What a working SevTech server requires
SevTech: Ages is a large Forge modpack rather than a vanilla Minecraft world. The server and clients therefore have to agree on several pieces at once. The ATLauncher listing identifies Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge 14.23.5.2854 for the pack. Use those versions with the same SevTech release on every computer.

| Pack release | SevTech: Ages 3.2.3 | Latest release listed by CurseForge; dated 17 December 2021. A later listing or a private server build may differ, so compare the release number before installing. |
| Minecraft | 1.12.2 | Specified by the ATLauncher pack listing. |
| Forge | 14.23.5.2854 | Specified by the ATLauncher pack listing. |
| Java | 64-bit Java 8 | Minecraft 1.16 and older require Java 8 in ATLauncher’s version table; the SevTech hosting guidance applies Java 8 to this pack. |
| Memory | Begin around 4–8 GB of heap | This is an operating starting point, not a universal minimum. ATLauncher documents about 2 GB as its default server allocation, while one provider example uses -Xms4G -Xmx8G and suggests 10 GB when available. |
| Network | A reachable TCP port selected in the server configuration | Firewall, router and bandwidth settings depend on your operating system, network and hosting platform; no single value is guaranteed for every setup. |
The pack has no authoritative universal player limit or guaranteed RAM minimum. Concurrent players, exploration, automation and the performance of the host machine determine the practical limit.
Choose self-hosting or a managed server
Self-hosting means running the server on a computer you control, such as a spare desktop or a rented virtual machine. It avoids a recurring game-server bill and gives you direct access to files, Java arguments and backups. You are also responsible for operating-system updates, Java installation, firewall rules, router configuration, data protection and keeping the machine online.
#1 Best Overall
A managed Minecraft host can install the pack and operate the underlying machine. Before paying, confirm that the service still supports 64-bit Java 8, allows a custom Forge 1.12.2 pack, provides usable backups, has a suitable location for your players, and states its memory and player limits. Check how it exposes the server port and whether you can download the world and configuration files. Prices, locations and included resources change, so treat the host’s current plan details as the source of truth.
| Decision | Self-hosted machine | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Complete control of scripts, JVM arguments, mods, configs and files. | Control depends on the provider’s panel and file access. |
| Setup work | You install Java, extract files, configure networking and perform updates. | The provider may install the pack and expose a control panel, but you still need to verify versions and settings. |
| Availability | Depends on your power, internet connection and maintenance schedule. | The provider operates the machine and network, subject to its service terms. |
| Backups | You design and test your own backup routine. | Backups may be included, optional or limited; verify retention and restoration before relying on them. |
| Cost | No provider subscription, but electricity, hardware and administration have a cost. | Recurring charge; compare the actual Java 8 support, memory, storage and player policy rather than headline price. |
Download the correct server files
1. Select the server-files package
Open the SevTech: Ages files page on CurseForge and select the server-files download for the exact release you intend to run. A client instance download is not a replacement for the server package: the server archive contains the launch scripts, Forge libraries and server-side layout that the first start process expects.
2. Create a dedicated directory
Make a new folder used only by this server. Choose a disk with enough free space for the extracted files, generated libraries, logs, configuration, backups and the expanding world. Avoid a location that is automatically synchronized or cleaned by another application unless you understand how that service handles locked files.
3. Extract without renaming pack files
Extract the archive directly into the dedicated directory. Preserve the supplied directory structure and do not rename Forge jars, libraries or the launch scripts. Scripts may be named LaunchServer, run, ServerStart or StartServer; use the file supplied by your download rather than substituting a generic vanilla server command.
Install and select Java 8
Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime on the server machine. A 64-bit build is important because the heap sizes used by a modpack can exceed what a 32-bit process can address reliably. If Java 17 or Java 21 is also installed, do not assume the launcher will choose Java 8 automatically.
Verify the runtime
- Open a terminal or command prompt on the server machine.
- Run
java -version. - Confirm that the output identifies a Java 8 release, normally shown as version
1.8.0_xxx, and that the installation is 64-bit where the distribution reports architecture. - If another version appears, edit the supplied launch script so its Java executable points to the Java 8 installation, or adjust the machine’s Java selection before starting the server.
An “Unsupported class version” message or an early Forge launch failure is often a sign that the script is invoking Java 17 or 21 instead of Java 8. Check the executable path in the script, not only the Java version shown in a different user account’s terminal.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Perform the first launch and accept the EULA
The first run creates files that do not exist in the archive. The server will normally stop or refuse to continue until the operator records acceptance of Mojang’s EULA.
- Run the supplied server launcher once. On Windows this is commonly a provided batch launcher; on Linux or another Unix-like system, use the supplied executable or shell script and its documented permissions.
- Wait for the console to generate the server files and report that the EULA must be accepted. Do not interrupt the process while it is unpacking libraries or creating the initial directory structure.
- Stop the process if it remains open after displaying the EULA warning.
- Open
eula.txtin the server directory and read the license. Changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept the EULA. - Save the file and start the same supplied launcher again.
- Leave the console running until Forge and the mod list finish loading and the server reports that it is ready for connections. The first startup can take substantially longer than later starts because files and caches are being created.
If the process appears stuck, inspect the console before killing it. An EULA message means the file was not accepted, was edited in a different directory, or the launcher is writing to another working directory. Confirm the path shown by the script, edit that directory’s eula.txt, and restart.
Configure the generated server
Basic server settings
After the first successful start, stop the server cleanly from its console before editing files. The generated server.properties file contains the server name, difficulty, view distance, game mode and network settings. Change one setting at a time, save it, and restart so you can identify the effect of a change.
- Set a recognizable server name so players can identify it in their multiplayer list.
- Choose the difficulty and view distance that suit the machine’s CPU, memory and player activity. A larger view distance increases the amount of terrain the server must keep active.
- Use the operator permissions system deliberately. Grant operator status only to trusted administrators, because it permits commands that can alter or destroy the world.
- Consider a whitelist when the server is private. Add each player’s exact Minecraft name and test the list with an account that is not an operator.
- Keep the pack’s generated configuration files with the world backup. Client and server configuration mismatches can prevent a connection or change gameplay rules.
World and version safety
Make a complete backup of the world directory and configuration before changing the pack release, Forge build or major settings. A world created by one pack version may not be safe to open with another. Keep dated backup copies outside the live server directory and periodically restore one to a temporary location to verify that the backup is usable.

