Fix Cropped Website Screenshots on Pages with Infinite Scroll

A full-page screenshot may not trigger infinite-scroll loading. Scroll in controlled steps, verify the content, then capture and inspect the page.

If a screenshot stops at the visible screen or misses sections farther down an infinite-scroll page, first enable full-page capture, then scroll the page in steps and wait for each needed batch of content to appear. A full-page option captures the page’s scrollable extent; it does not necessarily trigger the scrolling that some sites need before they load more content.

Why a full-page screenshot can still be incomplete

A viewport screenshot records only what is currently visible. A full-page screenshot instead requests the scrollable page as though it fit on one very tall screen. Playwright documents this behavior and supports it with fullPage: true in JavaScript and full_page=True in Python: Playwright screenshot documentation.

That capture mode is not the same as scrolling through the page. Some sites fetch or render additional content only after a user scrolls near a loading boundary. A Playwright issue report describes lazy or scroll-triggered content being missed when full-page capture does not move the visual viewport; it is a reported limitation, not proof that every browser or page behaves the same way: Playwright issue report.

So diagnose two separate questions: did the tool capture only the viewport, and had the site loaded all the content you wanted before capture?

Fix the screenshot by loading content before capture

  1. Choose full-page capture. If the result contains only the visible area, turn on the tool’s full-page or full-size option. For Playwright, use the examples below.
  2. Scroll in controlled increments. Move down the page several times rather than jumping straight to the bottom. Pause near each point where new content appears to load.
  3. Confirm each batch appeared. Look for the expected cards, rows, images, or section heading before scrolling again. The right wait condition depends on the site; a fixed delay cannot be relied on for every page.
  4. Capture the full page again. Once the portion you need is present, request the full-page screenshot.
  5. Inspect the output from top to bottom. Check the first and last content, the transitions between loaded batches, and whether overlays or fixed elements obscure anything.

This workflow is practical guidance based on the difference between full-page capture and scroll-triggered loading; the exact trigger and reliable readiness signal are specific to the site.

Automate it with Playwright

Playwright’s documented full-page option is useful once the target content is present. The following JavaScript example scrolls the main page in steps, waits for a site-specific visible signal after each step, and then saves a full-page screenshot. Replace the example URL, selector, and expected text with details from the page you are capturing.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  await page.goto('https://example.com/feed', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });

  // Adapt these to the page. This example expects a new item to appear
  // after each scroll step; choose a signal that identifies the content you need.
  const itemSelector = '.feed-item';
  let previousCount = await page.locator(itemSelector).count();
  const maxSteps = 12;

  for (let step = 0; step < maxSteps; step++) {
    await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollBy(0, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8)));

    try {
      await page.waitForFunction(
        ({ selector, previous }) => document.querySelectorAll(selector).length > previous,
        { selector: itemSelector, previous: previousCount },
        { timeout: 5000 }
      );
    } catch {
      // No additional matching item appeared within the chosen wait window.
      // Stop rather than assuming a longer generic delay will help.
      break;
    }

    previousCount = await page.locator(itemSelector).count();
  }

  await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  await browser.close();
})();

The loop is a starting pattern, not a universal infinite-scroll detector. Some pages update an existing element, use a “Load more” button, or signal readiness with a heading or network-backed state rather than adding matching items. Choose an assertion or observable change that means the particular content you need is ready.

Playwright discourages using networkidle as a generic readiness condition for tests and recommends assessing readiness with web assertions. A page can remain active because of analytics or polling, or appear network-quiet before the content you need is rendered. Use a meaningful, page-specific condition instead: Playwright Page API.

Python: full-page capture after loading content

For Python, the documented capture form is full_page=True. As with JavaScript, scroll and wait for a site-specific signal before the final screenshot. This example uses a count change as that signal; adapt the selector and stopping condition for the target.

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright, TimeoutError as PlaywrightTimeoutError

with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch()
    page = browser.new_page()
    page.goto("https://example.com/feed", wait_until="domcontentloaded")

    item_selector = ".feed-item"
    previous_count = page.locator(item_selector).count()

    for _ in range(12):
        page.evaluate("window.scrollBy(0, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8))")
        try:
            page.wait_for_function(
                "({ selector, previous }) => document.querySelectorAll(selector).length > previous",
                {"selector": item_selector, "previous": previous_count},
                timeout=5000,
            )
        except PlaywrightTimeoutError:
            break
        previous_count = page.locator(item_selector).count()

    page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png", full_page=True)
    browser.close()

When only an inner panel scrolls

Some pages keep the outer document fixed while a feed, results pane, or other inner container scrolls. In that case, scrolling the window will not necessarily trigger the panel’s loading behavior. Identify the element that actually scrolls, move that element in steps, and confirm the needed content appears before capturing.

Playwright supports screenshots of individual elements as well as full-page screenshots, but there is no single documented procedure here that covers every nested-scroll or virtualized interface. If the site replaces off-screen items as you move, one full-page image may not preserve every item. Consider capturing separate sections or using the site’s own export if available.

Choose a workflow and verify its limits

Workflow Best fit What it does not guarantee
Browser or manual full-page capture A static page, or a page whose required content has already loaded; low setup That scrolling triggered every lazy-loaded section. The exact current Chrome DevTools command sequence was not verified in the cited material.
Playwright automation Repeatable captures where you can define page-specific scroll and readiness checks That fullPage alone will trigger site loading logic, or that one wait condition works across sites.

Whichever method you use, verify that the captured image includes the first and last sections you intended, that no batch boundary is missing, and that fixed overlays have not hidden content. Do not assume a tall image proves every item in a virtualized feed was rendered into it.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • The image is only as tall as the screen: the capture is likely in viewport mode. Select full-page capture; in Playwright, set fullPage: true or full_page=True.
  • The image is tall but missing lower sections: scroll through the page in increments, wait for the expected content at each boundary, then capture again.
  • Your scroll loop never detects new content: the page may use a different selector, replace items rather than adding them, or require a button or another interaction. Change the readiness signal to match the actual page behavior.
  • The page seems ready but the screenshot is still incomplete: replace a generic quiet-network wait with an assertion tied to the section or item you need. Playwright specifically discourages treating networkidle as a universal readiness signal.
  • The document does not move: check whether an inner panel owns the scrolling, and target that panel rather than the window.
  • Some items disappear as you scroll: the site may virtualize its list. Capture separate portions or use the site’s export if available; the reviewed documentation does not establish a universal fix for every virtualized interface.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. That can reduce nuisance elements in a capture, but it does not remove the need to verify that an infinite-scroll page loaded the content you want.

For this API call, supply the URL to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API options, including full-page capture and waits.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/feed -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Its Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
