To host a Simply Lord of the Rings server, first choose one supported branch and keep its Minecraft version, Forge loader, client pack and server pack matched. Download that branch’s dedicated server ZIP from the pack’s CurseForge Files page, run it with a compatible Java installation, accept the EULA, and set level-type=middleEarth in server.properties before the world is created. Players on your home network can connect locally; friends elsewhere need firewall rules and router port forwarding, or you can use a managed Minecraft host instead.

Choose the Simply LOTR branch before downloading anything
The project currently has two different supported branches. They are not interchangeable: a 1.7.10 client cannot join a 1.16.5 server, and mixing Forge or pack releases commonly produces missing-mod errors or a server that starts without the modpack.

Before you install anything, ask every player to commit to the same row in the table. Record the exact pack release and Forge build, because “Legacy” and “Renewed” are separate mod sets rather than update channels for one shared world.
What you need for a self-hosted server
- A Windows, macOS or Linux computer that can remain on while people play.
- The matching Simply LOTR client pack for every player.
- The dedicated server ZIP for that same release.
- A Java runtime compatible with the Minecraft version; Java 8 is the documented choice for 1.16.5 and older.
- Permission to edit router and firewall settings if players will connect from outside your home.
- A separate folder for the server, with enough free disk space for logs, configuration and world backups.
The published setup material does not establish a universal RAM-per-player figure or a performance benchmark. Start with the pack’s supplied launch configuration, watch the server log and system memory, and change resource settings only when an observed bottleneck justifies it.

Download the correct dedicated server pack
- Open the Simply LOTR project’s CurseForge page and go to Files.
- Select the exact Legacy v1.7.2 or Renewed Beta 1 release your group will use.
- In that release’s Additional Files area, download the corresponding server-pack ZIP. CurseForge’s multiplayer guidance identifies this as the location for server files.
- Create a new folder used only by the server, such as
SimplyLOTR-Server, and extract the ZIP there. Do not extract it over a player’s.minecraftfolder.
Keeping the server directory separate makes it possible to back up world, server.properties, eula.txt, logs and configuration without accidentally copying client-only files. It also gives you a clean place to apply a later server-pack update.
Install Java and the Forge server runtime
Use Java 8 for these listed branches
CurseForge’s setup guidance states, “Java 8 for 1.16.5 and older.” Both branches listed here are at or below that boundary, so Java 8 is the appropriate starting runtime. If the exact Forge installer supplied for your selected release documents a narrower requirement, use that requirement instead of forcing a different Java version.

Check which Java executable your operating system will use before launching the server. A different Java installation earlier in the system path can make a correctly installed runtime appear to be missing. The important checks are that the command resolves successfully and that it reports Java 8 for these older Minecraft versions.
Install Forge into the server folder
If the server ZIP does not already include a complete Forge launch arrangement, download the Forge installer that matches the pack’s Minecraft version and required Forge build. From a terminal opened in the server directory, the Forge installation reference uses:

java -jar forge-x.xx.x-installer.jar --installServerReplace that filename with the installer for the exact Forge build selected by the pack. Do not substitute a Forge build for another Minecraft version. A 1.16.5 Forge installation and a 1.7.10 Forge installation have different mod and launch requirements even when their folder names look similar.
Complete the first launch and accept the EULA
- From the extracted server directory, run the supplied
run.bat,run.shor the Forge launch command created by the installer. - Allow the first launch to finish its initial file creation. It normally writes
eula.txtandserver.properties, then stops because the agreement has not been accepted. - Open
eula.txtin a text editor and changeeula=falsetoeula=true. Save the file. - Launch the same script or command again. A successful startup should keep the console running and create the normal world and log files.
This sequence follows Mojang’s Java server setup instructions. If no EULA file appears, you probably launched from the wrong directory or the Java/Forge process stopped earlier with an error; fix that launch error before editing other settings.
Make the world generate as Middle-earth
The distinctive Simply LOTR world setting is a server property, not a client-only option. Stop the server, open server.properties, and set this line exactly:
level-type=middleEarthThe pack listing’s instruction is: “If you’re starting a server, open the ‘Server Properties’ file and set the ‘level-type’ value to ‘middleEarth.’” Keep the capitalization and spelling shown above, save the file, and then start the server.

Make this change before the final world is generated. World-generation settings are applied as terrain is created; changing the property later does not retrofit chunks that already exist. If you tested with the wrong setting, stop the server, make a backup of anything you want to keep, remove or rename the test world, confirm level-type=middleEarth, and let the next launch create a new world.
Have players install the matching client
Every player must install the same Simply LOTR branch, release and Forge version used by the server. Give them the release name rather than an informal label such as “the latest LOTR pack,” because Legacy v1.7.2 and Renewed Beta 1 target different Minecraft versions.