Set the Java heap and watch performance
SevTech creates more work than a small vanilla server because it combines many mods, progression systems and world-generation features. Start with a heap around 4–8 GB rather than treating the default 2 GB allocation as a target for a busy server. A provider example uses -Xms4G -Xmx8G; the same example suggests 10 GB when that amount is available. These are practical operating recommendations, not a published minimum or a promise of a specific player count.
Apply the allocation
- Stop the server and open the supplied launch script in a text editor.
- Find the existing Java memory arguments. They may already contain
-Xmsand-Xmxvalues. - Set the initial and maximum heap to a deliberate pair, such as
-Xms4G -Xmx8G, using the syntax already present in the script. - Save the script without changing its filename or the Forge and library paths.
- Start the server and watch both the console and the operating system’s memory usage.
-Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx is the maximum heap. Raising -Xmx cannot compensate for a CPU bottleneck, slow storage, inadequate network or an incorrectly selected Java version. Leave memory for the operating system, Java’s non-heap use and any other services on the machine; allocating nearly all physical RAM can cause swapping and make pauses worse.
Recognize when to adjust
- Repeated pauses while several players explore can indicate heap pressure, world-generation load or insufficient overall system memory. Check the server log and operating-system memory before increasing the heap.
- If the machine has headroom and the log shows garbage-collection pressure, increase the allocation in measured steps and compare pause frequency after each change.
- If memory is nearly full, lower the heap or move other services before the operating system starts swapping.
- Keep a note of concurrent players, exploration activity and the chosen heap so you can relate a change to an observable result.
There is no authoritative universal RAM figure or player limit for SevTech. A lightly used private world and a group that explores in several directions can have very different requirements.
Open the server to your players
Configure the listening port
Use the port specified in the generated server configuration. Allow that TCP port through the host’s firewall and, for a machine behind a home router, forward it to the server’s local address. Managed hosts generally expose an equivalent control in their networking panel. The exact forwarding screens and bandwidth requirements vary by platform, so follow the instructions for your operating system, router or provider rather than copying a port value from an unrelated setup.
Give players a stable address
Players connect with the server address and configured port. A home connection may expose a changing public address; if it changes, players need the new address unless you have a separate name service. Do not publish your public address more widely than necessary, and keep the firewall limited to the server port rather than exposing administrative services.

