To host FiveM on a VPS, rent a supported Windows or Linux virtual server, install and launch FXServer, complete its built-in txAdmin setup, register a Cfx.re server key, and allow the game and administration ports through both host and provider firewalls. Use a dedicated non-root account, persistent process supervision, backups, and restricted panel access before inviting players.
What a FiveM VPS server actually requires
A VPS gives you an internet-reachable virtual machine rather than a preconfigured game server. You are responsible for the operating system, FXServer artifact, firewall, resources, updates, backups, logs, and recovery. In return, you control the files and configuration instead of being limited to a host’s preset panel.

The official txAdmin prerequisites are a supported Windows or Linux host, a Cfx.re account, and a server registration key. A recipe or framework that uses a database also needs database connection details. The provider must give you terminal or startup access and a public network path; a machine that cannot receive inbound traffic cannot host a public server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Supported host: Windows or Linux VPS suitable for the current FXServer artifact.
- Administrative access: SSH or equivalent terminal access on Linux, or console/startup access on Windows.
- Cfx.re identity: An account to link to txAdmin and create the registration key.
- Writable storage: Space for FXServer, the
txDatadirectory, resources, logs, and backups. - Network control: Ability to open ports in the VPS operating-system firewall and the provider’s firewall or security group.
- Persistent execution: systemd, tmux, or another supervisor so the process survives an SSH disconnect.
- Operational controls: A non-root service account, private management access, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
No source in the current documentation publishes a universal CPU, RAM, player-capacity, or performance figure. The resources you need depend on the recipe, scripts, database workload, map assets, and number of concurrent players, so choose a VPS from measured usage rather than an advertised slot number.

VPS or managed FiveM hosting?
Both models can run FXServer and expose txAdmin. A self-managed VPS is a control choice, not a promise of better performance. Managed hosting can remove routine server administration, while a VPS leaves every operating-system and network decision with you.
For a self-managed FiveM deployment, Godlike.Host gaming VPS offers full root access on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D in Ashburn, Portland, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Singapore. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).
| Decision area | Self-managed VPS | Managed game hosting |
|---|---|---|
| FXServer and artifacts | You download, extract, update, and roll back the artifact. | The provider may supply FXServer and handle artifact availability. |
| Ports and firewall | You configure host and provider firewall rules, including game and panel access. | The provider may preconfigure ports and give you a txAdmin link. |
| Operating system | You perform updates, hardening, disk maintenance, and recovery. | Operating-system administration is usually part of the service, subject to its policy. |
| Resources and mods | Direct access to resources, server.cfg, txData, and supporting services. |
Freedom depends on the host’s resource, script, and file-access rules. |
| Backups | You choose schedules, destinations, retention, and restore tests. | Backups may be included, limited, or sold separately; verify retention and restore access. |
| Database | You supply connection details and administer the database or service. | Some plans include a database; others require an external one. |
| Support | You troubleshoot FXServer, Linux or Windows, networking, and resources. | The provider may support the panel and infrastructure, but not every custom script. |
| Migration | You can move your backed-up txData and resources when the destination is compatible. |
Confirm that files and databases can be exported before committing. |
| Cost and capacity | Provider-specific monthly price and usable capacity are not established here. | Provider-specific price, player-slot guarantees, and affiliate terms require direct verification. |
Choose a VPS when you need operating-system access, custom services, unrestricted resource management, or a portable deployment and can handle administration. Choose managed hosting when reducing maintenance is more important than low-level control. In either case, check geographic latency, DDoS and network protections, database support, backup policy, txAdmin access, and the exact migration procedure.

Use a dedicated service account
Do not run a production FXServer as root or as the Windows administrator account. Create a dedicated account for the server, give it ownership of the FXServer directory and txData, and grant administrative rights only through the normal operating-system mechanism when maintenance requires them. Keeping the process non-root limits the damage from a compromised resource or configuration mistake.
Update the operating system
Apply current security updates before downloading the artifact. Install the extraction utility and the process-management tools appropriate to your operating system. Reboot if the operating system requires it, then verify that you can reconnect through your normal management path.

Plan storage and recovery
Place the server in a writable directory with enough room for the artifact, resources, logs, and temporary recipe files. Treat txData as application data: back it up before redeploying a recipe, changing a major configuration, or moving to another VPS. A useful backup includes the active server.cfg, resources, database export when applicable, and the txAdmin data directory. Store at least one copy outside the VPS so a failed disk or deleted instance does not remove the only recovery copy.
Design firewall access before enabling it
List the SSH or remote-management port you use, the game endpoint, and the txAdmin panel port. Add the management rule before enabling or tightening the host firewall. The cited Linux setup guidance specifically warns that enabling UFW without first allowing SSH can lock you out. Apply the same thinking to a provider firewall or security group: a rule in only one layer is not enough.

