traverse the parent directories while the site user owns the WordPress files. Avoid broad, world-writable permissions.

2. Create a database and restricted credentials

sudo mariadb
CREATE DATABASE wp_example_one CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'wp_example_one'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'use-a-long-unique-password';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON wp_example_one.* TO 'wp_example_one'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;

Use a different random password and database name for every site. Grant privileges only on that site’s database; do not reuse a global database user. Store the credentials in a password manager and in your backup documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Create a PHP-FPM pool

Create a pool file for the site, such as /etc/php/8.3/fpm/pool.d/example-one.conf (the path changes with the installed PHP branch):

[example-one]
user = wp-example-one
group = wp-example-one
listen = /run/php/example-one.sock
listen.owner = www-data
listen.group = www-data
pm = ondemand
pm.max_children = 4
pm.process_idle_timeout = 10s
pm.max_requests = 500

The pool user must match the site account. Set pm.max_children from observed memory usage, not a copied number. Smaller sites may need only a few workers; busy sites need more RAM before more workers are added. A separate pool also allows one site to use a different supported PHP version, with its socket changed accordingly.

Validate and reload PHP-FPM after creating the pool. If the service refuses to start, inspect its journal for duplicate pool names, invalid directives, or a socket path that cannot be created.

4. Download WordPress into the document root

Download the current WordPress release from the official project, extract it into the site’s document root, and ensure the site user owns the resulting files. Create wp-config.php with that site’s database name, user, password, host, and unique authentication salts. Never copy a production wp-config.php from another site without changing every database credential and salt.

Configure one Nginx server block per domain

Create a separate server block for each hostname. A minimal HTTP configuration before certificates might look like this:

server {
    listen 80;
    listen [::]:80;
    server_name example-one.com www.example-one.com;
    root /srv/www/example-one.com/public;
    index index.php index.html;

    location / {
        try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;
    }

    location ~ .php$ {
        include snippets/fastcgi-php.conf;
        fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/example-one.sock;
    }

    location ~ /.ht {
        deny all;
    }
}

Check that the root points to the correct site’s directory and that fastcgi_pass points to the matching pool socket. A socket mix-up can make one domain execute another site’s code or produce a 502 error. Test the complete Nginx configuration before reloading:

sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx

Keep each site’s access and error logs identifiable. Separate logs make it possible to see which domain is generating 404s, PHP fatals, or abusive requests without guessing from a combined file.

Point DNS to the VPS and issue HTTPS certificates

DNS checklist

  • Create an A record for each IPv4 address and an AAAA record only when IPv6 is correctly configured and firewalled.
  • Point both the apex domain and any required www hostname at the intended VPS.
  • Wait for DNS propagation and confirm that the hostname resolves to the VPS before requesting a certificate.

Request and renew certificates

Install Certbot and its Nginx integration from your operating system or the current Certbot instructions. Run the Nginx certificate command once per domain (including every hostname you intend to serve), then test that HTTP redirects to HTTPS and that the certificate matches the requested names. Enable the renewal timer and perform a dry run before relying on unattended renewal.

Let’s Encrypt currently permits 50 certificates per registered domain in a seven-day window, shared across all accounts, and up to five certificates per exact identical identifier set in seven days. The refill rate for the registered-domain limit is one certificate every 202 minutes. These limits matter when many subdomains share one registered domain or when scripts repeatedly delete and recreate certificates during testing. Reuse an existing certificate where appropriate, avoid unnecessary reissues, and stage large batches. Check the current rate-limit documentation before automation because limits and renewal treatment can change.

Complete the WordPress installation

  1. Open the HTTPS URL after DNS and Nginx are working.
  2. Choose the site language and enter a unique site title, administrator username, strong password, and recovery email.
  3. Confirm that the installer is using the intended database by checking the values in wp-config.php.
  4. After installation, remove any temporary archives and verify that uploads are writable by the site user without making the entire tree world-writable.
  5. Set the WordPress and site URLs to HTTPS, then test login, media uploads, permalinks, contact forms, scheduled posts, and transactional email.

Repeat the process for every domain rather than cloning a live site’s database and files without a controlled search-and-replace. Cloning can carry administrator accounts, salts, URLs, cron jobs, and private media into the new site.

Security controls that remain necessary

  • Updates: Patch the operating system, Nginx, PHP, database server, WordPress core, themes, and plugins on a schedule. Remove abandoned plugins instead of leaving them inactive.
  • Backups: Keep encrypted, off-server copies of each database and document root. Test restoring one complete site, including uploads, configuration, and database credentials.
  • Permissions: Keep files owned by the site account, restrict configuration files, and avoid blanket 777 permissions. The web server should write only where WordPress genuinely needs to write, such as uploads.
  • Network controls: Expose only required ports, restrict database listening to localhost unless remote administration is explicitly needed, and use key-based SSH access with rate limiting or equivalent controls.
  • Authentication: Require multi-factor authentication for hosting, DNS, and WordPress administrator accounts where supported. Give each person the least privilege needed.
  • Monitoring: Alert on disk exhaustion, memory pressure, failed backups, certificate expiry, repeated authentication failures, and PHP-FPM pool saturation.

How to add another site without creating mistakes

Use a written runbook so every tenant receives the same controls. Before declaring a site live, verify each item:

  5. DNS records resolving to the VPS.
  6. Certificate issued for every required hostname and renewal test completed.
  7. Fresh WordPress salts, administrator credentials, and HTTPS site URLs.
  8. Backup job, restore record, update schedule, and monitoring checks.

Keeping this checklist per site prevents a common failure mode: adding a domain quickly while accidentally pointing it at another site’s root or database.

Troubleshoot the common failures

502 Bad Gateway

Confirm that PHP-FPM is running, the pool loaded without errors, and the Nginx fastcgi_pass socket exactly matches the pool’s listen path. Check socket ownership and the PHP-FPM journal. A full worker pool or exhausted memory can also cause intermittent 502 responses.

403 Forbidden or upload failures

Check execute permission on every parent directory, ownership of the document root, and write permission on wp-content/uploads. Do not solve the issue by making the entire site world-writable.

Wrong site appears

Inspect the request’s DNS answer, Nginx server_name values, document root, and default server selection. Duplicate or overlapping server names can route a domain to the first matching block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Certificate issuance is rejected

Verify DNS, port 80 reachability, and that the requested names resolve to this VPS. If a rate limit was reached, stop repeated attempts, reuse the existing certificate when possible, and wait for the documented refill window.

Server runs out of memory

Identify which PHP-FPM pool, database workload, or background task is consuming RAM. Reduce unnecessary workers, disable resource-heavy jobs, add swap as a safety net (not as a substitute for RAM), enable object caching, or move the busiest site to a larger VPS.

When one VPS is no longer the right boundary

Separate users and pools protect against many accidental and application-level failures, but all sites still share the VPS kernel, storage, host availability, and network connection. Split sites across VPS instances when one client needs independent maintenance windows, a different operating-system lifecycle, stronger performance guarantees, regulatory separation, or a separate recovery domain. Keep the single-VPS model when centralized administration and predictable, modest workloads matter more than that extra boundary.
