How to Host an ARK: Survival Evolved Server in 2026

A complete 2026 guide to hosting an ARK: Survival Evolved dedicated server on Windows or Linux, covering SteamCMD installation, ports, firewall rules, backups, automation, updates, capacity and crossplay.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE) dedicated server in 2026 is a Windows or Linux machine running the SteamCMD server files, reachable on the required network ports, and managed with automatic restarts, controlled updates, monitoring and protected save data. You can run it at home, on a virtual private server (VPS), or through a managed game-hosting provider; the right choice depends on your upload capacity, latency, administration time and tolerance for outages.

Choose where the server will run

The software is the same on every platform, but the operating responsibilities differ substantially. Decide this before installing anything because it determines who controls the router, backups, operating-system updates and recovery when the process stops.

Hosting model Monthly cost Bandwidth and latency Port-forwarding control Backups and updates Uptime and process policy
Home computer No universal figure; electricity, hardware and Internet costs depend on your setup. Players near your home usually get the lowest latency. Upload capacity is shared with every other household activity. You control the router and can create forwarding rules, but may face carrier-grade NAT or a changing public IP. You are responsible for save backups, SteamCMD updates, mods, firewall rules and operating-system maintenance. Power cuts, router reboots and sleep settings can stop the server. The computer must remain on and permit a long-running game process.
VPS Varies by provider, region and allocated resources; no single price applies to every map or player count. Choose a region close to most players. The provider supplies an Internet uplink, while your plan’s limits determine usable bandwidth. No home NAT is involved. You configure the VPS firewall and any provider-level network rules. You administer the operating system, SteamCMD, mods, backups and recovery. Snapshot or backup features differ by provider. Usually avoids household power and router interruptions, but you still own service monitoring and must confirm that long-running game processes are allowed.
Managed game hosting Provider-dependent recurring fee; verify the exact plan, renewal price and included resources. Provider location and network design set latency and transfer limits. The provider normally handles edge networking, so you may not receive full port or firewall control. Panels can simplify installs, updates and backups, but retention, restore access, mod support and update timing must be checked in the terms. Maintenance is reduced, not eliminated. Confirm restart behavior, outage support, permitted mods and whether the service allows the server configuration you need.

Home hosting is practical when you have router access, a machine that can stay powered on and enough upstream capacity. A VPS is a better fit when local NAT, power interruptions or household bandwidth are the main risks. Managed hosting trades control for less administration; evaluate its backup policy, geography, uptime commitments and long-running-process rules rather than assuming every provider offers the same service.

Prepare the machine and operating system

Supported systems and basic prerequisites

The ASE dedicated server runs natively on Windows and Linux. Use a stable, supported installation, keep the host awake, and reserve enough disk space for the server files, world saves, logs and mod downloads. Capacity is workload-dependent: map, tick rate, mods, save complexity and connected-player count all change resource use, so a generic CPU or RAM table cannot reliably size every installation.

ARK: Survival Evolved - PlayStation 4
  • Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
  • Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
  • Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
  • Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
  • Use a wired connection where possible, with a stable upstream link.
  • Assign the host a predictable local address. A DHCP reservation is preferable to a manually changed address because router forwarding rules must continue pointing at the same machine.
  • Install operating-system updates and a firewall you understand. Do not disable the firewall globally to make testing easier.
  • Keep administrative access separate from the game process. Run the Linux service as a dedicated account such as steam rather than as root.
  • Plan a backup destination that is not the same disk as the live server.

Install the ASE files with SteamCMD

ASE uses Steam application ID 376030. ARK: Survival Ascended uses a different application ID, 2430930; substituting ASA commands or files in an ASE installation will lead to the wrong server build.

Windows installation

  1. Install SteamCMD from its official distribution and extract it to a permanent tools directory.
  2. Create a server directory such as C:arkserver. Avoid placing live files in a temporary download folder.
  3. Open a command prompt in the SteamCMD directory and run:
force_install_dir <install_dir>
login anonymous
app_update 376030 validate
quit

Replace <install_dir> with the full path you selected. The equivalent one-line shell invocation is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
steamcmd +force_install_dir <install_dir> +login anonymous +app_update 376030 +quit

SteamCMD downloads the dedicated-server files and validates them. Keep the output: download errors, permission failures and disk-full messages must be fixed before you try to launch the game.

