The reliable way to make a Cobblemon server is to use Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1, install either the Fabric or NeoForge loader, add the matching Cobblemon build and its required dependency, and give every player an identical client installation. Fabric is the official listing’s performance-oriented choice; NeoForge makes sense when another required mod is built for NeoForge.

Use the official Cobblemon modpack when you want a ready-made, synchronized setup. Use a plain Cobblemon installation when you want to choose the rest of the mod list yourself. The steps below cover both approaches, including RAM planning, client setup, lag reduction and the version mismatches that most often prevent a server from starting.

Cobblemon runs on Minecraft Java Edition. A Bedrock, console or mobile installation cannot use the Java server files described here. Build the server around Minecraft 1.21.1 and keep the Minecraft version, loader, Cobblemon release and dependencies aligned on both the server and every client.
The official Modrinth evidence available for this guide lists Cobblemon 1.7.3 as the newest verified release there, dated January 31, 2026, and identifies that release as Fabric-only for Minecraft 1.21.1. A separate search snippet mentioned a possible 1.8.1 build for both loaders, but that claim is not verified. Before downloading anything, open Cobblemon’s Versions tab and select a release that explicitly lists Minecraft 1.21.1 and the loader you intend to use. Do not infer compatibility from a version number alone.

Every item in this list must refer to the same Minecraft version:
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1
- Fabric or NeoForge, installed on the server and clients
- The Cobblemon build for that loader and Minecraft version
- The correct dependency for the selected loader
- Any matching modpack configuration, datapack or additional mod
Keeping one component on a different Minecraft version is enough to stop the server from loading or make a player’s client crash before joining.

Fabric or NeoForge?
Cobblemon provides builds for both loaders. The choice is mainly determined by performance goals and the other mods you plan to run.

Neither loader can be swapped after the fact by changing one file. A Fabric server needs Fabric loader files, Fabric API and Fabric-compatible mods; a NeoForge server needs NeoForge, Kotlin for Forge and NeoForge-compatible mods. If you change loaders, treat it as a new installation and test the world separately.

Choose a server installation style

For a first server, the official modpack is usually the least error-prone route because it supplies a known set of client files. Plain Cobblemon is more flexible, but every added mod creates another version and dependency that must match on both sides.
Requirements and preparation
Prepare a clean directory for the server rather than mixing it with an existing vanilla world or another modpack. Have the following ready:

- A computer or hosted instance capable of running a Java Minecraft server continuously.
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 for the administrator and each player.
- The selected Fabric or NeoForge installer and a Java runtime accepted by that loader.
- The Cobblemon server files for Minecraft 1.21.1.
- Fabric API for Fabric, or Kotlin for Forge for NeoForge.
- Enough memory for the number of players and the world-generation load.
- A backup location outside the live server directory.
Download every file from the same release entry or project version where possible. A dependency that is correct for another Minecraft release is still the wrong dependency, even if its name looks right.
Path A: install the official Cobblemon modpack server
This route is appropriate when the server should reproduce the official modpack’s client configuration rather than a hand-picked collection.

- Select the loader project. On Modrinth or CurseForge, choose the Cobblemon Official Modpack project for the loader you selected. The Fabric and NeoForge modpacks are separate projects, so do not download one while planning to run the other.
- Select Minecraft 1.21.1. Open the project’s versions list and choose a file that names Minecraft 1.21.1 and your loader. If several Cobblemon builds are listed, use the same build for the server and the client profile.
- Download the server package. The modpack can be obtained through the CurseForge app or the project’s server download. Extract it into a new, dedicated server directory. Do not run it from the client’s game directory.
- Run the supplied server installer or setup script. The installer creates the loader files, libraries and modpack structure. Use the launcher or script generated by that package rather than copying only the Cobblemon jar into an otherwise vanilla server.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA. Start the server once so it creates its files, then open
eula.txt. Changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save the file and start the server again. You must accept the EULA before the server will finish starting. - Wait for the first world creation. The initial run can take longer while libraries and terrain are generated. Stop the server using its normal stop command after it has completed, rather than closing the terminal, before making configuration changes.
- Give players the matching client profile. Every player should launch the official modpack client for the same loader, Minecraft version and Cobblemon release. That profile supplies the mod list, configs and datapacks expected by the server.
If the server stops during this process, read the first meaningful error in the log rather than the final shutdown message. Missing dependencies and wrong-version files are more useful clues than a generic “server stopped” line.
Path B: install a plain Cobblemon server
Use this path when you want Cobblemon without the full official modpack or intend to add a carefully selected set of compatible mods.
- Install the loader. Run the Fabric installer for a Fabric server or the NeoForge installer for a NeoForge server. Select Minecraft 1.21.1 and a server installation in the dedicated server directory.
- Check the loader’s generated files. Confirm that the installation created the loader libraries and the launcher used by that loader. Do not mix a Fabric launcher with a NeoForge directory.
- Create or open the
modsfolder. Place the Cobblemon jar for your loader and Minecraft 1.21.1 in this folder. - Add the required dependency. Fabric installations require Fabric API. NeoForge installations require Kotlin for Forge. The dependency must also be built for Minecraft 1.21.1. A missing or wrong-version dependency is the most common reason Cobblemon refuses to load.
- Start the server once. Use the loader’s generated launch command or script. Stop it normally after it creates the remaining folders and configuration files.
- Use a new world for the first installation. A new world is recommended when first installing Cobblemon. If you are testing an existing world, make a complete backup before allowing the modded server to open it.
- Add extra mods one at a time. After each addition, start the server and check the log. Install the same extra mod, version and dependency on every client if it is required client-side or affects synchronization.
Do not copy a client-only visual or interface mod into the server simply because it appears in a player’s profile. Keep the server’s mod list intentional and record every file and version so replacements can reproduce it.
Make the server reachable
A local server is reachable on the same network once it is running, but players outside that network need a route to the machine hosting it. That normally means allowing the server application through the computer’s firewall and configuring the router or host’s network rules for the Minecraft server port. Use the address and port supplied by your host or network configuration; never publish a private address as though it were a public one.