- Legacy players use Minecraft 1.7.10 with the Legacy v1.7.2 pack and its matching Forge loader.
- Renewed players use Minecraft 1.16.5 with Renewed Beta 1 and its matching Forge loader.
- Do not add or remove mods casually. A client-side change can produce a missing-mod, registry or handshake error even when the server itself is healthy.
On the first connection, the client may download or build caches and can take longer than later starts. Have the player compare the displayed Minecraft, Forge and pack versions with the server administrator’s recorded values before troubleshooting the network.
Start the server and verify it locally
- Launch the server from its dedicated folder and wait until the console indicates that it is ready for connections.
- On the same computer, open the modded Minecraft client and connect to
localhost. - Confirm that the terrain is Middle-earth and that the expected Simply LOTR content loads.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console before making configuration edits or copying a backup.
A local localhost test separates mod or Forge problems from router problems. If local play fails, port forwarding will not fix it; first resolve the Java, Forge, pack or world-generation issue shown in the server log.

Let friends connect from outside your home
Use the server port consistently
Java servers commonly use port 25565. The actual value is the one in your server.properties; if you change it, use the new value in the router rule, firewall rule and the address you give players. Forward only the port you actually use.
Configure the host firewall
Create an inbound rule allowing the selected Java server port and the Java process used to run Forge. The exact screens differ by operating system, but the rule must apply to the network profile on which the host is operating. A router rule alone is not sufficient if the computer firewall silently drops the connection.
Forward the port to the correct computer
- Give the server computer a stable address on your home network, either with a static local address or a router DHCP reservation.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the server’s TCP port to that local address. Use the same external and internal port unless you have a specific reason to translate it.
- Restart the server and test from a connection outside the home network, such as a friend’s network or a mobile hotspot. Testing only from inside the same LAN can give a misleading result.
- Give trusted friends your public address and port. Do not publish it broadly.
Mojang’s guidance notes that Java servers may require firewall and port-forwarding configuration. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, the router may have no publicly reachable address and ordinary forwarding may never work. In that case, a managed host or a suitable tunnel service is often simpler than repeatedly changing local settings.

The Simply LOTR listing recommends a managed provider and says to choose a plan of at least 4 GB. That is a provider recommendation attached to its hosting offer, not a universal minimum for every self-hosted installation. Treat it as a starting point, verify the provider’s current pack support and pricing, and do not infer a player-count performance guarantee from that number.
Some hosting panels advertise one-click modpack installation, Forge support and SFTP access. Before ordering, confirm that the exact CurseForge branch and release you selected can be uploaded or installed, that you can edit server.properties to set level-type=middleEarth, and that you can download independent backups.
Backups and routine administration
Back up before upgrades
Stop the server cleanly, copy the complete server directory or at least the world, configuration and mod files to separate storage, and label the backup with the Minecraft, Forge and pack versions. A backup made while files are actively changing can be incomplete, so do not copy a live world as your only backup.

Change one setting at a time and keep a short record of what changed. Preserve the original server-pack files so you can compare a modified configuration with a clean extraction when a future update fails.
Watch logs before allocating more memory
Read the server console and log files for repeated errors, ticking-time warnings, missing registries or connection failures. The available project material does not provide a controlled RAM benchmark by player count, so increasing memory blindly is not a substitute for identifying the actual fault.

The server starts as vanilla or says mods are missing
- Confirm you launched the Forge script or command, not a vanilla server JAR.
- Check that the extracted server pack is the dedicated server ZIP for the selected release.
- Compare every client’s Minecraft, Forge and Simply LOTR versions with the server.
Java or Forge launch errors appear immediately
- Verify that the active Java executable is Java 8 for these older branches.
- Confirm the Forge installer and launch files match Minecraft 1.7.10 or 1.16.5 as appropriate.
- Run the command from the server directory so relative paths to libraries and configuration resolve correctly.
The world is ordinary Minecraft instead of Middle-earth
- Stop the server and open the server’s own
server.properties, not a client configuration file. - Set
level-type=middleEarthexactly and save it. - If the world was already generated with another type, rename or remove that test world only after making a backup, then start again.
Friends cannot connect, but localhost works
- Confirm the server is still listening and that the configured port is the one being tested.
- Allow that port and the Java process through the host firewall.
- Check that router forwarding targets the current LAN address of the server computer.
- Test from outside the home network and check whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections.
The server lags or crashes
- Reduce view distance and simulation distance in the server configuration.
- Remove unneeded client-only content from the server only when the pack documentation explicitly permits it.
- Inspect logs for the first error in the failure sequence instead of changing several settings at once.
- Do not treat the advertised 4 GB hosting recommendation as a measured requirement or guaranteed player capacity.
A concise launch checklist
- Selected either Legacy v1.7.2/1.7.10 or Renewed Beta 1/1.16.5.
- Downloaded the matching dedicated server ZIP from CurseForge Files and extracted it into a separate folder.
- Installed a compatible Java runtime, starting with Java 8.
- Installed or launched the matching Forge server build.
- Changed
eula=falsetoeula=true. - Set
level-type=middleEarthbefore generating the world. - Tested locally with
localhost. - For remote friends, opened the firewall and forwarded the configured port to the correct LAN address.
- Recorded the exact pack and Forge versions and made a clean backup before major changes.
