In 2026, the large expense is buying the host computer: Home Assistant Green now has a $199 suggested US price, while electricity is usually only a few dollars per year. The optional Home Assistant Link service is the main recurring cost at $65 per year before tax. A do-it-yourself Raspberry Pi build can work well, but its price advantage largely disappears after storage, case and power supply are added.

The cost breakdown at a glance
A self-hosted installation has three separate cost buckets:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Hardware: a dedicated appliance such as Home Assistant Green, or a computer you assemble yourself.
- Electricity: the host runs continuously, but its low power draw keeps the annual energy bill small.
- Optional online services: Home Assistant Link adds managed remote access, off-site backups and voice integrations. You can run Home Assistant without this subscription.
Your first year is therefore mostly an equipment purchase. After that, a system without the optional service has very little operating cost.
Home Assistant Green hardware pricing in 2026
Current suggested retail price
Nabu Casa lists Home Assistant Green at a suggested retail price of $199 in the United States and €179 in the euro area in 2026. The device launched at $99 in 2023; the suggested US price was raised to $199 in January 2026, with the announcement updated on April 24, 2026.

The company says the change reflects manufacturing costs: the component price of building a Home Assistant Green has nearly doubled since we started making the device.
The figures are suggested prices rather than a guaranteed checkout price. US dollar suggestions exclude sales tax, euro suggestions include applicable taxes, and individual retailers can charge more or less. European listings in particular can differ substantially from the suggested amount.
What Green includes—and what it does not
Green is a ready-to-run Home Assistant host, so you do not have to source a board, storage device, enclosure or power adapter separately. It does not include a built-in Zigbee or Thread radio. If your devices use either protocol, budget for a compatible USB coordinator; a specific universal price is not established, so check the current price of the radio model and regional retailer you choose.
Building Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi
Raspberry Pi 4 comparison
A third-party 2026 guide cited a ready-to-run Raspberry Pi 4 system at about €140, compared with the €179 suggested price for Green. That is an indicative market figure, not an official Raspberry Pi price, and availability changes by country. The apparent saving is therefore relatively small before you account for your time and any missing accessories.
Raspberry Pi 5 parts you must add
A Pi 5 installation normally needs an NVMe solid-state drive, a case and a 27 W power supply in addition to the board. Once those parts are included, the guide estimates the complete build is roughly as expensive as Green. Exact totals depend on local prices, storage capacity and whether you already own compatible parts.

The Pi approach gives you more freedom to select storage and replace individual components. Green trades that flexibility for a single supported appliance. Neither choice removes the need for a radio coordinator when you use Zigbee or Thread devices.
Electricity: the small ongoing cost
Measured power ranges
A 2026 measurement guide reports Home Assistant Green at about 1.7 W while idle and about 3 W under load. A 2026 guide estimates a Raspberry Pi 5 at roughly 2.7–3.0 W idle. Displays, USB devices, Ethernet activity and other peripherals can raise actual consumption, so treat these as host-only estimates rather than a promise for every installation.
Annual calculation
Running 24 hours a day for a year is 8,760 hours. Multiplying watts by those hours and dividing by 1,000 gives annual kilowatt-hours. Using electricity rates of $0.15 and $0.30 per kWh illustrates the range below:
| Host and condition | Annual energy | Cost at $0.15/kWh | Cost at $0.30/kWh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green at 1.7 W idle | 14.9 kWh | $2.24 | $4.47 |
| Green at 3 W load | 26.3 kWh | $3.95 | $7.89 |
| Pi 5 at 2.7 W idle | 23.7 kWh | $3.55 | $7.11 |
| Pi 5 at 3.0 W idle | 26.3 kWh | $3.95 | $7.89 |
Across the measured ranges, that is approximately $2–$8 per year for Green and $4–$8 for a Pi 5 at the stated tariffs. Your utility rate and the equipment connected to the host determine the actual bill. Electricity is a small share of total ownership cost compared with the initial hardware purchase.

Home Assistant Link: optional subscription cost
Plans and trial
Home Assistant Link (the service formerly called Home Assistant Cloud) costs $6.50 per month or $65 per year in US pricing, before tax. The annual option is approximately two months cheaper than paying monthly for a full year. New subscribers receive a 31-day free trial.
| Billing option | Published US price | Tax treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $6.50 per month | Tax not included |
| Annual | $65.00 per year | Tax not included |
What the subscription provides
- Managed remote access to your Home Assistant instance.
- Off-site backups.
- Alexa and Google Home voice-control integrations.
- Cloud speech processing.
The subscription is not required for local automations, dashboards or device control on your home network. Remote access can instead be self-managed with a VPN, port forwarding combined with dynamic DNS, Cloudflare Tunnel or Tailscale. Those alternatives require their own setup and operational decisions; their prices are not included in the figures here.

