How to Host a TerraFirmaGreg Server

A practical TerraFirmaGreg-Modern server guide covering the official server pack, Java 17+, manual and Docker deployment, ports, RAM, backups, updates, and troubleshooting.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Host TerraFirmaGreg-Modern by downloading the matching server pack from the project’s official GitHub release, running it with Java 17 or newer, and giving the instance at least the pack’s reported 6–8 GB starting allocation. You can launch the supplied script on a dedicated machine, deploy the pack’s Docker configuration with persistent data and backups, or choose managed hosting. Keep the server and every player on the identical pack release, open TCP port 25565 (and UDP 24454 only when Simple Voice Chat is enabled), and back up the world before every update.

What TerraFirmaGreg is and what a server needs

TerraFirmaGreg-Modern is a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge modpack that combines TerraFirmaCraft’s survival systems with GregTech’s long technology progression. CurseForge describes it as a “deep survival and tech modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1, seamlessly fusing together TerraFirmaCraft and GregTech.” The project page recorded 1,694,730 downloads and an update dated October 6, 2026, but release information changes frequently.

A server runs the same Forge/mod files as the players’ clients, plus a world directory and configuration. Every player therefore needs a legitimate Minecraft Java Edition account and the exact TerraFirmaGreg release installed through the launcher or instance manager they use. A Bedrock-only client cannot join a Forge Java server.

  • Operating system: Linux, Windows, or another system supported by the supplied scripts and Java runtime.
  • Java: Java 17 or newer. The project documentation identifies Java 17+ as the requirement for Forge and Pakku; the reviewed 1.20.1 server build is tied to Java 17.
  • Storage: enough room for the server pack, generated chunks, logs, and multiple world backups. TerraFirmaCraft exploration and GregTech automation can make a world grow quickly.
  • Network: TCP 25565 for normal Minecraft connections. UDP 24454 is used by Simple Voice Chat only when that feature is installed and configured.
  • Memory: the supplied Linux launcher defaults to about 6 GB, while the reviewed Docker configuration sets 8 GB. These are configuration figures, not performance benchmarks.

Choose a release before creating the server

Do not build a server from a random client profile or from an old ZIP found in a forum post. The official wiki and the CurseForge project page direct administrators to the TerraFirmaGreg GitHub releases for the server pack.

Stable release or pre-release?

Use a full, stable release when the world must remain available. The release information used for this guide identified 0.13.10 as the latest full release discussed there, while 0.13.11 and 0.13.12 were shown as pre-releases at that page’s update. Those labels may have changed; check the current GitHub release list immediately before downloading and record the exact version in your server notes.

Never assume that a newer client can connect to an older server. A release change can alter mods, configs, scripts, world-generation behavior, or Forge requirements. Treat the version number as part of the server address information you give to players.

Download the official server pack

  1. Open the TerraFirmaGreg project’s official GitHub releases page through the link provided by its wiki or CurseForge page.
  2. Select the release you intend to run and download its server-pack archive, not merely the client profile.
  3. Create a new, empty directory dedicated to that instance, such as terrafirmagreg-server-0.13.10.
  4. Extract the archive into that directory. Keep it separate from any existing installation; the wiki specifically recommends a new folder when changing versions.
  5. Read the release notes and inspect the included scripts, configuration files, and any Docker file before the first launch.

The server pack is the authoritative source for its mods and configuration. Copying a client’s mods folder into a vanilla Forge server can omit server scripts, permissions, or required settings.

Install and verify Java 17

Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime (or a newer Java version explicitly supported by the current pack) on the machine that will run the server. A Java Development Kit is acceptable, although the server only needs a working runtime to launch.

Check the runtime before starting

Open a terminal or Command Prompt in the server directory and run:

java -version

The output should identify major version 17 or higher. If it reports Java 8, 11, or an unexpected installation, fix the system PATH or use the full path to the intended Java executable in the supplied start script. Running the wrong Java is a common cause of Forge startup errors that look like mod problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows considerations

Install a current 64-bit Java 17 distribution, then reopen Command Prompt so the updated PATH is loaded. In the server folder, use the included Windows start script rather than double-clicking a JAR. If Windows opens the file in an archive utility or closes the console immediately, launch the script from Command Prompt so the error remains visible.

