All the Mods 10 Server Settings Explained: RAM, Java 21, Config Files and Hosting

For a reliable All the Mods 10 (ATM10) server, use the server pack that matches your exact client release, run it with Java 21, and plan memory from 10 GB for a small group up to 16 GB or more for larger communities. Edit startup values in settings.cfg, vanilla gameplay in server.properties, and mod behavior in the active world’s serverconfig folder. The guide below shows where each setting belongs, how to install the pack, and how to choose between self-hosting and managed hosting.

What ATM10 requires before you change any settings

ATM10 is a large modded Minecraft pack built on NeoForge. Its official project information places it in the Minecraft 1.21 ecosystem, while the project repository identifies the 1.21.1 line. Treat the precise ATM10 release as the compatibility key: the client pack, server pack and NeoForge loader must all correspond to that release. A client on a different pack build can fail to connect even when both installations appear to be “ATM10.”

  • Download the server files listed for the exact ATM10 release your players will install.
  • Have every player install that same release and loader.
  • Use a dedicated server directory so worlds, configuration files, logs and backups are kept together.
  • Back up the directory before changing the pack version or replacing server files.

ATM10 is substantially heavier than a vanilla server. World generation, automation, view distance and several players exploring different chunks at once all increase CPU, memory and storage pressure. The published memory figures are planning recommendations, not guarantees of a particular tick rate or a promise that every world will perform identically.

Install the official server pack

Windows installation

  1. Download the server pack attached to your chosen ATM10 release.
  2. Extract every file into a dedicated folder, such as D:MinecraftATM10. Avoid running the server from a temporary archive location.
  3. Open that folder and run startserver.bat.
  4. On the first run, the launcher creates the EULA file and other generated files, then stops or reports that the EULA must be accepted.
  5. Open eula.txt, change the line to eula=true, save it, and run startserver.bat again.

Linux installation

  1. Extract the matching server pack into a directory owned by the account that will run Minecraft.
  2. Make the launcher executable, for example with chmod +x startserver.sh.
  3. Run ./startserver.sh once to generate the EULA and initial configuration.
  4. Edit eula.txt so it contains eula=true, then start the server again with ./startserver.sh.

Keep the original server folder intact when updating. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration files, and only then replace the pack files. A backup lets you roll back if a loader change, mod update or configuration edit prevents the world from starting.

Use Java 21 and verify which Java the launcher starts

The current ATM10 multiplayer guidance specifies Java 21. Installing Java 21 is not enough when a host also has Java 8, 17 or another runtime: the launcher may continue to use the operating system’s older default.

Check the runtime before troubleshooting mods

  • Run the Java version command from the same account and shell that starts the server, such as java -version.
  • Inspect startserver.bat or startserver.sh to see whether the launcher sets a Java executable or reads an environment variable.
  • If several Java installations exist, point the launcher’s Java path or the variable named by that script to the Java 21 executable.
  • Restart the server after changing the path and confirm the startup log reports Java 21.

Do not assume the Java selected by a control panel, service manager or interactive terminal is the one used by the launcher. A server that silently starts with the wrong major version can fail before NeoForge loads, or produce misleading mod errors.

How much RAM does an ATM10 server need?

The AllTheMods multiplayer guide accessed in 2026 gives these starting bands. They describe the Java heap allocation for the server, not the total physical memory that the operating system and other services need.

Concurrent players Guide’s Java version Recommended server RAM Planning qualification
2–5 Java 21 10 GB Starting recommendation for a small group
5–15 Java 21 12–14 GB Increase within the band as exploration and automation grow
15 or more Java 21 16 GB or more Use additional headroom for a large, active community

The guide’s ranges overlap at 15 players; choosing the higher 16 GB-or-more band at that boundary is the safer interpretation. These figures are not an independent benchmark. Chunk generation, machines, farms, view distance, simulation distance and simultaneous exploration can push a world beyond the starting allocation. Leave capacity for the operating system and monitoring tools instead of assigning every installed gigabyte to the JVM.

