How to Hide Your Email Address Without Losing Important Messages

A persistent forwarding alias gives websites a separate address without sacrificing future messages. Compare how the major options work and what to verify before signing up.

Use a persistent email alias that forwards to your main inbox when a website does not need your real address. The site gets a different address to contact, and you can often disable or delete that alias if it becomes noisy. For accounts you may need to recover or use for years, a managed forwarding alias is usually more practical than a temporary inbox that disappears.

What a throwaway email service does—and what it does not do

An email alias is a separate address that forwards messages to your regular inbox. When you sign up with one, the website receives the alias rather than your primary address. If that address starts receiving unwanted mail, you may be able to turn off forwarding or remove it without changing the address you use elsewhere. Mozilla explains how Firefox Relay masks work; Proton describes its hide-my-email aliases; and Apple explains Hide My Email with Sign in with Apple.

This is different from using a disposable inbox that expires. A short-lived mailbox may be unsuitable for an account that later sends a password reset, receipt, security alert, or other message you need. Choose an address you can continue to manage whenever future correspondence matters.

Masking keeps a website from being given your primary email address as its contact address. It does not, by itself, guarantee anonymity, block every phishing attempt or tracking method, or protect an account from a weak or reused password.

Choose a service that fits how you sign up

The practical differences are where you create aliases, how many your plan permits, whether you can reply from them, and what control you have over each address. Limits and plan names can change; check the provider’s current support page before relying on a particular allowance.

Service Where alias creation fits Limits stated in the cited support material Replies and control Message handling stated by provider
Firefox Relay Mozilla’s mask service; its password-manager integration can generate or reuse masks. Mozilla’s overview states five free masks and unlimited masks for Premium. Verify current limits with Mozilla Support. Mozilla documents managing masks and disabling forwarding. Confirm reply behavior for your intended use in the current service documentation. The cited materials explain forwarding and privacy/security controls; they do not establish a comparable retention period here.
Proton Pass / SimpleLogin Aliases integrate with Proton Pass and Proton Mail workflows. Proton’s support page states up to 10 aliases on Proton Free and Mail Plus, and unlimited aliases on Pass Plus or Proton Unlimited. Check current plan details. Proton says replies can be sent from an alias. Review the service’s current controls and sender restrictions before using one for important correspondence. Proton’s Pass privacy policy says hide-my-email aliases relay email and do not store emails; it also says some functionality is hosted on European cloud servers through its wholly owned subsidiary SimpleLogin SAS.
Apple Hide My Email Available in supported Sign in with Apple flows and iCloud+ workflows, including supported Safari use. The cited Apple materials do not state a comparable numeric alias allowance. Sign in with Apple creates a unique random address for the app or website. Apple says only designated addresses for that app or site are automatically forwarded for that flow. See Apple’s guide. Apple Support says: “All email messages are deleted from our relay servers after they’re delivered, usually within seconds.” This statement applies to Apple’s Hide My Email relay service.

Check these details before using an alias for an important account

  • Future access: Make sure you can keep the alias active for password resets, account notices, and receipts.
  • Replies: If you need to respond to messages, confirm whether replies can be sent from the alias and whether incoming senders are restricted.
  • Individual controls: Find out how to disable forwarding or delete one alias without disrupting others.
  • Message handling: Read the provider’s statements about relaying, storage, and retention. Do not assume one provider’s handling applies to another.
  • Account security: Use a unique password and available account protections. Hiding your address does not secure the account by itself.

Use aliases with a recovery plan

For a newsletter or one-off signup, an alias gives you a distinct address to hand over and a way to cut off that address if it becomes unwanted. For banking, work, health, or other consequential accounts, first consider whether you can maintain the alias and reach it if you change devices, lose access to the alias provider, or need account recovery. Keep your alias-provider account secure and its recovery details current.
