Short answer: Portainer Server runs as a container on a machine you control. That machine needs a current Docker installation, a persistent volume for Portainer’s database and configuration, and network access to TCP port 9443 for the web interface. Port 8000 is needed only for Edge compute features. Portainer’s current documentation does not publish a minimum CPU or RAM figure, so common numbers such as 1–2 vCPUs and 1–2 GB of RAM are planning estimates, not official requirements.

What Portainer Server actually requires
Portainer is not a separate appliance that needs a dedicated physical server. Portainer Server is deployed as a container on a host that already runs a container engine. For the standard Community Edition deployment, the host must provide four things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A current, supported Docker installation and permission to administer it (including
sudoon the machine where Portainer Server runs). - An ARM64 or x86_64 processor architecture.
- Persistent storage for Portainer’s database and configuration.
- Firewall and routing rules that allow the ports required by your deployment.
The official requirements pages do not state a CPU minimum, RAM minimum or fixed disk minimum. Hardware sizing therefore depends on the host operating system, Docker itself, the number of environments Portainer manages and whether you use cluster or Edge features.

Docker and compatible engine versions
Portainer’s Community Edition compatibility table lists Docker Engine 28.5.1 and 29.7.1, Kubernetes 1.34 through 1.36, and Podman 5.8.5. Use the current compatibility table for the edition and release line you install: Portainer requirements and prerequisites.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
For a Docker-based installation, the practical interpretation is straightforward: install and maintain a current Docker Engine first, then deploy Portainer Server as a container. The host also needs administrative access; Portainer specifically calls for sudo on the machine running the server.
CPU architecture
Community Edition is listed for both x86_64 and ARM64. That covers conventional Intel/AMD servers, many cloud instances and a large range of ARM single-board computers and NAS devices. Check the host architecture before choosing an image or installation method; an otherwise suitable machine with an unsupported architecture will not satisfy the documented requirement.

Portainer ports: 9443, 8000 and Edge-agent connectivity
Port exposure is often the deciding factor when a server sits behind a firewall, reverse proxy or cloud security group. Portainer’s defaults are:
| Port | Direction and purpose | When it is required |
|---|---|---|
| TCP 9443 | Portainer Server web UI | Required for normal browser access to the interface. |
| TCP 8000 | Portainer Server TCP tunnel | Optional; required when you use Edge compute features with Edge agents. |
| TCP 9001 | Edge Agent endpoint | Must be reachable on the Edge Agent host from Portainer Server for a standard Edge Agent deployment. |
| TCP 30778 | Edge Agent endpoint exposed through a Kubernetes NodePort | Use this instead of 9001 when the Edge Agent is deployed with that Kubernetes NodePort arrangement. |
The 9443 and 8000 defaults are quoted in Portainer’s requirements documentation: official port requirements. An Edge Agent does not need an open inbound port of its own in the general case, but TCP 9001 (or 30778 for the Kubernetes NodePort option) must be reachable on the agent from the Portainer Server. The STS and LTS pages describe those Edge rules in more detail: STS Edge requirements and LTS Edge requirements.
Open only the paths your design uses. A single Docker host that you manage locally normally needs 9443; opening 8000 without using Edge features adds exposure without providing a benefit.

Persistent storage is a hard requirement
Portainer Server stores its database and configuration in a persistent volume. Do not treat the container’s writable layer as the database location: replacing the container without a persistent volume can remove Portainer’s state.
Single Docker host
Docker’s default volume behaviour is node-local. A local volume is appropriate when Portainer Server and the Docker engine remain on one host and that host’s disk is part of your backup plan. Back up the volume together with the host or use storage tooling that captures it consistently.
Kubernetes or other clustered deployments
Kubernetes defaults to node-local storage as well. If Portainer can move between nodes, the database volume must be available wherever the workload can run. Portainer recommends implementing cluster-wide persistent storage at the infrastructure level rather than assuming the default node-local volume will follow the pod.

Disk performance guidance
For performance-sensitive deployments, Portainer describes SSD-level storage as ideal: about 3.5 MB/s throughput, 30,000 IOPS or more, and write latency under 10 ms. These are performance targets, not a minimum disk capacity, and the documentation does not publish a year for the figures. A small SSD-backed volume is generally a better fit than a large, slow spinning disk when the host also runs other containers.

