What Is a Minecraft SMP and How to Start Your Own

A Minecraft SMP is a persistent survival multiplayer world where several people gather resources, build, explore, fight mobs and bosses, and decide whether to cooperate or compete. The world continues between play sessions, so the important decisions are which Minecraft edition everyone owns, where the world will run, who can join, and how it will be managed.

For a small private group, Realms is the simplest route because Minecraft manages the online server. Java self-hosting gives the organizer the most configuration control but requires software, networking, updates, backups, and security work. Bedrock Dedicated Server is the official downloadable server for Bedrock players who want to run the infrastructure themselves.

What “SMP” means in Minecraft

SMP stands for survival multiplayer. In an SMP, players share a persistent survival world rather than opening a temporary single-player save. Everyone mines, farms, crafts, travels, builds and survives in the same world, even when the original creator is not playing.

Persistent survival, not a special game mode

“SMP” describes the way a world is played and hosted, not a separate Minecraft edition or software package. An SMP can be almost vanilla, heavily modified, role-play focused, competitive, cooperative or organized around a story. The common elements are a shared world, survival progression and multiple players connecting to it.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What players usually do together

  • Set up a shared spawn area and personal bases.
  • Divide labor between mining, farming, building, trading and exploration.
  • Plan large projects such as roads, towns, railways or shared storage.
  • Explore dangerous structures and dimensions together.
  • Prepare for major boss encounters.
  • Create agreements about territory, resources, PvP and whether pranks are acceptable.

Minecraft’s official multiplayer guidance describes the appeal as planning huge builds, going on adventures and collaborating to defeat difficult bosses. The same world can support competition, but the server’s rules should make that choice explicit rather than leaving it to guesswork.

Choose Java or Bedrock before you set anything up

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are separate environments. This is the first decision because a player’s edition determines which hosted games they can join. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements say Java players can join Java-hosted games, while Bedrock players join Bedrock worlds, servers, Realms or LAN games. Your group should use matching game versions and the latest release supported by the server.

Edition Who can join Typical device reach Best fit Important limitation
Java Edition Java Edition players on a compatible Java server Computers running Java Edition Groups that want Java server administration and its configuration ecosystem A Bedrock player cannot join a Java-hosted game simply by using the same account or world name
Bedrock Edition Bedrock players joining Bedrock worlds, servers, Realms or LAN games Bedrock-supported devices, including the platform mix supported by the edition Groups whose members play across Bedrock-compatible platforms Every client and the server must remain on compatible Bedrock versions

Ask the group three questions

  1. Which edition does each player already own and use?
  2. Which devices must participate?
  3. Will everyone be able to update to the same current release?

If even one essential player uses the other edition, settle that issue before subscribing to a service or downloading server software. A hosting choice cannot remove the edition boundary described in Minecraft’s requirements.

Pick the hosting method

There are three practical ways to launch a private SMP. The right choice depends on whether you value convenience, operating-system control or a particular edition’s device ecosystem.

Method Convenience Control What you operate Ongoing responsibility
Realms Highest; Minecraft provides a managed online world Lower than self-hosting A Realm subscription and its in-game settings Invites, permissions, rules and keeping clients compatible
Java self-hosting Lowest of the three Highest; you control server files and the host operating system Java runtime, official server JAR, firewall and possibly router settings Uptime, updates, backups, access control and network security
Bedrock Dedicated Server More setup than Realms, less edition ambiguity for Bedrock players High for a Bedrock server Official Bedrock Dedicated Server software on Windows or Ubuntu Linux Host maintenance, updates, networking, backups and moderation

Realms: the low-maintenance option

Minecraft describes a Realm as “a subscription to your own personal Minecraft server, where you can easily and safely play online with friends in shared worlds across devices.” It is the practical choice when the organizer does not want to configure a home network or leave a computer running as a server.

Java self-hosting: maximum control

The official Java server software is free to download. You supply the computer, Java runtime, storage, internet connection and administration. This route is appropriate when you want direct access to configuration files, logs, operating-system controls or custom server tooling and are prepared to maintain them.

Bedrock Dedicated Server: official Bedrock infrastructure

The official Bedrock Dedicated Server package is also free to download. It is intended for Windows and Ubuntu Linux and gives a Bedrock group a dedicated process instead of a subscription-managed Realm.

Plan the SMP before inviting anyone

A few decisions made before launch prevent most disputes and rework.

  • Define the audience: close friends, a family group, a class, a creator community or an open public server.
  • Choose the world style: mostly cooperative, optional PvP, factions, role-play, building-focused or a mixture.
  • Set access rules: invitation only, application-based or open access.
  • Write a short rules document: cover griefing, theft, PvP, harassment, exploits, builds near spawn and acceptable pranks.
  • Decide moderation authority: identify who can warn, mute, remove or ban a player and how appeals work.
  • Choose a backup policy: specify how often the world is copied, where copies are stored and who can restore one.
  • Agree on resets: explain whether the world can be reset, when that decision is made and how players are notified.
  • Choose an update policy: do not update the server until the organizer has confirmed that clients and any extensions remain compatible.

