Self-hosting is also possible, but you must download the matching CurseForge SERVER-PACK for your chosen release—not the client ZIP—and run it on Forge 1.20.1. Plan for 6–8 GB of RAM for a small private group, 10 GB or more for a public server, Java 17, and TCP port 25565 for players connecting from outside your home network.

What the server actually needs
Society: Sunlit Valley is a Forge modpack targeting Minecraft 1.20.1. CurseForge publishes separate server-pack archives for individual releases. For example, the Files area includes server-pack entries associated with releases such as 3.1.1 and 3.4.2; the file pages supplied for this guide are CurseForge file 6783957 and CurseForge file 7275740.

The ZIP downloaded by a normal launcher is a client installation or manifest. It is not a runnable server. A server-pack ZIP contains the server-side mod JARs, configuration files and a launch script intended for a dedicated instance. Downloading the wrong archive is the most common reason a new server fails before it starts.
Version labels have changed across CurseForge listings. One listing title identifies SERVER-PACK 3.1.1, another identifies 4.0.8, and a search result refers to a newer 4.1.5A main release (file 8082974). Because those labels and dates do not line up consistently, open the pack’s Files tab immediately before downloading and make sure every player installs the same release as the server.

Choose managed hosting or self-hosting
Managed hosting: least setup
A managed host runs the operating system, Java process and network service for you. Its control panel normally offers a modpack search, an install button, start and stop controls, console logs, and some combination of backups and file access. This is the practical choice if your group wants to play without configuring a home router or maintaining a server machine.
Installers described by CreeperHost, Wabbanode, BoxToPlay and Kinetic follow the same pattern. You create a Minecraft Java instance, search for Society: Sunlit Valley (Wabbanode also says to try “Chakyl” if needed), select the required release, install it, and start the instance. The exact button names differ, so verify the selected Minecraft and pack versions in the panel before confirming.

Self-hosting gives you direct access to the files, configs, logs and installed mods. It avoids a hosting-panel subscription, but you provide the computer, storage, Java runtime, backups, uptime and network configuration. Friends outside your local network also need a reachable address and a router rule forwarding the Minecraft port.

Managed hosting: exact installation workflow
- Create a Java server instance. In the provider’s control panel, choose a Minecraft Java server, give it a recognizable name, and wait for the instance to finish provisioning.
- Open the modpack installer. Select the panel’s modpack, marketplace or installer section. Search for
Society: Sunlit Valley. If the provider documents an alternate search term, tryChakylas well. - Select the release. Do not blindly choose “latest” when your players already have a pack installed. Match the exact release shown in the launcher and confirm that the server is configured for Forge 1.20.1.
- Install the pack. Click Install (or the provider’s equivalent) and let the panel download the server files. Do not upload the client ZIP over the installed files.
- Start and inspect the console. Start the instance and watch the live console until Forge finishes loading and the server reports that it is ready to accept connections. The first start can take longer while files and world data are created.
- Test with one player. Copy the address shown by the panel into the Java Edition multiplayer screen. The connecting client must use the same modpack release and Minecraft version.
- Pre-generate terrain before inviting everyone. Game Host Bros recommends chunk pre-generation so exploration does not force the server to create large numbers of chunks while several players are online. Use a pre-generation method compatible with the pack, monitor the console, and keep a backup before changing world-generation settings.
If the installer cannot find the pack, check its spelling, search by the pack author or project page, and look for a manual server-pack upload option. Never substitute a similarly named pack or a different release merely because it appears first in search results.

Self-hosting from the official server pack
1. Pick one release and obtain its server ZIP
Open the CurseForge file listing or the other supplied file listing, then use the Files tab to identify the server-pack archive for the release you intend to run. Confirm that the download is explicitly labeled SERVER-PACK. Keep the exact version number in your notes so the clients and server can be compared later.
2. Prepare Java
FadeHost lists Java 17 for Minecraft 1.20.1 and recommends checking the installed runtime with:

java -versionThis Java guidance is a third-party hosting recommendation; the official CurseForge pages reviewed for this topic do not state a Java requirement. If the command is missing or reports an incompatible runtime, install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime appropriate to your operating system before launching the pack.
3. Extract into a dedicated folder
Create a new directory used only by this server, such as society-sunlit-valley-server, and extract the entire SERVER-PACK ZIP into it. Preserve the folder structure. The included configuration files, libraries, mods and launch script must remain in the locations expected by the pack.

