Identify the exact pack before installing anything
Modded Minecraft is not tolerant of “almost the same” installations. Record the complete release name and Forge build before downloading server files. For this guide, that identity is:

CurseForge’s live listing displayed 611,637 downloads when accessed in 2026; that total changes over time and is not a performance or compatibility measurement. The pack author describes the 1.20.1 branch as mature and well-rounded and currently recommends it.
Choose the deployment route
Use the official server when you only want to play
The author’s FAQ calls the official server the simplest route. It avoids installing Forge server files, forwarding a port, and maintaining a machine. This is a way to join an existing world, not a way to control your own world, configuration, backups, or moderation settings. Use one of the next two routes when you need an independently administered server.

Use managed hosting for the least administration
The author specifically describes BisectHosting as offering automatic setup for the pack and 24/7 support. That makes it the most directly supported paid route mentioned in the pack’s own FAQ, but availability and terms can change. Before paying, confirm that the control panel installs Slightly Flavoured 1.20.1-5.0.1, selects Forge 47.4.13, and exposes the files you need.
MintServers advertises a preconfigured Slightly Flavoured Forge 1.20.1 plan and memory tuning. Those are vendor statements, not independent performance results. Treat the plan as suitable only after checking the same release and Forge build, allocated resources, backups, support response, cancellation rules, and data-center location.
Self-host for maximum control
A home or rented virtual machine gives you direct control of mods, configuration, permissions, world files, and backups. You are also responsible for Java, Forge, updates, crashes, firewall rules, router configuration, electricity or server fees, and availability. No authoritative fixed RAM minimum is published in the cited pack material, so memory must be tuned from actual use rather than copied from an invented requirement.

Build the server yourself
1. Pin the release for every player
- Tell every player to install Slightly Flavoured 1.20.1-5.0.1, not merely a similarly named 1.20.1 profile.
- Write down Forge 47.4.13 and keep that value with your server notes.
- Disable automatic modpack updates until you have tested a deliberately chosen new release.
A client on a different pack version can fail during the handshake, report missing or extra mods, or connect and then behave unpredictably. Version pinning also makes it possible to identify which change caused a later failure.

2. Install a compatible Java runtime
Install a 64-bit Java runtime and confirm it from a terminal with java -version. Java 17 is the normal 1.20.1 Forge choice, but the runtime expected by your exact Forge installer and operating system takes precedence. If the command reports an older major version, points to a second installation, or is unavailable, correct the system path before troubleshooting Forge.
- On Windows, verify that the service account or scheduled task sees the same Java executable as your interactive account.
- On Linux, check the selected alternative or absolute Java path when several versions are installed.
- Do not mix a 32-bit Java process with a large modpack; it can impose address-space limits before the server is busy.
3. Create a clean server directory
Make a new directory used only for this server. Keeping it separate from the client launcher prevents accidental copying of screenshots, shader caches, logs, and client-only settings. Place the Forge 1.20.1 installer for build 47.4.13 in that directory or in a temporary download location.
4. Install Forge server files
Run the official Forge installer and choose the server-install option for the clean directory. A typical command is:
java -jar forge-1.20.1-47.4.13-installer.jar --installServerUse the filename you actually downloaded; the example is not a reason to substitute another build. Forge’s official 1.20.1 index contains 47.4.13 and later 47.4.x installers. “Latest” is not automatically interchangeable with the build tested by the pack.

5. Launch once to generate the structure
Run the Forge-generated start script once and let it finish its first setup. This creates libraries, configuration directories, logs, and the EULA file. Stop the process cleanly after generation rather than copying files while Java is still writing them.
Generated filenames differ by Forge installer and operating system. Use the supplied Windows batch file or Unix shell script where present. If you create your own script, call the Forge server launcher generated in that directory, not a vanilla server jar, and keep the working directory set to the server directory.

6. Assemble the pack’s server-side files
The pack page does not name a downloadable dedicated-server archive. You therefore need to assemble the server from the exact release files and the Forge installation rather than blindly copying a complete client folder.
- Copy the release’s server-relevant
mods,config, and related data into the server directory. - Read each mod’s documentation or distribution notes before copying. Remove files identified as client-only, such as rendering, menu, or client-interface components that cannot load on a dedicated server.
- Keep a record of every removed file. If the server reports a missing dependency, you can distinguish an intentional client-only removal from an accidental omission.
- Do not overwrite the newly generated Forge libraries or launcher files with unrelated client files.
When a mod is unclear, start from its stated dedicated-server support and the error log. A client directory is evidence of what the launcher downloaded, not proof that every file belongs on a server.

