How to Hide Cookie Banners in Automated Website Screenshots

Hide a known cookie banner in a Playwright screenshot with capture-only CSS, verify the selector, and understand when page-level styles or masking make sense.

For a Playwright screenshot, hide a known cookie banner with screenshot-only CSS using the style option. This removes the banner from the captured output without recording a consent choice or changing the site’s consent state. Inspect the target site to find its actual banner selector; there is no universal cookie-banner selector.

Hide a banner only in the screenshot

Playwright’s page.screenshot() accepts a style option that applies CSS while the screenshot is taken. This is the simplest approach when you want to keep the banner out of the image but leave the page’s normal behavior alone.

const screenshot = await page.screenshot({
  path: 'page.png',
  style: `
    /* Replace this with a selector found on the target site. */
    .cookie-banner { display: none !important; }
  `,
});

The selector above is an example, not a standard used by every consent platform. Inspect the page’s HTML or use browser developer tools to identify the element, then check the resulting screenshot to confirm the rule matched the intended banner. Playwright describes screenshot styles as a way to hide dynamic elements or change properties for repeatable screenshots: Page | Playwright.

Hide versus mask

The screenshot option mask covers a matched element’s bounding box with a colored overlay. It is useful when you need to exclude pixels, such as in a visual comparison, but it does not reveal the content underneath the banner. Use CSS with display: none when the goal is to capture the underlying page rather than a solid block.

Choose the right injection method

Goal Playwright approach What it does
Hide a known banner only in the image page.screenshot({ style }) Applies CSS for the screenshot operation; start here for capture-only changes.
Add styling during page setup page.addStyleTag() Inserts a style tag containing CSS, or links a stylesheet, into the page or frame.
Run setup before page scripts, including on navigation page.addInitScript() Runs after a document is created and before its page scripts; it also runs on navigation and when child frames attach or navigate.
Cover the banner area with a solid block mask screenshot option Overlays the matched element’s bounding box instead of removing it to show the page underneath.

For selector-based screenshot assertions, Playwright’s documentation also describes screenshot styles that can pierce Shadow DOM and apply to inner frames. Check the API and version used by your project before relying on that behavior: PageAssertions | Playwright.

Use page-level or early setup when needed

Insert a style tag into the page

Use page.addStyleTag() when CSS should be part of the page setup rather than supplied only for one screenshot. It accepts CSS content or a stylesheet URL. For example:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

await page.addStyleTag({
  content: '.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }'
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

As with screenshot-only CSS, replace the sample selector with one verified on the target page.

Run initialization before page scripts

page.addInitScript() runs after a document is created and before its page scripts run, and runs again on navigation and when child frames attach or navigate. That timing is useful when setup must be in place early or survive navigation. Do not rely on an ordering between scripts installed with browserContext.addInitScript() and page.addInitScript(): Playwright documents their evaluation order as undefined.

Verify the result without changing consent

  1. Load the target page in the same browser context and state your capture workflow will use.
  2. Inspect the page and identify the specific element that renders the banner; account for the possibility that it is inside a frame or Shadow DOM.
  3. Apply a narrow CSS rule to that element using screenshot style or the page-level method appropriate to your workflow.
  4. Capture the image and inspect it. Confirm the banner is gone and that the selector did not also hide page content you need.
  5. Keep the screenshot result separate from any consent-management workflow. A visually hidden banner does not mean the site received, stored, or honored a consent choice.

Troubleshooting

  • The banner remains visible: The selector may not match the rendered element, or the banner may be in a frame or Shadow DOM. Inspect the actual page structure and confirm the CSS applies in the relevant context.
  • Page content disappears too: The selector is too broad. Narrow it to the banner element and capture again.
  • The screenshot has a colored rectangle where the banner was: That is masking behavior. Use a CSS rule with display: none if you want the page beneath to show.
  • The banner returns after navigation: A page-level style inserted once may not be present on the newly loaded document. Use screenshot style for capture-scoped CSS or use an initialization approach when setup must run across navigations.
  • Behavior differs across frames or versions: Verify which Playwright API and version the project uses, and test the screenshot on the target page. The documented behavior does not establish one selector or identical banner handling for every site.
