A brochure site or blog usually fits shared hosting or a website builder; a plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript site can use free static hosting; a custom application may need a VPS or cloud hosting. Budget for the renewal price rather than the introductory offer, a separate domain fee of about $10–$15 per year, and no separate SSL charge: free certificates from Let’s Encrypt are the normal standard.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Start by matching hosting to your website
Web hosting is the service that stores your site’s files and sends them to visitors when they request your domain. The best plan is not the one with the largest specification sheet. It is the least complicated option that provides the software, storage, traffic capacity, control and commercial permissions your site needs.

| Website or project | Best starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Personal page, portfolio, brochure site or small blog | Shared hosting or a website builder | Low cost, managed server software and simple publishing |
| Static documentation, landing page or generated site | Static hosting | Files can be deployed from a repository without maintaining a server |
| Application requiring a database, background jobs or custom server software | VPS or cloud hosting | More control over the runtime and resources |
| Learning, experimentation or a service for a private audience | Home server with a tunnel | Maximum control, but the most networking and maintenance work |
Hosting categories overlap. A static site can be placed on a general-purpose server, and a small application can run on shared hosting if the host supports its stack. The distinctions below describe the usual trade-offs, not hard technical boundaries.
Shared hosting
Shared hosting puts your account on a server used by multiple customers. The provider normally manages the operating system, web server and control panel, while you upload files or install a content-management system. It is generally the cheapest paid option and is practical for most new sites.

Secondary 2026 cost guides report roughly $2–$15 per month. Introductory prices can hide the actual budget: one cited offer is $2.95 per month initially and $10.99 per month at renewal. Treat the renewal rate, not the first-term promotion, as the meaningful price. Shared plans are a poor fit when you need unusual server software, guaranteed resources or sustained high traffic.
Website builders
A builder bundles hosting, a visual editor and often templates, forms and basic analytics into one plan. You do not normally manage DNS records beyond connecting a domain, patch a server or configure a web stack. This is convenient for a small business that values a quick launch over portability and deep customization.
The trade-off is dependence on the builder’s editor, plan limits and export options. Confirm that the plan supports your required pages, forms, languages, analytics and domain connection before publishing. Hosting is included in the plan price, so compare the complete recurring subscription rather than looking for a separate server fee.
Static hosting
Static hosting serves prebuilt HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and other files. It does not execute your application code or provide a server-side database. A static generator, a hand-coded site or a frontend build can be deployed from a Git repository, often with a free tier.
Static hosting is efficient and secure for documentation, portfolios, marketing pages and other sites whose content can be generated before deployment. It needs a separate service for functions such as logins, payments, comments or dynamic data. Free plans also have quotas that matter when a project grows:
- Cloudflare Pages’ free plan allows up to 500 builds per month, each build can time out after 20 minutes, and the plan allows up to 20,000 files.
- A January 23, 2026 Cloudflare changelog says paid Pages plans can deploy up to 100,000 files.
- GitHub Pages supports sites up to 1 GB, has a 10-minute deployment timeout, a 100 GB per month soft bandwidth limit and a soft limit of 10 builds per hour. The build-frequency soft limit is not applied when publishing through a custom GitHub Actions workflow.
GitHub’s published limits also say GitHub Pages is not intended or allowed to be used as free web hosting for an online business, e-commerce site or similar commercial site. Choose a service whose terms explicitly permit your use case instead of assuming that a free tier is suitable for business traffic.
Virtual private server (VPS)
A VPS reserves a virtual machine’s allocated CPU, memory and storage inside a larger physical host. You can choose the operating system, web server, runtime and database, and you can isolate applications more effectively than on shared hosting. The flexibility comes with administration work: updates, firewall rules, SSH security, backups, monitoring and recovery are your responsibility unless you buy a managed VPS service.

Secondary 2026 cost guides report introductory VPS prices of about $10–$40 per month and renewal prices of about $20–$100 per month. Check whether the quoted amount includes backups, management, control-panel licensing, IPv4 addresses and data transfer. A low base price can become expensive after those additions.
Cloud hosting
Cloud hosting distributes workloads across a provider’s infrastructure and can add resources as traffic changes. Reported 2026 prices range from about $5 to more than $200 per month. The range is wide because a small managed deployment and a multi-instance application are both described as cloud hosting.
Cloud billing is often usage-based. Read the rate for compute time, storage, database capacity, outbound transfer, snapshots and managed services. Set a budget alert before sending production traffic, and decide what should happen when a limit is reached. Cloud elasticity is useful only when you understand the bill and have a plan for sudden load.

