In Counter-Strike 2, open Settings, choose Game, set Enable Developer Console (~) to Yes, then press the console key in-game. On an English/US keyboard, that key is the tilde (~) key. If your keyboard layout uses a different physical key, use the key assigned to the console control instead.

What the CS2 developer console does
Valve defines the developer console as “a text-based input/output interface to execute commands or change global settings in a game.” In practical terms, it is a text panel inside Counter-Strike 2. You can open that panel while the game is running, type a supported command or setting, and read the resulting output. The console is separate from the ordinary settings pages: enabling it makes the interface available, while pressing its shortcut actually opens it.

- Enablement: the game option permits the console to be used.
- Opening: a keyboard shortcut displays the text interface after it has been enabled.
Changing the option without pressing the shortcut does not display a panel automatically. Conversely, repeatedly pressing the shortcut cannot open the console while the option remains disabled.
Enable the console through CS2’s settings
The in-game toggle is the official and most reliable method. Follow these steps from the main CS2 interface:

- Launch Counter-Strike 2. Wait until the game reaches its normal menu or another state in which the settings button is available.
- Click the gear icon. This opens the game’s Settings screen.
- Open the Game tab. CS2 separates game-related options from its other settings categories, so the console control is not found under keyboard or video options.
- Find the Game section. Look for the option labelled Enable Developer Console (~).
- Set the option to Yes. The change enables the developer-console feature. Make sure the value actually reads Yes; leaving it at No keeps the console disabled.
- Return to the game. You can close the settings screen or continue into a match, practice session, or another playable screen.
The wording in the option is useful because it tells you both what the switch controls and which shortcut the game expects by default. The parenthesised tilde is a key hint, not a second setting that must be typed into the menu.
Open the console after enabling it
Once the toggle is set to Yes, press the console shortcut while CS2 is running. For an English/US keyboard configuration, Valve identifies the default key as the tilde (~) key. On a standard US layout, the tilde is produced with the key that also carries the backtick (`) symbol, immediately above the Tab key.
The distinction between the symbol and the physical key matters. The game is looking for the keyboard control associated with the console shortcut; it is not asking you to type a tilde into a chat box or a settings field. Press the key once to open the console. Pressing the same shortcut again generally closes the panel, allowing you to return to the underlying game view.
If the panel appears, the feature is enabled and the shortcut is working. You should see a text-based interface rather than a new standalone application or a Steam window. From there, commands can be entered according to the syntax supported by CS2. This guide does not assume that any particular command is available: command names and behavior can change with game updates, modes, or server permissions.

Why the tilde key may not work
The tilde instruction is specifically tied to English/US keyboard configurations. Physical keyboards and operating-system layouts differ, and the key that produces ~ on one layout may produce another character or occupy a different position on another. A non-US layout can therefore make the expected shortcut appear to do nothing even though the console is enabled correctly.
Check that the toggle is really enabled
Return to the settings path and confirm that Enable Developer Console (~) still shows Yes. If it has reverted to No, the shortcut cannot work. Do not troubleshoot the keyboard until this prerequisite is satisfied.

Try the equivalent key for your layout
Use the key that your keyboard layout treats as the console or tilde control rather than assuming it is in the US position. Some layouts place the relevant character elsewhere, and some require a modifier to produce the symbol. The important test is the game’s assigned console control, not whether the keycap visibly shows a tilde.
Use the game’s keyboard controls
If you cannot identify the equivalent key, consult CS2’s keyboard controls and the linked Valve guidance for changing the console key. Reassigning the control to a key that is easy to reach on your layout removes the ambiguity created by different physical arrangements. After changing the binding, test it in the game rather than relying on the old US-keyboard shortcut.

Check for keyboard or input interference
Make sure CS2 has focus when you press the shortcut. If another window is active, the keystroke may be sent elsewhere. Also check whether a keyboard utility, alternate input method, or operating-system language switch is changing the active layout. Switch back to the layout you intend to use, return focus to CS2, and test the assigned key again.
Distinguish a missing panel from a command problem
If the console panel opens but a command produces no useful result, the shortcut itself is working. Treat that as a command, permission, syntax, or version issue rather than an enablement issue. Conversely, if no panel appears at all, continue checking the toggle, layout, focus, and binding before investigating commands.
Official toggle versus Steam launch options
The in-game toggle should be your first choice because it is the documented path exposed by CS2’s own interface. A Steam Community guide also reports that adding -dev and -console to CS2’s Steam launch options can enable the console. That is secondary community guidance, not the primary in-game procedure.
These approaches differ in purpose and certainty:

Adding launch options does not remove the keyboard-layout issue. Even if the flags cause console support to be available, you still need the correct console shortcut for your layout to display the panel. Likewise, launch options do not replace the need to distinguish enabling the feature from opening it.

If you try the community method, record what you changed so it can be removed cleanly if startup behavior changes after a CS2 update. Because launch-option behavior is update-sensitive, the community report should not be treated as a guarantee for every future build.
Enablement, opening, and command entry: three different checks
Many apparent console failures come from combining three separate stages into one. Check them in order:

- Shortcut check: the key assigned to the console must be pressed while CS2 has focus. On English/US layouts, this is the tilde key by default; other layouts may require another key.
- Command check: after the panel is visible, the text you enter must be valid for the current CS2 version and context.
This sequence gives you a useful diagnostic boundary. If step one fails, adjust the setting. If step two fails, investigate the keyboard layout or binding. If steps one and two succeed but the requested action does not occur, investigate the command itself rather than repeatedly changing the enablement option.

- CS2 is fully launched and has keyboard focus.
- The gear icon opens Settings.
- The Game tab is selected.
- Enable Developer Console (~) is set to Yes.
- You are pressing the shortcut associated with your active keyboard layout.
- You have tested the key in a normal game screen rather than a different application.
- If the panel opens, you are troubleshooting the command separately from the console shortcut.
Completing these checks prevents a layout problem from being mistaken for a disabled feature and prevents a command problem from being mistaken for a shortcut problem.
What can change after a CS2 update
Menu labels and launch-option behavior are update-sensitive. A future Counter-Strike 2 patch may move a control, alter how a flag is handled, or change command availability. If a previously working setup stops working, first inspect the current Settings > Game controls and confirm the enablement value. Then test the current layout-specific shortcut before adding launch options.
The core logic remains straightforward: enable the feature in CS2, use the key assigned to the console for your keyboard layout, and investigate commands only after the text panel opens. Keeping those stages separate makes the console easier to enable and easier to repair when a patch or keyboard change interrupts the workflow.
