Move the contents of world/DIM-1 into a sibling folder named worldname_nether, move the contents of world/DIM1 into worldname_the_end, and upload all three folders to the Spigot server root. Replace worldname with the value of level-name in server.properties.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The Overworld folder itself stays in place. The conversion changes where the two other dimensions are stored; it does not require rebuilding the Overworld. A backup and a test startup are essential because a wrong folder name or an extra level of nesting can make Spigot generate a different world.

What changes when a vanilla world becomes a Spigot world?
Vanilla Minecraft stores all three dimensions under one main world directory. If the main directory is called world, its relevant structure is:
world/— Overworld dataworld/DIM-1/— Nether dataworld/DIM1/— End data
Spigot expects the dimensions as sibling directories. The main directory uses the name defined by level-name in server.properties. A world whose level name is survival therefore uses this arrangement:

| Directory | Dimension |
|---|---|
survival/ |
Overworld |
survival_nether/ |
Nether |
survival_the_end/ |
End |
Only the directory arrangement changes. The conversion procedure is a file move, not an export or import operation. Leaving the Overworld in its main folder and placing the two dimension datasets beside it allows Spigot to find the existing terrain instead of creating replacement dimensions.
The layout described here is based on several consistent third-party hosting guides. No official Spigot or Minecraft reference page was available for this exact migration, so test the result on a copied server before deleting any original files.

Before you move anything
Stop the vanilla server cleanly
Shut down the server from its normal console or control panel and wait until it has finished saving. Do not copy a world while the process is still running. A live server can be writing region and player data while you copy it, leaving an incomplete or inconsistent backup.
Make a complete backup
Download or copy the entire server directory, not only the visible world folder. Keep the backup outside the directory that you will modify and label it with the date and the original server type. A full backup lets you restore the vanilla layout if the converted server starts with a new world, reports missing data, or shows incorrect dimension progress.
- Keep the original vanilla world untouched until the Spigot copy has been verified.
- Back up
server.propertiesand any other configuration files you may need to restore. - If your host provides snapshots, create one before downloading or rearranging files.
- Use a second copy for experiments such as deleting and regenerating dimensions.
Confirm the target world name
Open server.properties in the Spigot server directory and find the line beginning with level-name=. The value after the equals sign is the exact base name Spigot uses. For example, with level-name=adventure, the three directories must be adventure, adventure_nether, and adventure_the_end.
Names are significant. Do not assume the base directory is always called world, and do not add spaces, capitalization changes, or extra suffixes. If level-name points to adventure but you upload a folder named world, Spigot can look in the wrong location and generate a fresh level.

Convert the existing world, step by step
1. Prepare a working copy
After stopping the vanilla server, download the complete world directory and work on that copy. If the server currently uses a name other than world, use its actual name in every path. The instructions below use world only as an example.
2. Check the two vanilla dimension directories
Inside the main world folder, verify that both DIM-1 and DIM1 are present. They are the directories that contain the existing Nether and End data. Do not move the main world directory as a single renamed package and expect Spigot to discover the dimensions automatically; the two subdirectories must be separated for the Spigot layout.
3. Create the Spigot sibling directories
In the same server-root location where the main world directory will sit, create two directories using the base name from level-name:
worldname_netherworldname_the_end
If the base name is world, the names are world_nether and world_the_end. If the base name is myserver, use myserver_nether and myserver_the_end. The suffixes must be exactly _nether and _the_end.
4. Move the Nether data
Open world/DIM-1 and move everything inside it into worldname_nether. The destination should contain the Nether files directly. Avoid creating an extra level such as worldname_nether/DIM-1/... unless you have confirmed that your particular server layout explicitly requires it. The standard conversion described by the host guides places the contents of DIM-1 directly in the sibling folder.
5. Move the End data
Open world/DIM1 and move everything inside it into worldname_the_end. As with the Nether, the End files should sit directly in the destination directory. Do not move the entire DIM1 directory and leave it nested unless inspection of the destination shows that the server already uses that structure.

6. Leave the Overworld where it is
Keep the main world directory, including its Overworld files, beside the two new sibling directories. Do not delete or rename the main directory after moving the dimension contents. At this point a converted copy should resemble:
server-root/
worldname/
worldname_nether/
worldname_the_end/
The old DIM-1 and DIM1 directories may now be empty. Preserve the original backup even if you remove empty directories from the working copy; it is your recovery point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Upload the three directories to the Spigot server root
Upload the main world directory and both sibling dimension directories to the directory from which the Spigot server starts. They must be peers, not folders inside one another. If the control panel has a file manager, use its upload and move functions; if you transfer by FTP or another file-transfer method, wait for every directory to finish before starting the server.
Do not upload only worldname. Spigot needs the matching worldname_nether and worldname_the_end directories to reuse the existing dimensions.
8. Start Spigot and watch the first startup
Start Spigot only after all three directories are present. Remain at the console or open the server log while it initializes. A first startup may take time to inspect the transferred data. Stop immediately if you realize that level-name does not match the uploaded folder names or that one of the destination directories is empty; restore the backup and correct the layout before allowing a new world to be written.
How to verify that the conversion worked
Verification should be done before you remove the vanilla backup or make further world changes.

