Yes. OpenMod and RocketMod can run side by side on the same Unturned server. OpenMod detects RocketMod and applies compatibility patches, while Unturned’s official documentation describes integration with existing Rocket plugins through RocketMod and LDM. You do not have to choose one framework immediately. However, side-by-side support does not make every Rocket plugin a native OpenMod plugin: each plugin, dependency, configuration file, permission, economy service and Unturned-version combination still needs testing.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Unturned servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What compatibility actually means
Compatibility here means framework coexistence and integration. An installation can load OpenMod and RocketMod together, allowing an operator to retain Rocket plugins while adding OpenMod plugins. OpenMod’s integration documentation says it detects RocketMod automatically and patches the server at runtime. Smartly Dressed Games likewise documents OpenMod as an option that can be installed alongside RocketMod and can work with existing Rocket plugins through RocketMod and LDM.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThat is different from saying that a Rocket plugin can be copied into an OpenMod plugins folder and will become an OpenMod plugin. Rocket and OpenMod expose different APIs, use different plugin lifecycles, and may store settings or data differently. A plugin can also depend on a specific RocketMod module, an older Unturned build, a particular permissions provider or an economy implementation. Compatibility must therefore be checked plugin by plugin.
Can you run both frameworks together?
What side-by-side support provides
- RocketMod remains available for Rocket plugins that your server still needs.
- OpenMod can load its own plugins without requiring you to remove RocketMod first.
- OpenMod can apply integration patches when it detects RocketMod.
- Shared services such as permissions and economy can be linked or isolated, depending on your configuration.
This arrangement is useful for a gradual migration. You can replace or add functionality over time instead of taking every plugin offline for a single conversion. It also lets you keep a mature Rocket plugin temporarily while evaluating an OpenMod alternative.

What it does not guarantee
- A Rocket plugin is not automatically converted into an OpenMod plugin.
- Every plugin combination has not been covered by a single, authoritative compatibility matrix.
- A plugin that loads may still fail at runtime because of a missing dependency, obsolete API call, configuration mismatch or conflicting command, event hook or data store.
- Successful startup does not prove that permissions, economy balances, scheduled tasks or persistent player data behave correctly.
How permissions and economy are shared
OpenMod’s integration settings provide three choices for permissions: RocketMod, OpenMod and Separate. The documented default is RocketMod. Economy follows the same pattern, with RocketMod_Uconomy as the documented default, OpenMod_Uconomy as an alternative, and Separate as an isolated mode.
| Service | Available mode | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Permissions | RocketMod | OpenMod uses the RocketMod permission system, allowing both frameworks to refer to the same permission data where supported. |
| Permissions | OpenMod | OpenMod is the authority for OpenMod permission checks; Rocket plugins still need to support whatever bridge or provider they expect. |
| Permissions | Separate | Each framework keeps its own permission state. A role or group granted in one system may not exist in the other. |
| Economy | RocketMod_Uconomy | OpenMod integrates with the RocketMod economy provider documented for the setup. |
| Economy | OpenMod_Uconomy | OpenMod uses its economy provider instead of the RocketMod provider. |
| Economy | Separate | Frameworks maintain independent balances or providers, which can produce different balances for the same player. |
These options require RocketMod to be installed as a separate module. The legacy RocketMod Bridge does not expose the advanced integration settings described above. Decide which framework owns each service before production use, document that decision, and test commands such as granting a group, checking a balance and charging a player from both plugin types.
Installing OpenMod on an existing RocketMod server
The official Unturned documentation describes an installer route intended for a RocketMod installation. Use a backup or staging copy first; do not treat the installer as a substitute for a rollback plan.

- Back up the server. Stop Unturned and copy the server files, RocketMod configuration, OpenMod configuration, plugin folders, permission files, economy data and any database used by plugins. Keep the backup outside the live server directory.
- Check prerequisites. Confirm that your Unturned build, RocketMod installation and required plugins are supported by the OpenMod release you intend to use. Record the current startup arguments and module list.
- Obtain the OpenMod Installer Plugin for RocketMod. Place the installer plugin in
/Rocket/Plugins, exactly as documented for the installer release. - Restart the server. Watch the console for the installer to load and for errors. A clean process start is not enough; keep the complete log for later comparison.
- Run the installation command. From the server console or an administrator account, run
/openmod install. Allow the installer to add the OpenMod files and integration components. - Stop and start again if requested. Verify that both framework modules load, then inspect plugin logs for dependency, API or configuration errors.
- Choose integration ownership. Set permissions and economy to RocketMod, OpenMod or Separate. Confirm that the selected providers are installed and that the setting is not relying on the legacy bridge.
- Validate before opening the server. Test player login, commands, permissions, economy transactions, scheduled jobs, teleportation, kits, moderation actions and any other functions provided by essential plugins.
The installer documentation lists optional flags including --no-permission-link, --no-uconomy-link, --no-migration and --no-extras. These flags let an operator avoid particular linking, migration or extra-installation actions. Use them only when you understand the resulting state; disabling a link can leave Rocket and OpenMod services intentionally separate.
Migrating from RocketMod to OpenMod
Gradual migration
For most established servers, a staged migration is safer than removing RocketMod in one maintenance window. Inventory every plugin and classify it as Rocket-only, OpenMod-only, compatible through integration, replaceable, or no longer required. Migrate one function at a time, beginning with non-critical utilities. Keep RocketMod installed until the replacement has passed player and administrator tests.
Data and service migration
Permissions and economy deserve separate verification because a plugin can appear healthy while reading an empty or different data store. Compare representative player groups, individual overrides, balances, shops, prices and transaction logs before and after migration. If a plugin stores data in its own file or database, confirm whether the OpenMod version uses the same format; never assume that matching plugin names imply matching data.

