For a reliable Homestead server, download the official server pack from CozyStudios, run it with Minecraft 1.20.1 and the loader named by the current pack listing, and begin with 6–8 GB of allocated memory for a small group. You can self-host at no hosting cost, but your computer must remain on and friends outside your home network will need port forwarding. A rented Minecraft host costs money but usually offers an always-on server and a one-click Homestead installation.

What you need before installing
Homestead is a modpack, so every player must use the same Minecraft version, mod-loader family, and pack release as the server. Gather these items before you create a world:

- A legal Minecraft Java Edition installation that supports version 1.20.1.
- The exact Homestead release you intend to run, downloaded from the CozyStudios distribution page rather than an unrelated mirror.
- A computer with enough unused memory and CPU capacity to run both Minecraft and the server. Windows commonly consumes 4–6 GB of memory on its own, so do not allocate all physical RAM to Java.
- Java in the version required by the server pack. One installation guide mentions Java 17, but that requirement has not been confirmed against the current official pack documentation; check the pack’s own instructions before choosing a Java installer.
- For self-hosting, permission to change your router and firewall settings.
- For a rented server, a provider whose control panel explicitly supports Minecraft 1.20.1 and the loader used by the current Homestead release.
Make a separate folder for the server. Keeping it away from your client’s installation makes backups, updates, and troubleshooting much easier.
Download the official Homestead server files
The Homestead server pack is distributed through the CozyStudios website; it is not distributed as a server pack on CurseForge. The package described by the creator includes the mod files, a prepared server.properties, startup scripts for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and a HOW-TO-RUN.md guide.

- Open the current Homestead download page maintained by CozyStudios.
- Choose the server-pack download that corresponds to the client release your group will use. Do not assume that the newest client download and an older server archive are interchangeable.
- Create a new, empty server directory such as
Homestead-Server. - Extract the archive directly into that directory. Avoid an extra nested folder such as
Homestead-Server/Homestead-Server/, which can cause scripts to look for files in the wrong location. - Read
HOW-TO-RUN.mdbefore changing files. The supplied scripts and variables file are the pack author’s intended launch method.
Keep the original archive somewhere safe. If an update damages the live installation, it gives you a clean starting point without downloading an unverified copy.
Confirm Minecraft 1.20.1 and the loader
Available setup guides agree that Homestead targets Minecraft 1.20.1. The server and every client must use that Minecraft version and the same Homestead pack release. A player running another release can see missing-mod errors, registry mismatches, or a disconnect during login.
The loader is less certain. Dedicated Minecraft and MinecraftHub describe the pack as Fabric, while ModReady describes it as Forge. Because those claims conflict, do not download a standalone server JAR based on a third-party article. Check the loader named on the current CozyStudios or Modrinth listing and use the loader bundled with the official server pack.
How to verify a client before connecting
- Open the launcher profile and confirm Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Confirm that the profile’s loader matches the official listing, including its major version where the listing specifies one.
- Confirm the visible Homestead pack version is identical to the server’s release.
- Do not add optional client mods until a clean, matching installation connects successfully.
If the server log reports that a mod requires Fabric but the server was started with Forge, or the reverse, stop and replace the installation with the loader from the official listing. Trying to copy individual loader libraries between packs usually creates a harder-to-diagnose mix.
Choose self-hosting or a rented server

Self-host when the group plays at predictable times and someone can keep the machine maintained. Rent when players need an always-on world or nobody wants to configure a router. Neither route removes the need for matching client and server files.

Self-host Homestead step by step
1. Prepare the server directory
Extract the official archive into the dedicated directory and make sure the supplied scripts, mods folder, configuration files, and documentation are all at the same level. Do not launch from a temporary download folder; operating-system permissions and automatic backups are easier to manage in a permanent location.
2. Check Java and launch with the supplied script
Open a terminal or command prompt in the server directory and check the installed runtime with java -version. Install the Java release specified by the current Homestead instructions if the command is missing or reports an incompatible version. The pack includes platform-specific startup scripts; use the Windows, macOS, or Linux script supplied in the archive instead of inventing a different classpath.
On macOS or Linux, a downloaded script may need execute permission. From the server directory, use chmod +x on the supplied script, then run it. If macOS blocks the file, allow the script in System Settings only after confirming that it came from the official archive.
3. Accept the Minecraft EULA and complete the first launch
The first launch normally creates or reveals an EULA file and stops. Read the license, change the acceptance value only if you agree, and run the same supplied script again. Allow the first startup to finish generating configuration files before changing settings. A first launch can take longer while mods are being initialized.