If you use a managed host, the provider normally supplies the address and a control panel for starting and stopping the instance. Confirm that its template is for Java Edition, Minecraft 1.21.1 and the same loader and Cobblemon build you installed on clients.
Install the matching client and join
Players cannot join with an unmodified vanilla profile. Before anyone connects, send them the exact loader, Minecraft version, Cobblemon build, dependency and modpack profile used by the server.

- Install the same Fabric or NeoForge loader as the server.
- Install the same Cobblemon build and dependency. For a modpack server, import or install the official modpack client instead of assembling files manually.
- Copy any server-required configuration, datapack or additional mod that the administrator has specified. A changed config can be as significant as a changed jar.
- Launch the matching profile once so it creates its client files.
- Open Multiplayer, choose Add Server or Direct Connection, enter the server address, and connect.
If the client crashes before the multiplayer screen completes the connection, stop changing random files. Compare the client and server lists line by line: Minecraft version, loader version, Cobblemon build, dependency versions, additional mods, configs and datapacks. A mismatch in any of those categories can block the connection.

There is no authoritative Cobblemon RAM number. Published hosting guides give conflicting starting points, and their figures are commercial recommendations rather than benchmark results. Use them as planning ranges, then watch actual memory use while players explore and Pokémon spawn.

A practical starting plan is roughly 6 GB for a small group, 8 GB for five to ten players and 12 GB when planning for 15 or more, while recognizing that these are guide ranges. Cobblemon spawns several Pokémon per player, so memory pressure can rise faster as the player count grows than it does in a typical lightly modded adventure world.
When choosing a host or machine, leave memory for the operating system and other services rather than assigning every available gigabyte to Java. Increase the allocation only after observing sustained memory pressure; extra RAM cannot repair a wrong dependency, an incompatible mod or a network problem.
Reduce lag before it becomes a complaint
Pregenerate terrain
One commonly suggested optimization is to pregenerate the intended play area with Chunky before inviting players. Generating terrain ahead of time moves the expensive chunk-creation work to a controlled maintenance window instead of making several players explore new areas simultaneously. Pregeneration consumes storage and time, so choose a boundary that matches the group’s actual play area.
Adjust Pokémon density
If the server becomes sluggish while several players are online, inspect the Cobblemon configuration for the Pokémon-per-chunk setting. Lowering that value reduces the number of entities the server must simulate and can improve tick performance, at the cost of fewer encounters. Change one setting at a time and test with the normal number of players.
Control exploration and additions
- Invite players after the first world-generation pass has completed.
- Keep the client and server mod lists minimal until the base installation is stable.
- Make a backup before changing world-generation or spawn settings.
- Record configuration changes so every client can reproduce settings that affect synchronization.
Common failures and precise fixes

How to update without breaking the world
- Stop the server normally and copy the entire world directory and server configuration to a separate backup location.
- Check the Cobblemon project’s Versions tab for a release that supports Minecraft 1.21.1 and your loader.
- Read the release’s dependency requirements before replacing files.
- Update the server and client profiles as a coordinated change. Do not update only the server and ask players to connect with the old profile.
- Start the updated server with the backup available, watch the log for dependency or registry errors, and test joining with one client.
- If the update fails, restore the previous server files and backup rather than repeatedly opening the world with a partially updated installation.
For a first Cobblemon deployment, a separate test world is safer than experimenting directly on a long-running community world. Once the loader, dependency and client profile have survived a complete join test, invite the rest of the group.
First-session checklist for playing together
- Confirm that each player can reach the server address with the intended profile.
- Walk away from spawn and verify that terrain generates without persistent tick lag.
- Check that Pokémon appear at the expected density and that interactions work for more than one player.
- Have every player disconnect and reconnect once; this catches client-only setup mistakes that a single connection can hide.
- Make a fresh backup after the first successful session and before installing additional mods or changing spawn settings.
Once those checks pass, the server is ready for normal exploration and multiplayer Cobblemon play. Keep one written record of the exact Minecraft, loader, Cobblemon and dependency versions; that record turns future troubleshooting from guesswork into a quick comparison.