Use the current recommended artifact from the official Cfx.re server-download path. Download it on the VPS or transfer it to the machine, then extract it to the writable directory owned by the dedicated server account. Keep old artifacts in a controlled backup location if you need a rollback.
Linux first launch
- Change to the extracted FXServer directory as the dedicated account.
- Run
./run.sh. - For this first launch, do not append
+exec server.cfg. Starting without that argument causes FXServer to start the bundled txAdmin first-boot panel. - Read the URL and one-time PIN printed in the console. Keep the process running while you open that URL from your administration computer.
Windows first launch
- Open the extracted FXServer directory using the account that will own the server files.
- Run
FXServer.exe. - As on Linux, omit
+exec server.cfgfor the initial boot so the bundled txAdmin setup appears. - Copy the URL and one-time PIN shown by the console and use them to complete setup.
txAdmin is not a separate resource to download: it is included with FXServer. If you start with an explicit +exec server.cfg, the first-boot panel may not appear as expected; stop the process and launch the artifact without that argument.
Complete txAdmin first boot
Open the exact address printed by FXServer. Do not substitute localhost unless the browser is running on the VPS itself; from your own computer, use the VPS address and the panel port printed by the console.

- Enter the one-time PIN shown in the FXServer console.
- Link the txAdmin owner to your Cfx.re account.
- Set the txAdmin backup password and accept the applicable platform and txAdmin terms.
- Choose a server name that identifies this instance.
- Select a FiveM recipe. The basic CFX default recipe is the simplest baseline for a new installation.
- Select the data directory. Keep the location documented and included in your backup plan.
- Open the recipe deployer and provide the requested registration key and, if the recipe needs one, database connection details.
Keep the initial setup PIN private. The txAdmin documentation advises allowing panel access only through the firewall or private access path you intend to use. Do not paste the PIN, backup password, registration key, or database password into a public support channel or commit them to a resource repository.
Create the Cfx.re registration key
Sign in to the Cfx Portal and create a server key for the instance. Copy the key into the txAdmin deployer, then run the selected recipe. When deployment completes, save the configuration and start the server from txAdmin.
In a manual configuration, the license value is represented by sv_licenseKey in the loaded server.cfg. Confirm that the profile you edited is the profile FXServer actually loads; changing an unused file will not change the running instance. Treat the key as a secret and replace it through the Cfx Portal if you believe it has been exposed.
Open the correct network ports
The management panel and player endpoint are different services. The official txAdmin reference gives TCP 40120 as the default panel port. The cited Linux VPS guidance identifies 30120/TCP and 30120/UDP as the standard game endpoint. A player connection can fail even when the panel works, or the panel can be exposed accidentally while the game port is correctly configured.
| Function | Protocol and port | Where to allow it | Recommended exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| txAdmin management panel | TCP 40120 by default | Host firewall and provider firewall, unless you deliberately change the panel configuration | Restrict to your administration network, VPN, or other private access path. |
| FiveM game endpoint | TCP 30120 and UDP 30120 in the cited Linux guidance | Host firewall and provider firewall | Publicly reachable when you intend to accept players. |
| SSH or other administration | Your provider’s configured management port | Host firewall and provider firewall | Allow only the source networks you need; add the rule before enabling UFW or equivalent filtering. |
Verify the actual endpoint in the active configuration and console output if you changed defaults. Never assume that opening 30120 makes txAdmin reachable, or that opening 40120 makes the game joinable. After changing firewall rules, test from outside the VPS network and check both the provider’s security-group view and the operating-system firewall.

