To make OneDrive disappear from File Explorer, first decide whether you want to stop syncing, hide its folder entry, or uninstall the app. To disconnect syncing, select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, then go to Help & Settings > Settings > Account > Unlink this PC and confirm Unlink account. Unlinking does not delete cloud files. Microsoft’s hide instructions vary by Windows version, so hiding the folder is not guaranteed to work the same way on every PC.
Choose the right way to remove OneDrive
These actions have different results. Unlinking stops this PC from syncing with your account; hiding changes the folder’s visibility in File Explorer; uninstalling removes the desktop app. None of those actions is the same as deleting files from OneDrive online.

How do I stop OneDrive from syncing?
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area. If it is not visible, check the hidden-icons arrow.
- Open Help & Settings > Settings, then select the Account tab.
- Select Unlink this PC, then confirm Unlink account.
This disconnects the PC’s sync relationship. It does not remove files stored online. Files that were downloaded and available on the PC stay in the local OneDrive folder. An online-only file name may have appeared in File Explorer, but the file itself is not stored locally; open OneDrive on the web to access it after unlinking. Microsoft explains the difference between local and online-only files.

How can I hide OneDrive in File Explorer without uninstalling it?
Microsoft documents a version-dependent method: unlink the PC, mark the OneDrive folder as hidden, and quit OneDrive. The hidden attribute may affect whether the folder appears as expected on your Windows build, so this is not a universal Explorer setting.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Unlink the PC using the steps above.
- In File Explorer, right-click the OneDrive folder and select Properties.
- On the General tab, check Hidden and select Apply.
- Open the OneDrive menu from its notification-area icon and choose the option to quit OneDrive.
If the folder remains visible, your Windows version may not support this hide method. Microsoft notes that OneDrive is built into some Windows versions and may not be uninstallable. See Microsoft’s version-specific guidance.
How do I uninstall the OneDrive app?
- Open Settings > Apps in Windows. Depending on the Windows version, the relevant area may be labeled Apps & features or Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive.
- Select it and choose Uninstall, then confirm if prompted.
Uninstalling stops the desktop app from syncing, but it does not delete your OneDrive folder or remove cloud files. On some Windows versions the app is built in and the uninstall option may not be available. Microsoft also states that Windows 8.1’s built-in OneDrive app cannot be uninstalled. Will unlinking or uninstalling delete my files?
No. Unlinking disconnects the PC; uninstalling removes the desktop app. Neither is an instruction to erase your cloud content. Files already available on the device remain in the local OneDrive folder after unlinking, while online-only files require an internet connection and access through OneDrive on the web. Do not delete the OneDrive folder or its contents just to remove the Explorer entry.

What if I only want to save space or stop syncing for a while?
Save space with Files On-Demand or selective sync
Uninstalling is usually unnecessary if your goal is to reduce local storage use. Files On-Demand lets online-only files appear in the OneDrive folder without downloading their contents, and selective folder sync lets you limit which folders are synced to the PC. Microsoft’s OneDrive file guidance covers these options.
Pause or quit OneDrive temporarily
For a temporary interruption, use the OneDrive notification-area menu to pause syncing or quit the app instead of unlinking or uninstalling it. Microsoft documents these as ways to stop sync without deleting files. See Microsoft’s pause and stop-sync instructions.

Can I restore files if I deleted them by mistake?
Check the OneDrive recycle bin first. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Restore your OneDrive to roll back activity within the previous 30 days. That feature cannot restore files permanently deleted from the recycle bin. Microsoft’s restore instructions explain the available recovery options.
Which Windows versions are covered?
The core unlink, hide, and uninstall guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the available controls differ by version. Microsoft says support for the OneDrive desktop app ended for Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier on August 15, 2026; support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 ended on January 1, 2022. These are support boundaries, not claims that the app immediately stops working on those systems. Microsoft’s earlier-Windows page lists the affected versions.