Rollback
The installer documentation states that /openmod uninstall reverts to RocketMod. Treat this as one part of recovery, not as your only backup. Test the uninstall path on a copy, retain the original RocketMod files and database, and record the exact configuration changes made during installation. If rollback is required, stop the server, restore the known-good backup when necessary, and verify player data before reopening it.
How to check a Rocket plugin before relying on it
- Identify its target. Confirm whether the plugin is written for RocketMod, OpenMod or both, and list every required module and library.
- Check maintenance status. Look for a release or update that supports the Unturned build you run. An old plugin may load only until an API or asset change is exercised.
- Install on a clone. Use a copy of the server with production player access disabled. Never test an unverified plugin against the only copy of live data.
- Read startup logs. Resolve missing assemblies, duplicate commands, permission-provider errors and configuration parse failures before testing gameplay.
- Exercise real workflows. Test login, reload, shutdown, reconnect, permission denial and grant paths, economy deposits and withdrawals, scheduled jobs, persistence after restart, and interactions with other plugins.
- Test failure behavior. Temporarily remove a dependency or use an unprivileged account to confirm that the plugin fails safely and does not grant unintended access or duplicate transactions.
- Document the result. Record the plugin version, Unturned build, dependencies, configuration changes and test outcome so a future update can be compared against a known state.
Common problems and practical fixes
A Rocket plugin does not load
Check that RocketMod itself is installed as a module, that the plugin is in the Rocket plugin directory, and that every dependency matches the current Unturned build. Read the first error in the log rather than only the final shutdown message. If the plugin targets an obsolete API, look for a maintained version or an OpenMod replacement; side-by-side support cannot repair incompatible plugin code.
Commands work for one framework but not the other
This usually indicates separate permission providers, different group names or a plugin that does not use the selected integration. Verify the active permissions mode, inspect the exact permission strings and test with a new account. Avoid creating duplicate groups until you know which provider each plugin queries.

Balances differ after linking economy
Stop transactions, back up both data stores and determine which provider is authoritative. Compare a small set of known accounts and transaction records. Do not repeatedly toggle between providers on a live server, because deposits or withdrawals can be duplicated. Select one documented mode, migrate data deliberately if required, and retest after a restart.
The server starts but gameplay is unstable
Disable non-essential plugins in batches, then re-enable them one at a time. Watch for duplicate event handlers, overlapping commands, scheduled tasks that run twice, or plugins that assume exclusive control of a service. A clean startup log does not rule out conflicts that appear only when a player joins or a command is executed.

| Your essential plugin set still includes Rocket-only plugins. | Every required function has a tested OpenMod equivalent. |
| You need a gradual transition with a reversible change set. | Maintaining two plugin ecosystems creates avoidable update and troubleshooting work. |
| You can clearly define which framework owns permissions and economy. | You have verified data conversion, permissions, economy and rollback on a staging copy. |
| Your current Unturned build is supported by both frameworks and their plugins. | Rocket plugins are unmaintained, conflict with current APIs or block required updates. |
Make the decision from your required plugin coverage, shared-service design, maintenance status and migration risk—not from the fact that both frameworks can technically start. A small server with a few stable plugins may find coexistence simplest; a large server with overlapping permissions, economy and moderation systems may benefit from one clearly owned stack.

The OpenMod installer repository was archived on June 27, 2024. Because an archived installer may not track later Unturned or framework changes, verify its release and game-version compatibility before using it on a current production server.

OpenMod and RocketMod are compatible on an Unturned server and can run together. OpenMod’s RocketMod detection and Unturned’s documented integration make a staged migration practical, while permissions and economy can be linked to either framework or kept separate. Compatibility remains conditional at the plugin level, so back up the server, test every essential plugin and shared service on a staging copy, and keep a verified rollback path before changing a live installation.