Self-hosting from home
You can run a web server on hardware at home and expose it through a tunnel. One 2026 guide rates initial setup at £0–£100 and recurring costs at £10–£30. This route gives you the most control and the lowest ease of use.
A home server requires reliable power and internet service, updates, local backups, firewall configuration, a way to reach the machine when its address changes and a recovery plan for hardware failure. Residential connections may block incoming traffic or restrict servers in their terms. It is an advanced learning or specialist option, not the default for a public business site.
What hosting really costs
Published prices in this section come from secondary 2026 cost guides and were not checked against provider pricing pages. They are planning ranges, not quotes. Taxes, currency conversion, storage, traffic, support and add-ons can change the final amount.
| Hosting type | Reported price | Cost qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | $2–$15 per month | Reported 2026 range; renewal may be much higher than the introductory price |
| VPS | $10–$40 per month introductory; $20–$100 per month at renewal | Reported 2026 ranges; management and extras may cost more |
| Cloud hosting | $5–$200+ per month | Reported 2026 range; usage-based services can vary with traffic |
| Home server and tunnel | £0–£100 setup; £10–£30 recurring | Reported guide estimate; assumes you already have or acquire suitable hardware |
A domain is a separate purchase, commonly about $10–$15 per year. The registration price and the renewal price can differ, so record the renewal amount and the date it will be charged. Some plans include a first-year domain promotion; that does not remove the future registration cost.

SSL should not be an extra line item. Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated certificate authority operated by the nonprofit Internet Security Research Group. Its default certificates are valid for 90 days and are designed to renew automatically. A hosting company may charge a nominal administration fee, but charging for the certificate itself is a warning sign when the same HTTPS function can be obtained at no certificate cost.
Prepare before you buy
Define the site’s technical needs
- List the software you will run: static files, a content-management system, a specific programming language, a database, scheduled jobs or media processing.
- Estimate storage for the site, uploads, logs and backups separately. A photo archive or video library can outgrow a plan faster than page traffic does.
- Decide whether you need email addresses at your domain. Email may be included, sold as an add-on or intentionally excluded from a hosting plan.
- Identify any compliance, geographic or commercial-use requirement. A free publishing service can be technically capable yet unsuitable under its terms.
- Choose your tolerance for administration. If you do not want to patch a server or respond to an outage, do not select an unmanaged VPS solely because it has more control.
Compare the renewal offer
Put the first-term price, renewal price, billing period, setup fees and cancellation terms in one note. Check whether backups, malware scanning, a control panel, staging, support, a dedicated address or a database are included. A cheap plan that requires several paid add-ons may cost more than a slightly higher all-in plan.
Set up hosting step by step
- Choose the hosting type. Select shared hosting or a builder for a typical brochure site or blog, static hosting for a site made only of frontend files, and a VPS or cloud service for an application that needs server control. Use a home server only when you accept the networking and maintenance burden.
- Register or transfer the domain. Use an account you control, enable account security, and write down both the registration and renewal dates. Keep the domain registrar separate from the hosting account if that makes a future move easier.
- Select the plan after reading its limits. Check storage, databases, file count, build minutes, bandwidth, concurrent processes, backup retention and acceptable-use rules. Verify the renewal rate and every required add-on.
- Point DNS to the host. The host will provide either nameservers or individual records. At your registrar, replace nameservers only when you want the host to manage the DNS zone; otherwise add the supplied records, commonly an address record for the root domain and a name record for
www. Keep existing mail records if your email service uses the same domain. - Wait for DNS changes to propagate. The old and new destinations can appear at different times because resolvers cache records. Test the domain from more than one network before deleting the old site.
- Deploy the site. On shared hosting, use the control panel’s file manager or FTP and place the public files in the designated document root. On static hosting, connect the repository, select the branch and build command, and specify the output directory. On a VPS, install the operating system updates, a web server such as Nginx, your runtime and database, then configure a virtual host for the domain.
- Enable HTTPS. Use the host’s one-click certificate option or request a Let’s Encrypt certificate. Turn on automatic renewal, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, and check that images, scripts, forms and API calls also use secure URLs.
- Test, monitor and back up. Open the site on a phone and desktop, submit every form, test a 404 page, verify redirects, inspect the certificate, and check that the canonical domain is consistent. Set up backups before publishing important content and perform a test restore so you know the backup is usable.
Deployment details by hosting type
Shared hosting or a builder
For shared hosting, create the domain in the control panel, create the required database and user if your application needs one, upload the files, and set the application’s configuration values. Remove installation archives and default pages after setup. Builders usually provide a publish button; connect the domain only after the draft looks correct on the builder’s preview address.
Use a staging copy when the control panel provides one. Apply software and plug-in updates in staging first, confirm that forms and payment flows still work, then publish. Keep an independent export of content where the platform permits it so a plan change does not become a data-loss event.