Nabu Casa’s support information says the amount can vary with your location and currency. For context, a community user reported €7.50 per month or €75 per year in the European Union including VAT; that is an individual regional report, not a universal euro price. Check the checkout page for your country before subscribing.
The Cloud name is scheduled to change to Home Assistant Link on December 2, 2026. Nabu Casa says this is a name change for the same subscription, not a separate product or an additional fee.

Worked first-year budgets
The following totals combine the published hardware suggestion, the optional annual plan where shown and the electricity ranges above. They are arithmetic illustrations before any applicable purchase tax unless the regional hardware price already includes it.
| Setup | Approximate first-year total | What drives the range |
|---|---|---|
| Green without Link | $201–$207 | Green hardware plus roughly $2–$8 of annual electricity |
| Green with Link annual plan | $266–$272 | Hardware, $65 annual service and roughly $2–$8 electricity |
| Pi 5 DIY | Roughly comparable hardware outlay to Green, plus electricity | Board, NVMe SSD, case, 27 W supply and local component prices |
These totals exclude the cost of optional Zigbee or Thread hardware, shipping, sales tax on US purchases and any accessories you add. They also do not claim to represent an average household budget; no independent published survey establishes a typical Home Assistant cost.

Costs that can change your total
Radio coordinators
Green has no integrated Zigbee or Thread radio. A USB coordinator is an additional purchase for those networks. The amount varies by model, protocol support and region, so do not treat an unverified generic price as part of the base Green total.
Accessories and peripherals
For a Pi build, storage, enclosure and power supply are essential parts rather than optional extras. USB devices, powered hubs, displays and high-speed networking can increase both purchase price and electricity use. Green avoids most of this parts-list complexity because it is sold as a complete appliance.
Best Value
- Only mount plastic mount is included. Home assistant device is not included.
- Made In USA from High Quality Materials.
- Secure Mounting — Uses #6 flat head screws (Not Included) for a stable, reliable installation.
- Easy Access Ports: Design ensures all bottom ports are fully accessible for power, network, and peripheral connections.
- Cooling-Friendly Design: Open structure allows airflow around cooling fins to help maintain optimal operating temperature.
Taxes, shipping and retailer differences
The US suggested prices are pre-tax. The euro Green suggestion includes applicable taxes, but shipping and retailer markups can still alter the checkout total. Compare the delivered price in your own country rather than converting currencies at the published suggestions.
Green or Raspberry Pi: which cost profile fits?
| Decision factor | Home Assistant Green | Raspberry Pi build |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront effort | One ready-to-run appliance | Choose and assemble board, storage, case and power supply |
| 2026 hardware economics | $199 US / €179 suggested price | Pi 4 example about €140 ready to run; Pi 5 is roughly comparable after required parts |
| Power estimate | 1.7 W idle, 3 W load | Pi 5 about 2.7–3.0 W idle before peripheral effects |
| Expansion | Less component-level flexibility | More choice of storage and replaceable parts |
| Zigbee/Thread | Requires an external coordinator | Also requires an external coordinator unless your chosen hardware supplies one |
Choose Green when predictable setup and a single supported box matter more than squeezing the last amount out of the parts budget. Choose a Pi when you already own compatible hardware, want to select every component or are comfortable maintaining the operating system and storage.

How to estimate your own annual cost
- List the host hardware. Use the delivered local price for Green, or add the Pi board, NVMe SSD, case and 27 W supply for a Pi 5.
- Add protocol hardware. Include a Zigbee or Thread USB coordinator if your devices need one; do not assume it is built into Green.
- Choose your remote-access approach. Add the Link subscription only if its managed access, backups, voice integrations and cloud speech are worth the fee to you.
- Calculate electricity. Multiply measured watts by 8,760, divide by 1,000 and multiply by your utility’s per-kWh rate. Use your smart-plug reading if peripherals are attached.
- Separate one-time and recurring costs. Hardware and radios are generally one-time purchases; electricity and any Link plan recur.
Common budgeting mistakes
- Using the old $99 Green price: that was the 2023 launch price, not the 2026 suggestion.
- Comparing a bare Pi board with a complete appliance: storage, enclosure and a suitable power adapter must be included for a working Pi 5 system.
- Assuming the cloud service is mandatory: local Home Assistant operation does not require Link.
- Ignoring regional tax treatment: US suggestions exclude tax, while the euro Green suggestion includes applicable taxes.
- Budgeting a fixed electricity figure for every setup: attached USB devices, networking and local tariffs can move the result outside the host-only estimate.
- Expecting one universal Link price: currency, country and VAT affect the amount shown at checkout.
Bottom line for 2026
For a straightforward purchase, budget the local equivalent of Home Assistant Green’s $199 US or €179 euro-area suggestion, then add only the radio hardware your devices require. Expect roughly a few dollars per year for electricity. Home Assistant Link is optional; at the published US annual rate it is the principal recurring expense, while a Pi 5 is no longer an automatic bargain once its SSD, case and 27 W power supply are counted.
