Before capturing, scroll the page through the sections you need, let the relevant images or elements load, and then take the full-page screenshot. The right wait condition depends on the site; a fixed delay or network-idle wait alone is not a universal fix.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss content
Screenshot extent and page readiness are separate things. In Playwright, fullPage: true means the screenshot covers the full scrollable page rather than only the current viewport. It does not assert that every image or other element has loaded, or that the page has run every scroll-triggered action. See the Playwright Page API reference.

Some pages load content only when it approaches or enters the visible viewport. This may be implemented with browser lazy loading or an IntersectionObserver. Google Search Central describes these viewport-dependent patterns in its lazy-loading guidance. That guidance is about search crawling, but the viewport-trigger principle helps explain why a screenshot taken without scrolling may omit content.
Fix it by scrolling before capture
- Navigate to the page and wait for its initial state to settle.
- Scroll the relevant scrolling area downward in roughly viewport-sized increments so the page can react to each viewport.
- Wait for the specific images, elements, or application state you need. If the page has nested scrolling regions, scroll those too.
- Stop at a defined end condition, return to the intended capture position if the page’s layout requires it, and take the full-page screenshot.
The scroll pass is a practical response to viewport-triggered loading; it is not a guarantee that every site behaves the same way. Playwright’s screenshot API supports full-page capture, while an open discussion in Playwright issue #40941 concerns the distinction between full-page capture and visibly scrolling to trigger lazy content. The issue is closed as a duplicate and describes a proposal, not a released screenshot option.

Runnable Playwright example
This Node.js example scrolls the page in bounded increments, waits for image elements encountered so far to finish loading, and then captures the full page. Replace the URL and, where possible, add a site-specific locator or completion condition for the content your test actually needs.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Scroll through the document. The pass is bounded so it cannot run forever
// on an infinite feed.
let previousHeight = 0;
for (let step = 0; step < 40; step++) {
const height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
if (height === previousHeight && step > 0) break;
previousHeight = height;
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollBy(0, window.innerHeight));
await page.waitForTimeout(100);
}
// Wait for images currently represented in the document to finish loading.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const images = Array.from(document.images);
await Promise.all(images.map(img => {
if (img.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise(resolve => {
img.addEventListener('load', resolve, { once: true });
img.addEventListener('error', resolve, { once: true });
});
}));
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The short per-step pause above gives the page a chance to react to scrolling; it is not a universal readiness guarantee. For a known target, prefer an explicit condition such as await page.locator('.article-image').last().waitFor({ state: 'visible' }), or check a site-specific loading indicator or completion signal. Adjust the scroll loop’s stopping logic to suit the page, especially if new sections expand document height as they load.

Nested, virtualized, and infinite content
- Nested scroll area: The window scroll does not move an independently scrollable panel. Scroll that container directly and wait for its target content.
- Virtualized lists: Some pages render only the rows near the viewport and remove earlier rows as you move. Decide whether the screenshot should represent a particular viewport state or whether the application offers a way to render all rows; a full-page screenshot may not include items that were never present together in the document.
- Infinite feeds: Do not scroll until the page stops changing without a limit. Set a maximum number of steps, item count, or other application-specific stopping condition.
- Layout shifts: Images and expanding sections can change page height while scrolling. Recheck height and target state rather than assuming one pass or one measurement is sufficient.
Choose a meaningful wait condition
Wait for the content that matters to the capture, not merely for a generic signal. A visible target, completed image, disappeared loading indicator, or app-specific ready state is more directly tied to the desired result than elapsed time alone.
Network idle can be useful for initial readiness, but it does not prove that later scroll-triggered work has finished. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; that example is not a guarantee for every application. Similarly, a fixed sleep can be too short on a slow page and waste time on a fast one. No single timing value is established for all sites.

Troubleshoot missing lazy-loaded content
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot has the full page dimensions, but lower images are blank or absent. | The capture covered the document without triggering the page’s viewport-based loading. | Scroll the page in increments before capture, then wait for the images or target content. |
| Waiting for network idle does not fix it. | The needed content only starts loading after a later scroll or another application action. | Trigger that action first and wait for a target-specific completion condition. |
| The main page moves, but content in a panel remains missing. | The panel has its own scroll container. | Scroll the panel itself and verify the desired element inside it. |
| The page keeps getting longer and the capture never reaches a stable bottom. | An infinite feed or newly appended content keeps extending the document. | Use a bounded loop and stop at a meaningful item count, target, or step limit. |
| Some earlier list items disappear as later ones load. | The page may virtualize content, keeping only nearby items rendered. | Identify the exact viewport or state to capture; do not assume full-page capture can preserve items the page has removed. |
| The page layout changes after the screenshot pass starts. | Images or other content are still loading and shifting the document. | Wait for relevant images or a stable application signal, then verify the final layout before capture. |
When browser automation is the right choice
Use Playwright or Puppeteer when you need to control actual viewport movement, wait for application-specific states, handle nested or virtualized content, or make capture behavior repeatable. Choose based on the control your page needs and validate the result on the target site; the cited documentation does not establish a compatibility or performance ranking between them.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For a simple capture, one GET request returns an image or PDF. Its default cleanup accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does fullPage: true scroll the page to trigger lazy loading?
It sets the screenshot extent to the full scrollable page; it does not by itself guarantee viewport-triggered content has loaded.
