How to Stream Video with NGINX on a VPS (MP4, HLS, and Live RTMP)

A practical NGINX-on-a-VPS guide covering MP4 files, pseudo-streaming, HLS playlists, and live RTMP ingest, with configuration examples, module requirements, security steps, and troubleshooting.

NGINX on a virtual private server can deliver downloadable MP4 files, support time-based seeking, serve HLS playlists and segments, or accept a live RTMP feed and publish HLS for viewers. The right setup depends on whether your source is prerecorded or live, whether viewers need adaptive playback, and how much CPU, storage, and outbound bandwidth your VPS can provide.

For a small on-demand library, start with ordinary HTTP delivery or MP4 pseudo-streaming. Use HLS when browser and device compatibility, adaptive renditions, or live playback matter. For a live channel, add an RTMP module, configure an ingest application, and expose its HLS output over HTTPS.

Choose the streaming architecture before installing anything

NGINX is the web server in all three designs, but each design solves a different problem. Choosing the simplest one that meets your requirements avoids unnecessary modules, transcoding, and operational work.

Architecture Input Viewer URL Best for Main costs and limits
Static MP4 delivery Finished MP4 files Direct .mp4 URL Downloads and straightforward on-demand playback One file and one rendition per title; no adaptive bitrate
MP4 pseudo-streaming Finished MP4 files MP4 URL with time parameters from a compatible player On-demand seeking without segmenting every file Requires the HTTP MP4 module and correctly prepared metadata
HLS video on demand MP4 or MOV files encoded with supported codecs .m3u8 playlist plus media fragments Broad device compatibility, seekable playback, and multiple renditions More files, playlist and cache management, and possible packaging work
Live RTMP to HLS Live RTMP publisher HLS .m3u8 playlist over HTTP or HTTPS Live channels and browser-friendly distribution Requires an additional RTMP module; transcoding can consume substantial CPU and RAM

HLS and MP4 pseudo-streaming are not interchangeable. MP4 is usually the lowest-complexity choice for a fixed, prerecorded file. HLS breaks a presentation into a playlist and short media fragments, which lets players start at a selected point and switch between renditions when you provide them. Live workflows generally use HLS for viewers even when RTMP is used for contribution from an encoder.

Plan the VPS, network, and file layout

Estimate the real resource requirements

NGINX can serve media efficiently, but a VPS still has to carry every byte to viewers. Outbound traffic grows with the number of concurrent viewers, the bitrate of each rendition, and the time they watch. There is no universal bandwidth formula in the NGINX documentation because protocol overhead, cache behavior, bitrate ladders, and viewing patterns vary. Measure your expected peak and leave headroom for bursts, operating-system traffic, and administration.

Transcoding is a separate workload. If FFmpeg or another encoder converts an incoming stream into several H.264/AAC renditions, CPU and memory use can rise quickly. A VPS that is adequate for static file delivery may not be adequate for live multi-rendition encoding. If the source is already encoded in a format your delivery path accepts, avoiding a needless transcode reduces latency and resource use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use separate upload, source, and playback locations

Create a directory for finished media and a different directory for incoming uploads or HLS output. Do not let an upload process write directly into the same location from which anonymous viewers can execute or browse files. Give the service account only the permissions it needs, and keep stream keys and configuration files outside public web roots.

sudo install -d -o www-data -g www-data -m 0750 /srv/media/vod
sudo install -d -o www-data -g www-data -m 0750 /srv/media/hls
sudo install -d -o streamer -g www-data -m 0750 /srv/media/incoming

The account name differs by distribution and by the way NGINX was installed. Confirm it before applying ownership changes. A publishing process may need write access to an HLS directory while NGINX needs read access; that is why separate ownership and group permissions are useful.

Open only the ports you need

  • Allow SSH only from administration addresses where practical.
  • Allow TCP 80 and 443 for HTTP redirects, HTTPS playback, and certificate validation.
  • Open TCP 1935 only when publishers will send RTMP directly to this VPS. If a private network or tunnel carries ingest, keep the public port closed.
  • Do not expose databases, management panels, or internal transcoder ports to the internet.

Install NGINX from a verifiable package or build

Use a currently supported Linux image and install NGINX from the distribution repository or the official NGINX repository. Official installation guidance describes importing the NGINX signing key and repository so packages can be verified. Package names and module packages differ between distributions, so check the package metadata rather than copying a name from an unrelated release.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install nginx
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl enable --now nginx

Before choosing a configuration, inspect the build:

Look for the HTTP MP4 module in the configure arguments if you plan to use pseudo-streaming. The module is not built by default and requires a build with --with-http_mp4_module. The RTMP functionality described here is an additional module; it may be available as a distribution dynamic module, or you may need to compile NGINX with the third-party module using --add-module. A dynamic module must be loaded with a load_module directive before its directives are used.

Keep the NGINX binary, modules, and operating system patched. NGINX release notes include security fixes that can affect media-related modules, so verify the current release and advisory for your distribution before pinning a version in an installation script.

