To set up RAT (Remote Administration Tool) for a 7 Days to Die server, install RAT and its required Bad Company Server Manager mod, enable Telnet or Webconsole in the server’s serverconfig.xml, then enter the same connection method, port and password in RAT. What RAT does
RAT is an administration layer for a running 7 Days to Die dedicated server. Instead of managing every task through a console window, you can use it to control server settings and automate routine operations. NomadSoft’s documentation describes functions including automatic startup, automatic restart, RAM monitoring, scheduled ZIP backups, restore workflows and server-setting management. Update notes also describe a message of the day (MOTD), timed server messages, custom commands, automatic configuration writing, and console and chat log controls.

The connection succeeds only when the interface, port and password in RAT exactly match the values configured for the server.
Decide where RAT will run
RAT can run on the same Windows computer as the game server or on a different machine. This choice determines the address you enter, the firewall rules you need and how much control you retain over the host.

Remote administration is supported, but the RAT documentation warns that some features cannot work when the game server is remotely hosted. Confirm the features you require with the current RAT documentation and your host before moving the manager off the server machine.
Check requirements before installing
Required software components
- A functioning 7 Days to Die dedicated server with access to its
serverconfig.xml. - RAT installed on the computer that will administer the server.
- The Bad Company Server Manager mod by StompyNZ. RAT documentation states that this mod is required for RAT to work.
- Alloc’s Server Fixes. The official 7 Days to Die server wiki strongly recommends installing it before setting up a server manager, and RAT-related functions such as the web map and player private messages depend on it.
Install the dependency versions appropriate to your server build. The available documentation does not provide a complete, current compatibility matrix, so do not assume that a particular RAT release, game build or mod version is compatible without checking the current RAT release notes and the mod documentation.
Windows hardware baseline
The 7 Days to Die Help Center lists the following Windows baselines in its 2026 requirements information. A dedicated server can use more RAM and heavier CPU resources than a client running the game, especially with several players, large worlds or mods.

These are the Help Center’s general Windows figures, not a guaranteed capacity for a particular player count or mod pack. Leave headroom for the operating system, RAT, backups and temporary files. If the machine repeatedly approaches its memory limit, use RAT’s RAM-threshold restart feature only as a recovery measure and investigate the underlying load.

Install RAT and its server-side dependency
- Install the 7 Days to Die dedicated server and start it once so that it creates its normal configuration and save directories.
- Stop the server before editing configuration files or copying mods.
- Install the Bad Company Server Manager mod in the server’s normal mod location, following that mod’s current installation instructions.
- Install Alloc’s Server Fixes if you need RAT functions that rely on it, including the web map or private player messages. The official server wiki specifically recommends this mod before installing a server manager.
- Install RAT on the administration computer. If RAT and the server are on different machines, install RAT only where you want to operate it; the server-side Bad Company component still belongs with the game server.
- Start the game server once more and inspect its startup output for mod-loading errors. Stop it again before changing the administration settings.
If the server fails to start after adding a mod, remove or correct the last change before attempting RAT connection. RAT cannot repair a game server that never reaches a running state.
Enable Telnet or Webconsole in serverconfig.xml
The administration interface must be enabled in the game server’s configuration. Open the server’s serverconfig.xml with a text editor while the server is stopped. Find the Telnet or Webconsole settings supplied by your server configuration and enable one method. Set a port and a non-empty password.

Do not invent a second set of credentials in RAT. RAT must use the same method, port and password that the game server actually loaded. Save the file, close the editor and start the server so it reads the new values.
Choose Telnet or Webconsole
- Telnet: Select this when your RAT version and server setup are intended to communicate through the Telnet administration interface.
- Webconsole: Select this when you have enabled the server’s web-based console and RAT documentation for your release specifies Webconsole.
Use only one connection method initially. Once a basic connection works, you can test other interfaces if your release supports them. The port number is not universal: choose a free port appropriate for your host, then use that exact number in RAT and in any firewall or routing rule.

Protect the administration endpoint
- Use a strong, unique administration password rather than a password reused for a player account.
- For a local installation, prefer
127.0.0.1so the administration interface is not exposed to the network. - For remote operation, restrict firewall access to the administrator’s trusted address range where possible. Exposing a management port to the entire internet increases attack surface.
- Record the selected method, port and password in a secure password manager. Do not place the password in screenshots, public documentation or chat.
Connect RAT to the server
- Start the game server and wait until it has completed startup. A server that is still loading the world may reject or drop an administration connection.
- Start RAT.
- Choose the same connection method you enabled in
serverconfig.xml: Telnet or Webconsole. - Enter the server address. Use
127.0.0.1when RAT and the game server are on the same computer. For a remote installation, enter the server machine’s externally reachable address, or its reachable local address when both machines are on the same private network. - Enter the identical port number and password from
serverconfig.xml. - Enable RAT’s auto-reconnect option. This allows it to try again after a temporary server restart or network interruption.
- Press Connect and watch the connection status and log.
A successful connection should allow RAT to issue administration actions and display server information. Test a harmless read-only action first, such as viewing status or current settings, before scheduling restarts or issuing commands.
Configure automatic operation after the first connection
Do these changes one at a time and observe the server after each one. Automation is useful only when the server can recover predictably.

