If your iPhone 18 Pro is frozen or unresponsive, quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Release the button when the logo shows. This force restart does not erase your data; it is different from choosing Restore in recovery mode.
Force restart an unresponsive iPhone 18 Pro
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, then release it.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide recommends forcing a restart when an iPhone is not responding and cannot be turned off and back on normally: Apple’s force-restart instructions. If a power-off slider appears, keep holding the Side button; the Apple logo, not the slider, is the cue to release it.

What “hard reset” means here
In this context, “hard reset” means a button-based force restart: it reboots a frozen phone and is not a factory reset. It does not erase the iPhone’s data. Recovery mode is a separate, computer-assisted troubleshooting process; selecting Restore in that process erases the device and reinstalls iOS.
If the force restart does not work
Connect the iPhone to a computer with a USB cable. On a Mac, open Finder; on a PC, open the Apple Devices app. With the iPhone connected, use the same button sequence, but keep holding the Side button until the Connect to computer screen appears.

When the computer offers Update or Restore, try Update first. Restore erases the iPhone. Apple’s recovery instructions cover iPhone 8 and later, including the iPhone 18 Pro: Use recovery mode to restore your iPhone or iPad. If a button is stuck or does not work and you cannot enter recovery mode, Apple says the device may need service.
If the Apple logo progress bar is stuck
If the iPhone is showing an Apple logo and progress bar during a restore or migration, wait until the bar has not moved for at least one hour before connecting it to a computer and entering recovery mode. This guidance applies to a stalled restore or migration progress bar; it is not a general wait time for every frozen iPhone. Choose the right troubleshooting step
- The screen responds and you want to turn the phone off: use the normal shutdown controls.
- The phone is frozen or will not respond: use the force-restart button sequence above.
- The restart fails or the phone cannot start: connect it to a computer and try recovery mode, choosing Update before Restore.
- A physical button does not work or recovery cannot complete: contact Apple or an authorized service provider.
