What a SkyFactory 4 server requires
SkyFactory 4 is a modded Minecraft Java Edition pack built for the Minecraft 1.12.2 generation of Forge. It is not a current-version vanilla server: the server, Forge loader, mods, scripts, and Java runtime must agree with one another. A successful installation therefore starts with the correct server archive and a compatible legacy Java executable, not with a generic modern Minecraft server jar.

The pack’s published description highlights automation, technology, magic, bacon resources, Sky Orchards resource trees, advancement tracking, optional prestige, and more than 30 world types. Those features increase the amount of data and background processing compared with a small vanilla map, so leave operating-system headroom instead of assigning every available resource to Java.
Download the correct server files
- Open the SkyFactory 4 project on CurseForge and select the Files tab.
- Download SkyFactory 4 – 4.2.4 Server Files, not the client-only profile and not an earlier release.
- Check that the archive is the server-files package before extracting it. The project page identifies 4.2.4 as the latest release, uploaded December 13, 2021. Its page metadata recorded 14,143,454 total downloads when accessed on October 14, 2026.
- Keep the server archive and the client installation on the same build. A player running another SkyFactory release can be rejected during mod negotiation or encounter missing-content errors.
Create a folder used only for this server, such as SkyFactory4-Server. Do not place it inside a player’s CurseForge instance. Separating the two makes it clear which directory contains the live world, server configuration, logs, and backups.

Install the Forge server pack
1. Extract to a writable directory
Extract the entire archive into the dedicated folder. Preserve the directory structure and file names supplied by the pack. Running an installer from inside a compressed archive, a read-only program directory, or a synchronized folder can prevent libraries and configuration files from being created.
2. Use the supplied installer or launch workflow
Server distributions can contain different script names and may include a Forge installation command rather than a single universal launcher. Run the installer or start workflow shipped in your download instead of copying a launch command from a different SkyFactory release. On a system with more than one Java installation, edit the script so its executable points to the compatible legacy runtime, then verify that executable directly with java -version (or the full path to that Java binary).

If the installer reports an unsupported class version, Forge fails before loading mods, or the script closes immediately, check the Java path first.
3. Start once and accept the EULA
- Run the supplied server start script or command once. The first run normally creates configuration files and stops when it cannot find an accepted EULA.
- Open the generated
eula.txtfile and read Mojang’s EULA. - If you agree to it, change only the acceptance value to
eula=true, save the file, and start the server again. - Leave the console open until Forge finishes loading mods and reports that the server is ready for connections. A window that closes during startup is not a completed installation; run the script from a terminal so the error remains visible.
The exact script names vary by server-pack distribution. The files included with the 4.2.4 archive are the authority for the launch workflow; do not mix scripts from another modpack.
Configure the world before it is generated
SkyFactory 4 uses Topography presets selected through server.properties. Stop the server before editing the file, and make the change before the permanent world is created. The official multiplayer instructions, edited August 22, 2019, document more than 30 world types and provide the exact preset and level-type pairs.

Other documented presets
The multiplayer wiki lists additional choices, including Lostcities, Flat, Hardcore, and other Topography presets. Copy the exact generator-settings and level-type values from that documentation for the preset you select. If a value is misspelled or paired with the wrong level type, the server can fall back to an unintended generator or fail during world creation.

Changing these properties after a world already exists does not safely transform that world. Back up the current save, then create a new world with the new settings if you need to change the generation mode.
Complete the first startup and let players connect
- Save
server.propertiesand start the server again. - Watch the console for Forge and mod-loading errors, then wait for the completed-startup message before asking anyone to join.
- Confirm the server’s listening port in
server.properties. Allow that port through the host firewall. If the machine is behind a home router, forward the same port to the computer’s local address; a port-forward rule aimed at the wrong device will leave the server invisible from outside the network. - Give local players the host’s LAN address and remote players the public address or DNS name that resolves to the router. Never publish the machine’s administrative credentials with the game address.
- Have every player install Minecraft Java Edition and the identical SkyFactory 4 4.2.4 client pack. They should not add, remove, or update individual mods unless everyone, including the server, is moved to a tested matching build.
For a private group, enable the vanilla whitelist and add only the intended players. Grant operator privileges sparingly: an operator can run commands that alter worlds, permissions, and server state.
Create separate islands and multiplayer teams
SkyFactory’s island and team systems are provided by the Topography and Together Forever components. The official multiplayer guidance notes that multiplayer servers may require separate islands for players; simply joining the same server does not automatically create an island for every account.