Storage and CPU matter as well

  • Use NVMe storage where possible. ATM10 creates and reads many region, entity and mod data files, and fast storage helps with world generation and save operations.
  • Increase CPU capacity as the player count rises. More RAM cannot compensate for a processor that cannot complete the server tick in time.
  • Watch actual heap use, garbage-collection pauses and tick-time warnings after players begin exploring. Raise memory only when those measurements and the workload justify it.

Set startup values in settings.cfg

The AllTheMods Server-Scripts documentation places launcher variables in settings.cfg. Put one SETTING=VALUE pair on each line, with no spaces around the equals sign. The supplied scripts read this file when they start the server.

Allocate the heap with MAX_RAM

MAX_RAM controls the JVM’s maximum allocation. Set it to the amount you chose for your player band, using the syntax already present in the file. For example, a value representing 10 GB belongs in settings.cfg, not in the batch or shell launcher. Keep physical-memory headroom for the operating system and any panel, backup process or monitoring software.

Choose a world type with DEFAULT_WORLD_TYPE

DEFAULT_WORLD_TYPE changes the world type used when a new world is created. It does not retroactively convert an existing world. Back up the server and understand the effect on terrain generation before creating a replacement world with a different value.

Do not edit the launcher scripts

The official Server-Scripts documentation states: “Do not modify ServerStart.bat or ServerStart.sh”. Keep custom values in settings.cfg so pack updates can replace the scripts without erasing your configuration. If you need a different Java executable, use the path or environment-variable mechanism exposed by the script rather than rewriting its commands.

Configure vanilla gameplay in server.properties

Use the generated server.properties file for controls supplied by Minecraft itself. Common settings include:

  • Difficulty: sets the world’s vanilla difficulty.
  • Gamemode: selects the default mode for players who join.
  • Whitelist: restricts joining to approved player names when enabled.
  • Max players: limits simultaneous connections at the server level.
  • View distance: controls how many chunks the server sends around players.
  • Simulation distance: controls how far entities and game logic continue ticking.
  • MOTD: changes the message displayed in the multiplayer list.
  • Port: selects the network port on which the server listens.

Change one property at a time, save the file, and restart when the setting requires a restart. Keep a copy of the last working file before pack updates. Lowering view or simulation distance can reduce CPU and memory pressure, but it also reduces the active world area players see or simulate; test the trade-off with your group.

Change mod-specific settings in the active world’s serverconfig

NeoForge mods commonly generate server-side configuration beneath the world directory. The path includes the actual world name, so replace worldName below with the folder used by your server:

saves/worldName/serverconfig/

Edit the configuration for the live world, not a similarly named template elsewhere in the pack. Paths and available keys can change between ATM10 releases, so make a backup before editing and stop the server if the mod’s format requires an offline change.

FTB Essentials: /home, /back and /rtp

ATM10’s FAQ identifies saves/worldName/serverconfig/ftb-essentials.snbt as the file for FTB Essentials behavior. This is where you change /home behavior or re-enable /back and /rtp if they are disabled in your installation. Open the file with a text editor that preserves plain text, locate the relevant keys, save a copy of the original, and restart the server so the mod reloads the configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If a command is unavailable, first confirm that FTB Essentials is loaded and that you edited the serverconfig belonging to the running world.
  • If the command works for operators but not ordinary players, check the mod’s permission settings rather than changing vanilla command settings.
  • If an update regenerates the file, compare it with your backup and reapply only the intended values; do not blindly overwrite a newer configuration.

