Choose the right kind of Rust server message
The phrase “server message” can mean several different things in Rust. A description shown before connection is not the same as a chat announcement, and neither one can detect a player’s first-ever join without a plugin.

Use the vanilla options when you need no per-player logic. Add Oxide/uMod only when timing, formatting, localization, or first-join detection is required.
What you need before changing messages
- Access to the server identity: Rust keeps identity-specific settings in the identity directory. The
server.cfgfile belongs in that identity’scfgfolder. Managed hosts expose this through a file manager or control panel; self-hosted servers expose it directly on disk. - Console or RCON access: You need one of these to run
saywhile the server is online. Keep the RCON password private and use the connection method documented by your host. - A restart or reload plan: File-based settings normally take effect on startup or after the host’s documented reload process. Do not assume that editing a file automatically changes a running server.
- A backup of configuration files: Save a copy of
server.cfgand any plugin JSON file before editing. This gives you a quick recovery path if a typo prevents a setting or plugin from loading.
Use plain text for the vanilla description and valid JSON for plugin configuration. A JSON editor or validator is useful because one missing quote, comma, or brace can stop a plugin configuration from loading.

Set a persistent server description with server.cfg
server.description is the built-in way to describe a server. It is server metadata shown in the server information or connection panel; it is not a timed message in chat and it does not trigger when a player joins.
1. Find the identity’s configuration folder
- Open the Rust server files through your host’s file manager, SFTP, or the local installation.
- Identify the active server identity directory—the directory named by your startup configuration, if your setup uses a custom identity.
- Open that identity’s
cfgfolder. - Find
server.cfg. Create a plain-text file with that exact name if it does not exist.
Do not edit a similarly named template belonging to another identity. A correctly formatted setting in the wrong identity will appear to have no effect because the running server never reads it.

Enter a line such as:
server.description "Welcome! Read the rules at example.com"Replace the example wording with your own server name, rules summary, community address, or connection instructions. Keep the value inside quotation marks when it contains spaces. This line controls what appears in the information panel; it does not create a repeating announcement.
3. Make the setting persistent
For a durable value, keep the line in server.cfg or place the equivalent setting in the startup script. Rust server configuration precedence documented by OxideMod is:

If your startup command contains a server.description parameter, changing only server.cfg will not win against it. Remove or update the higher-priority startup value instead.

4. Restart or reload through your host
Stop and start the server, or follow the managed host’s documented reload procedure. Facepunch’s server guidance recommends using server.cfg for most settings. The server.writecfg command does not save every possible parameter, so do not rely on it as a universal way to persist the description.
Send an immediate message to everyone with say
When you need to alert connected players now—such as a restart warning, event start, rule reminder, or emergency notice—use the vanilla say command from the server console or through RCON.
From the server console
- Open the live Rust server console in your host panel or terminal.
- Enter the command, including quotation marks around the message:
say "The server will restart in 10 minutes."- Submit the command and watch the console for confirmation or errors.
- Check an active player’s chat to verify that the broadcast arrived.
Through RCON
Connect with the RCON tool and credentials supplied by your host, then run the same command:
say "The event starts at 20:00 UTC."The command broadcasts to all players currently connected. It is not stored as a recurring message, and players who connect later will not see an old broadcast. Schedule future notices in your operations routine or use a suitable plugin rather than expecting say to repeat itself.
Protect the RCON account
- Never publish the RCON password in a server description, public documentation, screenshot, or chat message.
- Use the RCON port and password parameters required by your host’s documented access method.
- Change credentials if they have been exposed and remove saved credentials from shared computers.

1. Install and verify the framework
- Install the Oxide/uMod framework supported by your Rust server host or self-hosted build.
- Start the server and confirm that the framework loads without errors.
- Use a plugin build compatible with the current Rust server version. A Rust update can require a corresponding Oxide/uMod update, so check compatibility after every game-server update.
Installation details vary between self-hosted and managed servers. Follow the framework’s current installation procedure for your platform rather than copying paths from an unrelated host.
2. Locate the plugin configuration
After the plugin has loaded once, open the WelcomeMessages configuration file in the server’s config directory. On a typical uMod layout this is under the Oxide configuration directory. If the file is not created, inspect the plugin load log for an error before making a new file manually.
3. Set a delay and message
The documented configuration includes a WaitIntervalInSeconds value and a multiline, color-formatted Welcome string. A minimal configuration shape is:

}Use the generated configuration as the authoritative template for the message fields supported by your installed version. Set the interval long enough that the player has finished loading before the text appears, then add your rules, starter instructions, support channel, or map-specific guidance in the welcome field. Avoid putting credentials or private administration details in the message.
4. Add translations when needed
The listing documents localization under oxide/lang. For a multilingual server, create language-specific message files using the plugin’s generated keys and preserve the exact JSON structure. Test each language with a player whose client language matches the translation, because a malformed language file can affect only that locale and be easy to overlook.