The Together Forever command has documented aliases; use the alias shown by the pack’s help output if your server build exposes one. Replace the bracketed or angle-bracketed player placeholder with the in-game name, and do not type the brackets themselves. Depending on permissions and whether the command is issued from the console or in-game, you may need operator access.

- Have the first player join after the world has finished loading.
- Run
/topography island home [player]to create or reach that player’s island. - Have the next player join and run the same command with that player’s name, or use
/topography island new [player]when a genuinely new island is required. - On the island that should be shared, run
/together invite <player>. - Have the invited player accept through the prompt or the command shown by the pack’s Together Forever help. Test permissions and shared access before building important automation.
Decide in advance whether your group wants one cooperative base or independent islands. A mistaken island choice can be corrected, but moving inventories and machines manually is riskier than deciding the team layout before construction begins.

Choose a hosting model
Self-hosting is appropriate when one person can maintain the legacy Java/Forge stack, keep the machine online, and manage networking and backups. Managed Minecraft hosting trades some file-level control for a control panel, automated provisioning, and support. No provider’s compatibility, region, resource limit, backup policy, uptime, or current price should be assumed without checking its present service details.

Whichever model you choose, ask one question before paying: does the service explicitly support the SkyFactory 4 4.2.4 server files and their Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge requirements? Generic “modded Minecraft” support is not proof that this legacy pack will install or remain online.

Back up the right data
Stop the server cleanly before copying files. Back up the complete world directory, server.properties, EULA and permission files, pack configuration folders, scripts, and any server-specific settings. A world-only copy may not reproduce the exact mod configuration needed to load it.

Keep at least one backup away from the live machine and periodically test restoring it to a separate directory. Label backups with the date and pack build so you can identify a known-good 4.2.4 state after a failed change.
Change one thing at a time
Before changing mods, configs, Java, or world-generation settings, stop the server and make a fresh backup. Apply one change, start the server, and inspect the complete console log. If several changes are made simultaneously, the first error can be hidden by later failures and rollback becomes ambiguous.

Do not mix pack versions casually
SkyFactory 4.2.4 is the release identified by the project page as latest. Updating only the client, only the server, or individual mods can produce missing-resource, registry, or handshake errors. Move the entire group to another release only after preserving the old world and confirming that the target release supports that save.
Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often
The installer or server exits immediately
- Run the script from a terminal instead of double-clicking it so the error remains visible.
- Check that the script calls the intended legacy Java executable, then run that executable’s
java -version. - Confirm that the archive was fully extracted and that the process can write beside the scripts.
- Remove only temporary installer output after taking a backup; do not delete the world or configuration files to hide an error.
The server stops at the EULA message
Open the generated eula.txt, review the license, set eula=true only if you accept it, save, and start again. If the file is recreated, the process is probably writing to a different directory than the one you edited; inspect the launch script’s working directory.
The wrong world appears
- Stop the server and inspect
server.propertiesfor exact spelling, capitalization, quotation marks, and the requiredlevel-type. - Remember that generator settings apply at world creation. If the world already exists, changing the line alone will not convert it.
- Restore the previous save if necessary, move it safely aside, and create a new world only after confirming the selected preset.
A player cannot join because of mod mismatch
Compare the player’s client build with the server’s 4.2.4 files. A different SkyFactory release, a manually updated mod, or a client-only installation can all produce the same symptom. Reinstalling the matching client profile is usually safer than copying individual jar files between installations.
Players time out or cannot see the server
- Test locally on the host first. A local failure indicates a server, Java, or Forge problem rather than router forwarding.
- Verify that the process is listening on the configured port and that the host firewall allows it.
- For a home connection, verify the router forwards the port to the host’s current local address and check whether the Internet service uses carrier-grade NAT.
- Give remote players the public address, not the private LAN address, and avoid changing addresses without updating them.
Lag appears after automation expands
Watch the server console and operating-system resource usage while players reproduce the slowdown. Large automated areas, many loaded chunks, and frequent item or machine updates can increase CPU, memory, and storage pressure. Reduce unnecessary always-loaded activity, keep backups off the live disk when possible, and increase the host’s resources only after identifying which resource is saturated.

The dependable route is to treat SkyFactory 4 as a legacy Forge deployment: use the official 4.2.4 server archive, pin the correct Java runtime, accept the EULA, set the world preset before generating the save, and keep server and client builds identical. Self-hosting maximizes control but leaves networking, backups, and uptime to you; managed hosting is worthwhile only when the provider confirms compatibility with this exact 1.12.2 pack and explains its resource, backup, and support limits.
