To host Cursed Walking – Lite Edition, first choose the exact Minecraft and Forge release, then download that release’s matching server-pack files from the creator’s official CurseForge project. Cursed Walking – Lite Edition is an approved adaptation of OnMod’s Cursed Walking modpack. OnMod describes it as “A lightweight, barebones zombie modpack that prioritizes performance.” The Lite Edition is intended to reduce the overhead of a larger zombie-themed pack, but it is still a Forge modpack: every player and the server must use compatible versions of Minecraft, Forge, and the pack itself.

The parent project had 8.6 million total downloads in 2026, and its listed last update was August 23, 2026. Those figures and release details can change, so use the project’s current Files tab when deciding which build to install.
Decide the release before installing anything
Version matching is the most important part of a working server. Do not download a client profile for one release and a server pack for another. Write down the exact combination your group will use:

Have every player install the same client release before testing connections. A server can start successfully while still rejecting players whose mod list or versions differ.
What you need before self-hosting
- An always-available computer: The machine must stay powered on and connected whenever people want to play. A desktop or a dedicated home server is usually more practical than a laptop that sleeps or changes networks.
- Storage for the server and world: Leave free space beyond the initial files so the world, logs, configuration, and backups can grow.
- Memory and processor headroom: CreeperHost publishes 5,000 MB of RAM, two 4.5 GHz CPU units, and 15 GB of SSD storage as minimums for its Lite Edition listing. Treat those numbers as a provider-specific baseline, not a universal hardware guarantee.
- A supported Java and launch environment: Use the Java/runtime version and launch method specified in the server pack’s included instructions. Forge packs can fail when started with an incompatible runtime.
- Network administration access: You need permission to configure the computer’s firewall and, for players outside your home network, the router or gateway that receives incoming traffic.
- A backup location: Keep world backups on a different disk or machine when possible. A backup stored only beside the live world will not help if that disk fails.
Self-hosting: step-by-step
1. Download the matching server pack
Open the official Cursed Walking project on CurseForge, select the Files tab, and identify the release that matches the Minecraft and Forge versions chosen by your group. Download its server-pack archive. Do not substitute a client archive, an older server pack, or a pack from an unofficial mirror.

Create a new folder used only by this server. A dedicated directory keeps the world, mods, configuration, logs, and launch files together and makes backups and later updates easier. Give the account that runs the server read and write access to the folder, but avoid running unrelated software from the same directory.
3. Unpack the supplied files without changing their structure
Extract the server-pack archive into the new directory. Preserve the folders and filenames supplied by the pack. Do not drag individual mods into a different installation or merge the files with another modpack; that can leave an apparently complete directory with missing libraries or incompatible configuration.
4. Follow the pack’s launch instructions for the first start
Use the launch script or command included with that server pack and follow any first-run prompts it documents. The exact command can vary by release and operating system, so there is no single safe command to copy across all four Minecraft versions. Watch the console for a clean startup and allow the server to create its initial world and configuration files before inviting players.

5. Allocate memory deliberately
Set the memory value in the supplied launcher or launch configuration rather than guessing at a command-line flag. The published 5,000 MB figure is a minimum listed by one hosting provider. It does not mean every group needs exactly 5 GB, nor does it define a maximum player count. Keep additional headroom for simultaneous players, new terrain generation, higher view distance, and any extra mods you add. If the operating system, desktop, or other services share the machine, do not assign all physical RAM to Minecraft.
6. Configure local and internet access
Allow the server process through the host computer’s firewall. If players are outside your home network, configure the router to forward the server’s configured port to the host machine and verify that the forwarding rule points to the correct local address. The sources do not publish a Lite Edition-specific default port, so read the generated server configuration after the first launch instead of assuming a number.
Give players only the address and port they need. If you want a private group, restrict access with your server’s available access controls and your firewall rather than publishing the address broadly.
7. Test with the real player group
- Start the server and confirm that it reaches a ready state without repeated errors.
- Join locally from the host network, if possible, to distinguish a server problem from an internet-routing problem.
- Have at least one player outside the host network connect using the intended address and port.
- Confirm that every player has the same Minecraft version, Forge version, and Lite Edition pack files.
- Enter the world, move around, place and break blocks, and then stop the server cleanly so you can verify that the world saves.
8. Schedule backups before making changes
Back up the world and relevant configuration before updating Forge, changing mods, or editing server settings. Keep multiple dated copies so a newly corrupted backup does not overwrite the last good one. A backup plan should cover the world directory as well as the configuration that determines how the pack runs.
9. Treat updates as a coordinated change
Stop the server, make a backup, and stage the new server-pack files in a separate directory or clearly labeled update area. Read the release notes and update the clients for the entire group. Start the updated server without deleting the old world, inspect the console, and test a copy of the world before committing to the new release. Never replace files while the server is writing to them.