Check the Overworld
Join the server and confirm that familiar Overworld terrain and builds are present. This confirms that Spigot opened the intended main directory rather than creating a new one with a similar name.
Check the Nether
Use a portal or another normal route to enter the Nether. Look for known terrain, structures, portals, and builds from the vanilla server. Newly generated terrain where established areas should be indicates that Spigot did not read the intended Nether directory.
Check the End
Enter the End and verify that its terrain and constructions match the original world. If the End is unexpectedly empty or regenerated, stop and restore the copy before exploring further, because continuing to play can make it harder to identify which files were used.

Check the directory names after startup
Return to the server file manager and confirm that the three directories still sit beside one another and that no second set with a different base name has appeared. A second set is a strong sign that the level-name value and directory names do not agree.
Troubleshooting common conversion failures
Spigot starts a completely new world
The first check is level-name. If it names survival while the uploaded directory is world, Spigot is not being pointed at the transferred Overworld. Stop the server, correct the directory name or the property value, and start again from a clean copy. Also check that the directory is located in the actual Spigot server root rather than inside another upload directory.
The Overworld is correct but the Nether is new
Inspect the Nether sibling directory. It should be named exactly worldname_nether, and its files should be directly inside it after the contents of DIM-1 were moved. A nested path such as worldname_nether/DIM-1, an incorrect base name, or an empty upload can prevent Spigot from finding the old data. Restore the backup and repeat the move rather than trying to merge a newly generated Nether into the old one.

The End is new or missing
Apply the same checks to worldname_the_end and the source DIM1 directory. Confirm that the End contents were transferred completely and that the destination is a sibling of the main world folder. Do not delete the original End data until the copied server has been checked.
The server has duplicate or nested world folders
Stop the server before rearranging anything. Compare the actual paths with the intended three-sibling layout. The conversion requires the Overworld directory and the two dimension directories to be peers. If a file manager created an extra directory during upload, move the contents to the correct level using the backup as a reference.
You cannot tell which layout the server is using
Do not guess from a folder name alone. Open the directories and inspect whether the dimension data is directly inside the sibling folder or inside a nested DIM-1 or DIM1 directory. Keep the untouched backup and test one corrected copy at a time. A cautious comparison is safer than deleting files from the only copy.
Existing-dimension migration versus regeneration
Moving the existing directories is the normal choice when you need to keep the world you already built. Regeneration is a different operation: it discards the generated terrain in a dimension and lets the server create it again from a seed.
| Approach | What you do | Result and risk |
|---|---|---|
| Move existing dimensions | Move the contents of DIM-1 and DIM1 into the matching Spigot sibling directories. |
Reuses the existing Nether and End files. This is the appropriate method when preserving explored terrain and builds matters. |
| Regenerate dimensions | Delete the generated dimension folders and set level-seed to the known seed before starting a clean copy. |
Existing generated terrain is lost. The seed must be known, and the procedure should be tested on a backup first. |
Claims that migration always preserves every aspect of Nether and End progress come from hosting guidance rather than an official Spigot statement. Treat preservation as the intended outcome of moving the files, not as a substitute for a backup and verification pass.

The reverse operation puts the dimension data back under the main world directory. Stop the Spigot server and make a complete backup first.
- Identify the base name from the Spigot directories, such as
worldname,worldname_nether, andworldname_the_end. - Prepare the main directory’s
DIM-1andDIM1destinations. If they do not exist, create them inside the main world directory. - Move the Nether data from the sibling Nether directory into
worldname/DIM-1. - Move the End data from the sibling End directory into
worldname/DIM1. - Remove the now-empty sibling directories only after checking that all data has been transferred and the backup is safe.
Some instructions describe the source paths as world_nether/DIM-1 and world_the_end/DIM1. That applies only when those nested directories actually exist. In the common converted layout produced by the steps above, the Nether and End files are directly inside the sibling folders, so move those contents into the vanilla DIM-1 and DIM1 destinations. Inspect the real paths before moving anything; never create a second unnecessary nesting level.
What about Paper?
One hosting guide reports that Paper handles the dimension arrangement automatically. That report is about Paper, not Spigot, and it was not verified against an official Paper page. Do not apply that claim to a Spigot installation. For this guide, assume that Spigot needs the explicit three-folder arrangement and manual transfer described above. If you are changing server software to Paper instead, check the documentation for the exact Paper version and still keep a full backup.
Final pre-start checklist
- The old server is stopped and no process is writing the world.
- A complete, untouched backup exists outside the working directory.
level-namehas been read fromserver.properties.- The main folder uses that exact base name.
- The Nether folder is named
base-name_nether. - The End folder is named
base-name_the_end. - The contents of vanilla
DIM-1are directly in the Nether destination. - The contents of vanilla
DIM1are directly in the End destination. - The three directories are side by side in the Spigot server root.
- You know how to stop the server and restore the backup if a new dimension appears.
Once those checks pass, start Spigot, inspect the first startup, and verify known locations in the Overworld, Nether, and End before treating the migration as complete.
