How to Create a Randomly Generated World on a 7 Days to Die Server

To generate a random world on a 7 Days to Die server, stop the server, set GameWorld to RWG in serverconfig.xml, enter a value for WorldGenSeed, choose a supported WorldGenSize, save the file, and start the server. The seed and size define the generated layout: using the same pair can reproduce a world, while changing either creates or loads a different one.

What the RWG settings do

RWG means Random World Generation. It tells the server to create a generated map instead of loading the fixed Navezgane map or an existing world selected by another GameWorld value. The map is generated when the server starts, so the first launch can take substantially longer than a normal restart.

A seed is not a downloadable map. It is input to the generator. A second server using the same game version, seed and size can generally produce the same terrain, but changes to terrain-generation rules can invalidate older results.

Before changing the server

• Stop the server completely. Editing the file while the process is running can be overwritten when the server shuts down.
• Make a backup of the current save and configuration if the server already has a world you may want to keep.
• Confirm the game version and whether your host imposes its own map-size or memory limits. A host’s limit is a provider policy, not a universal game rule.
• Choose the seed and size before starting generation. Changing them later can lead the server to create or load a different world.

Step-by-step: create the random world

1. Stop the server

Use the host control panel’s stop command or stop the dedicated-server process on your own machine. Wait until the server is fully offline before opening its configuration.

2. Open serverconfig.xml

Find the server’s serverconfig.xml in the configuration or installation directory. Keep the existing XML structure and change the values inside the relevant property elements. A typical arrangement looks like this:

The exact file layout can differ between hosting panels. If your file already contains these properties, edit their value attributes rather than adding duplicate entries.

3. Set GameWorld to RWG

Enter the value exactly as RWG. This is the switch that selects random generation. Leaving a fixed-world value in place will continue to load Navezgane or another existing world instead of creating a random map.

4. Enter a seed

Put any text in WorldGenSeed. Words, numbers or a combination can be used; the important point is to record the value exactly, including capitalization and spaces if your configuration accepts them. The seed determines the layout together with the map size.

For a shared server, publish the seed to your administrators or store it with your backup. Knowing the seed makes it possible to request the same generation again, provided the game version and size are also the same.

5. Select a map size

Set WorldGenSize to a value supported by your particular game version and hosting environment. Do not assume that every number accepted by a configuration parser is a valid or practical RWG size. The documented community reports conflict, so verify the allowed set against the release documentation for your version before committing to a large map.

6. Save the file and start the server

Save serverconfig.xml, start the server and watch its console or log. Let generation finish before players connect. Joining while the world is still being built can produce failed connections, missing terrain or an apparently stuck startup.

7. Confirm that the generated world loaded

After startup completes, connect and check that the server is not presenting the familiar fixed Navezgane layout. If it does, stop the server and recheck the spelling and capitalization of GameWorld, then verify that the edited file is the one the server actually reads.

Choosing a safe WorldGenSize

There is no single, version-independent list that can be treated as authoritative. The available community guidance gives three different descriptions:

• One hosting guide lists 4096, 6144, 8192 and 10240.
• Another source describes a range from 2048 to 16384 and says Alpha 20 supports 6K, 8K and 10K maps specifically.
• A community wiki says sizes outside the standard set, including 16K, require custom tooling rather than ordinary server configuration.

Because these statements come from different versions and communities, treat the exact set as unresolved until you check the documentation or release notes for the version running on your server. If a host panel offers a drop-down list, use only values it exposes for that version; if you manage the server yourself, test a new size on a disposable copy before committing a live save.

Why size matters

Larger maps require more work during generation and more memory while loading. Alpha 17 forum guidance warned that maps above 8192 generated and loaded very slowly. A community-wiki estimate says a 10240 map takes about 2.5 times as long to generate as an 8192 map; the estimate is not tied to a stated year, so use it as an indication rather than a guaranteed timing.

For a general-purpose server, 8192 is the commonly cited practical ceiling. Smaller maps reduce the initial wait and resource demand. A larger map can provide more exploration space, but it also increases the cost of failed generation attempts and the time players must wait before the first connection.

Seed reproducibility and version changes

Reusing a seed

To reproduce a map, keep the same WorldGenSeed and WorldGenSize, and use the same generation rules. Copy the values exactly; changing one character in the seed creates a different input.

Changing the seed or size

Changing WorldGenSeed or WorldGenSize causes the server to create or load a different world. Treat that as a new-world operation: stop the server, back up the current save, change one setting, start generation and verify the result before inviting players back.

Older seeds

Community documentation warns that seeds created before V3.0 may not reproduce the same map because terrain-generation rules changed. Keep the original game version with the seed when exact reproduction matters, or expect the terrain to differ after a major generation-rule change.

Does GameName affect the layout?

Reports conflict. One administrator said keeping GameName and WorldGenSeed the same worked well, while other guidance treats the game name as a save identifier rather than a layout input. There is no reliable basis here for promising that changing GameName will or will not alter RWG terrain. Keep it unchanged when reproducing a world, and test on a backup if you need to rename the save.

Cross-play and hosting limits

Community wiki guidance says cross-play servers must be vanilla and use WorldGenSize of 8192 or smaller. If cross-play is important, stay within that limit and avoid assuming that a modded server or a larger map will remain compatible.

Managed hosts may tie the largest selectable map to the number of player slots or to the plan’s memory allocation. Such restrictions come from the provider. If a value is rejected by the panel, check its version-specific settings and resource limits instead of repeatedly editing the XML.

Troubleshooting a failed or incorrect generation

The server keeps loading Navezgane

• Stop the server and confirm GameWorld is exactly RWG, not a fixed-world name.
• Verify that you edited the active serverconfig.xml, not a template or a local copy.
• Check for duplicate GameWorld properties. Remove the duplicate or ensure the server reads the intended entry.
• Start again and wait for generation to complete before testing the connection.

Generation appears frozen

Large maps can take a long time, particularly above 8192. Check the server log for continuing disk or CPU activity before terminating the process. If generation genuinely stalls, a forum-reported workaround is to generate the map on a personal computer and upload it to the server. The report does not establish which game versions support that workflow, so make a complete backup and confirm the required save and terrain files before replacing anything.

The world loads with missing terrain

Community reports say an RWG world may require the terrain folder alongside the save data. If a copied world opens with absent or corrupt terrain, compare the complete generated-world directory with the server’s uploaded files rather than transferring only the visible save folder. Because this behavior is version-dependent and reported without a confirmed scope, test the copy privately first.

The server rejects the selected size

Return to a commonly supported value, such as 8192 or smaller, and test. Then verify the allowed sizes for your exact release. A value listed by one source may be unavailable in another version, and a host may impose a narrower list than the game itself.

A repeated seed produces different terrain

• Confirm that both runs use the same seed, including capitalization and spacing.
• Confirm that WorldGenSize is identical.
• Check whether one run used a different game version or crossed the V3.0 terrain-rule change.
• Keep GameName unchanged while testing, because community guidance disagrees about its role.

A repeatable operating checklist

1. Record the game version, seed, size and game name.
2. Stop the server and back up the current save.
3. Edit the active serverconfig.xml.
4. Set GameWorld to RWG.
5. Enter the exact WorldGenSeed.
6. Choose a version-supported WorldGenSize, preferably 8192 or smaller for cross-play.
7. Save the file and start the server.
8. Wait for generation to finish, then verify the world in-game.
9. Preserve the configuration and generated terrain with the save backup.

The essential rule is simple: RWG selects random generation, while the seed and size determine which generated world you receive. The version-specific size list and the resource cost of large maps are the parts that require the most caution.