Linux considerations

Install Java 17 from your distribution’s package repository, verify it with java -version, and make the supplied shell script executable if necessary:

chmod +x <start-script>.sh
./<start-script>.sh

Use the actual filename shipped in the pack; do not rename scripts until you understand their variables and memory flags.

Manual installation with the supplied start script

Manual hosting is the most transparent option: all files, JVM flags, logs, and backups remain under your control. It also makes you responsible for patching the operating system, forwarding ports, and keeping the machine online.

  1. Prepare the directory. Use the empty folder containing the extracted server pack. Do not place it inside a client’s instance directory or overwrite another release.
  2. Inspect the launcher. Open the supplied Windows or Linux script in a text editor. Confirm the Java command, memory allocation, working directory, and any Forge or Pakku arguments. The reviewed Linux script defaulted to roughly 6 GB; increase it only when the host has sufficient unused RAM.
  3. Run the script once. The first launch installs or prepares Forge components and then starts the world. Accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated configuration when prompted and only after reading its terms.
  4. Wait for a ready state. Watch the console until it reports that the server has finished loading and is listening. The first world generation can take substantially longer than later restarts.
  5. Stop cleanly. Use the console’s stop command, or the script’s documented shutdown method. Do not kill the process while chunks or region files are being written.
  6. Start again and test locally. Join from the host machine or a client on the same network before exposing the service to the internet. Confirm that the correct world, mods, permissions, and Forge version loaded.

Where the world and server files are

The world is created inside the server-pack directory, in the world or saves location defined by the pack’s configuration. The official update guidance calls out saves, optional backups, and server-specific files such as the whitelist as items to preserve. Before moving or deleting anything, stop the server and identify the actual folders shown by your installation rather than assuming a client-style path.

Set an administrator and whitelist

After the first successful start, use the server console to grant operator permissions only to trusted accounts and enable a whitelist if the world is private. Keep the whitelist file with your backups; it is one of the server-specific files the project’s update instructions recommend carrying forward.

Docker deployment for repeatable hosting

Docker is useful when you want an isolated, reproducible deployment and clear data mounts. The reviewed route uses the pack’s Docker file with the itzg/minecraft-server image, Forge 47.4.13, Minecraft 1.20.1, a persistent ./data directory, a persistent ./backups directory, and an 8 GB memory setting. Verify every value against the release you downloaded; Forge and image defaults can change.

Prepare the compose directory

  1. Install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin on a supported host.
  2. Create an empty directory separate from any manual server installation.
  3. Copy the server pack’s current Docker file or compose example into that directory. Prefer the file shipped with the release over an older tutorial.
  4. Ensure the bind-mounted directories exist and are writable by the container process.

Representative compose settings

The following reflects the reviewed configuration’s values. It is a reference for checking the release file, not a promise that every future release uses identical variable names:

      - ./backups:/backups

Do not blindly paste this block over the pack’s supplied file. Confirm the release’s Forge build, startup variables, modpack installation method, and filename. The 8 GB value is a starting allocation for a small world, not a measured guarantee.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Start, inspect, and stop the container

  1. Save the verified compose file in the empty directory.
  2. Run docker compose up -d.
  3. Follow startup output with docker compose logs -f and wait for the ready message.
  4. Check that files are appearing under ./data and that backups are written under ./backups.
  5. Stop cleanly with docker compose stop; bring it back with docker compose up -d.

Persistent mounts are essential. If the world exists only inside a disposable container layer, recreating the container can destroy it. Back up the host directories, not just the container definition.

Networking: ports, firewalls, and player access

Required Minecraft port

Forward TCP 25565 from the internet-facing router to the host running the server, and allow that port through the host firewall. Players connect to the public IP address or DNS name and the port you publish. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; you may need a publicly reachable host or a network overlay that all players can use.