Test from outside the host network
A connection test made from the same machine or local network can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong. Have a player on another connection attempt to join while you watch the server console. If the attempt never reaches the console, check the host firewall, router forwarding, local address assignment and provider networking controls in that order.
Make every client match the server
Each player should install SevTech: Ages 3.2.3, Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge 14.23.5.2854 through a launcher that supports the pack, then start that instance before entering the server address. The client must also contain the pack’s required configuration files and mods. “Almost the same” is not sufficient: a different SevTech release, Forge build or edited configuration can produce a missing-mod, registry or handshake error.

Multiplayer progression is supported: the ATLauncher listing states that every feature in SevTech: Ages can be completed in multiplayer. Progression is player-based rather than server-based, so one player’s advancement does not automatically mean that every player has completed the same stages.
The Together Forever mod can synchronize team progression when players form a team and configure it correctly. Decide whether your group wants individual advancement or shared progression before starting a long-term world, and test the team setup with the actual player accounts. Shared progression can make cooperative play smoother, while individual progression preserves separate goals.

Troubleshooting common failures
“Unsupported class version” or Forge launch errors
Verify the Java executable used by the launcher, not just the Java version installed on the machine. Point the script to 64-bit Java 8 and remove ambiguity caused by Java 17 or 21 installations. Then start the supplied script again and review the first error in the console.

The first launch stops immediately
Look for the EULA message and locate the eula.txt file in the directory used by the script. Set eula=true only after reading and accepting the license, save it, and rerun the same launcher. Editing a similarly named file in another folder has no effect.
The server pauses when players explore
Record how many players are online and whether they are generating terrain in different directions. Check Java heap use, total system memory and garbage-collection pauses. Increase the heap only if the machine has spare memory; otherwise reduce competing workloads or move the server to a machine with more capacity. A larger heap does not fix every performance problem.
A client cannot join
Compare the exact SevTech release, Minecraft version, Forge build, mod files and configuration files on both sides. Confirm that the player is launching the intended instance rather than another 1.12.2 profile. Read the client and server logs for a named missing mod or registry mismatch, then correct the installation before changing the world.
Players cannot reach the server
Confirm that the server is listening on the port shown in its configuration, that the process is running, and that the host firewall permits the connection. For home hosting, verify that the router forwards the port to the machine’s current local address. For managed hosting, check the provider’s networking control and whether an external address has been assigned.

A version change damages the world
Stop using the affected world, restore the most recent known-good backup, and test the new pack or Forge version on a copy. Never use the only copy of a long-running world as a compatibility experiment.
A practical maintenance routine
- Before each update: record the current SevTech, Minecraft and Forge versions; stop the server cleanly; and create a dated world and configuration backup.
- After each update: start the server without players, read the complete console for errors, and connect with one test account before inviting the group.
- Weekly or after major activity: verify that backups exist outside the live directory and restore one to a temporary folder.
- When performance changes: note player count, exploration pattern, heap values and log warnings instead of changing several settings at once.
- For access control: review operator and whitelist entries, remove former players, and avoid granting administrative access to accounts that do not need it.
Recommended setup sequence
If you want a concise order of operations, use this checklist:
Quick Recap
- Choose SevTech: Ages 3.2.3 and confirm that every player agrees to use Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge 14.23.5.2854.
- Download the matching server-files package from the CurseForge files page.
- Create a dedicated directory and extract the archive without renaming its scripts or Forge files.
- Install 64-bit Java 8 and verify that the launcher uses that executable.
- Run the supplied launcher once, wait for
eula.txt, accept the EULA by changing the value totrue, and start it again. - Configure the server name, difficulty, view distance, operators, whitelist and port in the generated files.
- Set a starting heap such as
-Xms4G -Xmx8Gwhen the machine has enough memory, leaving headroom for the operating system. - Allow the configured TCP port through the firewall and router or provider network controls.
- Back up the new world, have one remote player test the connection, and then distribute the exact client installation details to the rest of the group.