Option 1: serve prerecorded MP4 files

Basic HTTP delivery

If viewers only need to play or download complete files, a normal static location is enough. Put the MP4 in the media directory and map a URL to it:

server {
    listen 80;
    server_name video.example.net;

    location /media/ {
        alias /srv/media/vod/;
        add_header Cache-Control public;
    }
}

With this mapping, /srv/media/vod/lesson-01.mp4 is requested as http://video.example.net/media/lesson-01.mp4. Use HTTPS for real viewers; the HTTP listener can be used only to redirect to HTTPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable MP4 pseudo-streaming when seeking matters

The ngx_http_mp4_module provides server-side pseudo-streaming for MP4 files. A compatible player can request start and end times so a viewer can jump into a file without downloading everything before the selected position.

server {
    listen 443 ssl;
    server_name video.example.net;

    location /media/ {
        alias /srv/media/vod/;
        mp4;
    }
}

The directive works only when NGINX was built with --with-http_mp4_module. If nginx -t reports an unknown mp4 directive, install a build that includes the module or remove the directive and use ordinary range requests instead.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Prepare the MP4 metadata correctly

MP4 playback starts faster when the file’s metadata, including the moov atom, is near the beginning. If metadata is at the end, the module may need to read and rewrite the entire file before serving a requested interval. That increases CPU, memory, and disk I/O, particularly when many users seek at once. Check and prepare files during an offline packaging step rather than discovering the problem under load.

Use H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio when you need the broadest compatibility with the NGINX HLS module. A file can be valid MP4 and still fail in a particular browser or player if its codecs are unsupported.

Option 2: deliver HLS for prerecorded video

What the HLS module serves

The NGINX HLS reference describes ngx_http_hls_module as server-side HTTP Live Streaming support for MP4 and MOV media files. It produces an .m3u8 playlist and media fragment URLs, commonly using .ts fragments. The documented example uses a five-second fragment interval:

location /hls/ {
    alias /srv/media/hls/;
    hls;
    hls_fragment 5s;
    add_header Cache-Control no-cache;
    add_header Access-Control-Allow-Origin *;
}

Place the HLS-compatible source or generated HLS assets in the path your build expects, then point the player at the playlist URL, such as https://video.example.net/hls/course.m3u8. A five-second fragment is an example, not a performance benchmark or a universal latency target. Shorter fragments can reduce delay but increase request frequency and filesystem activity; longer fragments reduce overhead but make startup and recovery less responsive.

Handle MIME types and cross-origin playback deliberately

Ensure your MIME map identifies playlists as application/vnd.apple.mpegurl and MPEG-TS fragments as video/mp2t. Many installations already include these mappings in mime.types; verify rather than duplicating conflicting entries.

Browsers may fetch a playlist or segment from a different origin than the page containing the player. Add an Access-Control-Allow-Origin header only for the origins you actually operate. A wildcard is convenient for public media but is inappropriate when credentials or private content are involved. Test preflight requests if your player sends non-simple headers.

Decide whether you need adaptive renditions

A single HLS playlist works for a controlled audience with similar connections. Adaptive bitrate delivery requires multiple encoded renditions and a master playlist that references them. NGINX can serve the resulting files, but it does not remove the need to create, validate, store, and monitor each rendition. The encoder or packaging workflow must produce compatible codecs, synchronized segment boundaries, and correct playlist references.

Option 3: accept live RTMP and publish HLS

Install and load the RTMP module

The official RTMP guide describes a dynamic module that enables streaming in RTMP, HLS, and DASH formats. Because this is an additional module, confirm whether your Linux distribution supplies a compatible package. If it does not, compile NGINX with the module using the method documented for your chosen release, or build the module dynamically when your package toolchain supports that option.

A dynamic-module configuration commonly begins with a distribution-specific path such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
load_module modules/ngx_rtmp_module.so;

The exact file path is not portable. Find the installed module location and place load_module at the top level of nginx.conf, before the events, http, or rtmp blocks. Do not copy a path from another operating system.

Configure an RTMP application and HLS output

The following illustrates the separation between RTMP ingest and HTTP delivery. Directive availability can vary with the module build, so validate it against the module documentation installed on your VPS.

rtmp {
    server {
        listen 1935;
        chunk_size 4096;

        application live {
            live on;
            hls on;
            hls_path /srv/media/hls;
            hls_fragment 5s;
        }
    }
}

http {
    include       mime.types;
    default_type  application/octet-stream;

    server {
        listen 80;
        server_name video.example.net;

        location /hls/ {
            alias /srv/media/hls/;
            add_header Cache-Control no-cache;
            add_header Access-Control-Allow-Origin *;
        }
    }
}

In this example, the publisher targets an RTMP address shaped like rtmp://video.example.net/live/stream-key. Viewers use the HLS playlist generated in the configured directory. The exact playlist filename and URL depend on the stream name and module behavior; inspect the directory while a test stream is running instead of assuming a filename.