Optional voice-chat port

The reviewed Docker configuration maps UDP 24454 for Simple Voice Chat. Expose and forward that UDP port only if the server and clients actually use the voice-chat mod and its configuration expects that port. Opening it when the feature is disabled adds attack surface without helping connections.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test from outside your LAN

Local clients can sometimes connect through a router’s internal address even when internet access is broken. Test with a player on a different network, verify both TCP and (if enabled) UDP forwarding, and check the host firewall before changing mod files. Never publish the server console or remote administration port directly to the internet.

How much RAM and CPU to allocate

The available figures are starting settings: approximately 6 GB in the reviewed Linux script, 8 GB in the reviewed Docker file, and 8–12 GB advertised by hosting pages cited in the guide. No controlled performance benchmark establishes a universal requirement.

Workload Practical starting point What to watch
One or two players, new world About 6–8 GB, matching the supplied script or Docker default Startup time, garbage-collection pauses, and heap usage while exploring
Several players or active exploration Start at 8 GB and increase only if monitoring shows pressure Tick-time spikes when new chunks generate and when players travel apart
Large GregTech factories, Create contraptions, or many loaded chunks Budget more than the defaults, subject to the host’s total RAM Persistent high heap use, stuttering, and CPU saturation during automation

Leave RAM for the operating system, Docker, filesystem cache, and other services. Giving the JVM nearly all host memory can cause swapping, which is usually worse than a smaller but stable heap. Increase memory in measured steps, restart, and compare logs and tick performance rather than assuming that more RAM fixes every lag source. CPU speed matters during world generation and heavily automated recipes; additional cores help the host run other tasks but do not eliminate a single overloaded server tick.

Make every client match the server

The official wiki requires players to use the same version as the server. A “missing mods” or “mod mismatch” message often means a client update did not complete correctly, rather than that the server is missing a file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Give players the exact release number and launcher profile to install.
  • Have them fully close the launcher, update the instance, and confirm the mod list before reconnecting.
  • Do not mix a pre-release client with a full-release server, or vice versa.
  • When troubleshooting, compare the client’s Forge version, pack version, and configuration files with the server’s release contents.

Updating without losing the world

An update is a migration, not a file replacement. The official wiki recommends copying the world’s saves, optional backups, and server-specific files such as the whitelist into a new server-pack folder. The reviewed guide also advises reading release notes, handling mod and config replacements carefully, and booting the new instance before players return.

  1. Announce downtime and stop the old server cleanly.
  2. Make a dated, restorable backup of the entire current instance, including the world, saves, backups, whitelist, permissions, and any custom configuration.
  3. Download and extract the target server pack into a new directory. Keep the old directory untouched.
  4. Read the target release notes for migrations, removed mods, changed Forge versions, or required config edits.
  5. Copy the world and server-specific files into the corresponding locations in the new directory. Do not overwrite new default configs blindly; merge only settings you understand.
  6. Start the new instance with no players connected. Examine the console for missing dependencies, registry errors, or world-conversion messages.
  7. Join as an administrator, inspect important bases and machines, and verify backups, whitelist behavior, and ports.
  8. Only after the test succeeds, invite players back. Retain the old installation until the new world has been played and backed up successfully.

If the new release fails, stop it, restore the untouched old directory, and use the backup rather than repeatedly launching a damaged world. Never downgrade a world after it has been opened by a newer release without following that release’s documented rollback procedure.

Self-hosting, Docker, or managed hosting?

Factor Manual self-hosting Docker on your machine Managed hosting
Upfront and recurring cost Uses an existing computer but adds electricity and possible hardware costs Uses an existing computer; Docker itself does not replace electricity or hardware Recurring provider fee; current prices vary by region, plan, and promotions
File and JVM control Maximum control over scripts, mods, configs, and JVM flags High control through mounted files and environment variables, with container boundaries Control depends on the provider’s panel and policy
Setup and updates Extract packs, edit scripts, patch the OS, and perform migrations yourself Repeatable definitions simplify rebuilds, but images and mounts still need maintenance Panel or one-click workflows reduce setup, while provider-specific update rules apply
RAM and CPU headroom Limited by the host’s unused resources Limited by the host; container limits must not be set below the JVM need Choose a plan with enough guaranteed resources; advertised RAM is not a benchmark
Backups You design and verify file or snapshot backups Bind-mounted data and backups directories are easy to copy, but still need an off-host copy May include scheduled backups, retention limits, and extra fees; verify before buying
Networking Router forwarding and firewall configuration are your responsibility Still requires host firewall and router forwarding, plus Docker port mappings Usually supplies a public address; panel firewall and port policies still matter
Uptime Depends on household power, internet, hardware, and your maintenance schedule Depends on the same host, although restart policies can recover a crashed container Designed for data-center availability, subject to the provider’s service terms
Support Community documentation and your own troubleshooting Docker and pack documentation, with you responsible for the integration Provider support may help with the panel or machine, not every modpack error