JAVA_ARGS="-Xmx8G -Xms4G"In that example, Java may grow to 8 GB and starts with 4 GB. Adjust the values to your machine and player count; do not copy them blindly. Leave enough memory for the operating system, the Minecraft client if it runs on the same computer, and other services. A machine with 16 GB total memory should not normally reserve nearly all of it for the server.
5. Configure the server properties
The server pack includes a prepared server.properties. Review the world name, difficulty, game rules, whitelist settings, message of the day, and the port shown in that file. Change one setting at a time and keep a backup of the original. If you change the port, every player must use the new port in the address you share.
6. Test locally before inviting friends
Start the server and wait until the console reports that it is ready for connections. From the same computer, connect using the local address offered by your Minecraft client; from another device on your home network, use the server computer’s private address. A successful local test separates mod or Java problems from router problems.
7. Allow the process through the computer firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the Java process or the server port selected in server.properties. Limit the rule to the expected network profile where your operating system allows it. If the server works locally but another device on the same network cannot connect, check this rule before changing the router.

Players outside your home need the server port forwarded from the router to the server computer’s private IP address. Reserve that private address in the router so it does not change after a reboot. Forward only the port the server actually uses, and do not expose unrelated administration services. Misconfigured forwarding can expose a device or an entire home network, so consult your router’s documentation and remove the rule when you stop hosting.

9. Share the correct address
Give local players the private address and remote players your public address plus the server port. Test from a network that is not your home Wi-Fi, such as a phone’s cellular connection, before announcing the address to the group. If your internet provider changes your public address, players will need the new value unless you have arranged a separate, reliable address service.
10. Shut down and back up safely
Use the console’s normal stop command and wait for the save to finish; closing the terminal or powering off the computer can corrupt a modded world. Copy the world directory and configuration files to another disk on a schedule that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose. Keep at least one backup from before every pack update.
How much RAM does Homestead need?
There is no single published number that fits every world. Mod count, view distance, chunk generation, automation, exploration, and simultaneous players all affect memory and CPU use. The following figures come from separate 2026 guides and should be treated as starting points rather than guarantees.

For a small private group, begin at 6 GB if the host machine has adequate headroom and move toward 8 GB when exploration or player count increases. If the server repeatedly reaches its maximum allocation, increase memory only after checking CPU load, view distance, and runaway mods. More memory cannot fix a loader mismatch, a broken configuration, or an overloaded processor.

Many game panels provide a modpack catalog. The documented one-click path is:
- Open the host’s server control panel.
- Choose Modpacks.
- Filter the catalog by Modrinth.
- Search for Homestead.
- Select the release that matches Minecraft 1.20.1 and the loader shown by the current official listing.
- Choose Install and allow the panel to replace or create the server files as it warns.
- Set the memory limit in the panel, then start the server and watch the console for completion.
- Upload or create a whitelist, set the world options, and make a backup before inviting players.
Do not assume that a catalog entry is current merely because it has the Homestead name. Compare its Minecraft version, loader, and pack release with the clients your group will use. If the panel offers only a Forge entry while the official listing says Fabric, contact the host or choose a plan that supports the correct loader rather than mixing files manually.
Common failures and fixes
The server stops immediately
- Run
java -versionand compare the result with the version required by the pack instructions. - Read the first error in the console, not just the final shutdown line.
- Restore the original variables file if you changed Java arguments, then add changes one at a time.
- Confirm that you launched from the directory containing the supplied scripts and mods.
Players see a missing-mod or registry-mismatch error
Compare the exact pack release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and loader on both sides. Remove extra client mods and reinstall the official client profile if necessary. Do not solve the problem by copying a random server JAR from a third-party guide, because the loader conflict reported by different guides makes that especially risky.

The server runs locally but friends time out
- Verify the operating-system firewall rule.
- Verify that the router forwards the same port listed in
server.properties. - Check that forwarding targets the server computer’s current private IP address.
- Test from a genuinely external network.
- Ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are restricted if every setting is correct.
There is lag or the server runs out of memory
Check the console and operating-system monitor while several players explore. Reduce view or simulation distance, avoid running a client and server with no memory headroom on the same PC, and review newly added mods. Increase the allocation within the RAM ranges above only when the machine still has room for the operating system. If CPU usage is saturated, adding RAM alone will not solve the delay.
A world is damaged after an update or crash
Stop the server, preserve the damaged directory, and restore the most recent known-good backup to a separate test copy. Confirm that the pack release and loader are unchanged before reconnecting players. Never test recovery by overwriting your only copy.
Practical operating rules for a long-running server
- Record the Homestead release, Minecraft version, loader, Java version, memory arguments, and port in a small administrator note.
- Back up the world before updating the pack, Java, or major configuration files.
- Use a whitelist for a private friends’ server and grant operator privileges only to people who need them.
- Restart during a planned maintenance window rather than killing the process during active world saves.
- Keep the server computer’s operating system and Java installation updated, but test updates on a backup world first.
- Watch disk space as the world expands; a full disk can be as damaging as insufficient RAM.
- Tell players which address is private and which is public, and avoid posting a public address in places where strangers can join.