Linux installation

  1. Create a dedicated account and a directory such as /home/steam/servers/ark.
  2. Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s supported package or the official SteamCMD files, then ensure the account can write to the server directory.
  3. Run the same command sequence, either interactively or from a shell:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/steam/servers/ark +login anonymous +app_update 376030 +quit

If you use the interactive prompt, the sequence is:

Ark: Survival Evolved Plush - Poop
  • Official ARK: Survival Evolved licensed merchandise, turning one of ARK's best-known running jokes into a plush
  • Approximately 5.1 x 5.1 in (13 x 13 cm) - small enough to sit on a desk or monitor stand
  • Soft filled construction that keeps its shape on a shelf
  • Works as the punchline alongside the rest of an ARK plush collection
  • A gag gift for ARK players and survival game fans
force_install_dir /home/steam/servers/ark
login anonymous
app_update 376030 validate
quit

Do not run updates as one user and launch the server as another unless both users have deliberately aligned ownership and permissions. Mixed ownership is a common cause of failed saves and unreadable logs.

Launch a first session

Start the ShooterGameServer executable with the map and session name you want. The exact executable location differs by operating system; on Linux it is inside the server’s ShooterGame/Binaries/Linux directory, while Windows uses the corresponding Windows binary. A generic launch form is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ShooterGameServer <MapName>?SessionName=<SessionName>

Use a real map name and a session name without shell-special characters that your service manager cannot parse. Watch the console until the world finishes loading, then stop the process cleanly so it can create its normal configuration and save structure.

Open only the required network ports

Players must reach the host through the router and the operating-system firewall. Forwarding a port in the router without allowing it through the host firewall, or allowing it in the firewall without forwarding it, produces the same symptom: the server appears offline to remote players.

Purpose Protocol Default port
Game traffic UDP 7777
Peer and browser traffic UDP 7778
Steam query browser UDP 27015
Remote console (optional RCON) TCP 27020

Forward ports at home

  1. Find the host’s current local address and create a DHCP reservation for it in the router.
  2. Create UDP forwarding rules for 7777, 7778 and 27015 to that address. Add TCP 27020 only if you have enabled and secured RCON.
  3. Create matching inbound rules in Windows Defender Firewall or your Linux firewall. Restrict the rule to the server executable or service where your firewall supports application-based rules.
  4. Check the router’s WAN address. If it is private or shared with other subscribers, carrier-grade NAT may prevent inbound connections; contact the Internet provider or use a host with a public address.
  5. Test from outside the home network, such as a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot. Testing only from the same LAN can succeed even when Internet forwarding is wrong.

ASE does not depend on automatic UPnP forwarding in this workflow, so configure rules manually. Never expose administrative services such as SSH or Windows Remote Desktop to the entire Internet just to make the game reachable.

Run multiple instances

Every instance needs a non-conflicting game, peer and query port set. Increment the selected ports for the second instance and continue with unique values for each additional process. Keep query ports in a range that the Steam browser can discover, record the mapping in a small inventory, and apply the same firewall restrictions to every instance. Two servers listening on the same port cannot both accept traffic, even if they use different maps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect configuration and save data

On its first run, the server creates configuration and world data under ShooterGame/Saved. Treat that directory as the critical asset: it contains the world saves, logs and generated configuration used to reproduce the server.

Editing safely

  • Stop the server before changing files that it may rewrite. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten on shutdown or leave a partially written file.
  • Keep GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini in the generated platform-specific configuration directory beneath ShooterGame/Saved.
  • Change one logical setting group at a time and retain the previous file so you can roll back a bad value.
  • After a change, start the server, inspect the log for parse errors and verify the setting in a controlled test session.

Backups

Make dated copies of the save and configuration directories before every server update, map change or mod change. Store at least one copy away from the live disk and periodically perform a restore test; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Include the date, server instance and software state in the filename so you can identify the correct recovery point.

Automate startup and recovery

A dedicated server should not depend on a terminal window remaining open. Automation should start the process at boot, restart it after an unexpected exit and leave logs available for diagnosis. Automatic restart is not a substitute for monitoring: a process can remain alive while an update, disk or network problem prevents players from joining.

Linux systemd pattern

Create a service unit with paths adjusted to your installation. The following pattern updates the files before launch and restarts the game if it exits:

[Unit]
Description=ARK Survival Evolved server
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
User=steam
WorkingDirectory=/home/steam/servers/ark/ShooterGame/Binaries/Linux
ExecStartPre=/usr/games/steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/steam/servers/ark +login anonymous +app_update 376030 +quit
ExecStart=/home/steam/servers/ark/ShooterGame/Binaries/Linux/ShooterGameServer <MapName>?SessionName=<SessionName>
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=15

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

The SteamCMD path differs by distribution, so replace /usr/games/steamcmd if necessary. Save the unit under the systemd service directory, reload systemd, enable it for boot and start it. Check the service status and journal after the first start. If you operate several instances, give each unit its own working directory, ports and log destination.