A practical order for applying settings

  1. Pin the release: write down the exact ATM10 version, Minecraft line and NeoForge version used by clients.
  2. Install Java 21: verify the executable selected by the launcher, especially on a multi-Java host.
  3. Start once and accept the EULA: run the supplied Windows or Linux launcher, set eula=true, then restart.
  4. Set the heap: choose a memory band, enter the value through settings.cfg, and leave system headroom.
  5. Apply vanilla rules: edit server.properties for whitelist, difficulty, distances, player limit, MOTD and port.
  6. Apply mod rules: edit the active world’s serverconfig, including ftb-essentials.snbt when teleport and home commands need changes.
  7. Restart and test: connect with a matching client, test permissions and commands, generate chunks with a small group, and inspect logs before inviting everyone.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Neither approach is universally faster or cheaper. The deciding question is whether you want to operate the machine and network yourself or pay for a service that exposes the controls ATM10 needs.

Consideration Self-hosting Managed hosting
Control Direct access to the operating system, server directory, Java executable and hardware Control depends on what the provider’s panel and file access expose
Setup effort You install Java 21, configure the firewall, run the launcher, maintain backups and perform updates The provider handles much of the machine operation, while you still configure the pack and world
Hardware headroom You choose NVMe storage, CPU capacity and physical RAM Verify the assigned RAM, CPU share and storage type before ordering
Updates and rollback You control timing and can retain complete local copies Check whether the panel supports version pinning, large server-pack uploads and downloadable backups
Compatibility checks You can inspect and edit every script and file Confirm support for Java 21, NeoForge and the exact ATM10 server pack

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already have reliable hardware, fast storage and an upload connection.
  • You are comfortable with firewall rules, port forwarding, Linux or Windows administration, and scheduled backups.
  • You need unrestricted access to settings.cfg, server.properties and world-specific configuration.

Choose managed hosting when

  • You want the provider to handle machine availability, operating-system maintenance and much of the backup work.
  • You need a web panel for starting, stopping and monitoring the server.
  • You have confirmed, before paying, that the service accepts the large ATM10 upload, offers Java 21 and NeoForge, provides enough RAM and lets you pin the required pack release.

A managed panel that hides the server directory can prevent legitimate ATM10 changes. Ask specifically whether you can edit settings.cfg, server.properties and saves/<world>/serverconfig, and whether backups include the world and those files.

Troubleshooting common ATM10 startup and settings failures

The server exits immediately

Check the Java version first and verify that the launcher actually invokes Java 21. Then review the latest log for a missing file, an incomplete extraction or a loader mismatch. Re-extract the matching server pack into a clean directory if files were overwritten during an update.

Players receive a mod or version mismatch

Compare the exact ATM10 release, Minecraft version and NeoForge loader on the client and server. “ATM10” alone is not a sufficient version identifier.

The server has lag despite enough assigned RAM

Look at CPU saturation, chunk-generation load, view distance, simulation distance and the number of players exploring separately. More heap cannot fix a CPU bottleneck; reducing distances or adding CPU capacity may help. NVMe storage also matters during generation and saves.

/back or /rtp is missing

Confirm that FTB Essentials is present, then inspect saves/worldName/serverconfig/ftb-essentials.snbt for the relevant enablement and permission values. Make sure worldName is the active world’s directory and restart after saving.

Your setting disappears after an update

Restore the pack’s original launcher scripts and put startup changes in settings.cfg. Keep versioned backups of server.properties and the world’s serverconfig files, compare the new defaults after an update, and reapply only settings that remain valid for the new release.

Operational checklist

  • Client and server use the same pinned ATM10 release, Minecraft line and NeoForge loader.
  • Java 21 is installed and confirmed in the launcher log.
  • The EULA is accepted with eula=true.
  • MAX_RAM is set in settings.cfg, with host memory left over for the operating system.
  • ServerStart.bat and ServerStart.sh remain unmodified.
  • Vanilla rules are in server.properties; mod rules are in the active world’s serverconfig.
  • FTB Essentials changes are backed up in ftb-essentials.snbt.
  • Backups include the world, configuration files and a copy made before every pack update.
  • Firewall, port and whitelist settings are tested with a real player connection.