Using managed hosting instead
A managed Minecraft host supplies a control panel and a prepared operational environment. It generally costs more than using a computer you already own, but it shifts installation, availability, backups, diagnostics, and some networking work to the provider. You still need to select a compatible pack version and ensure that every client matches the server.

How much RAM and CPU does the Lite Edition server need?
The only concrete resource baseline in the supplied provider material is 5,000 MB RAM, two 4.5 GHz CPU units, and 15 GB SSD. Use it as a starting point when comparing plans or sizing a self-hosted machine, not as a promise that every world or player count will perform identically.
Resource demand rises when several players explore different directions, because the server must generate and save new terrain. A larger view distance, frequent entity activity, additional mods, large farms, and repeated simultaneous logins also increase CPU, memory, storage, or network pressure. A small private group in an established world may need less headroom than a busy public server, while a new world-generation session can be demanding even with few players.
- If the process is terminated for lack of memory or logs show allocation failures, reduce competing workloads and increase the server allocation only when the machine has spare physical RAM.
- If tick speed falls during exploration, investigate CPU load, view distance, and world-generation activity before simply adding memory.
- If players experience rubber-banding while the host looks idle, check upload bandwidth, router quality, and the distance between players and the host location.
- Leave storage margin for world growth, logs, configuration snapshots, and the number of backups you intend to retain.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server exits immediately
Recheck the Minecraft release, Forge version, and server-pack archive. Confirm that the files were extracted completely and that you used the launch instructions supplied for that release. Read the first error in the console rather than focusing on the final shutdown message; a missing library, incompatible runtime, or damaged archive can all produce a generic-looking exit.

Compare that player’s Minecraft, Forge, and Lite Edition versions with the server. If the versions match, test the address from the same network as the server and then from an outside network. A local connection that works while an outside connection fails points toward firewall, router forwarding, address, or port configuration rather than the modpack itself.
Only some players are rejected
Ask the rejected player to reinstall or reselect the exact client profile used by the group. Do not copy random mods from another installation. A single extra, missing, or different-version mod can prevent a client from completing the handshake.
Lag appears when exploring
Watch the console and operating-system resource use while someone generates new terrain. Lower the server’s configured view distance if the pack and host setup permit it, reduce competing workloads, and make sure the world is stored on fast, healthy storage. If the issue is network delay rather than slow ticks, review upload capacity and the host’s geographic distance from players.
An update breaks the world or configuration
Stop using the changed installation, restore the pre-update backup, and reproduce the update in a separate copy. Keep the previous server-pack directory intact until the new version has passed a real-player test. If no usable backup exists, avoid repeatedly starting and stopping the damaged world, because further writes can make recovery harder.
Licensing and redistribution
OnMod’s official project page states, “This modpack’s license is All Rights Reserved.” It also says, “Distributing it and reuploading it on Curseforge or another platform, even after modifications, is strictly not allowed.” Download the pack from the creator’s official CurseForge project. Do not publish a mirror, bundle the files into another downloadable pack, or redistribute a modified copy without asking OnMod for permission first.
Running a server for your own group is different from repackaging and publishing the modpack, but the project’s distribution notice is the controlling guidance for copies and uploads. When in doubt about a proposed redistribution, obtain permission before making it public.
Which hosting route should you choose?
Choose self-hosting when
- You already have a machine that can remain online and you are comfortable managing its operating system and network.
- You want full access to server files, launch settings, backups, and maintenance schedules.
- You can test router access and provide your own support when the server or a player’s client fails.
Choose managed hosting when
- You do not want to leave a home computer running or expose your home network to incoming connections.
- You value a control panel, one-click pack installation, provider diagnostics, and support.
- You prefer a recurring charge over maintaining hardware, electricity, backups, and networking yourself.
A reliable operating routine
For either route, use the same discipline: record the exact release, keep every client on that release, back up before changes, test access with the real group, and retain the previous working installation until an update has proved stable. That routine prevents the most common Lite Edition failures—version mismatch, incomplete server files, unreachable ports, and unrecoverable world changes—without relying on an assumed default port or an unverified resource promise.