Windows scheduled task or service wrapper

Create a task that runs under an account with access to the server directory, starts after the machine boots, and restarts on failure. Point it at a batch file that launches the correct ShooterGameServer executable and records output to a known log directory. Configure a short delay after boot so networking is available, and make sure the task does not launch a second copy while the first process is still shutting down.

Update without losing the world

  1. Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
  2. Copy the current ShooterGame/Saved configuration and save directories to dated backup storage.
  3. Apply the SteamCMD update using app ID 376030:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <install_dir> +login anonymous +app_update 376030 +quit
  1. If you use mods, update them according to their compatibility requirements only after the base server files are healthy.
  2. Start the server and inspect the log for missing files, permission errors, mod failures and save-loading problems.
  3. Join as an administrator or test player, verify the map and settings, and monitor CPU, memory, disk, tick rate and save duration before declaring maintenance complete.

Do not combine an untested game update, a configuration rewrite and several mod changes in one recovery attempt. If the new build fails, stop it, restore the dated backup and investigate one change at a time.

Plan capacity from measurements, not a fixed specification

Bandwidth rises approximately linearly with connected players and is also affected by server tick rate and world-save complexity. The documented planning figure for a VPS is up to about 60 KiB/s per connected player across upstream and downstream. Treat that as an approximation for planning rather than a guarantee: peaks, discovery traffic, mods and other workloads can raise actual use.

There is no universal CPU or RAM requirement that covers every map, mod set and player count. Start with the resources your host offers, then test the intended workload before inviting a full community. Record:

  • CPU utilization and whether one or more cores remain saturated during combat or heavy building.
  • Memory consumption and swap activity over a complete play session.
  • Disk free space, save-file growth and log growth.
  • Tick rate, save duration and pauses visible in the server log.
  • Upstream and downstream throughput, packet loss and latency from representative player locations.

Set alerts for low disk space and repeated restarts. A full disk can prevent saves and SteamCMD updates, turning a routine maintenance event into data recovery.

Understand the ASE and ASA boundary

This procedure is for ARK: Survival Evolved. ARK: Survival Ascended has a separate application ID and different configuration expectations, so do not copy ASA launch guides into an ASE deployment. Keep the game title and app ID in your service name, backup labels and maintenance notes to avoid updating the wrong installation.

For Epic clients joining an ASE server, the cited configuration documentation specifies the -crossplay launch option and -PublicIPForEpic=<IPAddress>. Crossplay behavior is version-sensitive; confirm the current configuration requirements before relying on it, and test with an Epic client after each relevant server update.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Server works on the LAN but not for friends Incorrect forwarding, host firewall or carrier-grade NAT Confirm the reserved local address, UDP rules, matching firewall rules and whether the router has a genuinely public WAN address. Test from an external network.
Server is absent from the Steam browser Query port blocked, wrong query port or stale process Verify UDP 27015 (or your assigned query port), ensure no other instance uses it, restart the server and inspect the launch log.
Players connect, then time out Game or peer port blocked, saturated upload or unstable route Check UDP 7777 and 7778, monitor upstream utilization and packet loss, and compare results from more than one player location.
Server starts with default settings Edited the wrong file, incorrect path or permissions Stop the process, locate the generated files under ShooterGame/Saved, confirm the service account can read them, and review the startup log.
Update fails or the service loops on restart Disk space, permissions, SteamCMD failure or a bad mod Run SteamCMD manually, read its error output, check ownership and free space, then disable or roll back the latest mod change using the dated backup.
World rollback or missing progress Save interruption, failed backup or restoring the wrong instance Stop the server, preserve the current directory for analysis, identify the newest verified backup and restore only after confirming its date and instance.
Two servers interfere with each other Port collision or shared working/configuration paths Assign unique game, peer and query ports and separate service working directories before starting both processes.

A practical operating checklist

  • Record the installation path, service account, map, session name and every assigned port.
  • Reserve the host’s local address and document router and firewall rules.
  • Keep ShooterGame/Saved backed up before updates, mod changes and configuration edits.
  • Automate boot startup and failure recovery, then verify that the automation actually launches one process.
  • Review logs after every update and watch disk, memory, CPU, tick rate, save duration and network saturation during play.
  • Test remote connectivity from outside the hosting network and test restoration from a backup.
  • For crossplay, validate the current ASE flags and client behavior rather than assuming settings from another ARK edition.

Following this sequence gives you a repeatable ASE service instead of a one-time launch: install the correct app, expose only the required traffic, preserve the generated data, automate routine operations and use measured workload results to decide when the host needs more capacity.
