Angular CLI MCP Server Setup for VS Code and GitHub Copilot CLI

VS Code and GitHub Copilot CLI use different MCP configuration files. Here are the correct Angular CLI server entries for each host, plus trust and safety notes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect the Angular CLI MCP server, configure it separately for each host: VS Code uses .vscode/mcp.json with a top-level servers key, while GitHub Copilot CLI uses a project-level .mcp.json or .github/mcp.json with mcpServers. Both can launch the Angular server with npx -y @angular/cli mcp.

What the Angular CLI MCP server does

The server makes Angular CLI tools and workspace context available to a compatible AI host. Angular documents tools for discovering projects, finding Angular documentation and best practices, operating a development server, and running configured targets. Its current tool list includes ai_tutor, devserver.start, devserver.stop, devserver.wait_for_build, get_best_practices, list_projects, onpush_zoneless_migration, run_target, and search_documentation. Tool availability may vary by Angular CLI release; consult Angular’s MCP documentation if your installed version behaves differently.

Documented workflows include searching official documentation for API syntax, applying version-aligned best-practice guidance, monitoring a development build, and running tests through configured targets.

Configure the server in VS Code

  1. Open the Angular workspace folder in VS Code.
  2. In the project root, create .vscode/mcp.json. Create the .vscode folder if it does not exist.
  3. Add this configuration and save the file:
    {
      "servers": {
        "angular-cli": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "@angular/cli", "mcp"]
        }
      }
    }
  4. Use VS Code’s MCP server controls to inspect and start the configured server, then make its tools available in chat. VS Code also supports adding servers from its gallery or configuring them manually; see the VS Code MCP server guide.

Angular also documents the launch command as npx @angular/cli mcp. In an interactive terminal, run ng mcp to display host configuration instructions. The JSON example above uses npx with -y so npm can confirm package use without an interactive prompt.

Configure the server in GitHub Copilot CLI

Copilot CLI has its own MCP configuration format. It does not directly read VS Code’s .vscode/mcp.json, because that file uses the top-level servers key. For a project-level configuration, use .mcp.json or .github/mcp.json with a top-level mcpServers object.

  1. Open the Angular repository in Copilot CLI and ensure its folder is trusted.
  2. Create a project-level .mcp.json in the repository root, or use the supported .github/mcp.json location.
  3. Add the local server entry:
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "angular-cli": {
          "type": "local",
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "@angular/cli", "mcp"]
        }
      }
    }
  4. Use Copilot CLI’s MCP controls, such as /mcp add or copilot mcp add, where appropriate for your workflow. Check the resulting entry and configuration format against GitHub’s Copilot CLI instructions and the CLI command reference.

Copilot CLI skips project-level server configurations in untrusted repositories. In prompt mode, project servers load automatically only when the current directory is already trusted. Organization or enterprise registry and allowlist policies can also control which servers are permitted.

Why the configuration files are different

Host Project configuration Top-level key Trust and policy
VS Code .vscode/mcp.json servers VS Code provides MCP server controls and warns that local servers can run code on your machine.
GitHub Copilot CLI .mcp.json or .github/mcp.json mcpServers Project configurations depend on repository folder trust and may be restricted by organizational or enterprise policy.

Do not assume that copying the VS Code file unchanged will work in Copilot CLI. To adapt it, change the outer key from servers to mcpServers and use Copilot CLI’s local server entry format, including "type": "local". The Angular command and arguments remain the same.

Choose safer or more limited tool access

Angular documents two optional flags that narrow the tools registered by the server. Add either flag after mcp in the argument list:

  • --read-only registers only tools that do not modify the project.
  • --local-only registers only tools that do not require an internet connection.

For example, the VS Code arguments for read-only mode are ["-y", "@angular/cli", "mcp", "--read-only"]. Apply the same argument change to the Copilot CLI entry if you want that restriction there.

Review and troubleshoot the setup

  • Server is not recognized in VS Code: Confirm the file is at .vscode/mcp.json, uses valid JSON, and places the server under servers.
  • Server is not recognized in Copilot CLI: Confirm you used a supported project file, .mcp.json or .github/mcp.json, with the mcpServers key. The VS Code-specific file is not read directly.
  • Project server does not load in Copilot CLI: Check whether the repository folder is trusted and whether organization or enterprise policy allows the server.
  • Expected Angular tools are unavailable: Tool availability can change between Angular CLI releases. Check the documentation for the CLI version in use and inspect the server’s available tools in the host.

Local MCP servers can execute arbitrary code on the machine. Review the server source and configuration before starting it, and avoid placing sensitive API keys directly in configuration files. VS Code documents input variables and environment files for sensitive values in its MCP server guidance.