Configure the publisher and codecs

Your camera, encoder, or contribution service must publish to the RTMP application and stream name. Use H.264 video and AAC audio when browser-oriented HLS compatibility is the goal. If the incoming codecs are unsuitable, insert a transcoder and publish its output to the RTMP application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single FFmpeg command that is correct for every source. The command depends on input frame rate, interlacing, audio layout, desired renditions, keyframe interval, and whether the source is already compressed. Test the encoder with a short stream, verify that the playlist advances, and check playback on the devices you intend to support.

Protect the publishing endpoint

Anyone who can publish to an unprotected application may replace your channel or consume your bandwidth. Use an unguessable stream key and enforce authentication or authorization in the RTMP layer or an adjacent publishing service. Keep the key out of web pages, logs, source repositories, and chat messages. Rotate it after staff changes or accidental disclosure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use HTTPS for viewer delivery

Serve playlists, segments, and MP4 files over HTTPS when the player page is HTTPS. Otherwise browsers can block the media as mixed content. Obtain a certificate for the playback hostname, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, and renew it automatically with the certificate tooling supported by your distribution.

RTMP ingest is normally separate from browser playback. You can keep RTMP on port 1935 for encoders while delivering HLS over 443. If publishers also require encrypted contribution, use a supported secure transport or a private network rather than assuming that ordinary HTTP TLS protects an RTMP socket.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test each layer before opening the stream to viewers

  1. Validate syntax: run sudo nginx -t. Fix every error before reloading.
  2. Reload safely: run sudo nginx -s reload after a successful test. A reload applies the new configuration without stopping existing workers.
  3. Check the file path: use curl -I https://video.example.net/media/lesson-01.mp4 and confirm a successful status, an appropriate content type, and range support where expected.
  4. Check HLS generation: start a test publisher or open a prepared source, then request the .m3u8 URL. Confirm that the playlist changes and that every referenced fragment returns successfully.
  5. Check playback: test at least one desktop browser, one mobile browser, and the player environment used by your audience. A playlist can be syntactically valid while a codec, CORS policy, or TLS problem prevents playback.
  6. Observe the server: watch NGINX error logs, disk usage, outbound traffic, and CPU or RAM consumption during a realistic test.

Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
unknown directive mp4 The HTTP MP4 module is absent Inspect nginx -V; install or build NGINX with --with-http_mp4_module, or remove the directive.
unknown directive hls or rtmp The relevant module is not installed or loaded Verify the package, dynamic-module path, and load_module placement; then run nginx -t.
Playlist loads but fragments return 404 The URL mapping does not match the HLS output directory Compare the configured output path with the HTTP alias or root, and verify permissions.
Playlist stops advancing Publisher disconnected, transcoder stalled, or NGINX cannot write segments Check publisher health, transcoder logs, disk space, and write permissions.
Video starts slowly or seeking causes heavy load MP4 metadata is at the end of the file Move or rewrite the metadata during offline preparation; monitor CPU, memory, and disk I/O.
Playback works on one site but not another CORS or mixed-content policy Serve everything over HTTPS and allow only the required origins and methods.
Live delay is unexpectedly high Fragment duration, playlist retention, encoder buffering, or player buffering Measure each stage; change fragment settings only after confirming the module and player support the target latency.

Operate the service safely after launch

Monitor storage and retention

HLS creates many small files. Monitor the filesystem that holds segments and remove stale output according to the retention behavior of your module and workflow. A full filesystem can stop both segment creation and unrelated system services. Keep VOD source files, temporary uploads, and live segments on paths where quotas and cleanup policies can be applied independently.

Watch bandwidth, workers, and transcoders

Track outbound bytes, concurrent requests, HTTP error rates, NGINX worker errors, and the age of the newest HLS segment. For live channels, monitor transcoder CPU, memory, process restarts, input disconnects, and output frame rate. Alert on a playlist that has not advanced for longer than your operational tolerance.

Apply least privilege and limit exposure

  • Keep NGINX configuration readable only by administrators and the service account where required.
  • Do not place stream keys, private playlists, or upload credentials under a public directory.
  • Use separate hostnames or locations for public playback and authenticated administration.
  • Rate-limit or firewall ingest where your module and network design allow it.
  • Patch NGINX, the RTMP module, the operating system, and any transcoder on a regular schedule.

Which setup should you use?

  • Choose static MP4 when your priority is the fewest moving parts and viewers can download or play a complete file.
  • Choose MP4 pseudo-streaming when you need time-based seeking but do not need adaptive renditions or live output.
  • Choose HLS VOD when the audience uses varied devices, you need playlist-based playback, or you plan adaptive bitrate versions.
  • Choose RTMP to HLS when a live encoder publishes to your VPS and viewers need browser-friendly HLS. Add transcoding only when the incoming stream is not suitable or when multiple renditions are required.

Start with a small test hostname and a short media sample. Confirm module support, permissions, HTTPS, playlist generation, and resource usage before moving a production library or opening a live ingest port. This staged approach exposes path, codec, and firewall mistakes while the cost of failure is still low.