Configure RAT to start the game server when the manager launches if your deployment requires unattended operation. Test this after a planned shutdown, not during an active player session. Verify that the server reaches a ready state before allowing players to join.
Automatic restart
Set a restart schedule that fits your community’s play pattern. Announce planned restarts with the MOTD or timed messages so players can leave safely. Avoid overlapping an automatic restart with a backup, update or restore operation.

RAM-threshold restart
RAT can monitor memory use and restart when a configured threshold is reached. Treat this as a safeguard, not as a substitute for diagnosing a leak, an oversized world or an incompatible mod. Set a threshold that leaves enough memory for a clean shutdown and startup; a threshold that allows the operating system to run out of memory may prevent recovery.
Messages, MOTD and commands
- Write an MOTD that tells players where to find rules, restart notices and maintenance information.
- Use timed server messages for recurring notices such as an upcoming restart or backup window.
- Add custom commands only after testing them manually. A typo in an automated command can affect every player or fail silently.
Console and chat logs
Enable console and chat logging when you need an audit trail for errors, moderation or troubleshooting. Decide how long to retain logs and protect them if they contain player names, messages or administration details. Confirm that the log directory has enough storage and that old files are rotated or archived.

Set up backups and restores
RAT documents scheduled ZIP backups and restore workflows. Configure backups only after identifying the actual save location and confirming that the RAT process has permission to write there.
- Choose a backup schedule that captures the world before high-risk events such as updates, wipes or major configuration changes.
- Choose a destination with enough free space. A backup stored on the same physical disk as the live world is convenient, but it does not protect against disk failure.
- Set a retention policy so old ZIP files do not consume the server’s entire storage volume.
- Run one manual backup and open the ZIP to confirm that it contains the expected save data and configuration files.
- Document the restore procedure and test it on a copy or separate instance before you need it during an outage.
- When restoring, stop the game server first, preserve the current files, extract the selected backup to the correct location and start the server only after verifying permissions and paths.
A restore can roll back player progress. Tell players which backup date is being used and keep the pre-restore files until the recovered world has been checked.
Local versus hosted operation
Hosting the game server on a provider is a supported deployment route for 7 Days to Die. Hosting documentation covers server configuration, administrator permissions, saves, wipes and mod updates. The trade-off is that the provider may control the operating system, firewall, patch schedule and recovery process.

Before choosing remote hosting, ask whether the provider permits the Bad Company Server Manager mod, exposes the required Telnet or Webconsole interface, allows your chosen port and provides access to saves and backups. If any answer is no, the RAT feature set may be reduced.
Troubleshoot a failed connection
RAT reports a timeout or refuses the connection
- Confirm the game server is running and has finished loading.
- Confirm RAT uses the same method, port and password as
serverconfig.xml. - On a local installation, replace a machine name or public address with
127.0.0.1. - For a remote installation, verify that the address is reachable from the RAT computer and that the administration port is allowed by the server firewall and any provider firewall.
- Check that another service is not already using the selected port.
- Restart the game server after editing
serverconfig.xml; changing the file while it is running does not necessarily change the active listener.
Authentication fails
Re-enter the password manually and check for leading spaces, capitalization and characters that may have been altered by the editor. If you changed the password, restart the server and update RAT before reconnecting.
RAT connects but functions are missing
- Verify that the Bad Company Server Manager mod is installed on the game server. RAT documentation calls it required.
- Install or repair Alloc’s Server Fixes for features such as the web map and private player messages.
- Check whether the server is remote. The RAT documentation says some functions cannot work against a remotely hosted server.
- Review the current release notes for your RAT and game versions. A 2026 RAT 5 announcement exists, but a complete current compatibility matrix is not established in the available documentation.
The server restarts repeatedly
Temporarily disable automatic start, scheduled restart and RAM-threshold restart, then start the server manually and inspect console logs. Re-enable one automation rule at a time. Repeated restarts can result from a threshold set too low, a mod load failure, insufficient memory or a command that returns an error.
Backups fail or cannot be restored
- Check that the RAT process can write to the destination and that the disk has free space.
- Confirm that the archive contains the expected world files rather than only an empty directory.
- Stop the game server before restoring and preserve the current save before overwriting anything.
- If the host controls the filesystem, use the provider’s backup and restore process instead of assuming RAT has local file access.
Version and lifecycle cautions
An older setup wiki warns that development of its original 7D2D Server Manager has ceased. Do not apply legacy instructions blindly to RAT. Use legacy material only to understand concepts, then follow the current RAT documentation and the versions of the Bad Company Server Manager and Alloc’s Server Fixes that match your game installation.
The available material does not establish a complete compatibility table or licensing terms for every RAT release. In particular, the existence of a 2026 RAT 5 announcement is not proof that every current 7 Days to Die build is supported. Check the release notes before upgrading the game, RAT or either dependency, and make a verified backup before the change.
Pre-launch checklist
- The dedicated server starts normally without RAT.
- The Bad Company Server Manager mod is installed server-side.
- Alloc’s Server Fixes is installed if required functions are enabled.
- Telnet or Webconsole is enabled in

Once these checks pass, enable auto-reconnect, then add automatic starts, scheduled restarts, RAM monitoring, backups, messages, commands and logging individually. This makes it clear which setting caused a problem if the server later fails to start or RAT loses control.