Keep the first ruleset short enough that every player will read it. A one-page agreement is more useful than a long document that nobody understands.

How to start an SMP with Realms

Realms removes most infrastructure work, but it does not remove the need to choose the correct edition or manage the community.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the edition. Use the Realms option for the edition every participant plays. Java and Bedrock Realms are not interchangeable.
  2. Open the Realms creation flow. From the Minecraft main menu, open the play or worlds screen, choose the Realms option and start a new Realm. Menu wording can vary by edition and release.
  3. Select or create the world. Start with a new survival world or use the edition’s supported method for moving an existing world into the Realm. Decide the difficulty and basic world settings before the first public session.
  4. Invite players deliberately. Add the usernames or gamertags of the people who should have access. Verify each identity before sending an invitation, especially when similar names exist.
  5. Set permissions and expectations. Give elevated privileges only to people who need them. Publish the rules, explain PvP and building boundaries, and identify the person handling disputes.
  6. Test together. Have at least one invited player join, break and place blocks, travel away from spawn and reconnect. This confirms that the edition, account permissions and world access are correct.
  7. Schedule maintenance. Announce planned updates, rule changes and any world reset before they affect players. Keep client versions aligned with the Realm’s supported release.

Realms is best when the group wants to play rather than administer a server. Its trade-off is that the organizer accepts a managed environment instead of controlling the underlying operating system and server files.

How to self-host a Java SMP

Java self-hosting is a small server-administration project. Minecraft’s official guidance warns that configuring a home network is not recommended unless the operator understands what they are doing. Work through the setup on a test world before inviting a large group.

1. Prepare a dedicated host

Use a computer that can remain available during play sessions and has sufficient memory, storage and a stable broadband connection. A dedicated machine is easier to maintain than a personal computer that is regularly shut down or used by someone else.

  • Install the Java runtime version required by the server release you intend to run.
  • Create a dedicated folder for the server rather than placing files among personal documents.
  • Use an operating-system account and file permissions that prevent ordinary players from editing the server files.
  • Decide where you will store backups before the world contains anything valuable.

2. Download the official server JAR

Download the Java server JAR from Minecraft’s official server-download page. Keep the file name and version visible so you can match it to the clients. Do not mix files from different releases in the same live folder without a planned upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Run it once to generate files

Open a terminal or command prompt in the server folder and start the JAR with a command such as:

java -jar server.jar nogui

Replace server.jar with the actual file name. The first launch normally creates configuration files and stops because the End User License Agreement has not yet been accepted.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

4. Accept the EULA and launch again

Open the generated eula.txt, read the agreement and change the acceptance entry to eula=true only if you agree to it. Save the file and run the same start command again. The server should then create the world and finish starting.

5. Configure the world and access

Stop the server cleanly before editing settings. Review server.properties and set the world name, difficulty, game mode, message of the day and access controls appropriate for your group. Enable a whitelist for a private SMP, then add players through the server console or the supported administrative commands. Restart after configuration changes when the server requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test locally before exposing it

Connect from the host computer first. Confirm that the world loads, blocks can be changed, the console records joins and the server shuts down cleanly. A local test separates Minecraft configuration problems from router or firewall problems.

7. Configure the firewall and router only when needed

Players outside your home network generally need an operating-system firewall rule and router port-forwarding rule that direct traffic to the server computer. The exact screens differ by router and operating system. Give access only to the server port, avoid exposing administration services, and protect the public address. If you cannot explain what a firewall or forwarding rule does, use Realms or a managed service instead of guessing.

8. Keep the process and files maintainable

  • Record the exact server version and Java runtime version.
  • Keep the launch command in a script so it can be repeated consistently.
  • Read the console for errors rather than closing the window when a player reports a problem.
  • Stop the server through its console command before copying or replacing world files.
  • Restrict access to operator-level commands.

How to start a Bedrock Dedicated Server

Minecraft’s official Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements list 4 GB of RAM, 180 MB to 1 GB of available storage and a broadband internet connection. The Linux build requires Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later; Windows has its own specified minimum versions on the official requirements page. Treat those figures as published minimum requirements, not a guarantee of a particular player count or performance level.

1. Verify the platform and edition

Use a supported Windows installation or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS-or-later system. Confirm that every intended player uses Bedrock Edition and that the server package matches the client release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Download and extract the official package

Download the Bedrock Dedicated Server package from Minecraft, extract it into a dedicated server folder and preserve the included files. Keep the folder separate from personal worlds and unrelated applications.

3. Start the included server executable

Launch the executable supplied for your operating system. The first run creates or fills the server configuration files. Read the console output for the bind address, startup status and any missing dependency instead of assuming that a silent window means the server is ready.

4. Configure access and world settings

Use the package’s configuration files to set the world name, difficulty, game mode and access policy. For a private SMP, use an allowlist or the strongest supported invite control, and give operator permissions only to trusted administrators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Open network access carefully

Allow the server through the host firewall and configure the router only if players are connecting from outside the local network. Test from the same network first, then test with one remote player. Keep the server address private and change or remove forwarding rules if the SMP is shut down.

6. Establish update and backup routines

Before updating the package, stop the process, copy the world and configuration files, and record the previous version. Test the updated server with an administrator before announcing it to the group.