Choose manual hosting when

  • You have a machine that can stay on and you want unrestricted access to scripts, logs, and JVM flags.
  • You are comfortable forwarding ports, applying operating-system updates, and maintaining independent backups.

Choose Docker when

  • You want the server definition, persistent mounts, and restart behavior documented in one compose file.
  • You may recreate the host and need a repeatable deployment, while still retaining administrative control.

Choose managed hosting when

  • No suitable machine can remain online, your home network cannot accept inbound connections, or you need a provider to handle the base system.
  • You have confirmed that the current plan supports TerraFirmaGreg-Modern’s Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge build, Java requirement, required RAM, custom server-pack files, backups, locations, and any extra ports.

One-click labels are not proof of compatibility. Ask for the exact Forge build, Java version, memory allocation, backup retention, file access, and migration procedure before moving an established world.

Troubleshoot in the order that eliminates the most causes

The process exits immediately

  • Run java -version; Java 17 or newer is required.
  • Launch the supplied script from a terminal so the complete error remains visible.
  • Confirm that you extracted the server pack fully and are running from its directory.
  • Check the first and last error in the log rather than treating every cascading message as a separate failure.

Players receive a mod-mismatch error

  • Compare the server release, Minecraft 1.20.1 version, Forge build, and mod list with the client.
  • Have the affected player force the launcher to finish its update and restart it.
  • Remove only a corrupted client instance and reinstall the exact release; do not delete the server world.

The server is unreachable

  • Confirm that the server reached its ready state and is listening on TCP 25565.
  • Check the host firewall, router forwarding, public address, and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT.
  • Test from an external network. A local connection alone does not prove internet forwarding works.
  • If voice chat fails while Minecraft works, check UDP 24454 and the Simple Voice Chat configuration separately.

Lag increases as the world grows

  • Watch heap usage and server tick-time messages while players explore and machines run.
  • Check CPU saturation and disk space; adding RAM cannot repair a saturated CPU, slow storage, or runaway chunk loading.
  • Reduce unnecessary permanently loaded chunks and contraptions before raising the memory allocation.
  • Increase the JVM heap in small steps, leaving headroom for the operating system and Docker.

A world appears missing after a move

  • Stop the server and inspect the new instance’s configured world location.
  • Verify that the correct saves or world directory was copied, not just the launcher files.
  • Restore from the dated backup if the migration was incomplete; do not keep launching until the wrong directory becomes the active world.

A reliable first-day checklist

  • Record the exact TerraFirmaGreg release and Forge version.
  • Download the official server pack from the project’s GitHub release linked by its documentation.
  • Extract it into a new, server-only directory.
  • Verify Java 17 or newer with java -version.
  • Inspect the supplied script or Docker file and confirm its memory setting.
  • Start once, accept the EULA as required, and wait for a ready state.
  • Set an administrator, configure the whitelist, and test the world locally.
  • Open TCP 25565; add UDP 24454 only for enabled Simple Voice Chat.
  • Test from outside the local network.
  • Give every player the exact release and require a completed client update.
  • Schedule file backups and test restoring one before inviting a large group.

Bottom line

For most administrators, the safest path is the official server pack in a fresh directory, Java 17 or newer, and an initial 8 GB allocation that you adjust from observed heap, CPU, and tick behavior. Manual scripts provide the clearest control; Docker adds repeatability through persistent data and backups mounts; managed hosting trades some control for an always-on machine and provider support. Whichever route you choose, matching releases and tested backups matter more than a particular hosting method.