7. Accept the EULA and set basic properties
After the first launch creates the EULA file, read the agreement and set the generated flag as required before starting the server for players. Edit server.properties while the server is stopped.
- Set a private whitelist before inviting anyone.
- Choose difficulty and game rules deliberately; changing them later can affect an established world.
- Set view distance and simulation distance conservatively, then raise them only after observing CPU and memory use.
- Decide where backups will be stored and how often they will run. A backup on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
- Leave the server port at 25565 unless you have a reason to change it; if you change it, the firewall and the address shared with players must match.
8. Start with a repeatable script
Use the Forge-generated start script or a wrapper that records the Java path, working directory, log location, and shutdown behavior. Set -Xms and -Xmx from observed usage, not from a universal pack requirement. Begin with a sensible allocation for your machine, watch memory pressure during exploration and world generation, and leave enough RAM for the operating system and storage cache.
Increasing the heap indefinitely is not a fix for a CPU-bound tick loop, a leaking mod, or a slow disk. Record player count, loaded areas, Java memory, CPU time, and garbage-collection pauses when diagnosing lag. Change one variable at a time so you can identify an improvement or regression.
9. Test privately before opening the network
- Start the server and wait for the log to report a ready state without unresolved mod or dependency errors.
- Join from the same machine or local network using the server’s local address.
- Confirm that the client and server report Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47.4.13, and pack release 5.0.1.
- Travel through several areas, open inventories, use the pack’s major systems, and watch the console for repeated exceptions.
- Stop the server cleanly and confirm that the world saves before making it reachable from the Internet.
10. Configure remote access
The official Minecraft server guidance notes that firewall and router configuration may be required. Allow inbound TCP port 25565 on the server’s operating-system firewall, then forward the same port from the router to the server’s fixed local address. A joining player normally enters your public IP followed by :25565, for example 203.0.113.10:25565; the example address is documentation notation, not an address to use.
- Reserve a DHCP address for the server so router forwarding does not break after a reboot.
- Allow only the required port; do not expose remote administration services unnecessarily.
- Test from a different Internet connection, such as a phone hotspot. A test from inside the same LAN may succeed even when port forwarding is wrong.
- If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may be impossible without a public address or an alternative network arrangement.
Use a managed host without losing version control
Automatic installation saves time, but it does not remove the need to verify the result. During checkout or immediately after deployment, record:
- the installed pack name and release number;
- the Forge build selected by the template;
- allocated memory, CPU limits, storage quota, and player-slot policy;
- backup frequency, retention, restore procedure, and whether backups are charged;
- data-center country or city and the expected latency for your group;
- support hours and whether staff troubleshoot third-party modpacks;
- cancellation, refund, migration, and file-download terms;
- any affiliate disclosure or promotional condition attached to the recommendation.
After installation, inspect the file manager and console rather than trusting the plan title. Confirm the pack’s mods and config contents, check the Forge version in the startup log, and perform a private join with a client pinned to 5.0.1. If the host offers only “Slightly Flavoured 1.20.1” without a release selector, ask support which release and Forge build will actually be deployed.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

Operate the server safely after launch
Control access
Keep the whitelist enabled while testing. Grant operator privileges only to trusted administrators, and remove temporary permissions after maintenance. Share the public address privately and avoid posting it alongside administrative credentials.
Update deliberately
Before changing the pack, Forge, Java, or a single mod, stop the server and make a dated backup of the world, configuration, and current mod list. Test the update on a copy of the world first. Everyone must move to the same tested client profile before the live server changes.
Back up what a reinstall cannot recreate
At minimum, retain the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, pack configuration, scripts, and a manifest of the exact mods and Forge installer. Store at least one copy on another device or service. A backup policy is incomplete until you have restored it successfully.
Monitor real usage
Track online player count, CPU utilization, memory consumption, disk space, startup time, and recurring log exceptions. There is no published official minimum-RAM figure for this pack in the cited material, so choose heap size and hardware from these observations. If performance degrades only at certain locations or player counts, capture those conditions before changing settings.
Which route should you choose?
Choose the official server if your goal is simply to join the author’s maintained world. Choose managed hosting when you value automated installation, provider networking, and support more than monthly cost, but verify release 5.0.1 and Forge 47.4.13 before committing. Self-host when you need complete file control, custom moderation, or ownership of the world and backups and are prepared to maintain Java, Forge, networking, and recovery procedures yourself.
