Yes—but not by running the public server on a PC behind your home router. Bohemia Interactive’s server documentation says an internet-visible, self-hosted Arma Reforger server requires port forwarding. If your connection is behind CGNAT or DS-Lite, or is IPv6-only, the practical solution is to run a dedicated server on a managed cloud game host. The provider owns the public network endpoint, so your router never has to accept inbound game traffic.

What “without port forwarding” actually means
Port forwarding is a rule on your home router that sends incoming traffic from a public address to a particular device on your private LAN. Without that rule, unsolicited internet packets stop at the router’s NAT boundary. Reforger’s official hosting guidance is explicit: “For a hosted server to be visible from outside the local network (e.g from internet), Port Forwarding must be used.” That requirement applies when the server process is running on your own network.
There are two distinct hosting arrangements:
- Player-hosted (listen) server: the game session runs on a player’s PC. Player hosting is available only on PC.
- Dedicated server: a separate server process handles game information and network synchronization. It can run on a rented machine instead of your gaming PC.
Moving the dedicated process to a provider’s cloud changes where the public endpoint lives. Friends connect to the provider’s address, not to your household connection. That is how managed hosting avoids a home-router rule; it does not make a self-hosted server behind NAT reachable by magic.

If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), multiple customers share one public IPv4 address and you cannot create an inbound mapping on your own router. DS-Lite similarly places IPv4 traffic behind an ISP-managed gateway while your access line may be IPv6-based. Buying a different consumer router does not remove either upstream restriction. An IPv6-only inbound path is not a substitute for Reforger’s documented setup because the game does not support IPv6.
The dependable method: rent a managed Reforger server
A managed host runs the Reforger dedicated server on hardware in its data center. Its firewall and public IP are already on the internet side of the NAT problem. 1. Check the service before ordering
Look for an explicit Arma Reforger product, not a generic virtual server listing that leaves installation and support to you. Verify these items in the provider’s current documentation or control panel:
- Location: Choose a region geographically close to most players. Physical distance and the provider’s peering affect latency; a distant region can make gunfights and vehicle control feel delayed even when the server is healthy.
- Player slots: Confirm the included maximum and whether increasing it changes the monthly charge.
- Version timing: Ask how quickly the provider deploys official Reforger updates and whether you can delay an update until mods are compatible.
- Mods and Workshop support: Check how collections are added, whether the panel validates dependencies, and what happens when a mod author publishes an incompatible revision.
- Crossplay: If PC and console players will share the server, verify that the exact product and configuration support the crossplay arrangement you need.
- Backups and file access: Determine whether scheduled backups, restore points, FTP or another file-management method are included, and whether saved scenarios and configuration files can be downloaded.
- Operations: Confirm that you can start, stop and restart the process, read console logs, change the server name and password, and schedule restarts.
- Network policy: Read the DDoS-protection, firewall and acceptable-use terms. Protection varies by provider and is not a guarantee against every attack.
- Cancellation: Check the billing interval, renewal behavior, refund rules and what happens to your files after cancellation.
No universal monthly price, slot limit or feature set can be stated reliably because providers and plans change. Treat the current provider panel and terms as authoritative for the region and edition you are buying.

2. Create the server in the control panel
- Sign in to the provider’s account dashboard and select the Arma Reforger server product.
- Choose a data-center location. Pick the region that minimizes latency for the majority of your regular players rather than simply choosing the cheapest location.
- Select the player-slot plan. Leave headroom if you expect public players or a growing group; a full server cannot accept another player until someone leaves.
- Provision the instance and wait for the panel to finish installing the game files. Do not assume that a newly created instance is ready until its status changes to running or the console reports a completed startup.
- Open the configuration page and set the server name, password, scenario, maximum players and any provider-specific options.
- Add mods through the panel’s supported Workshop or mod-management workflow. Record the mod identifiers and load order so you can reproduce the setup after a reset.
- Save the configuration, start the server, and watch the console or log view for startup errors. A missing dependency, invalid scenario name or incompatible mod can prevent a clean start.
3. Give players the correct endpoint
Copy the public address and game port displayed by the provider after startup. Have friends open Reforger’s Multiplayer browser and search for the exact server name. Nitrado documents both name-based discovery and direct connection: when the listing does not appear, use the game’s direct-connect IP/port fields with the provider-supplied values.

Likewise, do not tell players to use UDP 2001 unless that is the port the provider actually assigned; managed hosts can expose the game on a different public port and show the authoritative value in their panel.
4. Keep the cloud configuration consistent
Use the provider’s firewall and game-server defaults unless its documentation instructs you to change them. Adding home-router rules cannot improve a server whose public endpoint is in the provider’s data center. If you change the server port, password, scenario or mod list, save the panel configuration and restart the process when required.
Schedule restarts only when they suit your group. A restart can clear a hung process, but it also disconnects every player and may interrupt persistence. Before a Reforger update, back up configuration and saved data if the provider offers that function, then check mod compatibility before allowing the update on a busy community server.
What the official home-host setup requires
You may still prefer to run the server yourself for a private LAN, testing or cost reasons. For internet visibility, Bohemia Interactive’s setup guide instructs home hosts to forward the game port to the local IP address of the hosting PC.