Static repository deployment
Keep source files and generated output in version control. Set the build command and output folder exactly as the host expects, then make a small test commit. Read the build log when deployment fails: a missing dependency, an unsupported runtime version, a case-sensitive filename or an output folder mismatch is more common than a hosting outage.
Use compressed images, cacheable asset names and a custom domain configuration supplied by the host. Watch file-count, build-time and bandwidth quotas as the project grows. If a site needs comments, authentication or payments, connect an appropriate backend rather than trying to bypass static-hosting restrictions.
VPS or cloud deployment
Start with a non-root administrative account, SSH-key authentication, automatic security updates and a firewall that exposes only the ports you need. Install the web server and runtime from trusted packages, configure a service supervisor, and store secrets outside the public document root. Create a database with a dedicated user and the minimum permissions required.

Before launch, define how you will patch the server, rotate credentials, restore a database, replace a failed instance and inspect logs. In a cloud environment, also set spending alerts and review outbound-transfer charges. Scaling the instance does not replace application profiling: an inefficient query or uncached asset can remain slow after you buy more CPU.
Recommended Free Tools
Free hosting: when it works and when it does not
Free static hosting is a sensible choice for a personal portfolio, open-source documentation, a temporary campaign or a low-traffic project made entirely from frontend files. It removes the monthly server charge, but it does not remove the need for a domain, a build process, DNS configuration, HTTPS setup or backups.
Check quotas before launch. A 20-minute build timeout can break a large generator; a 500-build monthly ceiling can be reached by an automated publishing workflow; and a 20,000-file limit can be surprisingly close for a documentation site with many generated assets. GitHub Pages’ 1 GB site limit and 100 GB monthly soft bandwidth limit are capacity boundaries, not guarantees of unlimited delivery. Its commercial-use restriction makes it inappropriate for an online shop or similar business site even if the site is small.
If your site needs server-side code, a database, private customer data or contractual uptime, move to a service that explicitly provides those capabilities. “Free” is not a substitute for a suitable operating model.
How to choose between shared, VPS and cloud hosting
| Decision factor | Shared hosting | VPS | Cloud hosting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical effort | Low | Medium to high, especially when unmanaged | Ranges from low on managed products to high on configurable infrastructure |
| Control | Limited to the account and supported software | Strong control over the virtual machine | Broad control, often across several managed services |
| Scaling approach | Upgrade plans or move when shared limits are reached | Resize the virtual machine or add instances manually | Add resources or instances according to the service design and traffic |
| Best first use | Small business, personal site or blog | Custom application with a predictable workload | Variable traffic or a system that needs multiple services |
| Main risk | Neighboring workloads and plan limits | Security and maintenance mistakes | Unexpected usage charges and configuration complexity |
Choose shared hosting when publishing content matters more than server control. Choose a VPS when you can maintain a server or have someone responsible for it. Choose cloud hosting when the architecture genuinely needs elastic or distributed resources and you have cost controls in place. A builder is often the fastest route when the site’s design and content are standard and you do not need to export the underlying application.
Common setup problems and fixes
The domain shows the old site
Confirm that the registrar has the exact nameservers or records supplied by the new host. Check the root domain and www separately, and allow cached DNS responses to expire. Do not repeatedly change records while waiting; that makes diagnosis harder.
HTTPS works on one address but not another
Make sure the certificate covers both the root domain and the www hostname you use. Set one canonical hostname, redirect the other to it, and replace hard-coded HTTP asset URLs. If automatic renewal fails, verify that the host can reach the validation path and that a firewall is not blocking it.
Best Value
A static deployment finishes but the page is blank
Inspect the deployment log and confirm the output directory contains an index file at the expected level. Check filename capitalization and asset paths, because a path that works on a case-insensitive computer can fail on a Linux host. Review the browser’s network console for missing JavaScript or CSS files.
A VPS is unreachable
Check the provider’s instance status, DNS address, firewall rules and whether the web server is running. Use the provider’s console access if SSH is unavailable. Restore the last known-good configuration rather than making several untracked changes during an outage.
The bill is higher than expected
Compare the invoice with the renewal terms and inspect add-ons, backup storage, database services, outbound transfer and extra addresses. Cloud users should review usage by service and set a spending alert. If the recurring price no longer matches the site’s needs, export a tested backup before moving to a simpler plan.
Plan for maintenance and a future move
Hosting is an ongoing operation, not a one-time upload. Schedule software updates, certificate-renewal checks, backup jobs and a monthly review of storage, traffic and error logs. Test a restore at a sensible interval rather than assuming that a successful backup job proves recoverability.
Keep the domain registration, source code, database export and backup credentials under your control. Document DNS records, environment variables, scheduled tasks and deployment steps. This information turns a provider outage, price increase or product change into a migration project instead of an emergency reconstruction.
When traffic grows, measure before upgrading. A cache, optimized images, a better database query or a static version of a slow page may solve the bottleneck more cheaply than moving to a larger server. Upgrade when you have identified the limiting resource or when the current service cannot provide a requirement you now need.