What Portainer officially publishes
The current, STS and 2.39 LTS requirements pages specify platform, storage, Docker and networking prerequisites but do not publish a CPU floor, RAM floor or minimum number of gigabytes. A hardware seller likewise notes that there is no universal official RAM minimum or published CPU floor: ZimaSpace’s Portainer hardware requirements note. Treat that statement as a vendor observation, not as Portainer documentation.
Common planning estimates
Two 2026 setup guides offer estimates rather than official limits. They describe roughly 2 GB of available RAM and 2 vCPUs for a comfortable host, while noting that test installations can run with less. The same guidance gives an estimated floor of 1 core, 1 GB of RAM and 1 GB of storage, with a recommendation of at least 2 cores, 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of storage:
Best Value
| Figure | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1 core, 1 GB RAM, 1 GB storage | Guide’s estimated minimum; not an official Portainer requirement | Tech Insider setup guide; AICYBR setup guide |
| 2+ cores, 2+ GB RAM, 10+ GB storage | Guide’s recommended starting point; not an official Portainer requirement | Tech Insider setup guide; AICYBR setup guide |
| About 2 vCPUs and 2 GB RAM free | Planning estimate for the host; the guides say testing can use less | Tech Insider setup guide; AICYBR setup guide |
How to apply the estimates
Budget for the host operating system, Docker daemon and every workload before allocating anything to Portainer. Portainer’s own control-plane footprint is usually small compared with the containers it manages, so a host that is already near its memory limit is a poor candidate even if Portainer itself starts successfully. For a new small installation, 2 vCPUs and 2 GB of free RAM is a sensible planning baseline drawn from the estimates above; it should not be presented as a Portainer-imposed minimum. Reserve approximately 10 GB of SSD space if you want room for the Portainer volume, logs and routine administration, while sizing the host’s total disk for your application images and data separately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing the right type of server
| Decision | Suitable choice | Requirement to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | x86_64 cloud VM, physical server or ARM64 device | Community Edition lists both x86_64 and ARM64; confirm the exact image and engine support for the release you select. |
| Storage | SSD-backed local disk for a single host; shared persistent storage for a cluster | Portainer’s database volume must survive container replacement and, in a cluster, node changes. |
| Topology | Single Docker node for straightforward administration | Only the host’s local volume and 9443 generally need planning. |
| Topology | Kubernetes or multi-node environment | Provide infrastructure-level persistent storage and account for the cluster’s own resource requirements. |
| Remote Edge management | Portainer Server plus Edge Agents | Allow 8000 for the server tunnel and 9001 on agents, or 30778 when using the Kubernetes NodePort option. |
A tiny ARM64 board can meet the documented architecture requirement, but its available RAM, storage reliability and Docker support still determine whether it is a sensible production host. Conversely, a large VM does not compensate for missing persistent storage or blocked ports.
Operating-system support: what is confirmed
Portainer’s official requirements pages describe Docker on Linux as the setup path. The pages cited here do not provide a complete, formal list of supported host operating systems. Some third-party guides mention Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux-family systems, openSUSE, Windows 10/11 with WSL2, Windows Server, macOS and Raspberry Pi OS, but those lists are not confirmed by Portainer’s own requirements documentation. Treat the Docker engine and architecture as the decisive checks, and verify a specific operating system against the release documentation before standardizing it.
Docker host settings that can block deployment
SELinux
Portainer’s requirements guidance says SELinux should be disabled on the Docker host. If policy requires SELinux to remain enabled, deploy Portainer with Docker’s --privileged flag as directed by the documentation. This increases container privileges, so it should be a deliberate security decision rather than a troubleshooting shortcut.
Rootful versus rootless Docker
Docker should run as root for the documented Portainer setup. Rootless Docker can work, but Portainer notes limitations and extra configuration. Confirm those limitations against the version-specific requirements page before choosing rootless mode for a production environment.
Pre-deployment checklist
- Identify the release line. Choose the current, STS or 2.39 LTS documentation that matches the Portainer image you will run.
- Check architecture. Confirm the host reports x86_64 or ARM64 and that the chosen Docker image supports it.
- Verify Docker. Run
docker versionand confirm the engine is a current compatible release; ensure you havesudoaccess. - Plan the data volume. Create or select persistent storage for Portainer’s database and configuration. On a cluster, verify that the storage can follow the workload between nodes.
- Check disk quality. Prefer SSD-backed storage, especially when the host manages many environments or other busy containers.
- Set host security deliberately. Decide whether SELinux can be disabled; if not, follow Portainer’s privileged deployment requirement. Confirm whether Docker is rootful or rootless.
- Configure firewalls. Permit TCP 9443 to the Server UI. Add TCP 8000 only for Edge compute, and permit TCP 9001 on each Edge Agent (or TCP 30778 for the Kubernetes NodePort design).
- Leave headroom. After the operating system and Docker workloads are counted, aim for roughly 2 vCPUs and 2 GB of free RAM as a practical starting estimate, not a vendor minimum.
- Test persistence. Before production use, restart or replace the Portainer container and verify that its configuration and database remain present on the mounted volume.
Troubleshooting requirement-related failures
| Symptom | Likely requirement issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser cannot open Portainer | TCP 9443 blocked or wrong address | Check the host firewall, cloud security group and the address/port published for the Server UI. |
| Edge environment will not connect | Missing tunnel or agent reachability | Use TCP 8000 for Edge compute and verify that 9001 on the agent, or 30778 for a Kubernetes NodePort, is reachable from the Server. |
| Settings disappear after recreation | No persistent volume or incorrect mount | Verify that the Portainer database/configuration path is backed by a persistent Docker volume or cluster storage. |
| Container fails under a hardened host | SELinux policy or rootless-Docker limitation | Apply the documented SELinux approach, or review the extra configuration required for rootless Docker. |
| Kubernetes deployment loses access after rescheduling | Node-local storage | Replace the default local volume with infrastructure-level persistent storage. |
| MicroK8s add-on silently fails | Insufficient CPU, RAM or disk on a node | Check node resources before enabling the add-on; MicroK8s documents this failure mode at its known-issues page. |
Bottom line for common server choices
For a single Docker host, choose any reliable x86_64 or ARM64 machine with a current Docker Engine, persistent SSD-backed storage and TCP 9443 reachable. A host with about 2 vCPUs and 2 GB of free RAM is a reasonable starting plan based on independent estimates, but Portainer has not published those figures as minimums. If you need Edge management, add the 8000 tunnel and the appropriate agent port. If you run Portainer on Kubernetes, solve persistent, cluster-wide storage first and size the nodes for Kubernetes and your workloads rather than for Portainer alone.