Default and optional ports

Assign the hosting PC a stable local address, then create a router rule that maps UDP 2001 to that address. Forward UDP 17777 only when Steam Query is enabled, and UDP 19999 only when you have deliberately configured RCON. Opening extra ports increases exposure without helping players connect.
This procedure cannot overcome CGNAT, DS-Lite or an IPv6-only service. Your router can forward a packet only after the ISP has delivered it to your home. If the ISP’s gateway owns the public IPv4 address, the upstream NAT still blocks the connection. Ask the ISP whether it can provide a genuine public IPv4 address or a supported bridge/public-address option; if it cannot, use off-site hosting or a private overlay.
Using an overlay VPN or relay for a small private group
An overlay VPN creates a virtual network between participating devices, while a relay service can carry traffic through an intermediary. This can avoid an inbound rule on the home router, but it is not the same as publishing a normal public Reforger server.
Before choosing this route, test the exact Reforger build and network behavior with every participant. Depending on the service, each player may need a client, an account or permission to join the virtual network. The server might be reachable by a virtual address even when it does not appear in the public Multiplayer browser, forcing players to use a direct-connect field if the game accepts that address.

- Use a private access list so an unintended person cannot join the virtual network.
- Measure latency and packet loss at the times your group normally plays; a relay may add a distant hop.
- Keep the overlay client and game version updated together, but avoid upgrading immediately before an event without a test session.
- Document how to remove a participant’s access. Leaving an old virtual-network membership active is a security risk.
Because Bohemia’s canonical hosting pages do not document a supported relay mode for Reforger, treat this as a best-effort solution for a trusted group, not a guaranteed public-server substitute.

Why common “no forwarding” ideas fail
“I will just host and share my normal IP”
Sharing an address does not create an inbound mapping. A router still drops unsolicited traffic unless a forwarding rule exists, and CGNAT means the address may belong to several customers. A cloud server works because the provider controls the public endpoint and firewall.
“A new router will bypass CGNAT”
Your router is downstream from the ISP’s carrier NAT. Replacing it changes local Wi-Fi and firewall features but not the upstream address ownership. Ask the ISP about a public IPv4 service or move the server to a network that already has one.
“IPv6 should solve it”
Reforger does not support IPv6. An IPv6 address on your broadband line therefore cannot replace the documented IPv4/UDP arrangement for an internet-visible server.
“Forward every port listed online”
The documented default is UDP 2001. UDP 17777 and UDP 19999 are optional Steam Query and RCON ports. Forward only the functions you have enabled, and confirm the actual port if a managed provider assigns one for you.
Troubleshooting a cloud-hosted server
The server is running but does not appear in the browser
- Confirm the panel shows the process as running rather than merely provisioned.
- Check the server name spelling and search without restrictive filters.
- Verify that the server is not password-protected in a way that hides it from the listing.
- Confirm the game version and mod set match the current server build.
- Use the provider’s direct-connect IP and port. If direct connection works, the issue is discovery or listing propagation rather than reachability.
Direct connection fails
- Copy the address and port again from the provider panel; do not use your home address.
- Ask the provider whether its firewall permits the game port and whether the instance has finished starting.
- Temporarily test with the default scenario and no mods. A bad mod or dependency can stop the process from accepting players.
- Check whether the server was restarted after a configuration change.
- If every player fails simultaneously, open a provider support ticket with the startup log and timestamp rather than adding random home-router rules.
Players are kicked after joining
Compare the client and server versions, scenario and mod revisions. Workshop items can update independently, so a previously working collection may become incompatible after an author publishes a change. Restore a known-good backup or remove the suspect mod, restart the server and add items back one at a time.
Latency or rubber-banding is severe
Check the selected data-center region first, then test at the same time of day as normal play. A cloud provider’s route, overloaded node or distant relay can affect latency even when your home connection is fast. Moving the instance closer to the player majority is usually more effective than changing local port settings.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a strong, unique server password for private sessions and change it when a former participant should no longer have access.
- Keep the provider account protected with multi-factor authentication where available.
- Grant file or panel access only to administrators who need it.
- Enable backups before major mod changes or game updates, and periodically verify that a restore is possible.
- Apply Reforger updates deliberately; confirm mod compatibility before restarting a populated server.
- Open only the documented game, query or RCON ports that you actually use.
- Review logs for repeated crashes, authentication failures and unexpected restarts.
- Record the server name, public endpoint, scenario, mod identifiers and recovery steps so another administrator can bring it back online.
A practical decision process
- Need a public server and cannot obtain a public IPv4? Choose managed cloud hosting. It removes the home NAT dependency.
- Need a public server and your ISP can provide a public IPv4? Either forward UDP 2001 to a stable home host or compare that ongoing electricity and administration burden with a cloud plan.
- Only a few trusted friends need access? Test an overlay VPN or relay, understanding that everyone may need the client and that public discovery may not work.
- Need crossplay, mods or a large player count? Confirm those capabilities in the provider’s current Reforger plan before purchase; do not infer them from another game offered by the same company.
- Need predictable uptime? Prefer a provider with documented restart controls, backups, update timing and support response commitments, and keep an offline copy of your configuration.
Frequently asked practical questions
Can friends join if I cannot open UDP 2001?
Yes, if the server is hosted on a managed cloud endpoint. Friends use the provider-supplied address and port, or search the configured server name. UDP 2001 is the default for a home-hosted setup, not a universal requirement for every provider-assigned endpoint.