Networking, security and privacy essentials

Online play from home turns the host computer into an internet-facing service. The edition does not change the basic security responsibilities.

  • Use a separate operating-system account for the server where practical.
  • Apply operating-system and server updates from trusted official sources.
  • Allow only the necessary game traffic through the firewall.
  • Do not publish the home IP address in a public chat or social profile.
  • Use a whitelist or allowlist for a friends-only SMP.
  • Give operator privileges to the smallest possible group.
  • Keep an offline or otherwise separate backup in case the host is damaged or compromised.
  • Remove old forwarding rules and unused server processes.

Realms avoids most home-network exposure because Minecraft manages the service. Self-hosting is not automatically unsafe, but it requires the organizer to understand every rule that makes the server reachable.

Design rules that keep an SMP enjoyable

Property and building boundaries

Mark shared areas and private bases on a map or in a written notice. Decide how close players may build to spawn, whether abandoned structures can be reused and how disputes over resources are resolved.

PvP and theft

State whether PvP is always on, limited to agreed arenas or allowed only by consent. Define theft separately from scavenging: a player may be allowed to take items from a community chest but not from another player’s storage.

Griefing and exploits

Ban deliberate destruction, traps that target unwilling players and exploits that damage the world economy unless your group explicitly wants that style. Explain how administrators restore damage and whether repeat offenses lead to removal.

Moderation and appeals

Use a predictable process: private warning, documented evidence, temporary restriction and permanent removal for repeated or severe violations. Keep moderation decisions separate from personal arguments, and tell players how to appeal.

Backups, updates and routine maintenance

The world file is the SMP’s most valuable asset. A server that runs perfectly today can still lose progress after a hardware failure, mistaken command or corrupted save.

  1. Choose a schedule. Copy the world after major building sessions and on a regular calendar schedule.
  2. Stop cleanly. Use the server’s shutdown command before copying live world files.
  3. Keep multiple generations. Retain more than the newest copy so you can recover from corruption discovered days later.
  4. Store a separate copy. Keep at least one backup away from the live server computer.
  5. Test restoration. Periodically restore a copy into a separate test folder to confirm that the files are usable.
  6. Document versions. Label each backup with the date, edition and server version.

For updates, first verify that the server release and every player’s client are compatible. Announce downtime, back up the world, update the server, start it privately and inspect the console before reopening access.

Common SMP problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
A player cannot join at all Edition or version mismatch Confirm Java versus Bedrock, update clients and verify that the server is running the matching release
The server works locally but not remotely Firewall, router or address problem Test the host firewall, forwarding rule, server bind setting and the address given to the player
The Java server stops immediately on first launch The EULA file has not been accepted Read eula.txt, set eula=true only if you agree, save it and relaunch
Players can join but the wrong people have access Whitelist, allowlist or permission settings are incomplete Review invited names, remove unknown entries and limit operator privileges
The world appears to have lost progress Crash, bad update or restored old copy Stop the server, preserve the current files, identify the newest verified backup and test restoration separately
Players report lag or disconnects Host, network or world workload is overloaded Read server logs, check host resources and network stability, reduce unnecessary processes and avoid changing several settings at once
Players argue about damage or stolen items Rules were unclear or enforcement is inconsistent Apply the written policy, document the decision and clarify the rule before the next session

Which SMP setup should you choose?

Choose Realms when convenience is the priority

Use Realms when the group is small and private, participants want to connect without anyone maintaining a home server, and the organizer accepts a managed service. It is the shortest path from an idea to a shared survival world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Java self-hosting when administration is part of the goal

Use a Java server you operate when you need direct file and operating-system control, are comfortable with Java and networking, and can take responsibility for uptime, security, updates and backups. The software download itself is free, but the host computer, electricity, bandwidth and administrator time are not.

Choose Bedrock Dedicated Server for a self-managed Bedrock group

Use Bedrock Dedicated Server when the players are on Bedrock, the supported device ecosystem matters and you want dedicated infrastructure without a Realm subscription. Confirm the published hardware and operating-system requirements before installing it.

Use a simple decision test

  1. If nobody wants to administer a server, choose Realms.
  2. If everyone is on Java and the organizer wants maximum control, choose Java self-hosting.
  3. If everyone is on Bedrock and the organizer can maintain Windows or Ubuntu Linux, consider Bedrock Dedicated Server.
  4. If the group cannot agree on an edition, stop and resolve that disagreement before launching.

A practical launch day checklist

  • Edition confirmed for every player.
  • Server method selected and host requirements checked.
  • World created and tested by at least two players.
  • Rules for PvP, theft, griefing, moderation and resets published.
  • Whitelist or allowlist configured for a private group.
  • Operator permissions restricted.
  • First backup completed and restoration location documented.
  • Server and clients on compatible versions.
  • Remote connection tested without exposing unnecessary services.
  • Downtime and update communication channel chosen.

Once those checks pass, the SMP is ready for its first real session. The world’s long-term success will depend less on a perfect initial seed than on clear expectations, reliable backups and an organizer who keeps the edition, server and clients aligned.