4. Run the supplied launch script
Use the start script included in the archive rather than inventing JVM arguments. The exact command was not confirmed in the available documentation, so inspect the pack’s CurseForge description or the server-pack readme for the script name and any required permissions. On Windows this is commonly a batch file; on Linux or macOS it is commonly a shell script. If a Unix script is not executable, grant execute permission, then run the script from the server directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
5. Accept the EULA when prompted
On a first launch, Minecraft normally creates an eula.txt file and stops. Read the license, change the EULA value to eula=true only if you agree, save the file, and run the supplied start script again. Do not delete the generated files between launches; they contain the world and server configuration.
6. Wait for a clean startup
Read the console for Forge loading errors, missing files or a final ready message. The first boot may download dependencies or take several minutes. Stop the process cleanly from the console or control panel before editing configs or copying a backup; terminating the process while it is writing the world can corrupt data.
Memory planning: how much RAM to allocate
No RAM figure was published by the pack author or a standards body in the material reviewed. The numbers below are recommendations from hosting companies, so treat them as operating guidance rather than a guaranteed requirement.

A sensible starting budget derived from those figures is 6–8 GB for a small private group and 10 GB or more for a public server. Allocate memory to the Java process, not to the entire machine: the operating system and background services still need headroom. If the server swaps, repeatedly reports out-of-memory errors or stalls during exploration, reduce simultaneous load, pre-generate chunks, and increase the allocation only when the host machine has enough free RAM.

FadeHost identifies Minecraft’s default server port as TCP 25565. Players on the same home network can usually connect using the server computer’s local address. Friends on the internet require a public address and a router rule forwarding TCP 25565 to the server computer’s fixed local IP.

- In the router’s port-forwarding section, create a rule for TCP, external port
25565, and internal port25565pointing to that LAN address. - Allow the Java server through the computer’s firewall when the operating system prompts you.
- Start the server, then have a friend test the public address from a different network, such as mobile data. Testing from inside the same LAN can give misleading results because some routers do not support loopback connections.
Router labels and firewall dialogs vary by manufacturer, and an internet provider using carrier-grade NAT may prevent inbound connections even with a correct rule. If outside players cannot connect, verify the server is listening, confirm the forwarding target has not changed, check that the rule is TCP rather than UDP, and ask the provider whether inbound IPv4 connections are available.
Keeping clients, server and world in sync
- Record the exact pack release, Minecraft version and Forge version used by the server.
- Give players the matching client profile; a different mod list or configuration can cause a handshake failure even when the address is correct.
- Back up the complete server directory, especially the world, before changing releases, removing mods or editing generation settings.
- Stop the server cleanly before replacing files. Keep the old directory until the new release has been tested and a player has confirmed that important worlds and inventories load correctly.
- After an update, read the complete startup log. A server that appears online but repeatedly logs missing registry entries or crashes during player login is not ready for normal play.
Common failures and what they mean
The server exits immediately
Check that you extracted the SERVER-PACK rather than the client archive, that Java is available with java -version, and that you launched the included script from the extracted directory. Read the first error in the log rather than the final cascade of secondary messages.
Players see an incompatible or mismatched mod list error
Compare the server’s release number with every player’s launcher profile. Reinstall the exact client release selected for the server; do not assume that two files with similar names contain the same mods.
Local players connect but remote players cannot
Confirm that the server is bound to the computer’s usable network interface, TCP 25565 is allowed by the host firewall, and the router forwards to the current LAN address. Test from another network and check for carrier-grade NAT if the port remains unreachable.
The world lags when players explore
Chunk generation is a heavy burst of work. Follow the pre-generation recommendation from Game Host Bros before opening the server to a larger group, reduce simultaneous exploration, and verify that the machine has adequate memory beyond the Java allocation.
A release is missing from the host’s installer
Use the provider’s manual upload tools if available, or move the server to a host that offers the required CurseForge release. Keep the server and client on the same version; installing a different release simply because it is listed will create compatibility problems.
Practical recommendation
Choose managed hosting when you want the fastest route, automatic machine administration and a public endpoint without router work. Choose self-hosting when you need full file control, already have a reliable always-on computer and are comfortable with Java, firewall and backup maintenance. Whichever route you choose, the non-negotiables are the same: Forge 1.20.1, a matching SERVER-PACK release, enough memory for your player count, and TCP 25565 for internet players.