5. Reload and test
- Save the JSON file with valid syntax and the encoding expected by your host.
- Reload the plugin using your host’s supported Oxide/uMod reload workflow, or restart the server if that is the only supported option.
- Join with a test account and confirm that the message appears after the configured delay.
- Reconnect once more to ensure the behavior is “every join,” not a one-time first-join trigger.
If the message does not appear, check the plugin log, the file name, JSON syntax, and framework compatibility before changing the text itself.

Noob Messages is designed for first-time joins rather than every connection. Its documented features include a configurable chat icon, a custom prefix, an option to announce the new player to everyone, and an option to send a welcome message directly to that player.
1. Install the plugin for your framework
- Confirm that Oxide/uMod is installed and compatible with the running Rust build.
- Install Noob Messages through the plugin-management method provided by your host or self-hosted setup.
- Restart or reload the plugin and inspect the log for a successful load.
2. Configure the first-join behavior
Open the generated NoobMessages file in the plugin configuration directory. Keep the generated property names and data types, then choose the behavior you need:
- Public announcement: Tell the current server population that a new player has arrived.
- Private welcome: Send onboarding text only to the new player.
- Both: Use the public and private options together when your community wants a greeting plus private instructions.
- Identity and style: Set the chat icon and custom prefix so the message is recognizable without pretending it is an official system notice.
The plugin determines whether the player is joining for the first time; do not try to reproduce that state with a static server.description or a manually scheduled say command.
3. Validate the first-join test
- Save the JSON after validating it.
- Reload the plugin or restart the server according to your host’s workflow.
- Use an account that has never joined the server to confirm the first-join announcement.
- Reconnect with the same account and verify that the first-join message does not repeat.
Do not use an established administrator account for this test unless the plugin provides a way to reset its stored first-join state. A returning account can make a correctly configured plugin look broken.
Understand configuration precedence and common conflicts
Several settings can appear to control the same text. Resolve conflicts in priority order rather than editing files at random.
Startup parameter overrides the file
If the launch command supplies server.description, it takes precedence over the line in server.cfg. Inspect the startup parameters in your host panel or service script when a saved file seems to be ignored.
Wrong identity directory
Rust can run multiple identities. A description placed in another identity’s cfg folder will not affect the active server. Confirm the identity named by the running startup configuration before troubleshooting syntax.
Confusing metadata with chat
A description visible in the connection panel is working as designed even if no chat line appears. Use say or a plugin when the requirement is player-facing chat.
Plugin and game-version mismatch
After a Rust server update, an older Oxide/uMod build or plugin may fail to load. Read the framework and plugin logs, update compatible components, and test before reopening the server to players.

Write messages players can actually use
Keep each message tied to its delivery method. The server description should answer “What is this server?” before connection. A say broadcast should contain one time-sensitive action, such as when a restart occurs. An automated welcome should give a new arrival the next two or three actions rather than a wall of rules.
- Put the server region, wipe cadence, or short rules pointer in the description if that information helps players choose a server.
- Include a precise time zone in maintenance broadcasts, for example “20:00 UTC,” so remote players do not have to guess.
- Use the delayed welcome to explain how to contact staff, where the rules are hosted, and what a new player should do first.
- Use first-join messaging for orientation that should not interrupt every returning player.
- Do not expose RCON ports, passwords, private moderation channels, or internal file paths in public text.
Operational checklist
- Decide whether the message belongs in server metadata, an immediate broadcast, an every-join welcome, or a first-join announcement.
- For metadata, edit the active identity’s
cfg/server.cfgand setserver.description. - Check startup parameters because command-line values override
server.cfg. - For a live notice, run
say "Your message here"in the server console or through authenticated RCON. - For automation, install a version-compatible Oxide/uMod framework and the appropriate plugin.
- Keep plugin JSON valid, preserve generated keys, and use the documented configuration and language directories.
- Reload or restart through the host’s supported workflow.
- Test with both a returning account and a genuinely new account when first-join logic is involved.
- Recheck the message after every Rust or framework update.
With those layers separated, a Rust server can present stable connection information, send urgent announcements on demand, welcome every player after loading, and reserve first-time greetings for genuinely new arrivals without overlapping messages.