Make the server survive SSH logout and reboots
Running ./run.sh or FXServer.exe in an ordinary interactive window is useful for first boot, but it ties the process to that session. Closing SSH, losing a terminal, or rebooting the VPS can stop the server.
Use a supervised service for production
On Linux, create a systemd service owned by the dedicated server account, configured to start after the network is available, restart on failure, and write logs where you can inspect them. On Windows, use an equivalent service or startup mechanism that runs under the dedicated account. The exact unit or service syntax depends on your distribution and installation path; the important properties are automatic startup, controlled shutdown, restart behavior, and a clear working directory.
Use tmux for an interim deployment
A detached tmux session is suitable while you are testing resources or waiting to build a formal service. Start FXServer inside the session, detach without terminating it, and reconnect later to inspect the live console. tmux does not replace backups, firewall controls, or a restart policy, so move to a supervisor before treating the server as production.
Monitor logs and resource health
Keep the txAdmin live console and operating-system logs available to the administrator. Watch for repeated resource errors, failed database connections, authentication failures, disk exhaustion, and restart loops. A server that is technically running but cannot write logs or save data is already in a recovery state.
Recommended Free Tools
Secure and maintain a production deployment
- Panel access: Keep TCP 40120 private or tightly source-restricted. Do not expose the initial PIN or backup password.
- Account separation: Run FXServer and resources as the dedicated non-root account.
- Secrets: Protect
sv_licenseKey, database credentials, txAdmin credentials, and provider API tokens. - Updates: Patch the operating system and review FXServer artifact updates during a maintenance window. Keep a known-good artifact for rollback.
- Backups: Back up
txData, resources, configuration, and databases on a schedule, then test restoring them to a separate location. - Change control: Record resource versions, configuration edits, recipe choices, and firewall changes so you can identify the last known-good state.
- Capacity planning: Measure CPU, memory, storage, network, script latency, and database load under your own workload. Published material for this setup does not establish a universal player limit.
- Access review: Remove former administrators, rotate credentials after staff changes, and review provider firewall rules periodically.
Advanced txAdmin and multi-server configuration
For advanced provider or multi-server deployments, the txAdmin environment reference dated 11 October 2026 identifies TXHOST_* variables as the current configuration mechanism and notes that several older ConVars are deprecated. Configuration behavior is version-sensitive, so check that reference again after txAdmin upgrades rather than copying an old environment-variable example.

Use separate txData directories when running multiple servers. This keeps administrator data, profiles, and state from colliding between instances. Give each instance its own working directory, configuration, ports, logs, and backup set. Avoid reusing one directory merely because the artifacts are identical.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The txAdmin panel does not load
- Confirm that FXServer was launched without
+exec server.cfgfor first boot. - Use the exact URL printed by the FXServer console.
- From a remote browser, replace an inappropriate
localhostaddress with the VPS address. - Check TCP 40120 in both the host firewall and provider firewall, unless you intentionally changed the panel port.
- Confirm that the FXServer process is still running and that no other service occupies the panel port.
Players cannot connect
- Check the txAdmin console to confirm the server is running and has completed startup.
- Verify that the registration key is valid and that the active profile contains the expected
sv_licenseKey. - Confirm that
server.cfgis the configuration actually loaded by this instance. - Allow 30120/TCP and 30120/UDP at both firewall layers when using the standard Linux endpoint.
- Test from a network outside the VPS provider’s internal network and check the provider’s public address and routing.
The server stops when you log out
The process is still attached to an interactive shell. Move it to systemd, a Windows service or another supervisor; use tmux only as an interim detachable session. Run the service under the dedicated server account and configure automatic restart and startup after reboot.
A recipe deployment fails
- Read the recipe’s stated database requirements and verify every connection detail.
- Check that the selected data directory is writable by the server account and has sufficient free space.
- Preserve an existing
txDatabackup before redeploying or deleting anything. - Review the txAdmin console and resource logs for the first failed step rather than only the final error.
- Retry from a known-good configuration or restore the backup if the failed deployment changed existing data.
The panel is reachable by strangers
Treat this as an access incident. Restrict TCP 40120 at the provider and host firewall, rotate txAdmin credentials and the backup password, review administrator accounts and logs, and replace any exposed registration or database secret. Do not rely on an obscure URL or an unadvertised port as the security boundary.
A repeatable deployment checklist
- Provision a supported Windows or Linux VPS with terminal or startup access.
- Create a dedicated non-root or non-administrator service account and prepare writable storage.
- Update the operating system and install extraction and process-management tools.
- Plan firewall rules for SSH or remote management, TCP 40120, and the game endpoint.
- Download the current recommended FXServer artifact and extract it to the server directory.
- Launch
./run.shon Linux orFXServer.exeon Windows without+exec server.cfgfor first boot. - Use the printed URL and PIN to link txAdmin to the owner’s Cfx.re account, set the backup password, choose a recipe, and select
txData. - Create a Cfx.re server key, enter it in the deployer, and run the recipe.
- Save and run the server, then verify the active profile and
sv_licenseKey. - Allow the required ports through both firewall layers, keeping txAdmin restricted.
- Move from an interactive shell to a supervised persistent service.
- Back up
txData, resources, configuration, and databases before production changes. - Test a remote player connection, a restart, a backup restore, and recovery after logout.
What success looks like
A correctly deployed VPS has four separate checks: FXServer starts from a supported host; txAdmin can be reached only through the intended management path; players can reach the configured game endpoint; and the process, data, and backups survive logout, restart, and a failed change. The VPS model is worthwhile when you want that control and are prepared to perform the administration. Managed hosting is the lower-maintenance alternative when the provider’s included artifacts, ports, backups, support, database options, and migration terms meet your requirements.
